"The Nordenham finishing mill is situated in the town of Nordenham, Fede1•al Republic of Germany, on the banks of the Weser River opposite the town of Bremerhaven, with access by water to the North Sea.The unfinished fibre, shipped j?•om Deception Bay during the sub-Arctic summer shipping season, is unloaded from bulk ocean carriers, stored and then processed throughout the year until the following shipping season. This paper describes the unloading and storage facilities,the finishing mill and the finished-fibre storage arrangement. Details of environmental and dust control practices and West German environmental standards are discussed. A resumé of fibre markets is included."

"Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

Nearly 55 years have elapsed since the U. S. Geological Survey was organized. During this period the mineral industries have grown from infancy or early childhood to well developed maturity, and some mining industries appear to be declining. Decline in mining is even more conspicuous in certain districts, or even states, than in any mining industry as a whole, and discoveries or developments of important new districts have been very few in recent years. Our reserves of most metals and nonmetals are adequate for many years of normal production, subject to changes in rate of exploitation that may be caused by foreign competition and by changes in technology and market conditions; but the declining production of many districts and the scarcity of important new discoveries to compensate for them is cause for some apprehension. It is likely that future production will depend to a considerable extent on deep exploration and on the thorough examination of places in and adjoining existing districts where significant outcrops are lacking and only apparently insignificant geologic features offer encouraging clues—more so than on the discovery of entirely new districts. Even the possible discovery of new districts, which have escaped the intensive search by the nontechnical prospector, must be dependent on geologic information. There is therefore no need for argument as to the value of geology to the mining industry; and the need of continuing to advance the science. The U. S. Geological Survey's past contributions to mining geology, as expressed in its official reports and other publications, are recognized by Ransome in his historical review of mining geology in the Lindgren volume.' These contributions have helped to form the basis of modern mining geology, which has grown rapidly in the last 25 years. This growth has witnessed the organization and maintenance of geologic staffs by mining companies in several districts, and their detailed work, together with the fact that nearly all of the larger mining districts have

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. Rarely do opportunities arise allowing closure of a mine site to be planned as a key beneficial land use asset within a new urban growth area; particularly so well prior to cessation of mining.Pit lakes are common mine closure legacies for many open cut mines and may form in open cut mine voids extending below the water table upon closure. Mine closure guidelines increasingly require post-mining land uses of equivalent capacity to premining conditions and that minimise long-term post-mining liabilities and maximise benefits to stakeholders and the environment. However, risks presented by pit lakes are regularly neglected in closure planning or are not able to be addressed to allow beneficial end use of the lake or surrounding land.This paper describes strategic planning initiated by quarry owners ten years before mining ceases. In liaison with the planning agencies, the planned closure of a large 100-year-old limestone quarry pit will form a lake on mine completion, with a well-considered beneficial end use in an urban setting in mind. The quarry pit and adjoining land at Batesford South about the edge of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Geelong is experiencing growth pressures that necessitate development of a new growth area from about 2025.A multidisciplinary expert team assessed the constraints, opportunities and feasibility of rehabilitating the quarry and pit lake and developing the surrounding land as Geelong’s next urban growth area.The concept is exciting and demonstrates that a former mine site could become a valued home to about 40 000–45 000 people. About 30 per cent of the land will also be developed as an ecological riverine corridor including the pit lake that will become a regionally iconic lake as the centrepiece of an urban development.Our paper outlines technical challenges and how these can be met to achieve closure and beneficial use that meets the social, economic and environmental expectations of contemporary urban planning.CITATION:Gerner, M and McCullough, C?D, 2014. This report presents a stress investigation of four coal pillars located under two depths of cover. Each coal pillar was instrumented with ten load cells designed to measure coal pressure during initial and secondary mining. The problem considered was one of uniform triaxial stress as a large coal pillar was loaded under a thick limestone bed. Special attention was given to pillar design procedure. Unconfined uniaxial compression tests were conducted for coal specimens 7/8 in., 2-1/8 in., 3 in., and 4 in. square with length to square side ratios of 1/2, 1, 1-1/2, and 2. Stress-strain curves were recorded. Six specimens were tested at each size. Results show that a coal pillar is composed of an inner zone which is highly loaded plus a region around its perimeter which has lost its elastic strength. The bearing capacity of a coal pillar consists of elastic and crushed coal response: The failure strengths have been determined and will be useful in coal recovery, mine design, and mine safety.

(communication to the Secretary *) :-Professor Hofman's paper brings the art up to . date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there was at the concentrator an unusually large production of a middle product, locally called "iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a "roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the usual construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollow cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it flush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuyeres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a fail-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow.. The fine material which had remained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. "What is CIM’s role on a planet-wide scale?That question has been coming back to the forefront of many discussions regularly in the months since we came on board as Executive Director and Vice- President International. CIM, by its name and by the nature of its history and make up, has mainly been a Canadian entity. It has been created by an act of Canadian Parliament and it is set up to work within the Canadian federal and provincial framework.Yet the name CIM is one well known and recognized for quality and professionalism worldwide. One could say that CIM has established a level of brand recognition that transcends it name and its origin. CIM has also evolved with the times, as the world has evolved and more so as the world of mining has evolved. So we stand today with a fairly large portion of our membership residing outside Canada and outside the United States. We also stand today looking back at the role CIM has played in events that we have been partners in organizing outside Canada; and for a long time CIM has provided insights into what is going on in the rest of the mining world by inviting authors and by featuring topics from around the globe.Today, Canada is still a leader in the mining industry. Canadian mining companies are involved in exploration and operations around the world. Canadian operations serve a good portion of the global demand of many metals and minerals, recently adding diamonds to the slate. Canadian expertise in various areas also makes Canada a good base for exporting a wide range of products and services around the world."

After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

The authors have done a very thorough job in analyzing the factors affecting turndown sulfur performance at Inland's No. 4 B.O.F. While many of the results are not unexpected, it is helpful I am sure to have quantified many of the relationships that the operators rely upon daily. On the other hand, however, the results shown for ladle skimming are very surprising. I do not doubt the statistical relationship shown but I feel, based on our experience at Youngstown, that some other parameter has been ignored in the data on ladle skimming. It was our experience that by skimming our hot metal transfer ladle we could reduce our lime consumption by eleven percent while obtaining sulfur removal comparable to that shown by the authors. I would like the authors comment of similar adjustments on the lime charge that were made on skimmed heats at Inland. If not, it would seem that one could gain more desulfurization in the B.O.F. by raising the hot metal manganese than by installing a skimmer. The author's state that no comparisons are valid between the data sets for the two time periods involved because of the difference in the consumption of No. 2 Bundles. I feel this in fact is one of the important conclusions to be drawn from the paper, as there seems to be approximately a 10-20 percent difference in percent of heats that are under 0.020 percent sulfur for similar conditions, which is an extremely important difference with today's demands for low sulfur. I would like the author's comments on the difference in the amount of 82 bundles consumed. Along this same line I was quite surprised by the relatively low number of heats that had a first turn down of 0.020 percent sulfur or less. Also rather disconcerting are the conditions necessary to achieve a first turn of 0.020 percent sulfur, 50 - 60 percent of the time, as required by today's specifications. It is a problem which we are well aware of, but the numbers are still shocking.

1. The investigation shows that the Wilder (locally known as the Bon Air No. 2) is the only known bed of commercial importance in Putnam County, although at least 5 coal horizons are known. All of the coal production now reported comes from this bed, which is found In a basin with no known coal outcrops. Further drilling in the east end of the basin should disclose the location of the eastern end of the axial trough and the lateral extent of the basin in Putnam County and adjoining areas in Cumberland County. Continuity of this deposit with that in the area in Putnam County north of Monterey is not conclusively established but may exist. 2 Known (measured plus indicated) reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot in place, are estimated at 29 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 28 million tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. All born coal reserves in Putnam County me under less than 400 feet of overburden.

"THE OPERATION of the Potash Company of America, Ltd., at its plant near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the result of many years of exploratory and development work, culminating in the construction of a shaft, milling, concentrating and other facilities necessary to the production of potash in a marketable form.The possibility that potash existed in •commercial quantities in Saskatchewan was first indicated in 1943, although it was not until mid-1946, when Bata Petroleums penetrated a potash bed at its Verbata No. 2 well near Unity that substantial in-ter.est was developed in the possible exploitation of this important mineral product.The Potash Company of America, which is the largest producer of pot-ash in the Carlsbad, New Mexico area, a district that has been sup-plying about 90 per cent of the North American potash demand, be-came interested in the Saskatchewan deposits •at an early stage. Its engineers made an intensive study of the western Saskatchewan area in 1947 and continued their review of operating problems throughout the next three years.""Potash"" is the commonly used general term applied to the minerals of potassium, of which there are several. The most common mineral forms in which it is produced are potassium chloride and potassium sulphate. The potash content of potassium compounds is ordinarily ex-pressed in terms of potassium oxide (K20) equivalent."

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 319 petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 1957 capable of processing 9,123,674 [ ]-barrels of crude oil daily. This was the first time in eleven years that the total number of refineries increased. The crude throughput capacity of the refineries increased 491,284 barrels daily (6 percent) above the January 1, 1956 capacity. The East Coast and Texas Gulf Coast refining districts accounted for 60 percent of the additional capacity installed. Three new refineries were put into operation on the East Coast during the year with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 154,434 barrels while the other refineries in the district report a net loss in capacity, installing equipment capable of processing 140,000 barrels, but dismantling equipment with a capacity of 150,100 barrels. In the Texas Gulf Coast district, one new refinery with a daily crude oil capacity of 5,000 barrels was placed in operation in 1956 and 143,700 barrels of crude capacity was added to existing refineries. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased from 27,145 barrels daily to 28,601 barrels in 1956.

Substantial differences between in situ and conventional technology require that in situ ore grade be established for deposit as distinct from the total contained metal value. Establishing an in situ ore grade involves determining the fraction' of the contained metal that can be leached by the fluid. This depends on the proportion of the ore minerals that occur on fluid flow paths as defined by the permeability distribution. Mechanisms involved in the in situ mining of sulfides are: oxidation of the sulfur, solution of the metals, complexing of the released metals, and a transport to a recovery point. Metal ions may be delayed or lost due to inefficiencies in these pro-cess steps or by reactions of the metal ions in solution with the rock. These reactions can involve precipitation of new phases, exchange of the metals of the interest with Ca or Na in clays or zeolites, retention of metals in oxidized mineral grains, or secondary enrichment of other sulfides along the paths of the solution flow. The efficiency of solution of metals and potential loss or delay mechanisms are controlled by local equilibria (the Eh, pH conditions) present in different parts of the ore zone. Permeability distribution in the rock mass and the coincidence of ore minerais with flow channels must be determined before a deposit can be judged suitable for in situ mining. Laboratory studies indicate that the natural permeability system is dependent on the degree of cementation of veins by late generation hydrothermal activities. The major conclusions of the study are:, 1. Deposit selection is critical; suitable deposit types include deep lying sedimentary deposits, selected zones of porphyry systems and vein controlled hydrothermal deposits; 2. Adequate laboratory and geochemical analyses should be undertaken through quantitative petrographic study and permeability mapping; and 3. Economic incentives for in situ mining must consider limitations of recovery caused by inefficiencies in dissolution and transport associated with particular deposits.

In recent years, t h e future supply of tellurium has been called into question due to the anticipated rapidly increasing demand from thin film cadmium telluride photovoltaics. Since tellurium is produced as a byproduct of other extractive processes – principally, the electrolytic refining of primary copper sulfide ore – it is important to explore the dynamics of the parent metal extraction and processing – in this case copper – when attempting to answer this question. This research explores the changing landscape of global copper production; introducing system diagramming and the concept of byproduct intensity (BPI) to illustrate concerning downward trends in tellurium supply potential. Upon closer inspection, it is concluding that, while a likely contributor to these downward trends, the increased use of non- traditional copper production techniques alone are not responsible; other factors include market substitution and incomplete data reporting. Additionally, a review of literature on tellurium recovery processing reveals a promising outlook for future supplies; highlighting potential for improvements in yield, which allow producers to make better use of what is available, even in the face of suppressed BPI.

The manufacture of iron in the Province of Quebec forms one of the most interesting subjects in the development of this great industry in America. It began soon after the first steps taken in the New England colonies, where iron was first practically made in America. In both cases the ores smelted were bog-ores. In Qaebec the first work was done in and about, the town of Three Rivers, and many interesting facts in connection with the development of this industry may be found in the paper read at the Halifax meeting, September, 1885, by Mr. James Herbert Bartlett, of Montreal,* which traces the industry from its inception, about 1730, down to 1883, at which time the St. Maurice forge is declared to be the oldest active furnace on the American continent. A few years later the Canada Iron Furnace Company, Ltd., became interested in the enterprise, the extent of which has been greatly enlarged beyond all former limits. In fact, the manufacture of this particular class of iron has never been attempted on the scale now practiced by this company. This work has been carried on for the purpose of supplying a grade of iron hitherto procurable only at heavy cost for Canadian consumption from the United States, and for English consumption from Sweden. The manufacture of iron in the Province of Quebec was based entirely on bog-ores during the period referred to; and as the supply of iron made elsewhere from cheaper ores became more abundant, the local manufacture, handicapped by want of shipping facilities, lack of capital, and other natural causes, was gradually discontinued. It was always admitted that for certain purposes the iron made in the Province possessed special value; but the demand for articles requiring such special virtue was limited, and cheaper grades were gradually substituted for general uses.
