Expert control of grinding and flotation plants has been successfully used in the minerals industry since the 1970?s. The earliest of these systems were written in a hard-coded fashion in FORTRAN, BASIC or Pascal. Second generation systems were built using the first experimental expert system shells that were being developed in the artificial intelligence community. Later systems were deployed in expert system shells designed for real-time processing plants that also included the ability to model the process with neural network models and optimize setpoint selection through the use of genetic algorithms. Significant performance increases have been achieved using these systems, but in general, they suffer from the static nature of their rules and to a degree the process models also. Typical improvements quoted in the literature suggest throughput rate increases of 4 to 8 percent and recovery increases of 1 to 4 percentage points. In over 30 years of designing and installing expert systems we have never seen performance numbers less that these but have often seen numbers in excess of the high values. However, once the system has been installed and tuned up the performance usually does not improve much thereafter. Granted, the initial increases in throughput rate and recovery are significant but a question always lingers, that is, can the expert strategies be modified further to squeeze a little more improvement out of the system. The answer to this question is a resounding yes, however a complete understanding of what we do well as designers and operators of expert control systems is required as well as how we can improve upon our best practices is required to move us from the performance plateau we have been on for a number of years to a new higher level of performance.

Sulphate concentration in groundwater is a good measure of the extent of oxidation of sulphides, provided that sulphide minerals are the primary source of the sulphate. A study was conducted near the Eustis Mine in Quebec to determine where and how the sulphate in groundwaters originated. Atmospheric precipitation is the only source of sulphate other than oxidation of sulphides, and in this study area it is equal to 0.01,. millimole per litre. The oxidation of sulphides can be divided into subsurface oxidation (mainly inorganic processes) and surface oxidation (including both organic and inorganic processes) . The maximum sulphate concentration due to subsurface oxidation of sulphides depends on the solubility of 0 2 in water and is 0.25 millimole per litre. Surface oxidation is, therefore, responsible for any amount greater than atmospheric plus subsurface contributions (0.29 millimole per litre). Surface inorganic oxidation occurs in waters with a pH greater than 15 and is controlled by the kinetics of the oxidation processes. Organic (bacterial) surface oxidation is dominant only in acid (pH< 1.5) waters. The bacterial action accelerates the oxidation of sulphides, and large quanttties of sulphate may be introduced into solution.

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal mineral lands in Idaho and classified them in detail, section by section, according to their availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal restrictions and agencies&apos; management practices. The Bureau also identified known mineral deposit areas (KMDAs) and areas conducive to oil, gas, and geothermal resources. This information is shown on maps (developed in part by geographic information system technology) that spatially compare the availability for mineral entry of Federal land with these KMDAs to demonstrate the extent and severity of restrictions on mineral entry. Idaho contains 53.1 million acres, 35.7 million (67%) of which is Federal mineral land. About 7 million acres of this land is within KMDAs that host medium-to high-value locatable mineral deposits; 36% of this land is available, 27% is slightly to moderately restricted, and 37% is severely restricted or unavailable. For the leasable minerals, about 1.8 million acres are within KMDAs that host medium-to high-value phosphate deposits, about 5.4 million acres are favorable for oil and gas resources, and 3.9 million acres for geothermal resources. The percentages of land availability are 30%, 45%, and 25% for the phosphate acreage, 38%, 34%, and 28% for the oil and gas acreage, and 43%, 30%, and 27% for the geothermal acreage.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. You’ll come away with concrete steps you can use to improve your record keeping processes. This paper will show you how to make the hard work of inventory management and ATF record keeping work hard for you.

"The year 1947 was a momentous one in the history of the petroleum industry in Canada. It was in that year that Imperial Oil Limited made its discovery at Leduc, the forerunner of other discoveries, large and small, and the spark wl1ich started a most intensive exploration and development programme there.If, to use boxing parlance, Leduc was the first blow of a one-two combination which left doubting Thomases groggy, then Redwater was the number two blow which achieved the knockout. The oil industry's exploration leaders did about-face without delay and the rush of oil operators of all classifications to western Canada began. It is still continuing, and the influx of capital which the operators have brought in and are bringing in has a bouyant effect upon the over-all economy. The boom is on, but it is a sound one, and it is difficult to conceive that it will have anything but the most beneficial effect on Canada, and particularly western Canada.The petroleum industry is an important segment of the general economy. Its activities call for tremendous amounts of capital; its employees are well paid; it is a large customer for a wide range of products of other industries; its commodities are essential to the citizens and the nation.The industry is carried on by highly aggressive and independent groups and individuals, of which a small minority are integrated while the majority are relatively small operators engaged in only one or two phases of the business. Competition is the rule and, since the nature of the business is mass production, the industry is faced from time to time with serious problems, many of which are peculiar to it."

This report presents the results of an investigation begun by the Government in the summer of 1907, the investigation being started under the immediate supervision of Dr. J. A. Holmes and continued under him as director after it was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1910, the field studies being completed in the spring of 1912. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain information on the origin of the inflammable gases in coal and the conditions under which they occur. It was especially intended to ascertain whether there was any relation between the occurrence of gas and the structural or other geologic features of the coal beds. To this end many months were spent in mines and much time was devoted to the examination of mine maps, bore-hole records, and other data made available by the kindness of various coal companies. Two fields of work were selected-one in the northern anthracite basin of Pennsylvania, where the beds are considerably flexed, and the other in the southern part of the bituminous coal field of Illinois, where the beds lie nearly horizontal. In order to take advantage of results of previous investigations of the same general subject, an extended examination was made of reports of various investigators in Europe and America. A digest of the information obtained from these publications is included in the first part of this report, which constitutes an introduction to the discussion of the conditions governing the occurrence of inflammable gas in coal beds.

The Mineral Deposits Service of the Quebec Department of Natural Resources is engaged in the preparation of metallogenic maps as a contribution to the Canadian Sub-Committee of the Metallogenic Map of North America. The preliminary work is being done on large-scale maps. The main objective is to clearly represent information on ore deposits in a suggestive way. The design of the legend to meet these requirements is discussed. As these maps are still only descriptive, a further step will be the interpretation of data into metallogenic maps with Jess emphasis on the individual deposits and more on the metallogenic factors. Both types of map should prove useful in the search for ore deposits; the first by providing at once a large amount of information, the second by suggesting the ore controls.

A new heat transfer technology --- termed Thermopump technology has been developed. This technology originates from conventional heat pipe configurations but has now evolved into its own class of heat transfer units, which we refer to as `Thermopumps (TP)&apos;. A key feature is that Thermopump technology can be applied to high temperature / high heat flux environments where conventional heat pipe technology fails. Moreover, when implemented in less demanding applications where heat pipes appear to operate, Thermopump units have been found to function more smoothly and reliably. This paper will introduce Thermopump technology and several applications of this technology in steelmaking and refining will also be discussed. In addition, this paper will focus on three classes of applications: 1) waterless, non-consumable, high efficiency Thermopump oxygen lance and/or burner for EAF&apos;s, 2) Thermopump ladle lance for the desulfurization process, and 3) Thermopump cooling panels for furnace walls and roofs. Facilities equipped with Thermopump technology are expected to he better than the current corresponding ones in terms of increasing productivity and energy efficiency while at the same time lowering operating costs.

The advance of science and technology influences the modern economy in countless ways. Older industries must adapt to changes in the marketplace, while new industries are born by applying new technology to meet consumer needs. In light of declining head grades and increased unit costs in the US minerals industry, new technological developments in the production environment are paramount to maintaining a competitive footing in the international marketplace. Micro-engineering research provides the transition between the knowledge base and the application of new technology on the production level. Economic considerations The primary goal of technical development in the production environment is to reduce unit operating costs. Simply stated, this is accomplished by improving operating efficiencies and productivities on the production level. The goal of micro-engineering research in the production environment is to evaluate promising technologies and develop the criteria necessary to apply them in operations. As such, this process is the first step toward innovation and discovery. Generally, the micro-engineering research is followed by macro-engineering development. In the production environment, there are generally more development projects than can be accomplished in a timely manner. Usually, this is the result of financial and human resource limitations. Consequently, it is necessary to prioritize the work such that the most beneficial projects are accomplished first. By performing a discounted cash flow analysis and using benefit-cost ratios (for non-mutually exclusive alter¬natives) or net present value criteria (for mutually exclusive alternatives), the projects can be rated from best to worst. In this way, the financial and human resources can be best allocated to first complete those projects giving the highest returns before moving on to other activities. Moreover, this information is a prerequisite for management to justify additional financial or human resources.

THE purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the, start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and- other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title "Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. .

DEPLETION is a subject of vital importance to the mining industry. Yet, in spite of its importance, its significance is not generally understood. The purpose of this discussion is to clarify the main aspects of the subject from the viewpoint of a metal mine taxpayer. To define the term depletion, it is necessary to distinguish among its various uses. In the economic or geological sense, depletion means the exhaustion of a natural resource. A mineral deposit is a wasting asset and once exhausted is nonrenewable. Millions of years were needed to produce an ore deposit, which may be consumed in a few years and which cannot be replaced except by the discovery of new sources of supply. The wasting asset feature of the mining industry has a vital bearing on the impact of the Federal Income Tax Law on this industry. This is recognized in the law by the various provisions dealing with the depletion allowance, and in this sense the term depletion has an income tax meaning. Depletion from the tax viewpoint means the statutory deduction from gross income designed to permit the return to the taxpayer of the capital consumed in the production and sale of a natural resource. The mining enterprise realizes income on the extraction and sale of minerals and a portion of the income realized represents capital consumed. As the resource is exhausted, the mining enterprise approaches the end of its existence unless new sources of supply can be acquired. Depletion from the tax viewpoint is a creature of statute with limited meaning and application and, in essence, is a method for amortizing the value of the primary asset of a mining enterprise. An example can best illustrate the significance of depletion from the tax viewpoint. Compare a manufacturing concern with a mining company. In computing taxable income of a manufacturing concern, consideraion is given to the cost of producing such income, the principal costs being capital investment for plant and equipment, labor, and raw materials going into the products produced. A mining enterprise, on the other hand, is faced with a different problem because its principal asset is the natural resource which it is producing. In computing its taxable income, consideration is given also to its capital investment for plant and equipment and the cost of labor; but in addition, recognition must be given to the fact that a portion of the proceeds realized on the sale of mineral represents capital. Without such recognition, the mining company would be taxed not on income but on capital and income, and Congress has never intended that capital be taxed as income. Thus, when depletion allowable is referred to in the mining industry, it means the statutory deduction allowable in computing taxable income of a mining enterprise. For guidance the appropriate provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, Income Tax Regulations, and the judicial decisions interpreting and construing them must be examined. It is important to identify and distinguish three methods of determining the allowance for depletion: 1—Cost depletion, 2—Discovery depletion, and 3—Percentage depletion. The basic method is cost depletion and in addition some taxpayers may be entitled to use discovery depletion and other taxpayers may be entitled to use percentage depletion. Discovery depletion and percentage depletion, however, are mutually exclusive and if a taxpayer is entitled to percentage depletion, he is not entitled to discovery depletion. By statute, a metal mine taxpayer is entitled to use cost depletion or percentage depletion, whichever produces the highest deduction. Thus, discovery depletion is merely of academic interest to such taxpayers and to most others. Briefly and broadly speaking, these methods of determining depletion may be described as follows: 1—Cost Depletion: Under this method, the allowable deduction for depletion is based upon the cost of the particular deposit to the taxpayer, unless the deposit was owned prior to Mar. 1, 1913, in which case the taxpayer may use the fair market value of the deposit on that date or actual cost, whichever is higher. This method is sometimes described as basis depletion or adjusted basis depletion, but in this discussion it will be referred to as cost depletion. 2—Discovery Depletion: Under this method, the allowable deduction for depletion is based on the fair market value of the deposit at the date of discovery or within 30 days thereafter and was originally designed to take into account deposits discovered subsequent to Feb. 28, 1913. 3—Percentage Depletion: Under this method, the allowable deduction for depletion is based on a specified percentage of the income realized during the taxable year from a particular property. As stated, the concept of depletion is based upon the exhaustion of a natural resource as distinguished, for example, from the concept of depreciation based on the exhaustion of property used in trade or business. From the tax viewpoint, depletion first became important in the administration of the Corporation Tax Act of 1909, which provided for an excise tax on net income. As soon as this act went into effect, mining taxpayers attempted to claim a deduction for depletion in computing net income although there was no specific mention of a deduction for depletion in the statute. The courts in these cases uniformly held that the statute did not permit an allowance for depletion in computing net income and also held that the provision permitting a reasonable allowance for depreciation did not include depletion. Withdrawing timber in coal mines is done for the purpose of inducing the roof to cave in the mined-out areas and thereby relieve stresses in the immediate roof material over the working places adjacent to the breakline of the roof, thus preventing the crushing of the ends of pillars and adding to the safety of those engaged in pillar extraction. A secondary purpose is the recovery of timber for further use either as prop-, crossbars, lagging, sprags or cap pieces. At some mines timber is withdrawn as a precaution against fire which may he of spontaneous origin, because wood always aids a fire of any origin. With some of the power-driven types of machines now in use a greater proportion of mine timber may be recovered, and in mines where pillars are left too narrow for their removal some of the timber in rooms might be salvaged for further use.

"A comprehensive geotechnical characterization has been undertaken at the El Teniente mine to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour strength properties of the primary copper ore. The Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modelling approach is used to simulate the mechanical behaviour of this heavily and unfractured rock mass. The micro-parameters of the model have been calibrated against mechanical properties and scaling laws for intact rock and veins, in order to represent virtual samples of four different geotechnical units. Results can be used to predict the rock mass scale effects, anisotropy, and brittleness properties that cannot be obtained using empirical methods.INTRODUCTIONThe primary copper ore at the El Teniente mine is described as very competent and massive, given that it exhibits a brittle behaviour (Rojas, Cavieres, Dunlop, & Gaete, 2000). This description is coherent with the geological description of the rock mass, which does not have discontinuities match as the definition provided by International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM, 1981). Only faults can be classified as discontinuities, but they are widely spaced. The primary copper ore has a high frequency of veins, where the cooper mineralization is hosted, these vein network structures are known as stockwork. Soft veins containing weak minerals as infill (chalcopyrite and anhydrite) control the disassembling of the rock mass during caving (Brzovic & Villaescusa, 2007).Presently, there are mainly two traditional methods used to estimate the strength of the rock mass: 1) determination of the strength envelope of the rock mass using scaling parameters from laboratory tests and 2) using numerical modelling based on back analysis of previous experiences of failure observed and measured in mining or civil excavations. The primary copper ore of El Teniente mine has no fractures; therefore, it is difficult to determine a rating that would enable to scale laboratory data, such as, RMR (Laubscher, 1977) or GSI (Hoek, 1994). This is the reason why the first option is not valid unless the entry data is manipulated or adjusted in order to obtain reasonable results. The second option requires, in general, a good characterization of a previous failure event in the rock mass, which is not always available. In recent years, new techniques of numerical modeling have been developed (PFC3D, ELFEN, Abaqus). Those methodologies are the third way to estimate the strength of the rock mass, but they are still in development. Particularly, the concept of SRM developed by Itasca is implemented in this study (Pierce, Mas Ivars, Cundall, & Potyondy, 2007; Mas Ivars et al., 2011), aiming to capture the real behaviour of the rock mass."

Introduction Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, work-ers often do not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Important information about incidents is either not com-municated effectively or not at all to those affected by the event. The "Emergency Communication Triangle" safety talk focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. It presents a procedure using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. The talk includes graphics for use during the presentation, as well as references for more information. Background Interviews with 48 miners who had escaped one of three different underground mine fires revealed that warning information provided to them was inadequate. Either insufficient information was provided to miners inby the fire areas or they failed to ask the questions needed to let them plan and execute an effective escape. Most of the miners who evacuated from these three mines did not have information that would allow them to make decisions about efficient escapes. The communication breakdown came from two directions: (1) the individuals providing the warning did not offer details about the situations even though some were known and (2) the individuals who received the warnings did not ask for clarification of the situation. The lack of information allowed miners to continue attempting to place cues into normal frameworks after they should have evaluated the situation as abnormal and threatening. The uncertainty created by the lack of information influenced their decision-making and therefore their actions. Approach Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have developed a training intervention that can be used by senders and receivers of warnings during a mine emergency. This material was developed for use in short safety training sessions such as start-of-shift safety talks. The information can be presented in about 15 minutes. Although the illustrations were taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. How It Works During the safety talk, miners learn about the six categories of critical information that should be provided during emergency communications: Who, Where, What, Miners, Event, and Response. • Who: When reporting an emergency or receiving a warning, the first thing a miner must do is identify himself or herself. This is important because people react differently based on who gives them information. • Where: Giving or finding out the location of the problem is important. Of the 48 miners interviewed about their escape, only 2 knew where the fire was located. However, this information was known by either the dispatcher or the person who discovered the fire. • What: Miners must tell or ask exactly what is happening. At one mine fire, miners near the phone heard the message to evacuate and went to gather the others on their crew. One worker shouted to a machine operator: "Come on down to the mantrip. We&apos;re going out." Because it was close to quitting time, the machine operator thought they were just leaving the section a little early and went through his normal end-of-shift routine, wasting valuable time. After giving or obtaining the three initial pieces of critical information, miners can then give or obtain details about the response in progress. • Miners: Is anyone hurt? Has everyone been accounted for? When and where was a missing person last seen?

During the early stages of the mining industry of the United States an apparently inexhaustible supply of high-quality, easily accessible coal made the product cheap and the attendant mining methods wasteful of recoverable coal. Because coal from advance places could be mined with less effort and a large outwit obtained as the entries advanced, much of the coal left in pillars to support the roof was lost. Squeezes often developed in these mined-over areas, or, if pillars were of sufficient size to-prevent squeeze, the roof would be so weakened by long exposure that any pillar recovery was extremely hazardous. As the value of unmined coal increased, a high recovery of the available coal became necessary. Numerous plans were tried during the period that followed, some of the methods proving successful while others were complete failures or only partly successful. As a better knowledge was pained of the roof strata and its behavior, however, pillar mining became more successful and methods suited to special roof conditions were developed.
