A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

Thank you Tom and JM for that nice introduction. The remarks I am about to make rely on a large way on comments made by Barrick's Chief Counsel, Patrick Garver, to an internal meeting of Barrick's senior staff. I plagiarized so much from his notes that I thought that I should provide attribution. I did get his consent to borrow so freely. What I have done is take his general comments and used my conversations with CEO's and other participants in the industry to enhance the message with concrete examples that underscore the points I wish to make. What you are about to hear is my personal view – I am not speaking as a representative of any company. With that introduction, now would be a good time to give you the main theme of my talk: The SEC should change its rule making to a more public cooperative approach. If that were to happen the SEC would avoid some of the harm it has been doing to the companies in this sector and the very shareholders it seeks to protect.

For whether we meet in Canada, in England, or elsewhere, the Institute is always received as though no political or geographical divisions separated its members from those of congenial associations in the land of its host. In truth, the title which we have assumed claims for the sphere of our activities the whole American continent, regardless of such trifling details as boundary-lines. The fact that we meet to communicate each other's experience, to discuss our difficulties, and to seek each other's aid in solving the intricate problems that so often present themselves in the course of our profes¬sional life, is an acknowledgment of our individual helpless¬ness; and therefore an argument for united effort. THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. "In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

"TEXADA Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, about 100 miles northwest of Vancouver. The property of Texada Mines Ltd. lies on the southwest coast of the northern end of the Island. A part of the ""Sunshine Coast,"" the climate is moderate, with about 30 inches of rain during winter months and relatively dry summers. Texada has been shipping high-grade magnetite concentrate continuously since 1952 to Japanese ore buyers. In 1959, a 3,000-foot tunnel was driven just above sea level to explore the possible downward extension of known orebodies then being mined by open pit. In January of 1961, because the open-pit operations had a limited life, C. C. Huston and Associates were brought in as mining consultants to do a feasibility study on the possibility of going underground for production. This study was completed in March, 1961. With the completion of the report, the Company went to Japan seeking a ,long-term contract to justify the capital outlay necessary for setting up an underground operation. Concurrently, underground diamond drilling revealed more ore, and the Company planned some modifications to the concentrator for increasing the copper recovery. By November, 1961, a ten-year contract was signed with Japanese ore buyers for the sale of 450,-000 long tons of concentrates beginning in October, 1963. Since that time, the Company has built its own 65 000-ton ore carrier and an additional three-year contract has been negotiated, with an annual tonnage increase of from 450,000 to 550,000 tons."

Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals Oy operates copper and nickel smelters, three sulphuric acid plants and nickel refinery at Harjavalta and copper refinery and precious metal plant at Pori. The by-products of these plants are presented in this paper. The by-products of the smelters include products from slag cleaning of flash smelting furnaces and converters, flue dusts and smelter off-gases. Weak acid and sludges from cleaning of smelter off-gases and acids are the by-products of the acid plants. The by-products out of the copper refinery are crystallized metal sulphates and sludges from electrolyte purification, on which a co-production process of the copper tankhouse is based. The main by-products of the precious metals plant are products from anode slime treatment and platinum metal group concentrates in the recovery of precious metals. Sludges from nickel matte leaching and precipitates from solution purification are the by-products of the nickel refinery. The formation, treatment and processing as well as the research work done for the utilization instead of dumping of the by-products in the production of copper and nickel will also be discussed in this paper.

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.

"The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) operates a gold and silver refining toll operation in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The silver refining line is a recent addition and was commissioned in 2005. One source of silver in the refinery is from gold doré which undergoes Miller chlorination before electrorefining to 99.99% cathode gold. Treatment of the Miller salt or silver-copper chloride produced consisted of a 2-stage high temperature reduction process step using soda ash prior to 2005. Copper-rich silver bars were produced and shipped offsite for further refining.The copper-rich bars could not be blended into sufficient high grade silver doré to dilute the copper and allow electrorefining in a silver nitrate medium. A new wet process was developed and commissioned to replace the high temperature reduction and allow removal of bulk copper. Thus upgraded impure silver produced was cast into anode for electrorefining to 99.9% purity silver flake. The 2005 RCM Hydromet Slag process is presented as well as its more current version. In addition, mention is made of a novel processing scenario for the introduction of Miller chlorination silver into the electrorefining circuit."

This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of severance taxes on mineral production. The rates, bases, and other features of State severance tax legislation as of March 1978 are presented, as are the amounts of State severance tax collections for fiscal year 1977, Some statistical comparisons between severance tax collections, total State tax collections, and total value of mineral production in the States involved are presented to portray the relative importance of severance taxes both in State tax revenue systems and in mineral industry revenues. A general discussion of the purposes and principles of taxation, the unique nature of a mining enterprise, the various types of taxes imposed on mineral production, and the character and rationale of the severance tax and its impacts on mining firms sets the severance tax in perspective. A bibliography of materials on the severance tax is included.

The objectives for closure of a hard rock mine include minimizing long term environmental liability, attaining regulatory compliance, and maintaining geotechnical stability, while closing as cost-effectively as possible. Proper planning for closure should come during the feasibility study, design and permitting phases, and during operations as updates. The lack of a proper or updated closure plan can result in severe environmental and economic consequences. Effective mine closure is the result of a combination of innovative concepts, long-term commitments, and multi-party cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss concepts, commitments, and cooperation as they relate to an effective closure plan.

"1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come :from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sevanee has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although some coal has been produced from them.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on l,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed ·were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal are estimated in beds 28 inches and more 'thick. This recovery is based on total thickness of coal in the bed (less partings 3/8-inch thick or more), rather than on the thickness of the coal actually mined. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian Region. The combined weighted average recovery for the Sewanee and Battle Creek beds in Marion County, as determined by this investigation, is 60.9 percent. Based on this, the recoverable reserves of coal in Marion County are estimated at 34 million tons."

The CIM Mineral Exploration Best Practice Guidelines (the Exploration Guidelines) have been prepared to assist professional geoscientists and engineers to conduct consistently high-quality work in order to maintain public confidence. The Exploration Guidelines are meant to assist professional geoscientists and exploration practitioners in planning, supervising, and executing exploration programs. In Canada, there are generally two types of public resource reporting: “Disclosure”, as defined by NI 43-101, is the reporting of technical information to the public and market participants for securities legislation purposes where a Qualified Person (QP) must be involved, and reporting of exploration information for governmental agencies to support obligations under laws including the Mining Acts of each of the Provinces and Territories. The Exploration Guidelines are also relevant where the results will not be publicly reported but are intended for internal company use. While this document is intended as guidance for work conducted or supervised by geoscientists in Canada, many of the practices described herein can be adapted to mineral exploration activities in other countries. The Exploration Guidelines are not intended to inhibit original thinking, or to prevent the application of new approaches that may develop into fundamental components of successful mineral exploration programs. Rather than provide prescriptive solutions to specific issues, they include general guidelines for current professional practice and to demonstrate and defend the merits of new methods. These guidelines do not preclude individuals and companies from developing more detailed guidelines specific to their own requirements. The initial version of the Exploration Guidelines was prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Exploration Best Practices Committee and adopted by CIM Council on August 20, 2000. On January 9, 2018, CIM Council formed a new committee, the Mineral Resources and Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) with a mandate to, among other things, update the Exploration Best Practice Guidelines. The mandate for the committee was accepted by CIM Council on March 2, 2018. The new document was adopted by the CIM Council on November 23, 2018.

ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. Spendlove, Supervisory metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, College Park Metallurgy Research Center, lifts been of much value in preparing this report.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. The evaluation of mining projects requires a methodology that will give flexibility and manage the existing uncertainty within the projects. The discount cash flow (DCF) and other traditional evaluation approaches, which are widely used in evaluating a significant number of mining projects, have simply assumed that the main variables remain constant in their evaluation; elements such as discounted rate, mine life, operating cost and production rate. The DCF ignores managementÆs flexibility to adapt and reforecast and revise decisions. Real options valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methodologies that provide a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variables movements. ROV brings more variables into the evaluation model compared to DCF and assumes them as uncertain and dependent. Finally, ROV provides a range of solutions that can assist in managing this flexibility.This paper endeavours to compare ROV and DCF for mining projects comprehensively and applies these two techniques in the model. The paper shows that ROV will be inclusive of extra value in mining projects due to variables not allowed for, or even ignored, when the DCF model alone is used. One of the significant advantages of the ROV method is being able to evaluate mining projects under different scenarios from the inception of the projects. Furthermore, ROV gives the ability to evaluate the mining project while allowing for abandonment, temporary suspension, or expanding the mining project. In other words, the ROV evaluation process creates an analytical environment, which allows for optimisation of the mining plan within the mining project, as well as the ability to change the capital structure dependant on existing circumstances over the life of the project. The ROV is a new evaluation method that can add value in mining project analysis and offers opportunities to amplify gains, or to mitigate losses.
