"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

"The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. Optimisation of a real-time at-line monitoring system for control of industrial granule coating quality is presented. The system is based on a fluorescence imaging system, because fluorescence originates in the interiors of enzyme granules but is significantly quenched by a polymer coating (which is needed due to environmental precautions). We have developed an image analytical system for direct prediction of coating quality, which is based on application of the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) for image complexity characterisation; AMT is briefly described. The first part of the presentation addresses pixel sampling strategies within a digital industrial image, inherent in application of AMT, in which the unfolded image is regarded as a one-dimensional object in analogy with 1D process sampling in Theory of Sampling (TOS). The effects of random, stratified and systematic pixel selections in the unfolded image are evaluated. Also factors such as the fraction of image pixels and the effects of specific unfolding strategies (there are three principal strategies, termed æchopÆ, æsnakeÆ and æspiralÆ respectively) are investigated. It turns out that unsuspected artifacts are sometimes produced, related to the specifics of the unfolding procedure, which interferes with a straightforward 1D TOS process sampling analogy. These artifacts have a wider interest û among others, for 2D sampling û and therefore receive special attention in this presentation. The optimal pixel selection strategy for the AMT algorithm is found to be systematic or stratified sampling (not surprising according to TOS) of 500+ initiating points, but need to be unfolded in the novel spiral- or snake-wise fashions in order to effectively counteract these artifacts. This also has a general impact on various suggested standard schemes for 2D grid-sampling, among others, from the geoscience realms. The second part of the presentation is directed towards optimal image analytical sampling of a continuous series of fluorescent images (imaging of conveyor belts of æinfinite lengthÆ), ie optimisation of process image sampling. The minimum number of images needed to uphold a sufficiently good on-line estimate of the quality control (QC) parameter in question is found to correspond to the relatively high sampling rate of 15 - 20 per cent, which can be shown to be related to an intrinsic very high measurement error level (25 per cent) of a mandated analytical reference method.

Introduction Very little fundamental research has been done on asbestos fibre to cake maximum advantage of its properties and to determine in what commercial products it can best be utilized. For the research chemist who is associated with asbestos development work, a thorough study of mineralogical information on asbestos deposits would furnish reliable information on the rock formations and the mineral impurities closely associated with the asbestos. Furthermore, ?he must have an intimate knowledge of the uses of the fibre in various products so that he can visualize the importance of the fibre and the role it plays in industry. Some of the properties of asbestos fibres such as strength, composition, length, harshness or softness, and mineral associates are of considerable importance to the manufacturer because they are responsible for many production difficulties. Fibre Strength It has been known for some time chat asbestos filaments have considerable tensile strength. These strengths have been referred to merely as 'weak' to 'very strong'. Not until recently have numerical values been applied to the strengths of asbestos fibres. But today we can take a thin fibre filament and mount it between two holders and apply a gradually increasing load or pull until the fibre breaks. By measuring the cross sectional area of the filament and the amount of load applied, we can calculate the tensile strength of the fibre in terms of pounds per square inch. This type of test is slow and rather difficult, but the fundamental data obtained furnish important basic information that can be applied to mechanical processing equipment and to certain asbestos products.

"It is well understood that the flow of liquid metal in the mold region of the caster can have a notable effect on the overall solidification behavior in aluminum casting. Previously our group has characterized the flow in this region in a water model, using particle imaging velocimetry. The flow is significantly effected by the specifics of the metal delivery system, i.e. size, geometry, used during the cast. Recently, a time-averaged 3D numerical model of the nozzle, combo bag and sump region has been developed and its validity has been tested against experimental data. Cases were run for different sized combo bags as well as bags that have been blocked. The results show satisfactory agreement between the physical and mathematical models.IntroductionFluid flow in the head of an electromagnetic (EM) and direct chill (DC) ingots has been shown to effect many important operational parameters in casting such as superheat removal, macrosegregation, and hot cracking. In most cases, the momentum from the nozzle is diverted through a delivery system, termed a bag, before entering the mold region. The specific geometries of the bags vary widely from operator to operator suggesting that there is still some question as to the optimum design. Several studies [1-4] have been carried out to understand the influence of the bag design on the solidification behavior in aluminum casters. However, few studies have included numerical prediction with experimental verification. Unfortunately, many simulations performed today still do not accurately account for flow in such devices.Recently, a significant amount of research into the flow resulting from the metal delivery systems has been performed [5-8]. The thrust of this research has been characterizing the flow patterns by a measurement technique called particle imaging velocimetry. The data suggest that the method of delivering the liquid metal into the mold region has a significant effect on the nature of the flow. With a detailed set of quantitative data from a water model, a numerical model can be built and tested to ensure a proper description of the flow field. The computational model used in these simulations is designed to represent a laboratory scale model of a caster in which ""combo"" bags were simulated. Such bags are mostly of a densely woven glass fiber material with low permeability to aluminum. ""Windows"", of a more open weave, permit aluminum to flow from the bag, see Fig. I. Two different sized combo bags were modeled, each subject to two different outflow window configurations. Furthermore, experimental measurements [9] were used to validate the model results."

In many instances, blasting exerts the dominant control over the economics and safety of excavation, where the materials involved are too hard and tough to be fragmented efficiently by other means. However, associated with the fragmentation process other effects very often result that are not desirable and may even be hazardous, such as fly rock, air blast, excessive overbreak, and damaging ground virbrations. It has always been the desire of those concerned with blasting to better control the forces involved so as to improve the breakage of materials, but at the same time reduce, or eliminate if possible, the unwanted side effects. Until the last decade or two, little was known of the phenomena concerned with blasting. However, since that time many investigators have studied blast mechanisms produced from both chemical and nuclear explosions, with the result that general concepts of the principles have been developed. But, in general, it is assumed that the energy from the explosion would be propagated spherically throughout the material, the latter of which for convenience of analyses is considered homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the properties are the same in all directions, However, rocks are not isotropic as a rule, and evidence clearly indicates blasting forces rarely function uniformly or in spherical form as theorized.

(communication to the Secretary*). -Apropos of the experimental reduction of copper from cuprous chloride by fusion with ground limestone and coke, as described by Messrs. Laist and Frick, and also proposed for use at Chuquicamata., it might be of interest to refer briefly to the experience at Argentine, Kan., in the smelting of the suboxide of copper (as produced in the Hunt and Douglas process) containing appreciable quantities of chlorides. In the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 10, 1911, I. gave some account of what had appeared to be crucial difficulties with the Hunt and Douglas process, and how the filter-press difficulty had been so rapidly overcome after my discovery of the effect of the sodium salts in the leaching solutions. I also described the effect of the cupola furnace gases upon the lime rock with which I had replaced the coke in the absorption tower, which apparently showed the presence of considerable-chlorine, clue to the imperfect conversion of the subchloride to suboxide, as well as that clue to the difficulties of washing thoroughly the suboxide with the means provided, and also to the presence of chlorides in the cement copper which was smelted With the suboxide. The fumes from the cupola, when issuing direct into the atmosphere, were very dense and white, except when a hot furnace top caused a reddish tinge due to dust. These, fumes had a peculiarly suffocating effect, so that when they were blown over into the town the population suffered the greatest actual distress, not the mere annoyance which would have been clue to a disagreeable odor. The absorption tower had been built at the instance of the city authorities to abate this nuisance, and not with the idea of making any additional metal savings. A serious feature in connection with the Argentine experience with the Hunt and Douglas process was, that it had been implicitly assumed that there could be no metal loss in the Hunt and Douglas process itself, and that all attempts to locate the ruinous copper losses which were accumulating in the metallurgical accounts were devoted to the roasting department. It is possibly unfortunate for metallurgical advance along these particular lines that just about the time of this discovery of this previously unsuspected volatilization loss, in the smelting of the suboxide, the Kansas City company made a contract with the Western Union Telegraph Co. for its supply of copper sulphate and the Hunt and Douglas

The project had required the mine engage with the communities most affected by the mine development, its operation, and closure. In this sense, operating within this social context has required Antamina to first be effective in understanding who the affected people are –at the local, regional, national and international levels. This understanding is also a process that requires time. Through the HWG, the company has achieved engagement, as well as an understanding an appreciation of viewpoints and perspective that has resulted in the protection of HNP, as well as the timely development of the project, with support of stakeholders. Therefore, the experience of the HWG was become for other natural resource projects in complex settings, involving national and international stakeholders and protected or sensitive areas.

"The time-dependent behavior of brittle rocks during stress relaxation is of great interest for mining industry, nuclear waste disposal as well as tunneling and underground construction. Several studies have shown that both elastic as well as inelastic deformation occur during stress relaxation (Emery, 1964; Zang & Berckhemer, 1989). While elastic strain occurs already during the drilling process, inelastic deformation is time-dependent and can endure for hours, days or weeks. To investigate the evolution of microcracks during core relaxation, two crystalline core samples were recovered from high in situ stress conditions in Europe’s deepest mine in Pyhäsalmi (Finland). Samples were prepared for testing within one hour after coring such that a large portion of the time-dependent component of relaxation could be recorded over several days using ultrasonic velocity as well as acoustic emission (AE) measurements.Results from AE analysis show an exponential decrease in the number of events over a period of several hours. Repeated sudden increases of acoustic events can be related to the propagation or the interaction of cracks. In the first hours of recording also the signal energies reached the highest values and the increases in signal energy correlate well with increased event rates. On additional drill cores, P-wave velocities were measured parallel and in 45° distances perpendicular to the core axis. After core recovery, stress-induced microcracking caused an exponential decrease in wave velocities similar to AE rates. Lowest compressional wave velocities were measured parallel to the core axis and thus normal to the foliation and in the direction of the maximum in situ stress component. The highest measured velocities occurred parallel to the foliation plane. Within the samples, the anisotropy ratios were up to 1.37 at the beginning of the measurements and increased to values of up to 1.8 after 45 days. The wave velocity anisotropy is in agreement with the in situ stress orientations."

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. ZTEM is a natural field airborne EM technology that is in its 10TH year of service and is widely used for porphyry copper exploration around the world, yet is still considered a new technology. ZTEM uses EM fields generated by worldwide thunderstorm activity as is primary source field. Its large depth of investigation (>1km), its sensitivity to weak lateral resistivity contrasts and the relative simplicity of its EM fields for computer modelling are among its greatest attributes. ZTEM has helped discover blind porphyry copper deposits and is also widely used in unconformity uranium, epithermal gold and geothermal exploration around the world.

"Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. Similar trends were observed in plant.INTRODUCTIONlead-zinc sulfide minerals play an important role in the production of lead and zinc metals in the mineral processing industry (Luo, Feng et al. 2016). Due to complexity of the lead-zinc ores mineralogy, in some situations, their flotation properties vary significantly from one deposit to another one even in itself (Bulatovic 2007)."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic de stressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 2 ½ -week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

The mine evaluation process, composed of the designing, planning and valuation of a mine project, is, among other variables, based on an estimated orebody model. However, as the information from the drill holes is limited, it is impossible to know with certainty the mineral content in each block within the estimated block model. Consequently, uncertainty about the value of metal grades, or other geological attributes, arises because of the lack of information at unsampled locations. This is one of the reasons why, in any mine operation, there will always exist a divergence between estimated and real values. Cut-off grade optimisation is the process used to determine the operating mining strategy (long-term production scheduling) that will maximise the total profit value (normally referred as the net present value (NPV)) of a mine operation. This is done by defining a dynamic cut-off grade policy which is constrained by the production capacity of the mining, mill and refining.Real options is a type of contract, written on real assets such as mining, oil and other natural resource industries, that gives you the right but not the obligation to exercise the contract. It is based on operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine decision makers to react to either good or bad operational and economic events in the future. But, what do geostatistics and cut-off grade optimisation have to do with the application of real options in a mine project evaluation process? The objective of this paper is to answer the previous question by showing how geostatistics combined with cut-off grade optimisation are key tools for corporate/managerial decision makers, which allow them not only to analyse the resource/reserves of their projects, but also to generate operational strategies that can maximise project value by minimising the downside risk due to ore tonnes and grade uncertainties, while achieving operational and physical constraints such as mining and processing capacities. A real copper grade open pit mine project is used as a case study.

Wind erosion can be a major cause of the loss and dispersion of tailings material from a tailings dam into its surrounding environment. Such dust dispersion can be a serious nuisance, as well as a health hazard to inhabitants in nearby settlements, and can also damage the health of animals, degrade crops, making them less marketable, and cause soil and water pollution. The problem of wind erosion can affect tailings dams in all types of climate, but becomes worse as climatic aridity increases. Because clouds of dust are often observed billowing across the top surfaces of tailings dams in dry windy weather, there is a common misconception that the dust arises from wind erosion of the top surface. As a result, much effort and money is vainly spent on treating the tops of tailings dams to prevent dust generation, whereas the slopes of the dams are the true major dust source. This paper briefly reviews what is known of erosion of tailings dams and then proceeds to describe the mechanics of wind erosion in general, and how it affects tailings dams in particular. Finally, recommendations are made for mitigating wind erosion of tailings dams and the resulting blowing dust.

PREVIOUS investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such com- pounds. The present contribution deals with the float- ability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-g. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen." General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Lime additions were varied to secure four 'final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent CaO, 0.003 per cent CaO, and 0.02 per cent CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice.
