"TAILINGS REVEGETATIONWelcome to the Revegetation Session. My instructions are to introduce the Speakers and to provide a general introduction.I do the latter with humility not only because of a lack of personal experience or because tailings revegation is not well established technology, but because any general statement on a country or industry as diverse as the Canadian Mining Industry is bound to be wrong somewhere.Laying aside normal standards of accuracy I proceed as follows:In considering the question of tailings revegetation, one asks two basic questions:1. What ought to be done?2. What can be done?The first question can be broken down into three kinds of criteria or objectives:a) Legislativeb) Technicalc) AestheticThe first I leave to the politicians and the last I will avoid. Aesthetics is the philosphy of taste. It is concerned with the appreciation of things rather than what they really are. It is much easier to get into an argument on aesthetics than to get out of it feeling you have said something of consequence.Technical criteria can be divided into the following sub-objectives: 1. To isolate the tailings basin so surrounding land is not degraded. The first step here is stabilization of the surface to prevent wind and water erosion."

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. "Methods have been developed to measure the physical properties of molten materials relevant to the fluid flow in high temperature processes. Data for the densities, viscosities and surface tensions of Al-, Ni- and Fe-based alloys are compared with (i) values for the pure metals and (ii) estimated values obtained from models making use of chemical composition of the alloy. Experimental values for metallurgical slags are also given and compared with estimated values.1 IntroductionPhysical property data has proved very useful in improving process control and product quality. For instance, in the continuous casting of steel the viscosity (TJ) of the mould flux is important since it determines (i) the optimum casting conditions, nVc = 2.5±1 dPas (m min-1) where V c is the casting speed and (ii) the level of slag entrapment (which leads to inclusions) in the metal. Thus data for properties like viscosity are exceedingly useful in understanding the process and the problems encountered and the causes of defects and problems.Another interesting development which has helped to increase our knowledge of processes and improve process control and product quality is the development of mathematical models of the fluid and heat flow in the process. These models have been developed to the stage where one of the prime requirements is for good physical property data for the industrial materials involved. Recently, Oxley [1] has shown that the use of reliable, experimental, property values for the commercial alloy in a commercial software package produced a significant improvement in the prediction of casting defects. Thus reliable property data are required for liquid metals but also for (i) liquid slags since many processes involve the use of a slag to refine and protect the metal or to lubricate the mould and (ii) refractories, sand and investment moulds."

In general the software required by a blast designer includes tools that graphically present blast designs (surface & underground), can analyze a design or predict its result, and can assess blasting results. As computers develop and computer literacy continues to rise the development of and use of such tools will spread.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

THE present list of problems relating to the physical chemistry of steelmaking has been prepared by the Committee on the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, from answers to a questionnaire Submitted to a number of metallurgists engaged in both industrial and educational work throughout the United States. The purpose of the project is to make available to research laboratories a list of problems, all reduced to their simplest terms, the solution of which would aid in creating a better understanding of the steelmaking process. It is not intended to restrict the problems to practical steelmaking. The list also includes the study of the properties, and their correlation, as well as the physical and chemical reactions, of all Substances that occur or that may be in any way associated with steelmaking operations, Such as metallic substances, refractories, nonmetallic inclusions, and the constituents of slags. Many of the problems can be carried out in university or other research laboratories. Others may be most successfully attacked by cooperation of the research men with the operating personnel. It is the Committee's earnest wish that this cooperation be fostered. It is requested that investigators who are working on any of the problems listed and who anticipate future publication of their results, notify the Secretary of the Committee that such investigation is in progress. Suggested additions to the present list are also requested. The Committee is undertaking to act as a clearing house for information regarding the topics in this field that are being actually studied. Interested persons are invited to correspond with the Secretary. I. Data involved in the state of equilibrium for the various systems (laboratory work, almost entirely). A. Determination of the specific heats of open-hearth slags, including liquid silicates, if possible.

A menu-driven, linear-programming- based, user friendly computer program was developed to assist mine managers in determining optimal longwall panel dimensions for a given set of operating conditions. A sensitivity analysis must be performed by varying key mining and configurational parameters over an expected, practical range during the optimization process. Results from analysis of a base case mine indicated that no single combination of longwall panel length and face width is optimal for all operating situations. Each mine manager must therefore look closely at his operating situation and determine the proper dimensions to minimize total mining cost.

"Die cast aluminum wheels are one of the most difficult automotive castings to produce because of stringent cast surface and internal quality requirements. As part of a collaborative research agreement between researchers at the University of British Columbia and Canadian Auto Parts Toyota Incorporated, work has been underway to predict heat transport and porosity formation in die cast A356 wheels. The basic heat transfer equations have been solved using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS to which specialized routines have been added to predict porosity. Preliminary work on predicting porosity formation focused on using the Niyama parameter as a measure of the probability of porosity. The latest version of the model incorporates a new fundamentally based porosity criterion, which takes into account the effect of hydrogen concentration. The development of this model together with its application to a series of cylindrical test castings as well as a production cast wheel are presented.I. IntroductionDie cast aluminum wheels are one of the most difficult automotive castings to produce because of stringent cast surface and internal quality requirements. Microporosity, in particular, is a common defect that can adversely affect wheel quality. The mechanism of microporosity formation in aluminum alloys is complex owing to its dependence on the interaction of a number of phenomena occurring during solidification including the decrease in hydrogen solubility, the decrease in volume, the development of the solidification structure, and the increase in difficulty in interdendritic feeding [1]. As a result, the amount, size, and distribution of microporosity is affected by a large number of casting parameters including thermal variables, melt composition, grain structure, modification, and inclusion content, making optimization by trial-and-error methodologies difficult.The use of criteria functions, based on thermal conditions during casting, offers a relatively simple approach to predicting microporosity. In practical terms, they are useful because they provide a straightforward method of assessing the impact of varying casting parameters on porosity through various thermal parametersl21 such as thermal gradient, cooling rate, solidification time, and solidus velocity. Drawbacks of criteria functions include insensitivity to varying hydrogen concentration and the limitation to qualitative predictions. Consequently, in aluminum alloys, attempts have been made to develop models incorporating the effects of hydrogen gas and microstructure evolution. However, these types of models represent a significant increase in complexity and sacrifice the simplicity and ease of application of the thermally based criteria functions."

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. As well, several international studies show that, thanks to the latest production techniques, no environmental hazards need be incurred.RésuméComment doubler la durée des chaussées d'asphalte sans augmenter les budgets de voirie? Very great changes were made in the dimensions of the smelting hearths of the furnaces in the period from about 1800 to 1906, the length increasing from about 11 to 116 ft., and the width from 8 to 19 ft. During this time the tonnage smelted increased from about 9 to 250 tons per 24 hr., and the tons of charge smelted per ton of coal increased from 0.77 to 4.3. Dr. Mathewson3 noted no great difference in the "fuel ratio" (i. e., the amount of charge smelted per ton of coal) as the furnace at Anaconda was increased in length by stages from 85 to 116 ft. (The percentage of copper in the slag, however, was lowered from 0.42 to 0.36 per cent. The other components of the slag were not given.) Lump coal fired on grates was the fuel used during this period. The practice in operating the furnaces over such a length of time naturally varied considerably, and there were differences in composition and nature of the charge, yet it may he considered that the improvements made were due largely to increases in the size of the furnace used. Doubtless some credit should be given to improvements in operating technique, like changes in the methods of firing the lump coal. However, the greater part of the advance was probably due to factors influencing the

Two new inorganic-organic hybrid polymers, Al(OH)3-polyacrylamide (Al(OH)3-PAM) and Mg(OH)2-polyacrylamide (Mg(OH)2-PAM) were synthesized and successfully applied for the treatment of oil sand tailings. The results indicate that both Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM were unaffected by the change in pH, and could be applied to oil sand tailings with varying sand-to-fine ratio (SFR). The optimum dosages for the Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM were about 330 g/ton and 650 g/ton, respectively for SFR 3.75. The flocculated oil sand tailings dewater quickly producing 66-68% solids. The flocculated tailings produced similar filtration rate before and after shear. Mg(OH)2-PAM treated oil sand tailings produced twice the filtration rates (220 ml/min) compared with Al(OH)3-PAM. This study clearly indicates that Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM is a viable solution while decreasing the mass-production of tailings and increasing the rate of water-recycle.

"The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. Some of the changes and their reasons are discussed. INTRODUCTION The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Rreserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The proposed 2016 update is not significantly different from previous versions of the Code. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting. However, reporting may be unclear, ambiguous, selective, obscure, distorted or unintelligible. Part of the purpose of the update is to provide better guidelines to Competent Persons (CPs) to ensure that the material information is being reported and that reporting is transparent in accordance with the guidelines of the Code. The information provided should, as required by the Code, be adequate to inform the “reader/investor or potential investor to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information”. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) highlights the importance of the reporting Codes, as provided from a quote from their website (www.crirsco.com): The mining industry is a vital contributor to national and global economies. It is a truly international business that depends on the trust and confidence of investors and other stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being. Unlike many other industries, it is based on depleting mineral assets, the knowledge of which is important prior to the commencement of extraction. It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the level of trust necessary to underpin its activities."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines Bold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 6/The present report presents analytical data for 1,499 samples, representing the products of approximately 105 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gaso¬line are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for these analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows; Regular-price, 872 samples, 266 items, and 83 brands; -premium-price, 584 samples, 217 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 43 samples, 32 items, and 21 brands. The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted mineral investigations of the Payette Crest-South Fork area in west central Idaho near McCall, Idaho, in 1989. There are no known producing mines or mineral production from the area. Forty-seven samples were taken (stream sediment, rock. and placer); no identified mineral resources were delineated.

The forces acting between a small rod, one end of which was made water repellent, adhering to a much larger air bubble in water were measured. An equation is deduced which correlates these forces and the influence of each force is discussed. The importance of the size of bubbles in a flotation cell is emphasized.

Uranium mining operations commenced at Ranger mine site, Jabiru NT Australia in May 1980. The Ranger orebodies, totalling approximately 110 000 tonnes contained U305 had been indicated by airborne radiometric survey in 1969 and confirmed by drilling the following year. Both diamond and percussion drilling methods were used to define the mineralisation and samples were analysed using a combination of radiometric and neutron activation techniques. Ore reserve estimates were calculated from conventional and geostatistical methods, and following the mining of 15 million tonnes of ore, reconciliations with before mining estimates are well within acceptable industry standards. In-pit grade control employs radiometric techniques including a radiometric truck discriminator built in Australia to mine specification to meet production requirements and improve productivity. Environmental requirements associated with uranium mining are a daily consideration.

This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State's refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State's petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation; (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

"Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. Widespread interest in reopening Victorian gold mines, regenerated by increased gold prices, has highlighted the technical problems prevailing. A combination of historical lease legislation, minimal recent mining activity, forms of mineralisation, high insurance rates and tortuous approval requirements for mining mean the potential investor assessing an old mine must address a wide range of technical problems. The requirements for establishment of ore reserves and attraction of capital for mine development are fundamental. Underground reef mining was historically generally on a small scale, and as mining on many fields ceased about the turn of the century, past geological and production records cannot be correlated to personal experience and comment. The impact of modern mining technology on future reef mining will be to reduce operating costs and significantly improve historic metallurgical recovery. Roth these are commensurate with increased capital costs. Workers compensation rates currently applicable in Victoria are many times higher than in other states, adding significantly to operating costs. Establishment of a pilot plant testing facility in central Victoria would provide an invaluable service in treating bulk samples essential for grade and recovery assessments of Victorian ores.
