"Failures of coal ribs are major hazards in underground coal mines. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls were the leading cause of groundfall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to reduce rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines. Numerical models can be used as part of the design methodology provided the models are appropriately calibrated and verified. The paper presents a coal rib model to simulate the mechanism of the coal deformation and fracturing that can lead to stress-driven rib falls. The proposed coal rib model was calibrated against published data from an instrumented rib site at the West Cliff mine in Australia. Fracturing of the coal rib was defined by critical values of shear strain of the coal material and rib displacement. A critical plastic shear strain of 2.8% and a sudden increase of rib displacement of 30 to 45 mm were sufficient to develop a fracture plane in the rib model. Accordingly, a discontinuous rib deformation was achieved and it compared favorably against field monitoring data. INTRODUCTION Coal ribs are the vertical walls of coal formed when entries are developed in a coal bed. Failures of coal ribs are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can contribute indirectly to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the last 18 years, there has been a continual occurrence of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines due to rib falls. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls (excluding longwall face and bursts) were the leading cause of ground fall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities [1]. Despite the threat of rib falls, the amount of rib falls and rib support research conducted in the U.S. is limited compared with what has been done in pillar and roof support design. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to minimize the number of rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines."

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.

The extraction of nickel and cobalt from low-grade greek laterites by sulfuric acid leaching has been studied. Batch and continuous mini-plant atmospheric leaching as well as pressure leaching techniques were employed. Atmospheric leaching at temperatures as high as 95 OC generally resulted in low Ni extractions (up to 82%), high acid consumption (650-850 kg/t ore or 80-100 kg/kg Ni) and high Fe co-dissolution (30%). Pressure leaching at 260 OC increased Ni extraction to over 98%, with minimal Fe co-dissolution (2.5%); acid consumption was 300 kg/t ore (31 kg/kg Ni). Detailed experimental results and conceptual flow sheets for atmospheric and pressure leaching are presented.

On March 20, 2014, the ?Roundtable Discussion on Innovations in Heap Leaching and Mine Waste Management? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. at the Red Lion Hotel in Elko, NV. This topic is timely, and formed something of a lead into the inaugural ?Workshop on Innovations in Waste Rock, Tails and Heap Leach Management.? That workshop, which grew from the 2013 Elko Roundtable, was held on the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus on May 19, 2014. The workshop was hosted by UNR and the University of British Columbia. Knight Piésold?s local representatives, Bryan Ulrich and Logan Jensen, were joined by Tom Kerr, president of Knight Piésold?s, U.S. practice; Rick Frechette, senior vice president, environmental services and Jeff Coffin, geotechnical engineer, from the Denver, CO office for the roundtable event. The event played host to about two dozen attendees from several western states.

The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity concentrator capable of separating fine minerals and/or minerals with relatively small differences in specific gravity. Since the first commercial installation at the Renison Bell tin mine in Australia, development and improvement in hardware has continued, including the introduction of the high-capacity J1800model Kelsey Jig. The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.

The objective of the paper was application of bacterial leaching on two brown coal samples from locality Mine Druzba, seams Antonin and Josef (Sokolov brown coal basin, Czech republic). Based on the results of bacterial leaching and petrologic analyses of the given samples, it is possible to say that application of bacterial leaching gived good results. Applying bacterial leaching it is possible to remove from 34% to 47% of total sulphur and from 45% to 64% of pyritic sulphur from the coal.

Spontaneous combustion presents a very serious hazard to both safety and economics of mining operations. Notwithstanding considerable research that has been done over the years to present and control spontaneous combustion the risk still exists. Consequently, this problem poses a major challenge to mine safety researchers; new and improved techniques are constantly being developed to deal with this major hazard. This paper reviews the current practices to prevent and control spontaneous combustion in coal mine operations highlighting new developments in this area. Research and development work presently being carried out in Canada to' deal with this problem is also discussed which includes monitoring, inertization and application of biotechnology.

"A major challenge of contemporary exploration geochemistry is the development of procedures that can locate blind mineralization or mineralization that sub-crops below a cover of transported overburden, the composition of which bears no relation to the underlying mineralization. Over the past few years, the possible existence of diagnostic geochemical features in the country rock associated with volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits has attracted increasing attention both on the local mine scale and on the regional scale. In the present investigation, the nature of the geochemistry of a number of Archean greenstone belts of the Canadian Shield is examined to determine the feasibility of distinguishing productive from non-productive areas of copper-zinc mineralization. The results indicate that productive areas are distinguishable from non-productive areas providing consideration is given to the effects of igneous differentiation on rock compositionIntroductionArchean massive sulphide deposits are an important source of copper and zinc, and to a lesser extent silver and gold, particularly in Canada. As in the case of most other forms of mineralization, there is a continual need to develop new techniques that will improve the chances of success in the search for these deposits. The majority of Archean areas in the northern latitudes are overlain by a variable cover of glacial overburden. Considerable progress has been made in the development of new geochemical exploration techniques for use in glaciated terrain, based on the detection of anomalous dispersion in the glacial overburden. In certain situations, however, as in the search for blind deposits or in areas covered by glaciolacustrine deposits, overburden geochemistry offers little hope for success. In the case of massive sulphide deposits, one possible solution may lie in the detection of anomalous geochemical signatures in the bedrock. Recognizing this possibility, attention has been directed to the investigation of the nature of lithogeochemical dispersion associated with massive sulphide deposits on both regional and local scales, to establish the potential of lithogeochemistry as an aid in the search for these deposits."

This Bureau of Mines publication comprises 19 tables of data concerning domestic barite production and consumption, imports, and world production for the years 1880 to 1976. Barite is vital to the petroleum industry, with 90 percent of domestic consumption used in drilling muds. Domestic production has traditionally fallen short of consumption: in 1976, 41 percent of the 2.2 million tons consumed was imported. World production of barite increased from 269,000 tons in 1923 to 5.2 million tons in 1975 but is in danger of falling short of future demand. The compiled data provide a comprehensive base of information.

The ternary Ni2MnGa intermetallic compound is an intelligent material which has both a ferromagnetic property and a shape memory effect (SME). The use of the shape memory alloy films for an actuator of micro-machines is very attractive because of its large recovery force. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of fabrication conditions and to clarify the relationships between these properties and fabrication conditions of the Ni-Mn-Ga films. The Ni-Mn-Ga films with a thickness of nearly 5 um were deposited with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using a Ni50Mn25Ga25 or Ni52Mn24Ga24 target. They were heat-treated at various temperatures between 873 and 1273 K for homogenization and ordering and then cooled in a furnace. The composition of the films depended on the sputtering power. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains. After the heat treatment the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with the increasing heat treatment temperature. The martensitic transformation temperature of the heat-treated films increased with increasing nickel content. Furthermore the effect of plastic deformation and constraint aging on SME is also investigated. After plastic deformation, the two-way SME was shown through the martensitie transformation and its reversion, The intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks from stress-induced martensitie phase was found. The constraint-aged films also showed the two-way 3ME by thermal cycling.

The highest current density suitable for the electrowinning process is between 50 to 60 % of its limiting current density. One of the most important influences on the limiting current density is the thickness of the hydrodynamic boundary layer near the electrode surface. Therefore, the fluid flow in a copper electrowinning cell is calculated. The numerical simulation - using the CFD-software package FIRE® - considers all three different types of the fluid flow, namely, the natural convection, the forced convection by electrolyte circulation and the forced convection by electrochemically induced gas stirring. The simulation of natural convection is based on the different density values in the boundary layer at the electrode surface given by a density/concentration correlation. The copper concentration - linked with the current density by Faraday law - is solved by an additional transport equation. The simulation of the forced convection by the electrochemically-induced gas stirring is done by using a real two-phase calculation. That means that all differential equations are solved again for the second phase. The numerical solution of the fluid flow field is compared with the results of LDA- measurements, which were done in a special cell. The software for the LDA enabled a calculation of the void fraction possible and therefore a rough estimate of the mass transfer coefficient through the prevailing gas bubble induced convection can be made by assuming the influence of relative bubble volume.

THE manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace having been the subject of considerable attention in the Institute, I beg to put on record a contribution to the discussion from a quarter hitherto not directly represented, namely, the St. Louis furnaces, near Marseilles in France, belonging to a company of which M. Jordan, a member of the Institute, is Managing Director. These furnaces commenced in 1862 to manufacture specular pig (fontes à facettes) containing from three to six per cent. of manganese. In 1864 the regular production of spiegeleisen (fontes miroitantes), containing seven to ten per cent, of manganese, was inaugurated. At that time the Rhine was the only locality of this manufacture, and the Bessemer works of England and France obtained from Germany all their spiegel. From 1864 to the present time, the St. Louis furnaces have been advancing steadily the percentage of manganese in their product. From ferromanganese of thirty per cent. they had arrived, about two years ago, at a product containing seventy to seventy-five per cent., and for some time past they have been turning out what, as M. Jordan remarks, may fairly be termed fonte de manganese, or manganese pig, instead of iron, since the percentage of iron it contains is not more than 8.5, while the percentage of manganese is 85, or ten times as great. This very high grade material has a peculiar appearance, entirely different from that of ordinary cast iron or spiegel. It is granular, and steely gray in color. Much of the process control effort in the mineral industry uses proportional-integral-derivative controllers that require periodic retuning. Retuning hundreds of controllers typically employed in a single plant is a formidable task for the control engineer. Adaptive controllers offer an alternative to this problem, since they are designed to tune themselves. Four schemes of adaptive control-gain scheduling, model reference adaptive control, self-tuning regulator, and optimal adaptive controllers-are discussed with process examples. The control of a ball mill circuit with a multivariable self-tuning regulator is illustrated. This controller encompasses the advantages of the other three controllers and is applicable for a wide range of process variability.

The ISASMELT process is making a significant contribution to the global metals industry. ISASMELT furnaces are now operating successfully in eight different countries and treating approximately 3 million tonnes of concentrates and secondary materials per year. The process is currently used in both lead and copper smelting. The most recently commissioned plants were in Germany and China, one for treating scrap copper and the other treating low-grade copper concentrates. The Copper ISASMEL T furnace ("CIF") at Mount Isa Mines Limited (UMIM") has continued to set new operational records, with throughput of more than I million tonnes of concentrate per year and very low operating costs. This paper summarises the latest operational data from the Mount Isa Copper ISASMEL T plant and outlines the successful approach to industrial R&D taken by MIM in the development of the ISASMEL T process.

The release of these data would benefit the mining industry as a whole. Particularly valuable would be the details of drilling programs that have been tested by actual mining operations, as most of the available published material is unsupported by production records. The scope of this paper is limited to a few of the commonest problems of interpreting diamond-drill core and sludge samples and the deviation of holes. It does not include the description of routine operations performed by the drillers, nor the estimation of ore reserves. The methods of calculating reserves have been described 25,26,31,32.50,65 but more information is needed on the results shown by actual mining operations. CORE SAMPLING The accuracy of diamond-drill-hole sampling depends in large measure on the percentage of core recovery. As a general rule, the longer the run, the poorer is the recovery. Although the longer runs allow cheaper drilling costs, the determining factor should be the percentage of recovery desired. The problem is one of balancing accuracy against costs. Holes of larger diameter may show improved recovery, except as Joralemon* points out that there are some conditions in which small holes give better core recovery than large holes. This is particularly true, he says, in rocks like shattered quartzite, where larger core tends to break in angular fragments and grind up, while the diameter of smaller core is less than the distance between joint planes and grinding is not so serious. In a large measure the length of the sample run should depend on the type of deposit. Favorable drilling may allow uniform sample runs of 5 ft., 10 ft., or perhaps 20 ft. In veins or beds of relatively narrow widths and changing characteristics, however, the ore zone may be overrun and ground in a core barrel full of waste rock. Generally it is desirable to break the sample at a change in the rock or ore. Such a change, often indicated by a color change in the sludge water, should be a signal for the driller to make a "dry" block and to pull out that run regardless of the length.
