During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor's assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. Compared with Cobalt or Cripple Creek, Bisbee didn't seem unattractive. The main street, with one or two-storied stores and saloons, followed the bottom of the canyon with high steep hills on both sides. Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The standard pump thus became a 10 stage 1,500 rpm pump with a capacity of approximately 2 million gallons per 24 hours against a static head that varied

Thls report summarizes work done under Bureau of Mines contract H0357100, "Development of a Crimp Connector for Trailing Cable Splices." The purpose of this effort was to establish optimum connector design conditions to meet flex cycle, pullout and electrical resistance criteria on phase power conductors. Field testing of "optimum design" connectors is briefly discussed. One of the primary objectives of contract H0357100 was to enable one to design better performing phase conductor connectors. Illustrating the practical significance of this 1s a discussion on the development of a new splice kit for trailing cables. The connectors in this kit were designed in accordance with the design methods described in the contract final report. Kit components, test data, and a connector installation tool are also discussed. The successful effort on the phase connector has resulted in contract H0377042, entitled "Design and Testing of Joining Sleeves for Trailing Cable Ground and Pilot Wires." The purpose of this contract (currently in effect) is to improve ground-conductor and pilot-wire performance. Significant findings to date are discussed.

IN dealing with segregation in babbitt, and its effect on the final cast structure, which is a bearing, it is obviously impossible to cover all of the compositions manufactured. Each composition, of course, will exhibit certain specific types of segregation. However, as examples,, two compositions of babbitt are presented: one a tin-base of well-known analysis and the other a lead-base, which in the past few years has found wide usage. Bearings usually are cast either statically or centrifugally; therefore the effect of these two methods on segregation is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A slab of babbitt 1/2 in. thick by 5 in. wide and 17 in. long was cast, using a book mold with the long edge vertical. An A.S.T.M. grade 2 babbitt was used (3.5 per cent copper, 7.5 per cent antimony, remainder tin), to which 0.10 per cent tellurium had been added. Unfortunately, no metal without tellurium was available. The mold to hold the babbitt was heated to approximately 300°F., the temperature being judged by the babbitter. The pouring temperature of the babbitt was 875°F. (470°C.). One slab was made by allowing the babbitt to cool without stirring. The other slab was stirred during the entire cooling cycle. This stirring consisted of a vigorous churning or puddling into the mold until complete solidification had taken place. Three samples were removed from these slabs. One was taken at the extreme bottom, another half way to the top, and another at the extreme top, all at the center of the width. Chemical, macroscopic and microscopic examination was made of all samples. Table I shows the chemical analyses obtained at the described positions [ ] in the slab. The analyses show no serious amount of gravity segregation. Microscopic examination from edge to edge of the slab showed little change in structure. From top to bottom there was a progressive coarsening of the grain size in the stirred slab but little change in the slab that was not stirred (Fig. I). No definite exhibit of segregation could be detected. In line with our experimental study on the tin-base babbitts, we cast an almost duplicate slab using A.S.T.M. Alloy No. 15, containing 0.9 to 1.25 per cent tin, 14.75 to 15.5. per cent antimony, 0.80 to 1.25 per cent arsenic and 0.4 per cent copper. The slab was 16 in. long and 3/8 in. thick, cast with the long side vertical. One slab was allowed to cool normally and the other was stirred continually during cooling. It was recently reported' that the initial transformation in (100) iron whiskers grown in the bcc condition can be nucleated on heating in regions of the whisker which are not necessarily the hottest. Although this behavior was observed1 several times, its sporadic nature precluded any documentation other than occasional visual observations during hot-stage optical-microscope heating experiments. The purpose of this communication is to report how, in one instance, the a-y transformation in such a (100) iron whisker was initiated in a region which was clearly at a lower temperature than an adjacent region which did not transform at all.

A study of the effect of rock composition, rock structure and degree of weathering on the stability of cut slopes is being sponsored jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and the North Carolina Highway Commission. In 58 mountain and piedmont counties of North Carolina the percentage of failed cut slopes is greatest in micaceous metasediments, gneisses, and schists, and in saprolite and soil derived from these rock types. Soil slope failures outnumber rock slope failures by two to one. Joints and similar planes of separation exert a strong influence on size and shape of the sliding mass. They may or may not act as failure surfaces, depending on their orientation with respect to the active forces. Climatological data, though indicative of weathering conditions, do not correlate well with slope failure frequency. Because of the presence of joints and similar planes of weakness in soil and rock materials, conventional methods for analyzing slope stabilities are not directly applicable. Empirically derived modifications of these methods are being investigated. A study of the stability of highway cut slopes, sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads and the North Carolina State Highway Commission, began in 1962 at North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. As part of this study all slides, rockfalls and other types of cut slope failures on Federal and State highways in the 58 mountain and piedmont counties in North Carolina were located and described, and the data catalogued in a punched card file system. A major objective of the project is to relate slope failures to properties and physical conditions of the geological units in which the slopes were constructed, and to correlate soil type and/or geological unit with type and frequency of slope failure. The complexities of the problem of slope stability and the limitations which these complexities impose on methods for analyzing slopes have been recognized for many years. A great variety of factors and processes may lead to slides, often making it almost impossible to analyze theoretically the conditions required for stability of slopes. One of the principal factors determining maximum safe slopes is the shear strength of the material in which the slopes are cut, but unfortunately there are very few data available concerning shear strengths of residual soils. Vargasl tested clay derived from gneiss and granite in southern Brazil; the properties of decomposed granite occurring near Hong Kong were determined by Lumb.2 These data are being used, when applicable, to supplement the test data obtained in the present study by Yorke.3 The locations of the North Carolina slope failures, more than 400 in number, are shown on Fig. 1. This map, adapted from the Geological Map of North Carolina,4 suggests the possibility of a relationship between frequency of slide occurrence and rock type. However, the evaluation of this possibility requires consideration not only of the type of rock, but also of its large and small scale structural features, its susceptibility to and degree of weathering, and the composition and structure of the weathering products. Soil slope failures in thoroughly weathered soil material and saprolite outnumber rock slope failures two to one. INFLUENCE OF ROCK TYPE The agricultural soil type involved in each soil slope failure was identified and each failure was catalogued in terms of the parent material from which the soil was derived. These data indicate that most of the slope failures, whether in the rock or in the derived soil, are associated with metamorphic rocks (see Fig. 2a). The data may be skewed somewhat because of the relative sizes of the total areas underlain by the various rock types, but Leith and Gupton5 have demonstrated that the preponderance of failures in metamorphic rocks is of much greater magnitude than could be accounted for by the areal factor alone. The dominance of metamorphic rocks is emphasized when soil slope failures are considered in terms of the specific rock types from which the soils were derived (see Fig. 2b). Recent start-up of the Pinto Valley mine and mill is expected to add to domestic copper mine capacity by some 62,500 tpy. Owned and operated by Cities Service Co.'s Miami Operations, the complex lies approximately 5% miles west of Miami, Ariz. The estimated $100- million project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken by Cities Service, includes the Pinto Valley open pit mine, a 40,000-tpd concentrator, and a 10-mile slurry pipeline that will transport a 28% copper concentrate slurry to a new filter plant located in Miami. Concentrate will be treated nearby at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s new smelter complex. The current pit design contains reserves of approximately 350 million tons of ore averaging 0.44% Cu. Based on an initial production target of 40,000 tpd ore and 60,000 tpd waste, mine life is estimated at 24 years. The current stripping ratio is 1.5: 1, requiring the ultimate removal of more than 500 million tons of waste and leach-grade material.

A new sensor based sorting system has been developed, based on complex image analysis, where an image texture and a shape pattern is considered for identifying particles for separation. The sorting system employs different images generated by visual light and X-ray to provide maximal information about processed particles. Application of X-ray makes it possible to analyse the internal structure of the particles, which provides a 2D image with complicated texture, however, which contains valuable information. The advanced system for the texture and the pattern recognition is applied to analyse these images simultaneously, to provide the required identification of the particles for efficient separation. The mathematical models applied during identification and separation, are assisted by high speed calculations being specially optimised for this kind of process. This allows sorting with high capacity and high accuracy, which is critical for practical applications in mineral processing. The paper describes a number of tests during sorting of iron ore and coal with high separation efficiency.

Many mines adopt necessarily conservative backfilling strategies due to a lack of understanding of their backfill behaviour. In the past five years, extensive instrumentation campaigns have focused on measuring in-situ cemented paste backfill behaviour. These tests have resulted in optimised backfilling efficiency through elimination or reduction of cure periods where; i) controls on backfill behaviour are understood, and ii) barricade pressures are demonstrated to be within a safe range using routine monitoring as a required QA/QC procedure. Recently, this work has been extended to consider hydraulic backfill operations. Two stopes have been instrumented at Vale?s Coleman and Garson Ramp mines. The instrumentation and deployment methods are discussed, and representative total earth pressure, pore pressure, and temperature data are presented. In one case, pressures in the stope are relatively low as drainage causes strength gain in the fill and so pressures are arched. In a second example, again, drainage causes strength gain in the fill, but increasing temperatures correlate with pressure increases even during downtimes in filling. These pressure increases are thought to be caused by thermal expansion of the backfill in confined locations. Generally, the instrumentation approach has proven successful in measuring hydraulic backfill behaviour and offers good potential for incorporation into a procedure to safely maximise backfilling efficiency through routine barricade pressure monitoring, when combined with safeguards to ensure adequate fill drainage.

"One million seven-hundred thousand cubic yards of deep mixing were installed to support an elevation raise of an earthen levee known as LPV 111, which is located in east New Orleans. The deep mixing was done by two contractors using somewhat different technologies, but producing elements of the same size. As part of the quality control and quality assurance program, 507 deep-mixed elements were cored and 5,082 specimens were strength tested in unconfined compression. This paper presents data from the coring and testing program. Very high percentages of the core run lengths were recovered, except during one period for one mixing technology. The coring methods are described, and reasons for the isolated episode of low recovery are discussed. The strength data show that the specification acceptance criteria were satisfied. Statistical parameters of the strength data are provided, and trends between strength and the following factors are discussed: depth, soil type, binder factor, and project-specific experience. Photographs of longitudinal cuts of core specimens are presented. Important lessons learned from this unusually large project are described.INTRODUCTIONThe Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection system included a project known as LPV 111, which is an approximately 5-mile long segment of levee and floodwall located in east New Orleans along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent to Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (Cali et al. 2012). The majority of the project consisted of a raise of an existing earthen levee from an existing crest elevation of about 18 ft to a new crest elevation of about 28 ft. The underlying soils were weak and compressible, providing inadequate support for the raised levee. Ground improvement in the form of deep mixing was selected to provide the necessary stability and settlement control for the raised levee.The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, was the governmental agency in responsible charge of the project, including approval of design, construction, and payment. The lead designer was URS Corporation, and the general contractor was Archer-Western-Alberici (AWA), working in alliance with TREVIICOS South (Trevi), who, together with Fudo Construction (Fudo), performed the deep mixing.As part of the quality control and quality assurance program, over 500 production deep-mixed elements were cored, the cores were carefully logged, and over 5,000 unconfined compression tests were performed. In addition, selected specimens were carefully photographed before and after longitudinal saw cuts to expose the interior of the specimens. This paper provides a summary of the coring and testing performed on the production deep-mixed elements."

Consider a set of points, some of which are anomalous (larger than a specified cutoff value), located on a plane. Whether some or all of these points are clustered to form one anomaly or more or, alternatively whether these points are scattered at random, may be investigated by measuring perimeters of convex hulls. A convex hull is the smallest convex polygon that will encompass a group of points. (Examples of convex polygons are triangles, rectangles, and all other regular polygons.) A set of anomalous points is selected and the perimeters of the convex hulls of this set and all its subsets are measured and compared with tabulated values of perimeters for each subset size. For a given subset size consider those perimeters which are less than the tabulated perimeter. If the number of convex hulls is greater than the maximum number expected by chance, then the chance that any one of the observed-hulls-is a nonrandom cluster is the ratio of the observed number to the sum of the observed and the maximum number expected by chance. Otherwise, the points are evidently not clustered. If many sample points are anomalous, an alternate model defines various configurations of contiguous points and compares the observed number of configurations per unit area with the expected number. Applications are discussed in several fields of geology and geochemistry-including geochemical exploration surveys and heavy mineral spatial distributions--as well as in mining (dust control) and medical geography.

IN the latter part of the year 1943, it was decided to experiment with diamond-drill blast holes in the Old Bed magnetite mine at the Mineville mines of the Republic Steel Corporation, in sections of the ore body where vertical dimensions were large and where development for sublevel bench stopes had already been done. Other possibilities of application for this drilling method were in the reclamation of old floors and pillars in the pitching folds of the Lower Old Bed ore body and in the reclamation of large vertical pillars in the " 21 " Bonanza-Joker ore body. The cross sections and views of the two ore bodies will show the conditions to which the diamond-drill method has been applied. The Lower Old Bed magnetite ore body is lenticular and dips approximately 30° toward the southwest and strikes generally southeast and northwest. An intensely folded structure, which pitches generally on an axis approximately at right angles to the strike, is continuous from the uppermost old workings down to the present bottom of the mine, and probably continues with depth. On successively lower levels this folded structure becomes greater in vertical dimensions and the two folds are closer together in a horizontal dimension. As shown in Fig. 1, this folded structure gives to parts of the ore body considerable vertical dimensions, which provide areas that were developed for sublevel bench stoping above a slushing drift, as shown in Fig. 2. It was in one of these previously developed sublevel bench stopes, No. 26 on the 1185-ft. level, that the diamond-drill blast-hole method was applied for mining the upper sublevel. The lower sublevel was underhand-bench-drilled to the finger raises of the scram drift below. The roof of this stoping area began to break and spall on the lower sublevel, causing the roof to become inclined. Along the hanging wall of the stope this reached an elevation about half way between the two sublevels. A smooth schistose seam in the hanging wall causes the ore to break away freely. Therefore, if bench mining had been carried on in the upper sublevel, a dangerous condition of poorly supported benches would have resulted. When the drillers were slashing across the sublevel to footwall and hanging wall to make a bench, spalling roof of the opening below would probably have carried away part of the bench, and would have left a dangerous place in which to continue underhand benching. A 6 by 8-ft. raise had been driven between the lower stope and the upper sublevel about 200 ft. from a manway. It was decided to use this raise for a starting cut and to arrange holes as shown in Fig. 3, so that a slot would be opened across the ore body between the footwall and hanging wall. This slot would then be used for the purpose of breaking into the ore; by blasting vertical rings of holes drilled at right angles to the axis of the pitching folds as nearly as possible. A rock mechanics instrumentation and monitoring program was implemented during pillar extraction at Gulf Mineral Resources' Mt. Taylor Mine, the deepest uranium mine in the U.S. Three types of monitoring were employed: (1) drift convergence around stopes (using a portable tube extensometer), (2) stress changes in pillars (using vibrating wire stressmeters in horizontal boreholes), and (3) load changes in haulageways under stopes (using vibrating wire load cells in jack stands). Results include convergence-time graphs, convergence contour maps, stress-time graphs, a stress increase contour map, load-time graphs, and abutment load limit maps. Major factors influencing results include (1) size of pillars around the extraction area, and (2) presence and orientation of a major fault adjacent to one extraction area. These factors, combined with pillar extraction, produced evidence of load transfer over 120 m from a stope measuring only 55 m x 45 m. Vertical stress increases of 7 to 17 MPa (1000 to 2500 psi) within 60 m of the stope were obtained using the stress- meter manufacturer's method. The fault apparently prevented load transfer in the down-dip direction but increased load transfer in the up-dip direction. Convergence rates of up to 1.3 cm/day (0.5 in/day) were measured at two stations. Instruments were generally reliable despite adverse underground conditions. The instrumentation and monitoring program at Mt. Taylor provided a warning system against ground control problems and a characterization of ground behavior for future development and extraction of pillars. Recommendations are made for future mining and instrumentation practices.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. The Ellalong Colliery has been the first to mine the Greta Seam using the longwall method. Analysis of data from geotechnical monitoring has pointed to the role of the strong, massive sandstones of the Branxton formation in the development of loads on the powered supports and pillars. Failure of the sandstone intermediate-roof has been related to first-weight and periodic weighting, measured on the supports, using simple "voussior" analysis. Stress changes, including triaxial components measured in the barrier and chain pillars, have been compared with 2- and 3- dimensional numerical models. The applicable range of the models for the prediction of pillar loads under the strong roof is discussed.

Current research by the US Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/nonmetal mines is described. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, m situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.
