The ancit-process of the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein, an affiliate Company of ARBED S.A., Luxembourg, was developed in its principles by the Dutch State Mines, Limburg, in the mid-50's with the aim of producing a smokeless domestic fuel on the basis of low volatile hard coal. In 1967, the EBV erected a 10 t/h large- size pilot plant along these principles in the Aachen mining district and further developed the acquired know-how. In hardly 10 years more than 650 000 t of ancit briquettes with unit weights between 17 and 100 grams were produced and in the meantime stream rates of over 85 % of the yearly utilization hours have been reached. In more than 10 blast furnace trial runs involving substitution rates up to 100 p. c. ancit have proved the suitability of ancit as a metallurgical fuel both for a burden with a high and a poor iron content. Construction work for a minor process-step to enable processing of coal with a higher content of volatile matters is finished and first results are expected by summer this year. A pilot plant with a 30 t/h capacity working on a low-volatile coal basis is being planned. Engineering and construction are supervised by MecanARBED. Luxembourg, as responsible contractors.

The current status of metal hydride alloys for NiMH batteries was systematically reviewed. Extensive application-oriented research and development has successfully made the NiMH battery an important part, with growing potential, among rechargeable batteries. The rare earth based metal hydrides (AB5) have been considered the best alloy material for use in the negative electrode in NiMH batteries. However, being in demand for high performance electronic markets, the still young NiMH industry is facing serious technical challenges in developing better products. Among all the efforts to respond to the challenges, advanced AF3, alloys are in great demand: the capacity enhancement race requires new or improved alloys possessing higher volumetric capacity; price competition mandates MH materials with low cost; high performance under severe service environments calls for alloys with high corrosion resistance when subjected to electrochemical cycling; and finally, high power service requires the negative electrode to deliver current at high rates.

A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

Steel consumption forms a significant part of the operating cost of a minerals processing plant. An estimated 250 kt (276, 000 tons) of steel in the US and over 500 kt (551, 000 tons) worldwide are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. The depletion of ore grades and the need for finer grinding of abrasive ores are expected to increase steel consumption even more. Through continued research and development by the mining industry and the suppliers of steel products, several methods to reduce steel consumption have evolved. This paper critically reviews the mechanisms involved in steel wear and the currently available methods, materials. and operating conditions for reducing steel consumption. Particular attention is given to liner design modifications and substitution of rubber liners for steel liners.

But, have you considered the importance of, and the risks associated with the calibration of your seismograph and the accuracy that is p rovided? Can your calibration pro v i d e r back you up in times of trouble and provide documented evidence that the equipment was functioning within specification? Can their calibration pro c e d u res withstand independent scrutiny and be shown to be traceable to a National Standards for accuracy of measurement? These are important documents that in court provide tremendous support that blasting and monitoring activities are conducted professionally and competently.

IT has been reported that the Ti-8 pct A1 alloy is ductile as water quenched from 800°C but brittle as annealed at 650 °C." The present, somewhat limited, investigation was undertaken to discover the cause of the embrittlement. In order to evaluate to some extent the continuity of the embrittling phenomenon, alloys of 6, 8, and 10 pct A1 were studied. Subsequent to the completion of most of this work, Ence and Margolin reported that a Ti,A1 phase exists and that two or more unidentified compounds may exist in the Ti-A1 system.' Materials, Equipment, and Techniques The alloys were prepared using Kroll process sponge of 124 Bhn hardness. In addition, some 8 pct A1 material was made with iodide titanium. The sponge-base alloys were prepared as melts of 4 lb or more by double arc melting. The iodide Ti-8 pct A1 alloy was prepared as 200-g buttons. The alloys were forged at temperatures of 980" to 1150°C. Results of chemical analyses are given in Table I. A Baldwin-Southwark 60,000-lb capacity tensile machine, equipped with an autographic stress-strain recorder, was used for the tensile tests. Standard tensile test specimens, 0.252 in. diam, were used. Standard Charwy V-notch impact specimens were tested using a -kiehle machine. specimens were sealed in evacuated Vycor bulbs for heat treatment. Powder samples for Debye-Sherrer anal- ysis were prepared by filing and screening through 325 mesh. "Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metal-contaminated leachate generated when pyrite-bearing rocks are exposed to surface oxidizing conditions, is a serious environmental problem encountered after the closure of mines and mineral processing operations. In this study, we investigated the effects of soluble phases and metallic oxides, which are commonly found in strongly weathered pyritic wastes, on pyrite oxidation. Strongly weathered pyrite containing melanterite (FeSO4·7H2O) as the main soluble phase was obtained from Furikusa mine, Japan. The sample was washed using two methods to vary the relative amounts of melanterite in the sample. The effect of metallic oxides on pyrite oxidation was evaluated using ultrapure hematite suspensions. Our results showed that under acidic conditions, the effect of soluble salts on the oxidation of pyrite was stronger than hematite. More thorough washing of the sample resulted in the formation of an arsenic-bearing iron-oxyhydroxysulfate coating that minimized pyrite dissolution. This oxidized layer became relatively thicker and mechanically stronger when hematite was introduced after the more thorough removal of soluble salts. Characterization of this “coating” coupled with geochemical modeling suggest that it is most probably composed of two materials: schwertmannite and scorodite. Based on these results, a new approach to suppress pyrite oxidation by directly using iron-oxyhydroxysulfate as coating material is introduced.INTRODUCTION Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metals-contaminated leachate produced in closed/abandoned mine sites (Evangelou, 1995), mineral processing and coal cleaning tailings (Evangelou, 1995), and tunnel construction waste rocks (Tabelin and Igarashi, 2009, Tabelin et al., 2012), is one of the oldest and probably the most serious environmental problem of anthropogenic origin. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private investment arm of the World Bank Group (WBG), requires all IFC-financed projects to comply with its environmental and social policies and guidelines. IFC's review process involves an environmental and social assessment and the implementation of an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) that will set forth the necessary actions to bring the operation into compliance. This paper provides an overview of the environmental and social policies and guidelines that apply to mining projects and examines how WBG/IFC policies and guidelines are applied to mining projects in developing countries. In addition, it includes a review of the increased emphasis IFC is giving to social issues over the past several years based on the existing WBG policies. IFC’s process for the environmental and social review of proposed investments is briefly discussed. The paper focuses on how IFC emphasis has shifted from the traditional environmental and impact mitigation analyses of a few years ago to the integrated social and environmental awareness, action (EAP), and implementation programs (social plans) required today. Today, IFC's focus is to promote sustainable development by investing in projects that directly benefit local communities and the environment. Examples of these changes will be highlighted by a review of recent investments located in West Africa. The goalposts have not moved, but the rules of the game have become tougher.

Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

"The problems of sampling particulate materials, and of characterizing the distributions of particle size and composition are reviewed. Requirements for sampling from comminution systems are discussed and a simple formula is presented for estimating the minimum sample size needed. The limitations and errors associated with the techniques available for particle size analysis are evaluated and guidelines are suggested for the selection of appropriate methods. The use of microscopic and macroscopic approaches to the characterization of particle composition are discussed.INTRODUCTIONComminution is a process of particle size reduction in which the goal is to produce a material with a specified particle size distribution from a coarser feed. In mineral processing applications, the product size distribution is often qf secondary importance to the extent to which individual mineral grams can be liberated from one another. However, due to poor understanding of the nature of the liberation process and the lack of reliable procedures for characterizing it, the actual specification is normally in terms of particle size.Particle size distribution can be regarded as the fundamental characteristic of a particulate system. The distributions of particle shape and composition among the various particle sizes present are often sufficient to define the bulk properties and behavior of the system. Description of the distributions of size; shape and composition of the different phases which may exist within individual particles is necessary to complete the picture and is especially important for predicting liberation etc., in comminution processes. It is quite obvious that · the complete characterization of real particulate systems is a formidable, if not .impossible task. Practical characterization procedures should involve ·evaluation of those characteristics which are deemed to be important and which can be measured. In comminution systems, this should ideally include the particle size distribution, the size-by-size distributions of particle composition, and as much information as can be acquired on the internal composition and structure of individual particles. In most cases, of course, we fall far short of even this rather limited goal."

In the Box-Wilson method, the correlation between dependent and independent variables is represented by a polynomial response function, whose constant and coefficients are determined by applying regression analysis to the experimental data collected. The five levels used for each variable consist of a minimum, a maximum and three intermediate values. A study was carried out using Ni-Cu ore from Sudbury, Ontario, in which 15 experiments designed according to the Box-Wilson method were carried out in random order and in duplicate. The two sets of replicate data showed close similarity, with an overall variance of 0.311 for the five parameters studied. The response functions were used to optimise frother dosage, collector concentration and air flow rate and an experiment was then carried out under the optimised conditions; the results agreed closely with those predicted by the response functions

External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of operating mines. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving the focus on safety, sustainable mining, green issues, profitability and productivity. There is a very high emphasis on ‘reducing cost to improve’, lower mining and beneficiation costs by eliminating waste/inefficiencies (reduce people, use less consumables, multiskilling, etc). The internal mining environment is getting tougher to operate in, with the deposits being more difficult to mine, more difficult to manage due to external pressure along with issues associated with maintaining quality, etc.Technological and environmental developments too numerous to mention, mean that cost control models, reduction in human resource numbers, as well as other drastic measures to curtail expenditure and increase profitability have become part of everyday business. The capability to manage the mining environment in a systemic manner has been lacking and this increases the pressure for performance on those individuals operating and managing mines.Working smarter has become crucial to ensure that businesses optimise the use of their resources, become more safety conscious, more productive and remain cost-effective, while recognising the importance of sustainable mining now and in the future. "There is a wide choice of different types of woven filter media for hundreds of different filtration applications. Factors such as type of fiber, synthetic polymers used, weave style, fabric finishes and fabrication techniques all play an important part in selecting the best choice for a specific type of filter and process application. The purpose of this paper is to offer some basic knowledge of these factors and how they can impact the performance of a filter, the life of the media and the overall cost of operation through case studies of actual plant filtration applications.IntroductionThe use of woven filter cloth in liquid/solid separation applications is generally well known. Woven filter cloth, by the nature of the weaving process, offers unique consistency and repeatability when compared to some other filter media such as needled felts, papers, sintered structures and knitted cloth. This unique consistency and repeatability is particularly applicable to woven filter cloth produced using monofilament fibers. These fibers are consistent in shape and form the basis for a woven cloth with predictable pore size and throughput characteristics. Woven filter cloth can be used in most wet filtration applications. Typical examples are the separation of chemical and pharmaceutical solids from process liquors, waste stream solids capture, liquid foods clarification, mining separations, and polymer filtration.EnvironmentOne of the first considerations is the environmental demand of the given process. Though it is tempting to look immediately at the particles in a filtration process, it is often better to consider some of the more basic needs of the system. There are numerous materials available, both synthetic and wire cloth. Each has its own unique set of properties."

This is a preliminary study of the statistical variation of the pressures on a target above a buried explosion. The data were taken at various distances from the charge centerline for three heights of the target above the soil and one charge depth of burial. All tests were conducted in saturated sand. They show that peak pressures and times of peaks are neither repeatable from shot to shot nor rotationally symmetric within a single shot. The peak pressure and time of peak at each location can be represented by cumulative normal distributions. The paper describes the means and standard deviations of these distributions at eight distances from the charge center for each height of target. These are used to determine the change in standard deviation of the distribution with distance from the charge centerline and height of target. The effect of scale on the mean peak pressures and times of peaks and on their standard deviations at a single scaled distance from the centerline of the charge are explored using various charge weights.

GROSSMANN'S method1 for calculating the hardenability of steel from the composition and grain size has gained wide acceptance, and when properly used, has been well proved in practical application, both for estimating the hardenability of known compositions and for selecting compositions to meet known hardenability requirements. The Grossmann method uses as the criterion of hardenability the "ideal critical diameter," DI, which is the size round that will just harden to a structure of 50 per cent martensite at the center when given the theoretically fastest quench, or "ideal quench." The DI can be related to actual quenching practice if the severity of quench is known; or the DI can be correlated with hardenability as determined by the Jominy end-quench method.2 The effect on hardenability of each element present in a steel can be represented by a multiplying factor, the value of which depends on the amount of the element present and the degree of effectiveness of the particular element. (The value of the factor for a given carbon content varies with the grain size.) When the factors for all elements present in a steel have been determined from charts, they are multiplied, and the resultant product is the D, of the steel. The validity of Grossmann's scheme of multiplying factors has been confirmed in a number of other investigations.3 -6 It can be appreciated that a certain desired level of hardenability can be obtained by adding chromium, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium to a base composition containing carbon, manganese, silicon and the usual impurities. Many of the ranges of hardenability used commercially can be obtained by any of the foregoing alloying elements used singly in the base composition. The same hardenability levels also can be obtained through use of any of a great number of multiple element combinations of these alloying elements. In this report a method will be presented for determining what one combination is the most efficient (based on hardenability and cost of added alloy) for a given level of hardenability. It should not be assumed from the emphasis given to hardenability, that hardenability is the only criterion for the selection of an alloy composition. Such properties as the hot-working characteristics, machinability, carburizing characteristics, amount of distortion during quenching and the retention of austenite may be considerations of importance in many applications. However, hardenability is one of the most important properties of an alloy steel and one that must be considered in almost all cases involving heat-treatment by quenching. Therefore, a method for determining the lowest-cost alloy combination should be of considerable value. This paper will describe the large caisson pier foundations for four of the bridges crossing the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area; and will discuss some of the unusual problems encountered during their sinking. Certain settlement phenomena experienced during their service life will also be related: The four bridges in order of their construction: The Huey P. Long Bridge, River Mile 106.1, completed in 1935 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.1, River Mile 96.0, completed in 1958 The Hale Boggs Bridge, River Mile 121.6, completed in 1983 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2, River Mile 96.1, completed in 1988 Each of these bridges employed large open-dredged concrete caissons as foundations for one or more of the river piers, with the smallest being the 65ft by 102ft caissons for Piers I and II of the Huey P. Long Bridge and the largest being the 99ft by 214ft caisson for Pier II of the Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2. The Huey P. Long caissons are founded in a dense fine sand at -170 while all of the other bridge caissons are founded in hard preconsolidated clay at elevations varying from -150 to -185. The Huey P. Long Bridge is currently being widened without increasing the caisson foundations under any of the river piers; and the design reasoning that led to this decision is presented.
