"The metal-matrix-nano-composite (MMNCs) in this research work consists of an A356 alloy matrix reinforced with 1.0 wt. % SiC 50 nm diameter nanoparticles that can be dispersed within the molten alloy matrix via ultrasonic stirring technology (UST) and induction melting and stirring processing. The necessary ultrasonic parameters to achieve the essential cavitation for adequate degassing and refining of the A356 alloy as well as the optimum fluid flow characteristics for uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles into the A356 alloy matrix have been investigated in this study by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling with a magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) model and an UST cavitation model.The MHD model accounts for turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification, electromagnetic field as well as the complex interactions between the solidifying alloy and nanoparticles by using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS Fluent Dense Discrete Phase Model (DDPM) and a particle engulfment and pushing (PEP) model.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix nanocomposites can offer outstanding properties, including low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness, excellent wear resistance and controllable expansion coefficient, which make them attractive for numerous applications in aerospace, automobile, and military industries field (Bozic, 2010, De Cicco, 2009, Elshalakany, 2014, Goh, 2006, Jia, 2013 and 2015, Liu, 2014, Reihani, 2006, and Su, 2010).As shown in literatures (Aki, 1999 and Mussert, 2002), it is highly advantageous to use nano-sized ceramic particles to produce metal matrix nano-composites (MMNCs) since similar ductility and higher strength with the metal matrix can be achieved. Currently, there are several fabrication methods of MMNCs, including mechanical alloying with high energy milling (Chen, 1997) , ball milling (Filho, 2003), nano-sintering (Groza, 1999), spray deposition, electrical plating, sol-gel synthesis, laser deposition, etc. The mixing of nano-sized ceramic particles is normally lengthy, expensive, and energy consuming.Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) has been extensively used in purifying, degassing, and refinement of metallic melt (Jian, 2005, Khalifa, 2008, Eskin, 2002, Xu, 2004, and Meek, 2006) mainly because introducing the ultrasonic energy into a liquid will induce nonlinear effects such as cavitation and acoustic streaming. SiC nanoparticles are widely used as reinforcement particles due to their relatively good thermal and chemical stability. Ultrasonic vibration can improve the wettability between the reinforced nanoparticles and the metal matrix (Lan, 2004, Cao, 2008, and Yan, 2011), which will assist to distribute the nanoparticles more uniformly into the metal matrix. Ultrasonic cavitation in liquids causes high speed liquid jets of up to 1000 km/h. Such jets press liquid at high pressure between the particles and separate them from each other (Hielscher, 2005)."

"Following several months of test work, water leaching in mined-out areas at Stanrock commenced on a production basis in February, 1963. A combination of fast high-pres-sure washing and rewashing of stopes on a predetermined cycle, and the intermittent sprinkling of low-grade heaps, using both fresh water and recirculated acid water, has proved most successful. There was also a correlation of daily sampling data points to a relationship between the leach water grade and the grade of the material being washed, the leaching time and the location along the dip. An increasing tolerance for uranium by the acid-producing bacteria is also indicated. A steady production rate of 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. of u.08 per month is being maintained, with an over-all mine water grade of 0.25 lb. per ton and a pH of 2.3."

In an effort to increase recovery in thick and closely spaced coal seams, the Bureau of Hines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is studying the feasibility of introducing three mining methods-high-face longwall, multi-slice longwall, and longwall caving-in western coal operations. Geology plays a significant role in determining the success of such methods. Some of the factors that will affect development are as follows: (1) thickness and three-dimensional configuration of the seam, (2) cleats, joints, and fractures in the coal and roof rock, (3) roof composition and variability, and (4) coal quality and changes in quality within the seam. Through geologic mapping, the presence of many of these factors is predictable prior to development.

The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

ANDES, lying south of Chuquicamata and north of Braden on the western slope of Chile's cordillera, can best be described as a big well-managed copper-mining enterprise without any peculiarly outstanding features. In point of copper produced, since output started in 1927, it ranks fifth among the Porphyries, being exceeded only by its two Chilean contemporaries and by Utah Copper and Morenci in the United States. Even so, there is little to distinguish it from other properties. It does not have the phenomenally rich ore (better than 2 per cent copper) that characterizes Braden; and it is not in the same class as Chuquicamata whose ore has the excellent tenor of around 1.7 per cent, nor has it Chuqui's immense tonnage of proven ore reserves and potential ore resources. One might say the operations are standard in that there are no basic or radical departures from established practice. A letter from New York supplying me with sundry pertinent facts for which I had asked, makes this comment regarding the answer to one inquiry: "omitted because it is the ordinary equipment found in any well-run mine." The substance of that remark applies generally to the other operations, plants, and facilities. One interesting fact that helps explain this situation should not be overlooked. Until the "new" Morenci in 1942, Andes was the last of the Porphyry copper mines to come into production. It did not do much pioneering because other companies had, of necessity, charted the way in many particulars. Using digital image correlation the evolution of strain and strain at the onset of localisation resulting in a hot tear has been determined for alloys AA6111 and Al¬0.5wt% Cu during solidification. High resolution images of hot tear formation and growth were captured during a constrained bar test that incorporated a glass window above a central hot spot region. The images were analysed using digital image correlation software to measure the evolution of displacement and strain based on tracking the motion of discrete features on the as-cast surface of the sample. Temperature data was also acquired with a thermocouple cast into the sample in close proximity to the hot tear. The interval starting from the point immediately after solidification shrinkage ends (the metal pulls away from the glass) and finishing when the first sign of a crack or hot tear is visible to the eye was used to determine strain data. The minimum strain at which strain localisation occurs was found to be 0.0069 in AA6111 and 0.0021 for A1-0.5%Cu.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

Today's emphasis on the enterprise bargaining process must be seen as an opportunity for organisations to further develop occupational health and safety standards at work. In particular, this shift from a centralised industrial relations system to employer, employee bargaining, presents organisations with an excellent opportunity to develop OH & S at the `shop floor' level. This is despite real difficulties in presenting hard data on the cost benefits. Unfortunately, examination of enterprise agreements ratified by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), show that less than 32 per cent contain provision for occupational health and safety. Those addressing the issues of occupational health and safety have included segments such as: ò rehabilitation activities; ò a new emphasis for workplace occupational health and safety committees; ò formalising procedures related to hazard identification and control; ò the use of personal protective clothing; and ò occupational hygiene and health monitoring issues. For example, an enterprise agreement reached between CIG-Gases and their unions, included clauses which commit employees to attending ten safety meetings and two work place inspections each year, in order for them to receive any further pay rises.

Mr. Neilson was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city. In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company.

THE Kalunite process? for the production of metal-grade alumina from alumina-containing ores is applicable, considered from a general point of view, to any aluminous raw material that can be converted to potassium alum or equivalent normal alum. This result of modern technology has been the subject of a continuous study and development since 1929, on a laboratory and test-plant scale, with initial emphasis on the utilization of alunite as the raw material. The research and developmental program was carried out by the Kalunite Company and its successor, Kalunite, Inc., an affiliate of the Olin Corporation of East Alton, Illinois. The process is now approaching the time for a major test in its history with the completion of construction of a plant having a capacity of zoo tons of alumina per day in Salt Lake City for the conversion of Marysvale, Utah, alunite ores to alumina and potassium sulphate. The Salt Lake Alumina Plant is a Defense Plant Corporation project. PRODUCTION OF ALUMINUM The known existence of alunite deposits, especially in the Marysvale district, furnished the motive for the original inquiry into the utilization of this raw material for aluminum production. The deposits in this region were actively explored during World War I and utilized for the production of potassium sulphate, an essential fertilizer, of which a shortage of monumental proportions then existed. Up to the twentieth century for alunite is a mineral with an ancient history-it was used in Europe and in China as a source of potassium alum. It never had been used successfully in. this country as a source of oxide for reduction to metal. Although the known reserves of this ore, which undoubtedly will be greatly expanded with a commercial outlet for this ore, are recognized to be sufficient for only a part of the present-day needs of aluminum, it has a definite place in the aluminum industry. Academically it points the way for future raw materials. The aluminum industry has undergone a remarkable growth in the past few years as a result of defense and war requirements. Its expansion in many ways has been beyond belief and prediction, both in volume and location. This wartime status of the industry has accelerated the consumption of bauxite to such an extent, that a re-evaluation of the raw material reserves for the future peacetime industry and for eventual wartime reserves is seemingly of concern. The generally accepted picture of bauxite ore reserves in the United States, especially in raw material suitable for treatment by the Bayer process, focuses attention on other possible sources of raw material of metal-grade oxide. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting laboratory-scale research to determine the leaching conditions required with sulfuric acid for extracting base metal from a matte with a copper-to-nicke1 ratio of 6 to 1. The matte (61.2 pct Cu, 9.7 pct Ni, 3.3 pct Fe, 21 pct S, and about 5 oz of precious metals per ton) was prepared from Duluth Complex (Minnesota) ore by smelting a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate. The matte was pre leached at atmospheric pressure to selectively extract 20 pct of the nickel, and the undissolved solids were referred to as the matte residue. Autoclave leaching of the matte residue extracted over 95 pct of the nickel, copper, and iron. The remaining leach residue in the autoclave contained over 100 oz of precious metals per ton. The leaching conditions required were matte grind of greater than 98 pct minus 325 mesh, pulp concentration of 50 g/1, total pressure of 100 psig with oxygen at 150° C or 400 psig with air at 180° C, 50 g/1 H2S04, 700 rpm agitator speed, and 6 hours of leaching time. The leaching time was decreased to 2 hours by increasing the agitator speed to 1,300 rpm. Sulfuric acid concentration greater than 50 g/1 did not appreciably enhance the base metal extraction, but with less acid, residues with higher iron concentrations were obtained. Supersaturation of the liquor was prevented at 150° C by using a 1ixiviant that contained 30 g/l Ni and 20 g/1 Cu.

Iron ores concentration at Russia’s operations is carried out using conventional flow sheets. They comprise the two-four stage grinding followed by one-two stage magnetic separation. This results in the maximum recovery of magnetite to concentrate and the tailings generation. The final concentrate is generated only during the last stage of magnetic separation. Technologically, this flow sheet layout is not effective at recovering the liberated magnetite grains during grinding to the resulting concentrate. Advanced models of magnetic separators do not allow for the selective separation of the tailings and the portion of the resulting iron ore concentrate. Magnetic product which is the ore mixture of the liberated magnetite grains, high grade and low grade intergrowths is directed to the next grinding stage. In this case, regrinding of the liberated magnetite occurs. In addition, the performance of hydrocyclones during classification in closed grinding circuits is poor. Their classification efficiency does not provide the material separation in accordance with the size. In this case, simultaneous separation in accordance with the density occurs. The quartz particles with the size of 300 mm have similar velocity and trajectory like the particles of magnetite with the size of 60 mm. As a result, light and coarser intergrowths report to the overflow and free heavy magnetite grains report to underflow and return to regrinding (“the density effect”). This resulted in a significant increase of a mill circulating load, the decrease in the feed throughput and higher power consumption. In this connection, the development of iron ore concentrate stage recovery with the focus on gradual liberation of the intergrowths is getting much attention. Gravity concentration technique, particularly, spiral separation is effective at solving the problem of stage recovery not only the dump waste product but also high grade magnetite concentrates at the early concentration stages. This can be attributed to a significant difference in magnetite (4.9-5.2 g/cm3) and host minerals (quartz 2.7 g/cm3) densities, which is the principal during gravity concentration. The test work on concentration of various products samples from current operations (the mills discharges, concentrates from various stages of wet magnetic separation and cyclones underflows) was carried out. Spiral separators SV-500 and ShV-500 manufactured by Spirit LLC were used for the test work. High grade iron ore concentrate (69.05% Fe) was generated during primary wet magnetic separation concentrate concentration using a spiral separator. During the concentration of mills discharges the content of iron in the resulting concentrates and middlings of wet magnetic separation II stage was 64.5% and 64.6%, respectively. The recovery of iron to the concentrates of spiral separation was 33.6-42.0%. The studies presented demonstrate that by using spiral separation for iron-bearing ores concentration, you can separate magnetite liberated grains at the early concentration stages, decrease their regrinding and circulating loads in grinding circuits. This process is able to improve the overall recovery and economics of iron ores concentration process.

The Chestatee mine is one of several well known pyrite deposits in Georgia that are reputed to carry appreciable quantities of copper with the ore. The deposit is? in Lumpkin County on the Chestatee River, 6 miles northeast of Dahlonega (fig. 1). Old records and reports indicated the probable existence of an extensive unmined ore body, but the mine is inaccessible at present. The Bureau of Mines, after studying old maps and records, decided to cor8-drill along the strike of the lense beyond the limits of the indicated old workings in an attempt to extend the possible reserves. The advantageous location of the property indicates that it could become an economic source of pyrite to be used for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Iron sinter resulting from the roasting of the ores could be sold at a premium in the Birmingham, Ala., area, and the copper content could be extracted to help replace the nation's depleted resources of this metal.

Operating and research personnel at U.S. Steel's Pilotac concentrator have evolved specifications for magnetic separators suitable for use in beneficiation of Mesabi magnetic taconite. These specifications were developed as a result of investigations into the operating and metallurgical problems at the Pilotac concentrator over a period of some ten years. This paper discusses primary magnetic separator specifications, but much of the information is also pertinent to secondary and tertiary magnetic separators. Of particular significance is the proposal of a new basis for specifying the magnetic field which includes consideration of both field strength and field gradient. Other areas of discussion include flowsheet service, operating conditions such as drum speed and pulp level, tank configuration, magnet strength including field gradient, sleeve bearing design, designation of corrosion resistant materials and other details that result in a metallurgically efficient machine that has low repair and maintenance requirements. The mechanical and metallurgical design of magnetic separators at the Pilotac plant, Minnesota Ore Operations, United States Steel Corp. has progressed from the original single-stage, belt-type machines to the present multiple-stage, drum-type units, In ten years of operation, the plant operating and research personnel, in consultation with manufacturers, have made design changes to improve mechanical, electrical and magnetic features to meet process needs as flowsheet designs developed and to incorporate new permanent magnet materials as they became available. Separator specifications were an end result of this effort. The latest specifications which were developed for the Minnesota Ore Operations' plant were not all-inclusive listings; they covered only those points indicated by plant experience. For example, magnet pole piece design and dimensions were not stated. The manufacturers were given freedom to use any design as long as the field pattern was as specified. The selection of the items to be included in the specifications was undoubtedly influenced by particular conditions at Pilotac such as composition of plant water, concentration characteristics of the ore, repair and maintenance facilities available and the research programs that had been conducted. Only the developments leading to the specifications for a primary or "cobber" magnetic separator are presented in this paper. However, the same general concepts are used to specify secondary and tertiary separators. The areas of interest discussed include flowsheet service, tank configuration, magnet design, bearings, materials of construction, and some minor mechanical details. FLOWSHEET SERVICE The primary magnetic separators in the Pilotac Concentrator flowsheet are located after the first stage of grinding as shown in Fig. 1.

The Montgary pegmatite is located at Bernic Lake in the southeastern Manitoba pegmatite district. 'It has a complex internal structure with several contrasting mineral assemblages. The pegmatite contains a number of potentially valuable miners including spodumene, amblygonite,. lepidolite, zinnwaidite, pollucite and beryl.. The distribution of each of these within the pegmatite is related to the internal structure and controlled by a specific mineral assemblage. Parts of the pegmatite contain a high concentration of spodumene. The pollucite occurrence is of unique character and is one of the largest known deposits of this mineral. The pegmatite is still-like in attitude with a maximum dip of about 15 degrees. Its contents with the amphibolitic wall rocks are sharp and tourmalinized. Mineral assemblages present include perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, spodumene-microcline perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, cleavelandite-lithia micas-quartz, quartz-amblygonite, albite, lepidolite, pollucite, and quartz assemblages. The occurrence and relationships of these are described and possible relationships between attitude and internal structure are discussed. Many features of the pegmatite suggest that the deposit formed by crystallization and differentiation of a pegmatitic fluid in a restricted system. These features are discussed. The nature and occurrence of the pollucite, lepidolite and albite assemblages are such, however that it is difficult to visualize them resulting from such a system. These assemblages may be of later replacement origin. The source of the, late, alkali-rich replacing solutions may be unmixing of soda and the rarer alkalis (lithium, rubidium, caesium) from earlier-formed silicates in a manner analogous to the unmixing of soda feldspar in perthites. Various aspects of this hypothesis are examined.

SOUTH AFRICAN MILLING PRACTICE All modern South African gold plants operate primarily on the principle of exposing the gold particles in the ore by fine grinding and then cyaniding the total pulp. Although there are minor variations and occasional depart- ures from established practices among the fifty gold mines in South Africa, the normal plant operations proceed as follows. After removal of waste rock by hand sorting (15Y0 on average) the ore is crushed in cone crushers to minus 1/2 inch and then ground to approximately 75% minus 200 mesh by milling with either rod, ball or pebble mills as primary units and pebble mills for the secondary grind. Classification in both circuits is almost invariably conducted with 20" cyclones of 30" or larger diameter. Gravity concentration in the milling circuit followed by barrel amalgamation of the concentrates is practiced in 70Y0 of the plants, particularly where the ore grade is high. A slightly better overall recovery is obtained than with direct cyanidation, but additional handling is involved. Johnson cylinder s , plane tables or belt concentrators, all lined with suitable types of molded rubber riffles, are used for this purpose. At all mines, cyanidation is the main process, usually conducted by continuous treatment in Pachuca tanks and pulp separation with rotary drum filters. Cyanide solutions contain about 0.0 1570 NaCN and require a protective alkalinity of 0.02070 CaO. Precipitation of the gold from cyanide solution is exclusively by zinc dust and lead nitrate using the Merrill-Crowe system in conjunction with Stellar pressure filters. The zinc precipitate is smelted, generally after a preliminary concentration by sulfuric acid, in electric furnaces, mostly submerged arc types, with a silica and borax flux, yield- ing a bullion of 8870 gold, 9% silver, and 370 base metals. The gold content of the ore varies between 0.20 and 1.0 oz Troy per short ton and extraction efficiency ranges from 9570 to 9870. In general, 4070 of the gold output is recovered by amalgamation and 6070 by cyanidation; but in some cases, it is entirely by cyanidation. Flotation has not been adopted for gold extraction as it has not proved as efficient as cyanidation. It is, however, often applied to ores containing higher than 1% sulfur for the recovery of pyrite for sulfuric acid production. On the eastern side of the Witwaters rand Basin, "run-of -mine milling” was introduced in 1960 and in three of the four mills in this area both sorting and crushing have been eliminated. The ore received from the shafts is conveyed to storage silos and then fed by Williamson automatic feed controllers to pebble mills ranging from 12 to 14 feet diameter, and 16 to 20 feet long. The pebble mills operate in closed circuit with 42 inch cyclones and the slime produced is thickened and cyanided in the conventional manner. No selective
