The January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, 1943, is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. Practical Ball-mill Tests in a Cylindrical Mill Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manu- facture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4¼ in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 25/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3¼ in. , 3 in. or 2½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beche hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000, pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 25/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. The running time of the test-mill was divided into approximately equal periods of five days 13½ hours each. The usual procedure was to examine and make up the load

The filter cake from the vacuum drum filters of a uranium ore processing plant still contains some leach solution. If the filter cake is not efficiently washed the associated leach solution is lost. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a filter cake that is permeable enough to allow efficient washing. The dewatering characteristics of the solid-liquid system must be improved to obtain flocs with sufficient strength to withstand the suction pressure of the filtration system. To facilitate efficient filtration with minimum cake moisture, studies were undertaken to improve the dewatering characteristics of the cake using different types of flocculants and surfactants. In these studies, flocs were formed with anionic, cationic or nonionic flocculants. The best performance was obtained with a low cationic high molecular weight flocculant. The filtration parameters, namely, capillary suction time, cake resistance, cake permeability and final moisture content of the filter cake, are improved by using a combination of flocculant and nonionic surfactant.

The four new oil-field discoveries made in the East and East Central Texas districts during 1941 were the East Long Lake field, Anderson County; Pickering field, Shelby County; Pleasant Grove field, Rusk County, and Tri-Cities field, Henderson County. The discovery of oil production in the Pettit lime of the Lower Glen Rose was made in the Groesbeck (Barron) field in Limestone County and the Willow Springs field in Gregg County. Important extensions were made to the Pittsburg field, in Camp County, the Chapel Hill field, in Smith County, and the Hawkins field, in Wood County. The Hawkins field was extended sufficiently to more than double the number of proved surface acres. As usual the East Texas field led the district in the number of completions for the year. The second most active field during the year was the Hawkins field, with 250 new wells completed. The third most active was the Long Lake field, in which 50 wells were completed. Approximately 964 wells were completed in the district during 1941. Production and Probation The district is credited with having produced 163,566,695 bbl. of oil and distillate during the year. This represents a decrease of 4 per cent from the 170,424,685 bbl. of oil and distillate produced during the preceding year. The production of 130,378,620 bbl. of oil and distillate from the East Texas field represents 79.7 per cent of the total production of the district; that is, 6.3 per cent less than the production for the year 1940, The district had an estimated basic daily allowable of 614,982 bbl. of oil on Dec. 31. Approximately 33 per cent of the state's annual production was produced in the district, compared with 34.9 per cent for 1940. Since the majority of the fields in this district are subject to proration, any change in the annual production is attributable largely to changes in proration schedules and number of shutdown days. Fields subject to shutdown days were closed in for 113 days during the year, with the exception of the East Texas field, which was shut down 111 days. An order was promulgated by the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission for encouraging the disposal of salt water and reservoir-pressure maintenance in the East Texas field. Discoveries Tex Harvey Oil Company'sNo. I S. E. J. Cartmel was completed as the discovery well for the East Long Lake field, Anderson County. Production was found in the Woodbine sand, the horizon from which the Long Lake field produces. The Pickering field, Shelby County, secures its production from the Nacatoch sand, found at an approximate depth of 1510 ft., in A. E. McKiernan's No. I, Pickering Lumbering Co. Acknowledgements The following account has been compiled mainly from records and maps of Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944), Limited, hereinafter called the Crown Company. This work was done under the supervision first of R. F. Murphy, Chief Geologist, and later of E. B. Gillanders, Eldorado Mine Manager and Manager of Eldorado Exploration Division. W. F. James and B. S. W. Buffam are consulting geologists. Since 1946, S. N. Kesten has supervised geological work for the Company in the Goldfields area. Where maps of Eldorado properties have been included in this paper, the name of the geologist who examined the property is acknowledged on the map. Outline of General Geology The geology of the area is described in the Goldfields and Martin Lake preliminary maps of the Geological Survey and accompanying Paper 49-17. In brief, the Tazin series of Precambrian age, consisting mainly of sediments with minor interbedded volcanics and basic intrusives, is intruded and replaced by granite, now generally gneissic. The late-Precambrian Athabaska series of conglomerate and arkose, with interbedded basalt and andesite flows, rests unconformably on the older rocks. All these rocks are cut by small diabase dykes. The geological terms used in this paper and in the accompanying figures are standard with the exception of the term 'mafic rocks'. These include all the basic or dark coloured rocks of the Tazin group, such as amphibolites, biotite schists, and chlorite-epidote rocks (greenstones), whether they be of extrusive, intrusive, or sedimentary origin.

The stress-strain behavior of zinc single crystals was measured over a strain range of 10-6 to 10-2. The phenomenon of macroyielding was observed in detail and plastic strains were detected at almost zero-stress. Closed hysteresis loops were observed during loading and unloading in the strain region of about 10-5. From the hysteresis a frictional stress on the dislocation of about 6 psi was obtained. A preliminary analysis indicates that impurities are primarily responsible for the friction. Nonelastic Strains as much as 10 -4 were recovered depending on the amount of prior deformation. Part of the recovered strain occurs instantaneously upon unloading and the remainder occurs at zero stress. The time dependence of the recovered strain was measured. THIS investigation is concerned with the details of plastic deformation preceding the ordinary yield point as measured with the usual strain sensitivity of about 10-4. The approach leads to internal friction observations in the hitherto neglected frequency range below 10-1 cycles per sec. It is believed that if the phenomenon of macroscopic yielding is to be understood, then the stress-strain curve in the neighborhood of the macroyield point should be greatly magnified. It may then be possible to determine whether macroscopic yielding is a unique event or whether it is a process which begins gradually at a lower stress. In the case of low-carbon steel a unique event obviously occurs at the macroscopic yield point as indicated by a drop in the load, but copper appears to exhibit a gradual transition from the elastic to the plastic state. In zinc the yield point is rather abrupt although the data indicates that some plastic deformation precedes large scale yielding.' One of the purposes of this investigation is to determine whether there is an abrupt transition from the preyield microstrain region to the region of macroscopic deformation. Such a rapid transition would support the concept that there is a critical stress for yielding. The concept that yielding is a unique event associated with such phenomenon as activating a Frank-Read source, freeing the dislocation from solute atoms, dislocations cutting through dislocations, or dislocations moving freely by one another, has been expounded widely on theoretical grounds. It is hoped that highly sensitive measurements of strain in the neighborhood of the macroscopic yield point will shed some light on the event known as the "Yield Point". EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens—High-purity zinc was cast into spherical graphite moulds in air and grown into spherical single crystals by the Bridgman method under a positive pressure of Argon gas. Spectro-graphic analysis of cleaved sections from four crystals showed a purity of 99.994 pet Zn. The specimens were acid machined with an 1/8 in. gage section in a form similar to those used by Parker and co-workers.2 Bausch type grips were fastened to the specimen by Epon VI adhesive. The specimens were oriented so that only [1120] (0001) slip occurred. Fig. 1 shows two of the specimens in the grips. Prior to each test, the gage section of the specimen was given a concentrated HNO3 chemical polish followed by alcohol rinsing and air blast drying. 2) Test Method- The shear tests were performed on an Instron testing machine and the experimental set-up was made very "hard". Strain could be measured to a sensitivity of 10 -6 by means of a capacitance gage extensometer. The design and calibration of this type of extensometer to measure microstrain, as applied to pure shear and tensile tests of metals, will be the subject of a separate paper—therefore, only a brief account will be presented here. The St. Lawrence Seaway's Welland Canal has been undergoing a rehabilitation program that requires the removal of deteriorated concrete from the 25 meter high lock walls. Multi million dollar contracts must be completed during the three month winter freeze up. New blast designs have drastically cut the time required for concrete demolition. All blast results including vibration, noise, underbreak, overbreak, scaling and flyrock have been improved and at a lower cost.

"Two practical methods for correlating two or more diamond-drill core intersections, using a stereographic projection software are presented. The first may be used to establish if two or more vein intersections are correlative, based on their core angles and diamond-drillhole attitudes. The second method allows prediction of main vein attitudes from numerous intersections, based on a spherical density contouring projection. The methods are suitable for: (1) correlating veins in complex orebodies; (2) ascertaining lateral continuity of ore for reserve estimations; (3) demonstrating the hidden complexity of an orebody; and (4) correlating and interpreting various planar elements.IntroductionModern mineral exploration relies on diamond- drill core data and on the ability of geologists to interpret them. Drill core generally yields unoriented information, unless an expensive orientation device is used. As a consequence, strike and dip of planar elements such as lithological contacts or mineralized veins cannot be determined easily. This is particularly true for blind deposits (covered by thick overburden) and complex orebodies, where field data cannot support drilling interpretations. Such a problem has been addressed previously using two and three diamond drillholes and several solutions were proposed based on trigonometry, and geometric and stereographic projections (Mead, 1921; Wisser, 1932; Fischer, 1941; Stein, 1941; Bucher, 1943; Gilluly, 1944; Addie, 1962; Mills, 1963; Lyons, 1964). However, these solutions are time consuming and not relevant to present day computerized data plots."

UNTIL quite recently, Alsace was the only district in France where petroleum could be found in somewhat industrial quantities. The Pechelbronn fields produce, however, only about 80,000 tons a year, which represent approximately one-eighth of the domestic consumption. Much research work has been done in Alsace to find the prolongation of the Pechelbronn fields, but instead of oil the drillings revealed the existence of large deposits of potash. This can be easily explained when one remembers that the Pechelbronn oil is of the Oligocene period, and that in the Alsatian stratification the Oligocene lies immediately on the Keuper, i. e., on the strata that originate from a period during which the largest salt and potash deposits were constituted. Before the war, and mostly at the end of the last century, some wells were drilled in. various districts of France where some analogies could be found with the Alsatian geology, the borings being mainly made in the Triassic and Tertiary beds. They led to negative results. After the war, the growing importance of oil urged the necessity of resuming the explorations. But it. is our belief that this was greatly facilitated by the enacting of new legislation, which is embodied in the Mine Act of May 16, 1922.

So FAR as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present-day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 65 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 to over 1000 tons per day in exceptional instances of modern practice. In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.

Trade unions are people. As organisations they exist to represent the needs and interests of their members; that is the workforce. Thus one of the underlying objectives of the trade union movement has been and will continue to be: achieving from management recog- nition that the labour input to the production process - whether that be in the factory, office or service context - is made up of individual people who can not be treated as just another factor of production. The essential difference between labour input and other factors of production such as capital and raw material is the "humanness" of the individual entities which make up a firm, company or industry's labour supply. Recognition of the "people" input to the production process has essentially two aspects: humanisation of the workplace and the treatment of labour as human beings who have a role to play both within the workplace and within broader society.

Metallurgical considerations in the automation of gold-recovery plants By H. E. CROSS. Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng.) Hons. (Fellow) The advantages of the automation of gold-recovery plants are examined. The various sections of a gold-recovery plant are analysed, and the extent to which instrumentation can usefully be employed is described. INTRODUCTION The scope of this paper is restricted to the ore-treatment and recovery plants on Witwatersrand gold mines. To extend the field to plants that process base metals and industrial minerals would result in a paper that would be too lengthy. However, the subject matter of this paper is applicable to most mineraldressing and recovery plants and will, it is hoped, be a foundation on which to build somewhat more sophisticated control systems required in the base-metals field.

Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in December 1969, the most comprehensive law in the history of the coal mining industry went into effect. Hardly anyone will quarrel with the philosophy that all miners in the United States should be afforded equal protection under the law irrespective of the state in which they reside. Furthermore, it appears contrary to any sound judgment that a competitive advantage should appear to accrue to a mine operator because his operations are located in a state with less stringent (and costly) health and safety laws Yet it is recognized that the quality of state mine laws and inspection agencies has been extremely variable. Why, then, should there be such resentments over the passage of the Act? The Act was written In the highly emotionally charged atmosphere following the Consol No. 9 disaster: the technical expertise within the industry was discredited and largely ignored; and those directly involved in the writing of the Act were non- technical and largely nonmining people. The result was that the law incorporated certain requirements that were impossible to meet (automatic brakes are the classical example) and certain parts that were too ambiguous and consequently open to interpretation.

AN economist at MIT provided Americans with myth destroying information which should prove effective against the gentlemen of the extreme left. For a number of years they have charged that a small number of companies in each industry has been grabbing more and more of the industry's business. M. A. Adelman has shown that the concentration of business in the hands of big corporations has not shown any sign of growth during the last 50 years. Quite the contrary, there has been a slight decline in this concentration, according to Adelman. There are more small companies per thousand population than ever before. Bearing this out is the fact that International Harvester is now doing 41 pct of the possible market against a former 85 pct; American Can Co. has dropped from 90 pct to 50 pct; American Smelting is down to 31 pct compared with 90 pct; and lastly, U. S. Steel which has plummeted from 65 pct to slightly more than 30 pct of the steel market. Declines of the same proportions have hit big companies in other industries. Price cuts on Detroit's 1953 automobiles indicate that even among the biggest competition is still one of the most important household gods. Big business is still slugging it out for the attention of the American consumer. It's a battle which can only have one result-benefit to the man who buys.

Films of molybdenum have been prepared by sputtering onto oxidized silicon substrates. The resistivity. lattice parameter, orientation, and grain size were studied as a function of substrate temperature and substrate bias. Under normal sputtering conditions, the resistivity of the films was found to be quite high (600 x 10 ohm-crn). However, with the use of the negative substrate bias of 100 v and a substrate temperature of 350°C, films weve produced with a resistivity of ahout twice that of bulk molybdenum. The lattice parameters measured in a direction nornzal to the surface of the films weve found to be gveatev than the bulk value. This was interpreted as being at least partly due to the presence of compressive stresses. The effects of annealing in an Ar-H atmosphere were studied in terms of diffraction line width, lattice parameter, and resistivity. BECAUSE of its relatively low bulk resistivity (5.6 x 106 ohm-cm)' molybdenum is potentially interesting as a thin-film conductor in integrated circuits. An additional feature which makes it attractive for this purpose is its low coefficient of expansion (5.6 x KT6 per "c),' which is fairly well matched to that of silicon (3.2 x 10 per c). It is possible to deposit molybdenum films by evaporation but generally films produced in this manner have a high resistivity. In order to achieve resistivities close to bulk value, Holmwood and Glang found it necessary to operate in a vacuum of about 107 Torr and to maintain the substrates at 600 C during film deposition. Sputtered molybdenum films have been examined by Belser et a1.7 and, recently, by Glang et al.' This paper describes the results of an attempt to extend some of that work and examine the effects of annealing and getter sputtering on the physical and structural properties of the films produced. SPUTTERING APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus used for most of the film sputtering work described here consisted of two "fingers" serving as anode and cathode, respectively, which were mounted within an 18-in.-diam glass chamber. A liquid nitrogen-trapped 6-in. diffusion-pump system was used to achieve a vacuum of about 1 x 107 Torr within the chamber prior to sputtering. The essential features of the equipment are shown in Fig. 1. Cathode and anode fingers are stainless-steel tubes isolated from the top and bottom plates by Teflon collars. In order to limit the discharge to the space between anode and cathode, each finger is surrounded by an aluminum hield, at ground potential, having an internal diameter 18 in. larger than the outside diameter of the finger. The cathode and anode fingers are 6 and 4 in. in diam, respectively. A 116-in.-thick sheet of molybdenum is brazed with a 10 pct Pd, 58 pct Ag, 32 pct Cu alloy to a copper disc which is mounted by means of screws and a large 0 ring onto the lower end of the cathode finger. The disc is cooled during sputtering by water circulation inside the finger. The use of several feet of plastic tubing for the water input and outputg reduces leakage to ground to less than 1 ma when the cathode potential is raised to 5 kv. The upper end of the anode finger is terminated by a brazed-on copper block. A variety of specimen holders can be easily mounted on the upper face of this block. Substrate heating or cooling is achieved by use of an appropriate unit attached to the lower face of the same block. Heating is achieved by means of cartridge-type heaters and cooling by copper coils fed with forming gas under pressure. The inner chamber of the specimen finger constitutes a small vacuum chamber of its own which is evacuated by an auxiliary mechanical pump in order to limit heating element oxidation and heat transfer by convection currents. An advantage of the finger arrangement is the absence of cooling and heating coils and wires within the main chamber. The stain less-steel shutter is useful to establish a discharge for cleaning the cathode at the beginning of each sputtering run. Water cooling of the shutter reduces heating and the out-gassing of impurities which might condense on the nearby substrates. Unless otherwise specified, the substrates used in these experiments were 1-in.-diam oxidized silicon wafe:s, 0.007 in. thick, having an oxide thickness of 6000A. The substrate holders were large copper discs onto the surface of which a number of molybdenum discs, 116 in. thick and 78 in. in diam, were brazed. The wafers were clamped to the molybdenum discs

In recent years, the advantages of tempered martensite as a microstructure for steel parts have been well established. For parts that must not fracture brittlely when loaded at high rates, at low temperatures, or under conditions of combined stress, tempered martensite is especially desirable. One of the factors that determine whether a steel part will have a martensitic structure after heat treatment is the hardenability of the steel. Despite the large amount of recent research, there are still many unsettled basic questions concerning hardenability and its relation to chemical composition, and, indeed, considerable disagreement among investigators in the field. Much of the uncertainty that beclouds the existing knowledge of hardenability arises from the fact that hardenability is still a wholly empirical concept, and has not been quantitatively related to the more fundamental knowledge of isothermal decomposition of austenite. Hardenability is, essentiaily, a measure of the time required for small percentages of austenite to decompose, during continuous cooling, to pearlite, bainite, proeutectoid ferrite, or proeutec-toid carbide. In the practical heat-treat- ment of steel, also, the decomposition of austenite is usually not isothermal but rather during cooling, or, in general, is not at a single constant temperature. Thus, both hardenability and practical heat treatment involve anisothermal decomposition of austenite. In a previous publication1 the author and his collaborators outlined the principles that govern the relations between isothermal and anisothermal decomposition of austenite, and reviewed the experimental information available in 1945. To avoid repetition, familiarity with that article (Paper I) will be assumed, and attention given primarily to work carried out or published since 1945. The method generally employed was explained in Paper I: anisothermal transformation is studied through investigation of the effect of holding austenite at one temperature upon its subsequent decomposition at another temperature. Both temperatures are below the stability range of the austenite. This paper is confined to studies in which only a small amount of transformation occurred at the first temperature. This is the only case of importance in practical heat treatment when an essentially martensitic structure is sought. Materials and Procedure It was necessary to use different steels for the studies involving proeutectoid ferrite and for those involving proeutectoid carbide, beeause the two constituents have not been found to form in the same steel. "Abstract — Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite."

Mining hoists are major components of any underground mine, however, the detailed design work required to get the actual power required for a particular hoist is outside the scope of preliminary feasibility studies. Nonetheless, a hoist is costly. Therefore, an accurate estimate is needed for the design parameters and the power required. There are two methods available, namely, the O’Hara method and the Society of Mining Engineers’ method. Tests were done for both methods employing nine friction hoists and 19 drum hoists currently in use at Canadian mines. The O’Hara method provided unacceptable results for both friction and drum hoists. While, the SME method was designed for American regulations and factors of safety which often differ significantly from Canadian ones, good results were obtained. The two relationships deter-mined were simply to add 5% to friction hoist design and to add 4% to drum hoist design. Modifying the SME method by these two factors will allow the hoisting system determined by the SME method to be within the error for a prefeasibility study.
