Fatalities from falls of roof and coal are responsible for the death of more than 1,000 miners annually in the bituminous coal mines of the United States, or practically one-half of the total fatalities in and about these mines. The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal-mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years.

The production of petroleum in New York state in 1942 amounted to 5,410,000 bbl. This represents an increase over each of the four preceding years, and, with the exception of 1937, is the largest production since the peak of over six million barrels in 1882, shortly after the discovery of oil in Allegany County. The oil industry in New York is virtually stabilized and there has been little or no exploration for new sources of supply in recent years. The boundaries of the present fields were established more than 30 years ago and since then no additional reserves have been found. Deep drilling for natural gas during the past 10 years both within and without the oil fields has failed to find oil in quantity below the present producing sands of Devonian age. Oil Since 1882, the New York fields have produced approximately 140 million barrels of oil. Of this amount, 65 million was produced up to the year 1919 by ordinary pumping methods; that is, without flooding by water or the use of other secondary-recovery methods. In the year 1919, when a law was passed making the use of water-flooding methods legal, the oil production, of the state amounted to only 851,000 bbl. In the 23 years since 1919, there have been produced in the state 75 million barrels, or 10 million more than in the previous 37 years, which included the period of flush production. Price.—On March 26, the price of crude oil was raised from $2.75 to $3.00 per barrel, hut this increase had little or no effect on the number of wells drilled. In the Allegany field, which accounts for three fourths of the state's oil production, 1259 wells were completed in 1942, 7 less than in 1941. The smaller number of wells drilled was not only due to the shortage of labor but also was caused by the fact that in water-flooding territory a definite program for drilling wells is followed, and the flush period of an oil well is not usually reached in time to profit by any given price increase. Daily Production.—All of the oil wells in New York state, some 21,000 in number, are small producers. The average daily oil production is 7/10 bbl. per well. Under good flooding conditions, a maximum production of 5 to 8 bbl, a day is reached about one year after the flood begins to act on the well. In 5 years the daily production usually is less than one barrel. Although most of the oil in New York is produced by flooding, an estimated 2500 old wells produce without flooding. Some of these produce as little as 1/20 bbl. a day and are pumped only at intervals. The small producing Wells are mostly on lands leased to the larger oil companies and later will be included in a flooding program. At present, they are pumped only because the owners of the land insist on the royalty. Government Aid Needed.—Because of its good lubricating qualities, New York oil is one of those for which there is an insistent and growing demand, but even at its present price of $3.00 per barrel, many of the operators are producing at a loss.

GLASS squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. 1). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2 1/2-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through" of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. CONTROLLED cold work is used between solution heat treatment and precipitation heat treatment for producing certain tempers of the commercial aluminum base alloy 2219 (designation of the Aluminum Association, U.S.A.) which contains 6.3 pet Cu as the major ingredient responsible for the age hardening. The complete composition limits for this alloy are listed in Table I. The alloy has been described in detail,' and the control of the heat treatment has also been published.2 Beneficial effects of such cold work in other alloys have also been pointed out.3'4 NO data have been published on the effects of varying amounts of cold work under fixed aging conditions. In connection with an investigation of the possibility of providing the desired cold work by explosively generated shock waves, it became desirable to investigate the effect of variable cold work, and to compare the re -sults with those obtained from explosives. Differences and similarities in the life cycle of mining and civil projects are discussed. A closer relationship between the mining and civil fraternities is beginning to develop and should be encouraged because of the resultant exchange of experience and technology which benefits both disciplines. An attempt is made to assess future potential for new, major projects and trends in the implementation thereof.

"INTRODUCTION The existing Baltimore and Potomac (B&P) Tunnel accommodates Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) and MARC (Maryland Rail Corporation) service between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC and occasional local freight service. The Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel Replacement Project proposes new tunnel construction through Baltimore, Maryland along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) that maintains connections to Baltimore Pennsylvania Station. After the Replacement Project is constructed and operational, the disposition of the existing tunnel must be determined. The tunnel could be abandoned; however, considering its location in a congested downtown, alternative uses have been considered to take advantage of this unique piece of infrastructure by repurposing it. Alternative uses for the existing 140-year-old B&P Tunnel may end up being cost effective and should be considered, as the tunnel can be made accessible to construction crews for extended periods of time that will allow for efficient work activities unlike when it is fully operational. Possible alternatives include conversion for non-rail use, rehabilitation, or complete modernization for continued rail traffic. The following paper describes the four potential fates of the conceptual designs for the existing B&P Tunnel. The four concepts include: • No Build – rehabilitate to keep the tunnel operational. • Abandonment – complete or partial sealing of the tunnel. • Adaptive Re-Use –repurpose the tunnel with sustainable building practice. • Full Rehabilitation and Modernization – bring to current fire-life safety aspects. Of the four concepts, only the no build addresses maintaining the tunnel while it is under traffic. The remaining fates address the existing tunnel after the new tunnel is operational and railroad traffic has been diverted to it. Development of these conceptual designs were provided in a concept design study (Parsons Brinckerhoff/Parsons, 2015) that supports the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process for the Project, which includes evaluation of possible alternative uses of the existing B&P Tunnel."

"Coal is a crucial feedstock for South Africa’s unique synfuels and petrochemicals from coal industry and it is used as the main feedstock to produce synthesis gas (CO and H2) via the Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasification process. Detailed coal characteristics are essential to predict gasification behaviour when a specific coal source is to be gasified.The principle aim of this paper is to highlight and discuss those specific coal characteristics, which affect gasification behaviour and stability.In order to determine the suitability of a coal source for gasification purposes, the coal is characterized and the results compared with historical data. Benchmark data, where it was possible to operate the gasifier with ease and relatively high stability, is used as a reference.Coal sources with extreme properties (i.e. low reactivity, ash content <10% as is used by Dakota Gasification Company, or “brown coal” with moisture >30%) can probably be gasified in a Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasifier provided that certain operational changes are implemented. Other properties, like high caking and extreme ash content for example, require blending to acceptable levels."

A microscopic X-ray diffraction technique was employed for the simultaneous study of the behavior of several families of lattice planes, whose local orientatiotz changes are manufestations of internal distortions resulting from specimen deformation. Photographs taken using aluminum were single crystals 1/64 in. In diam are presented which illustrate the appearance of various types of deformation- or growth- induced structural variations. Slip and lattice bending were detected in tensile tests for strains as small as 0.1 pct. Evidence of deformation bands, lineage structure, and void formation wns also shown. AmONG the most important methods of studying internal stresses in metals is the utilization of various X-ray techniques. The general subject of X-ray metallography has been treated in a most excellent manner by Taylor,1 and the use of X-rays for the direct observation of imperfections in crystals has recently been reviewed in an article by Newkirk2 and in the book edited by Newkirk and Wernick.3 Since the inception of metallographic X-ray analysis, there have been numerous technological developments and refinements, each with its particular advantages and disadvantages and, acrording to these, its particular applications. X-ray diffraction techniques can be divided into two general categories, that of X-ray diffraction microscopy and that of X-ray diffraction macroscopy. In the former are included such methods as those of Berg-Barrett, Lang, and Schultz2,3 which are concerned with microscopic imperfections such as dislocations. The second category includes all work concerned with the study of the condition of a crystal lattice structure as indicated by the marroscopic detail in its diffraction patterns. An example of this is the study of the diffraction manifestations of inhomogeneous plastic deformation as manifested by formation of deformation bands and inhomogeneous lattice rotations. The method used in the present investigation was an X-ray diffraction macroscopy technique. The geometry and analytical aspects of the method were similar to those of Julien and Cullity.4,5 The source was collimated with a single slit in a manner simi- lar to the "parallel beam&apos;&apos; method of Barth and Hosemann6 except that a continuous spectrum of radiation was employed. The apparatus produced large-beam transmission Laue patterns of thin cylindrical aluminum-wire crystals, which were deformed either in tension or torsion. Although the conventional X-ray target and interposed slit were not capable of the high resolution obtainable with a fine-focus X-ray source as employed in a microfocus apparatus, resolution was a secondary consideration in our technique, and was sacrificed to obtain sufficient intensity along a sizable length of the specimen. By using a grid indexing technique similar to that of Barth,7 we were able to study several diffraction lines from various planes simultaneously. The results of these tests give additional information with regard to the inhomogeneous deformation of single crystals, and the indexing procedure used provides a correlation between portions of the test specimen and portions of a diffracted beam. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The experimental arrangement used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. A source of continuous X radiation from a vertically mounted Machlett X-ray tube possessing a copper target and operated at 20 kv and 10 ma was passed down a horizontal lead tube 80 cm long which terminated in an adjustable vertical brass slit. The slit opening was adjusted to correspond with the diameter of the test specimen. In front of the brass slit it was possible to place a screen wire mesh, one horizontal strand of which was a lead wire which served as a fiduciary mark, the screen itself serving as an indexing system as will be described later. "Combustion is used throughout the mineral processing industry to produce steam in boilers, to dry concentrates in rotary dryers, and to apply heat treatments in pyrometallurgical furnaces. Tight combustion control is very important in latter type of furnace since the combustion conditions directly affect final ore quality. However, achieving tight combustion control is not straightforward since most of the flames encountered in industry are turbulent non-premixed flames, they are affected by several unmeasured disturbances and are often produced by burning several types of fuel simultaneously, some of them coming from other parts of the plant. A novel method is proposed in this paper to improve process and product quality control as well as to optimize the combustion conditions based on digital flame color images. Multivariate Image Analysis and Regression is to used extract the flame color characteristics from images to predict the solids discharge temperature of an industrial rotary kiln. It is shown that this method yield extremely good 10 minutes ahead forecast of the temperature and should lead to a substantial reduction in product quality variability as well as in fuel consumption.INTRODUCTIONFuel-fired furnaces are often used in the mineral processing industry for various purposes, such as for the production of steam (utility boiler), in conjunction with rotary dryers to dry mineral concentrates or in pyrometallurgical processes for induration, roasting, and so forth. These furnaces are necessary in the supply chain from the mine to the metals, but their operating costs are constantly rising due to the fluctuations in fuel prices. Moreover, these processes are now targeted by the Kyoto Protocol since they are energy intensive and they produce significant amounts of CO2 and other pollutants such CO, NOx and SO2. To achieve both a reduction in operating costs (i.e. fuel consumption) and in pollutant emissions while maintaining or improving product quality, one needs to have a very good control of the combustion process."

"Studies of the flow fields and particle impaction characteristics are more complicated in multi-nozzle impactors than in single-nozzle impactors, since the jets of air must penetrate cross-flowing air to impinge on the impaction plate. Results of heat and mass transfer analysis are employed to describe the cross-flow pattern in multi-nozzle impactors. A cross-flow parameter has been derived to predict the deflection of the air jet by the cross-flow. This parameter is expressed as a function of the geometric parameters for the multi-nozzle impactor. DnN 4D,, where N is the number of nozzles, Dn the nozzle diameter and D, the nozzle cluster diameter. Empirical particle collection data show that multi-nozzle impactors operate satisfactorily, if the cross-flow parameter is less than a critical value of 1.2. Impactors operating with a cross-flow parameter larger than this critical value are shown to possess poor particle collection characteristics.Inertial impactors of many designs have been used for sampling aerosol particles. Impactors can be single stage, consisting of a nozzle and an impaction plate, or a cascade impactor with several stages in series. The simplest design for a stage is a single nozzle with a flat impaction plate. However, many designs use stages with multiple nozzles of identical size, which allows for compact impactors to be designed at rather substantial flow rates and moderate pressure drops.Nearly all of the theoretical work, and much of the experimental work, has been performed on single-nozzle impactors. The results of single-nozzle impactor analysis are often applied to multiple-nozzle impactors, which are assumed to be a group of individual nozzles, each operating as though they were single nozzles. However, an important fact is often ignored: the interaction of flow from adjacent nozzles can change not only the fluid mechanics in the impaction region, but also the locations of the jet stagnation points, and the impaction characteristics of each nozzle.The effect of multiple nozzles on the particle collection characteristics of impactors has been studied by a few investigators. May (1964), Fletch et al. (1967), Friedrichs (1968), and Vaughan (1986) reported that the quantity of particles in deposits of nozzles in the first two stages of the Andersen multi-nozzle cascade impactor were not equal. The inner deposits appeared to contain fewer particles than the outer ones. However, Vaughan (1986) in addition showed that many of the deposits in the outer three rows were missing on the first stage, even though the outer deposits that were present were larger than the inner deposits.May (1964) conducted experiments and explained the phenomenon of smaller deposits near the center than near the edge. He noted that in Andersen cascade impactors the air issuing from the nozzles moves radially outward along the narrow channel between the nozzle plate and the impaction plate. This flow at 28.31min -1 created a pressure difference of about 1 mm water between the inner and outer sections of the channel. The effect was most pronounced in the first two stages, where the pressure drop across the nozzles was also about 1 mm water. Here, the flow velocities in the nozzles, and hence the deposits, were smallest at the center and increased toward the periphery of the impaction plate. since the pressure drop across the nozzles was the smallest at the center and a maximum at the periphery. This effect was negligible in the lower stages because of a larger pressure drop across the nozzles. According to May (1964), this effect could be eliminated by increasing the nozzle-to-impaction-plate distance to three nozzle diameters and improving the nozzle arrangement to allow air flow to escape to the periphery more easily."

United States production of the industrial minerals, ahead of that of the metals since 1946, has shown a steady and rapid growth. By 1963, their value was more than twice that of the metals. Yet papers on the metallic ores continue to dominate the meetings of the Society of Economic Geologists and constitute nearly nine-tenths of the lead papers in Economic Geology. Most of the geological communication that does take place concerning the industrial minerals deals with high-value special-purpose minerals, which are comparable to the metallic ores in geologic complexity. The large-bulk rock products, which are growing fastest in production value, are characterized by relatively simple geology and by thousands of small producing firms, many of which do little or no geological work. The need for geological advice by this very large segment of the industry is bound to increase. In the meantime, a plea is made for more geological communication among those concerned with the industrial minerals of all varieties.

"INTRODUCTION During its wartime program of exploration for minerals essential to the national economy, the Bureau of Mines was instructed to investigate sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel. As a part of this investigation, some work was done on the iron deposits on the Neutral and Aztec claims on Buckhorn Mountain Canogan County, Washington, which was designed chiefly to indicate the nature and behavior of the ore deposits below the surface exposures. Diamond drilling was started in June and completed in July 1945. Preliminary laboratory tests on iron, ore from Buckhorn Mountain were completed during the fall and winter of 1945. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The stability problems of back- filled spoil banks became more important since the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was enacted. The material properties of spoil banks were categorized as the first part of the study and spoil slope stability was evaluated using computer programs as a second part. Emphasis was placed on the effects of natural barriers, which is required in the federal law.

MUCH has been written concerning the hoisting equipment of various mines -throughout the country, but most of the literature on the subject, if not all, describes equipment of extraordinary capacity and the small and medium-sized outfits have been neglected. The hoisting equipment here described is capable &apos;of handling about 1200 tons per day. It has not been worked, to capacity, but 600 to 700 tons, together with men and materials, have been handled in two shifts without any great effort. Only one shaft extends from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine; see Fig. 1. It is composed of three compartments, two of which are used for hoisting and the third for water, air, and electrical lines, and for sinking purposes. In 1909, this shaft was raised from the 1000-ft. (304-m.) level to the 700-ft. There a station was cut and an air hoist installed. At this time all mining operations were confined to the upper levels of the mine; that is; above the 700-ft. The. ore was-dropped to this level through chutes from the 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-ft. levels and then lowered in cars on cages to the 1000-ft., which is the main haulage adit, the mill and railroad bins being about 3000 ft. from the shaft. Orebodies were, in due time, developed on the 1000-ft. level and below. Therefore, in 1913, the shaft was sunk to the 1150-ft. level and thereafter sinking was continued at regular intervals until the 1500-ft. level was reached. But, hoisting from the 1300-ft. level was a difficult, and slow process with the antiquated air hoist, so, in 1916, it was derided to raise the shaft to the surface and install a modern, electrically operated hoist. This was completed early in 1917 and the hoist was in operation in March of that year.

The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5&#160;metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700&#160;t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017.
