The results of a previous basic study of the flow and design characteristics of the hydrocyclone has shown that a recovery as high as 99% with a product rating of 0.95 can be achieved on a "batch?2 basis with a single, water-only cyclone if it is configured properly. The next logical step was to demonstrate continuous processing of gob for the efficient recovery of coal by means of a laboratory-size demonstration system. A project to design and construct such a single-cyclone system was also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. A recovery of 93% with a product rating of 0.89 was demonstrated. The system design and the data taken are discussed.

Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the U.S. could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the U.S., with Australia’s internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the U.S., the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its antiquated rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The U.S. is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia’s VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the U.S. should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

Martin Marietta Aluminum, Inc. followed Howmet Aluminum Corp., Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. and Anaconda Co. in lifting August prices of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot by 3 cents to 56 cents per pound. Prior to these moves, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. raised its June ingot listings by 4 cents to 57 cents and Consolidated Aluminum Corp., 4.5 cents to 57.5 cents. Domestic merchants increased July quotes by slightly more than 1 cent to 51.3-51.8 cents per pound. ARSENIC The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued new standards, effective August 1, for worker exposure to inorganic arsenic, a toxic substance linked by OSHA to lung and lymphatic cancer. The new standard will limit worker exposure to 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an 8-hour period, a drastic reduction from the previous standard of 500 micrograms for a like period. Implementation of the new standards may be the most difficult and costly for copper smelters where arsenic is associated with the copper feed material but problems will also be encountered by producers of arsenic containing products such as for pesticides and herbicides. The new standards allow use of personal protective gear for workers as an interim measure until plant engineering controls can be put into effect.

The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

Flotation of minerals has usually been discussed in terms of solid-liquid interfacial phenomena. This paper discusses the relative importance of phenomena such as collector adsorption at other interfaces formed between the bubble, liquid and solid. Adsorption of collector ions of various chain lengths at liquid-gas and solid-gas interfaces has been obtained. The data have been analyzed under conditions corresponding to those of flotation to show the significant role of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface in determining the bubble-mineral attachment required for flotation, and consequently to suggest consideration of this role in the development of better flotation conditions. Vacuum flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate reported in the foregoing paper1 showed that the collector chain length has an effect on flotation even at concentrations below those necessary for hemi-micelle association of the hydrocarbon chains at a solid-liquid interface. This chain length effect might be explained by the following arguments: Hydrocarbon chains find it energetically favorable to be in a medium of low dielectric constant. Considering the possibility of an iceberg structure at the solid-liquid interface, such a structure would produce a region of lower dielectric constant at the solid-liquid interface than in the liquid phase, because the dielectric constant of ice is 2 to 3,2 while that of water is 80. Depending on chain length, this difference will certainly cause even individual ions to adsorb in higher quantities at the solid-liquid interface. Another mechanism to consider is the possible formation of dimers, trimers, etc and chain length would influence this formation. But, above all, the chain length effect on flotation at concentrations of low adsorption at the solid-liquid interface could be due to the significant but often-neglected role of the collector adsorption at the bub- ble surface. Collector ions or molecules are adsorbed both at the solid-liquid interface and the liquid-gas interface. Below the concentration for hemi-micelle association at the Stern plane adjacent to the surface, the bulk of the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface are in the diffuse part of the double layer. If such systems, where there is a gas bubble coming in contact with the solid surface, are to achieve some degree of electroneutrality, those collector ions would have to migrate from the diffuse part of the double layer to the region directly adjacent to the surface during the induction period when the bubble is making contact with the solid. The time necessary for this migration would contribute to the induction period required for creation of the solid-gas interface. It seems reasonable that the induction period could be reduced sufficiently for flotation to occur if these collector ions were carried to the surface by the bubble. In an attempt to ascertain whether or not the bubble could possibly have sufficient collector ions at its surface to meet the requirement mentioned above, the adsorption density of the collector ions at the liquid-air interface was determined. For this purpose, the surface tension of alkyl ammonium acetate solutions was determined as a function of concentration. Adsorption densities of the collector at the liquid-gas interface were calculated using the Gibbs adsorption equation: where y is the interfacial tension and ri and pi are the adsorption density and the chemical potential, respectively, of the chemical species, i. Using the convention that the adsorption density of water at the interface is zero, the following relationship is obtained for the liquid-gas interface where lg refers to liquid-gas interface and RA+ refers to the alkyl ammonium ions. The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Co. to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the company's main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received additional attention in recent years. An objective that no coal shipment should exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully met. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed.

With the increasing importance being placed upon modernizing the coal industry as a result of recent developments in the international energy balance, computer control has been and is being instituted in many coal cleaning plants. Control techniques that are well established in many base metal industries have been adapted to coal washing. Essential to any control scheme is an accurate measure of the parameter which is to be controlled. A sensor is required that will provide information both quickly and precisely. In fine coal circuits, the critical parameter that must be measured and controlled is the per- cent ash contained in the clean coal product and tailings. Measuring the ash content of these slurry lines on a continuous basis enables the operating conditions in the circuit to be adjusted so as to obtain optimum separation efficiencies at all times. An on-line ash monitor has been developed and tested at Michigan Technological University which is capable of making percent ash and percent solids determinations instantaneously. Two radioisotopes are employed in this system to generate signals that can be related to the density and the ash content of the slurry. Such data provide a means to execute a short term control strategy.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a demonstration project to reclaim 125 acres of abandoned strip-mined land in Lackawanna County, Pa., for public recreational, historical, and educational use as a park. The Bureau was involved in the development of the general site plan, and engineered and supervised the basic land rehabilitation. The park's Facilities include outdoor recreational activities, picnic grounds, children's play areas, primitive overnight camping, and winter sports. A major attraction is the Anthracite Museum constructed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission The project may serve as a prototype for reclaiming existing and future surface-mined lands.

"Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

Elemental distribution varies widely in the ores, minerals and beneficiated products depending on the constituents. Accurate analysis of each element present in various beneficiated products is utmost required to assess the grade in view of zero waste technology. Hence, the suitable methods and instrumental technique is of prime importance as the distribution of various elements differs in the beneficiated products. Conventional classical technique of analysis is absolute and due to this, it has not become obsolete. Besides, it is much needed for making standards for various relative techniques. Instrumental techniques comprising of X-ray fluorescence, Induced Coupled Plasma Analyzer, Carbon-Sulphur Analyzer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer etc. are important for quick and accurate analysis. However, the selection of these instruments depend on the nature of material to be analyzed. This paper highlights the importance and use of various methods/techniques and instruments involved in the analysis of various ores, minerals and beneficiated products. Introduction THE Atlin Mining District is in the northwest corner of the Province of British Columbia. Ruby Creek, where the operation to be described is situated, is 17 miles east of the town of Atlin and about 18 miles south of the south line of Yukon Territory (Fig. 1). Gold was discovered in the district in January, 1898, and the production to date from placer mines has been $4,518,000, according to the reports of the Minister of Mines for-the province. Geology The essential points in the regional geology are given in the following paragraphs. Long erosion produced a plane-like surface slightly above sea level with a few peaks and ridges.1 A gradual uplift followed and. erosion increased, the streams cut deeper, the cuts so made being afterward increased by glaciation. The ice straightened and planed the slopes of the main valleys and widened and lowered their floors, in some cases flooring the valleys with silt, sand, gravel, and clay. As the glaciers rapidly retreated, lakes were formed.

IN many of the otherwise well established alloy phase diagrams the solidus curves (temperatures at which liquid first appears upon melting) have not been located accurately, chiefly because the experimental techniques that have been most popular for determining solidus temperatures have been both cumbersome and subject to large errors. C. E. Homer and H. Plummer1 have described a sensitive and at the same time a very simple technique for locating the solidus curves in a number of alloys of tin. Their method consists simply in noting the temperature at which a specimen of the alloy ruptures under the influence of a light bending force. Although this method is not new, it has been little used for this purpose in the past; nevertheless, it appears so attractive in its possibilities of speed, simplicity, and precision that the investigations presently to be described were undertaken to verify its merits. The redetermination of the solidus and eutectic temperatures of the lead-antimony system was employed as a medium 0f experimentation. New values obtained in this way are believed to be sufficiently precise to warrant a revision of the currently accepted lead-antimony phase diagram (Fig. I). Determinations of the solidus of the lead-rich lead-antimony alloy series have been published by R. S. Dean2 and by E. E. Schumacher and F. C. Nix.3 Their points are represented in Fig. I. In their work the solidus was not located at antimony concentrations greater than 2 per cent; the curve was presumed to meet the eutectic horizontal at an antimony concentration of about 2.5 per cent. In the present studies the solidus has been traced to 3.5 per cent, where the eutectic horizontal is intersected (Table I and Fig. I). Within the range investigated by Dean and by Schumacher and Nix the agreement with their values is good. H. Seltz and B. De Witt,4 on the basis of activity measurements, have calculated that the intersection of the solidus and the eutectic reaction horizontal should lie at 3.86 per cent of antimony. The following determinations of the eutectic temperature have been reported: Roland-Gosselin,5 228°C.; Ewen,6 228°C.; J. E. Stead,7 247°C.; Campbell,8 228°C.; W. Gontermann,9 245° to 252°C.; R. Loebe,10 245°C.; E. Heyn and 0. Bauer,11 245°C.; H. Endo,12 250°C.; R. S. Dean,2 249° to 258°C.; E. Abel, 0. Redlich, and J. Adler,13 245°C.; W. Broniewski and L. Sliwowski,14 250° to 252°C.; H. Seltz and B. De Witt,4 250°C. A temperature of 249°C- appears to have been generally accepted in recent years; it is the value most frequently obtained by the method of cooling curves. Research has been conducted over the past three years using the composite anodes versus the lead alloy anodes. The Merrlin composite anodes have shown the improved performance in copper electrowinning versus the lead-calcium-tin anodes. Using the composite anodes a 100-150 mV reduction in anode overpotential has been observed versus the lead alloy anodes in sulfuric acid electrolyte. The composite coating has excellent corrosion inhibiting properties, and reduces or eliminates the formation of manganese oxide scale. Laboratory evidences indicate that, the use of these composite anodes enhances the process of electrowinning by improving the lead alloy corrosion resistance, lowers the electrode potential, reduces the need for cobalt addition, eliminates the anode cleaning, and reduces the generation of acid mist. Field tests are underway.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

The temperature entropy (T, S) chart? of thermodynamic properties of nitrogen herewith presented is a complete (1949) revision and a considerable extension of similar charts prepared by the author for use of the helium section of the Bureau of Mines about 25 years previously on the basis of inadequate data then obtaining. During the interval since that early effort, much experimentally determined information on nitrogen properties and behavior has been published, which now permits a more nearly accurate layout and more extensive charting of these relations.

DC arc furnaces are widely used for steel scrap melting as well as for reductive smelting of ore fines. Industrial smelting applications include the smelting of chromite to produce ferrochromium, the smelting of ilmenite to produce titania slag and pig iron, and the recovery of cobalt from nonferrous smelter slags. A number of myths and misconceptions are widely held, especially regarding: the age of the technology, the use of a hollow electrode, arc stability and shape, arc and bath radiation, interaction between the arc and molten slag, electrical behaviour of arcs and slags, a comparison between AC and DC furnaces, DC reactors, the lifespan of bottom electrodes, and the applicability of DC arc furnaces to various metallurgical systems.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation into the removal of gate road chain pillars in conjunction with longwall retreat mining. The research objective was to determine, through evaluations of the loads imposed on the gate road pillars and supplemental support elements in the entries, how the pillars, supplemental support, and entries were affected by the longwall abutment pressure. To achieve this goal, vibrating wire stressmeters and hydraulic flatjack pressure cells were installed in the support elements to monitor stress change caused by abutment pressure as a function of longwall face advance. The findings documented in this report are the result of information collected from instrumentation and observation at the mine. Pillar and support loading measurements and stability observations revealed that the roof and the sup- port elements remained stable during panel retreat, while the face progressed at a normal rate of advance. The ability to safely and efficiently mine chain pillars during panel retreat increases resource recovery and can provide several other benefits described in this report.

This paper talks about the experiences of groups we have worked with over the last few years in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) and the ways that they have worked to bridge the divide between traditional and introduced structures, governance at a regional level and the introduction of traditional values into monitoring and evaluation practices. In doing this these groups have created structures and processes which have helped them engage both more effectively with external stakeholders while maintaining the legitimacy of their own operations with their own constituents. These are important ideas for those involved in the mining industry that could provide a number of very tangible benefits to mining firms and their engagement with these kinds of groups.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.
