The importance of the recovery of precious metals, specifically platinum group metals, was recently expressed by Robert McNamara, former head of the World Bank, who stated that the United States should stockpile strategic metals. More than 90% of the platinum metals are imported into the United States from South Africa and Russia. Mr. McNamara's concern is based on the possibility of a disruption of obtaining these metals due to any racial unrest in South Africa and a renewal of the Cold War with Russia. The United States has a platinum mine from coast to coast. Since 1974, the automotive industry has consumed 3 million ounces of platinum and palladium, and the recovery of these metals from auto catalyst converters is estimated to be 300,000 ounces of platinum per year. This would make the United States the 4th largest producer in the world.

Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

ABSTRACT A diamond processing plant is being designed for the Star–Orion South diamond project in central Saskatchewan. Key to the plant is diamond liberation, which occurs in the comminution section and is the process of breaking up kimberlite rock as gently as possible to minimize diamond damage, particularly in larger, high-value diamonds. Kimberlite from the crater area of a volcanic pipe is generally softer than kimberlite from the diatreme zone. Softer kimberlite, comprising the majority of Star– Orion South deposits, can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition by autogenous grinding mills, the preferred comminution method for minimizing diamond damage.

MTU is conducting a study to recycle and reuse the aluminum waste generated from various segments of the aluminum smelting industry. This research is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and industry. A portion of this effort is to determine the operating efficiencies of Eddy Current Separation, comparing separating characteristics of white and black dross. The results of this effort will be presented here.

AT present the manufacture of metallic zinc, or spelter, in Missouri, is carried on only at the establishments located at Carondelet, or South St. Louis. Although the development of the industry has not yet reached that fulness which it has attained elsewhere in the United States, still the commanding advantages of position of these establishments are so evident that the prospective importance and magnitude of spelter manufacture in this State, and especially at this locality, can hardly be doubted. A study of the chemical and technical aspects of the business of these points cannot be without interest to the metallurgist as well as to the capitalist. I have endeavored to investigate, as far as was practicable, within the limits of a paper of this character, some of the problems connected with this industry, at the same time making a few comparisons of the results attained at some of the Carondelet works with those of other establishments with regard to which information could be obtained. In the prosecution of these studies I have been kindly aided by the managers of Carondelet establishments, and by Prof. Charles P. Williams, Director of Rolla School of Mines. To the latter I am especially indebted for assistance in regard to methods of analysis. To all these gentlemen I return my thanks for their valuable aid. IN the past quarter century the seismograph has played an increasingly important role in evaluating vibratory effects transmitted to adjacent communities by industrial blasting operations. In this period research has advanced through two major phases—from falling pin seismometers to three-component recording seismographs. The initial phase of this research is now regarded as the era of recording, during which the seismograph merely recorded occasional events. It has emerged from this stage into the era of control and analysis and in this later period has been recognized as a full-fledged industrial tool. Although the falling pin machines of earlier years indicated probable amplitudes of industrial blasting vibrations, they gave no reliable measure of such displacements, nor did they provide essential information concerning direction or frequency of motion. The first contribution of the three-component recording seismograph was the weight-for-distance formula developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This empirical formula enabled users of commercial explosives to determine beforehand the probable vibratory effects of a blast when the weight of the explosives charge and the distance from the shot point were known. This formula has withstood the test of time and is still applicable for blasts detonated by instantaneous methods. The second major contribution of the three-component recording seismograph followed the introduction in 1945 of short period or millisecond delay detonation. This might be described as a two-stage contribution, the first of which revealed a 50 pct reduction in the vibration magnitude when millisecond detonation was used rather than instantaneous discharge. This second part of this double contribution led to the discovery of the vibration dip phenomena, see Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 the horizontal coordinates indicate the displacements amplitude in inches, and the vertical coordinates, the explosive weight in pounds. The top curve is that of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for instantaneous detonation. Its curvature conforms to the two-thirds power of the explosive weight as provided in the weight-for-distance formula; hence the vibratory effects increase in proportion to an increase in the explosive charge. If the other curves shown below are temporarily disregarded, it may be considered that the entire area below this top curve represents both useful and waste energy. As mentioned previously, when millisecond delay detonation was first investigated it was found that in general the U. S. Bureau of Mines curve could be decreased by about 50 pct, or to the position of the middle curve. At the outset it was assumed that this curve would likewise increase in some proportion to the explosive charge, as did the top curve, that is, the curve would indicate a continuous upswing. "The initial metallurgical response of the lead flotation circuit at Cominco Alaska's Red Dog Mine was substantially below feasibility expectations. A program of diagnostic mineralogical analysis pointed the way to a number of process improvements, including simplification of the flow sheet and installation of a large flotation column as a lead cleaner. A diagnostic mineralogical analysis of the improved circuit shows that inadvertent activation of both sphalerite and pyrite has been substantially reduced, resulting in significant improvements in metallurgical performance. Directions for further improvements to the circuit performance are suggested by the recent analysis.IntroductionRed Dog is a high-grade, sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposit with relatively simple mineralogy. The primary non-sulphide gangue minerals are quartz and barite, with minor barium carbonate (witherite). The iron sulphate minerals, siderotil, rosenite and copiapite occur variably throughout the deposit. Mineral texture is variable ranging from liberated sphalerite grains visible to the naked eye to intergrowths, particularly between sphalerite and galena, to less than ten microns. Both pyrite and marcasite are present. To date no enhanced reactivity of marcasite has been observed. For this discussion, ""pyrite"" will be used to refer to both iron sulphide minerals. In common with other sedex deposits, Red Dog contains organic and sulphur impurities."

For the past ten years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps: 1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. 2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m /d. A pilot plant started operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop the processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and selective copper recovery from leach water. The principle of the biotechnological methods, full scale experience, and an overview of the test program at the copper mine are presented.

In an environment of accelerating capital costs, limited capital availability and strongly cyclic metal prices, there is a difference between a robust mining and processing operation and one that would maximise shareholder returns in an idealised world. A higher cut-off grade policy is likely to improve operating margins and may reduce the scale of operations and thus limit capital exposure. "During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."

Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

TO reach equilibrium between different phases in cobalt-rich alloys requires prohibitively long annealing cobalt-richalloystimes when temperatures are below about 700°C. The fact that a transformation from face-centered cubic to close-packed hexagonal readily tered takes place at temperatures below this in the cobalt-rich solid solutions is not an indication that thermally activated processes occur at an appreciable rate, for the transformation is well established as martensitic in nature. Wide divergence between heating and cooling experiments and high sensitivity to prior heat treatment make it difficult to judge temperatures of equilibrium between the phases.&apos; One object of the present work was to see if the information object of on the relative stability of phases could be gained by substituting plastic deformation for thermal agitation. Procedures were worked out that led to the determination of a diffusionless type of phase diagram, which represents the temperature of of phase equal stability for phases of the same composition, and the technique was applied to the Co-Ni system. Another object of the work was to see whether or not deformation would generate frequent stacking faults when these were thin lamellae of quentstackingfaultsa phase having higher free energy than the parent phase. The alloys were prepared in 80 to 100 g melts from cobalt (with metallic impurities estimated spectrochemically as follows: Ni, 0.05 pct; Fe, 0.001 pct.; Mg, Si, Cu, Cr, Al, < 0.001 pct) and Mond Car-bony1 nickel (with Fe, 0.05 pct; Si, 0.003 pct; C, 0.61 pct.; Cu, 0.001 pct; Co, Cr not detected, < 0.01 pct). The metals were melted in pure Al2O3 crucibles. An atmosphere of argon, that had been purified by passing over hot magnesium chips, was used for the alloys that, by analysis of the portions of the ingots actually used, were found to contain 15.3, 25.7, and 35.0 pct Ni, and vacuum melting (after degassing) was used for those containing 29.4 and 31.5 pct Ni. After induction melting the alloys were allowed to solidify in the crucible, and slices % in. thick x ½ in. in diam were annealed 12 hr at 1350°C for homogenization. These same specimens were used throughout the series of experiments, with annealing treatments of 4 hr at 900°C in purified hydrogen followed by furnace cooling, alternating with the deformation and X-ray tests discussed below. Results Spontaneous transformation was observed on cooling to room temperature in all alloys containing 29.4 pct Ni or less and by cooling the 31.5 pct alloy to — 195°C but was not observed in the 35 pct alloys after cooling to —195°C. These results are in satisfactory agreement with the cooling experiments of Masimoto.4 From these data it is clear that the temperature of beginning transformation M,,, drops to 20°C with the addition of about 30 pct Ni. The test for spontaneous transformation was metallographic. Specimens were thermally polished by annealing 10 hr in hydrogen at 1350°C, then furnace cooled; if trans- formation had occurred there were relief effects visible on the thermally polished surfaces. These markings were narrow straight lines, usually resolvable at high magnification as clusters of fine lines that resembled slip lines. It was concluded that they resulted from displacements on (111) planes, for the number of directions in individual grains often reached but never exceeded four, and lines could always be found parallel to the thermally etched (111) boundaries of annealing twins. The markings were thus consistent with the idea that the transformation occurs by (111) plane displacements (Shockley partial dislocations moving on (111) planes). This was further confirmed by X-ray tests for stacking disorders. Using an oscillating crystal technique previously employed to detect strain-induced faulting in Cu-Si alloys," streaks indicative of the stacking faults were looked for and found on X-ray films of the spontaneously transformed 25.7 pct Ni alloys, as expected by analogy with Edwards and Lipson&apos;s results on pure cobalt." The streaks were much intensified after rolling at room temperature. Transformation induced by plastic strain was investigated as a function of alloy composition and temperature of deformation. A series of tests was made to determine suitable straining and X-raying techniques. Filing was found inferior to abrasion in converting cubic samples to hexagonal, and abrasion was less effective than peening in producing smooth unspotty Debye rings in the X-ray patterns. Because the diffraction lines were broad, Geiger-counter spectrometer records of filings were less sensitive in revealing small amounts of transformed material than X-ray patterns recorded on films in a small diameter camera. After these exploratory tests the following methods were adopted. Specimens that had been annealed at least 4 hr at 900°C and furnace cooled were mounted in a block of aluminum, brought to temperature, and peened thoroughly with a mullite pestle preheated to the same temperature. The specimens were then quenched to room temperature. In peening, a circular area of % in. diam was given 500 blows. A few control tests showed that an additional 1000 blows did not detectably change the proportions of the phases present. The amount of transformation was judged by X-ray reflection patterns from the peened surface, using the innermost four lines of the cubic and the hexagonal patterns with filtered CoKa radiation,

THE chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 c.c. of a solution containing 495 mg. of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative proof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type [R+ + Y- + MX =± RX + M+ + Y¬] where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the massaction and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or Y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (1) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (2) the contact angles1 of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. Recently constructed circuits have included multiple stages of columns in a variety of applications, from roughing to cleaning. The Miduk copper concentrator (in south-eastern Iran) is one of the unique mineral processing plants which use column flotation cells as rougher. As the bulk of final concentrate is produced by rougher columns, optimized metallurgical performance of these cells is crucial. This paper will present the study and optimization of, a froth washing system of columns. For this purpose, the cross-sectional area of orifices was increased and their orientation altered. Concentrate assay for copper and silica, in addition to bias rate were found to be the assessment criteria. Modification of the wash water system resulted in increasing the purity of rougher and final concentrate. Negative bias and short-circuiting of wash water into the concentrate launder were the main causes of improper froth zone washing in the former system.

Daniel C. Jackling&apos;s innovative concept for handling low grade ores ushered in a new philosophy of open pit mining. As one of the greatest minemakers of all times he revolutionized major segments of the industry and helped strengthen US defense efforts during World Wars I and II by making possible the tremendous copper supplies from US mines. Many great mining men have since followed in his footsteps with their discoveries of new orebodies or development of new mines. Their brilliance in leadership can also be traced to the coupling of a new idea to the physical nature of the materials in the earth&apos;s crust or to the extractive stages of minerals recovery. The minerals industry is now in another era of change and must again devise techniques to meet the challenge. The task is not only to create new exploration techniques and develop new mining methods, but, I believe, to optimally apply new concepts and tools in daily decision-making.

Recycling of materials from lithium-oxyhalide batteries is a complex task, since the dismantling of batteries is associated with many hazards. The electrolyte and the lithium anode metal are extremely reactive in the presence of water or water vapor. Therefore, the dismantling process is a complex task. In this process, the lithium battery is electrically discharged, then frozen in liquid argon, and cut into small size pieces. These are fed into an incinerator, where the unreacted portion of lithium metal, thionyl chloride, plastic separators and carbon paste are decomposed and burned to gaseous products. The aluminum, iron (steel) and nickel pieces are recovered as saleable scrap metals. The off-gases are scrubbed with an alkaline sodium carbonate containing solution. The clean gases are released to the environment. The particulate mater recovered from the scrub-suspension would be available as additive to the cement industry . The recycling of battery decomposition products improves the economic viability of the disposal processes. Work is in progress to develop safe handling, processing and recycling large size lithium batteries.

In the present work, the influence of coagulant, polymeric flocculant structure type and mode of addition on flocculation performance and dewatering behaviour of plant mineral waste tailings of diverse mineralogy (kaolin, quartz, goethite/hematite feldspar, gibbsite, rutile, and Illite) is investigated. High molecular weight, non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer and anionic (acrylate) and cationic (quaternary acrylate) copolymers were used in orthokinetic flocculation of colloidal-ly-stable, aqueous dispersion of negatively charged particles. It is demonstrated that, through prudent selection and mode of addition of polymer structure types, synergistic effect between certain cationic and anionic flocculants can be readily achieved, leading to significantly improved dewaterability of the heterogeneous mineral waste tailings.
