Electrowinning of copper from chloride solutions in a diaphragm cell was studied by the Bureau of Mines. The copper powder product was shaken periodically from the cathode and removed from the bottom of the cell. The effects of copper concentration, brine concentration, copper chloride species, and cell voltage were investigated. Power consumption of 1.1 and 2.1 kW-hr/kg were obtained with cuprous and cupric chloride solutions, respectively.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. Coal pretreatment at the mine could eliminate all solids fuel handling

The application of remote sensing for environmental measurements is already being utilized. Aircraft mounted imaging spectroscopy has been utilized to evaluate areas of historical mining operations as well as active mine sites. To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective, and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions remain about the application and validation of the data and the availability of the technology in the private sector. This presentation will discuss some of the potential uses, benefits, and concerns related to remote sensing and efforts to monitor the technology's development.

"Aur Resources Inc. is the operator of the Louvicourt Mine located 40 km east of Val d'Or. Quebec. Les Entreprises Minieres Redpath Limitée a member of the 1.S. Redpath Group of companies was contracted to construct two vertical mine shaft collars in deep overburden.During the spring of1991 two vertical shaft collars were established in wet, running sand that was in excess of20 m deep. This paper will illustrate the engineering and construction techniques used in establishing these collars and the methods used to overcome the various obstacles that occurred during construction.IntroductionThe Louvicourt copper/zinc/gold/silver deposit is located 40 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec, is adjacent to the former Louvern Mine which operated at depths of 40 m to 850 m below surface (Fig. 1). This deposit was discovered in mid-1989 as the result of systematic exploration and diamond drilling based on a geological model. The Louvicourt project is operated by Aur Resources Inc.The property is being developed to produce 4000 tid with an anticipated life of just over 17 years. Mill start up is scheduled for July 1. 1994, commercial production October I, 1994, and full production by late 1995. The current production plan provides for 24 040 (XX) t averaging 3.89% copper, 1.95070 zinc, 0.039 oz gold per tonne and 0.99 oz silver per tonne, to be mined."

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

The flotation of quartz particles was studied over the particle size range from 0.5 µm to 1000 µm and for advancing water contact angles between 0º and 83º. Flotation was performed in a column and in a Rushton turbine cell. Particle contact angle threshold values, below which the particles could not be floated, were identified for the particle size range 0.5~1000 µm, under different hydrodynamic conditions. The flotation response of the particles, either in a column or in a mechanically agitated cell with a similar bubble size, was comparable. Turbulence plays a role, as does bubble-particle aggregate velocity and bubble size. The stability of the bubble-particle aggregate controls the maximum floatable particle size of coarse particles. For fine particles, the flotation limit is dictated by the energy required to rupture the intervening liquid film between the particle and bubble. Flotation of very fine and large particles is facilitated with small bubbles and high contact angles. These results greatly extend our earlier observations and theoretical predictions.

Power ultrasound may be applied to enhancing the processing of minerals. The enhanced performance is achieved through the very localised high-energy release at the mineral surface from the collapse of cavitation bubbles produced by power ultrasound. This gives rise to two effects: initially, the rapid cleaning of mineral surfaces û of oxidation products and coatings of fine adhering gangue minerals û and the attenuation of the boundary layer at the mineral surface during leaching, which allows fresh leachant to contact the surface more readily. Work carried out at CSIRO in conjunction with Tiwest Joint Venture has demonstrated that it is feasible to apply ultrasound to the leaching process in order to enhance the removal of contaminating minerals. When applied to the production of synthetic rutile from reduced ilmenite produced by the Becher process, the use of ultrasound proved beneficial to both the aeration and the final acid leach process. The effect of ultrasound was less marked in the case of the aeration process, once the method of introducing and dispersing the air was optimised. In the subsequent acid leaching step of the Becher process it was found that the application of power ultrasound could reduce leaching time to about one quarter of the time required when only agitation was employed. Projected capital and operating costs, based on currently available commercial equipment, are also presented, and indicate that the use of ultrasound is commercially as well as technically feasible.

The red, or fossiliferous, ore is found in the Clinton group of the Silurian formation. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama, and its outcrops have been mapped by the State or the U. S. Geological Survey. In some places, it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step faults bring up the ore in three or four practically parallel ridges. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. When examining the logs of holes drilled for oil, wherever the drill has gone deep enough, the writer has found the Clinton group underlying the Warrior coal field. The following records of holes drilled primarily for oil, given in Bull. No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of the Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 ft. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in sectioil 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton. Well NO. 3, called Frankford Well, was bored by S. A. Hobson and associates in the northwest quarter of section 7, township 6, range 12, Franklin County. At 927 ft., it is supposed to have entered the Clinton; the log is as follows: Ft. The combination of free standing steel supports, such as arches, and rock bolts (mixed support) has Frequently been in used in UK coal mine roadways when it is considered that the strata and/or environmental conditions would not be suitable for rock bolts solely. However, how such mixed support systems operate is not fully understood. Due to the differences in the support method provided by rock bolts and free standing steel, the total support generated is not simply a case of adding the contribution to the support of the roadway given by the two systems. This paper describes a numerical investigation into mixed support systems when used in coal mine roadways. A series of 2D and 3D geomechanical models are described and the method of modelling the rock bolts and steel supports in coal mine tunnels is discussed. The numerical models described include rock boltd only roadways, steel supported roadways and mixed supported roadways in a variety of geological and in-situ stress conditions. Conclusions are formed that allow an insight into mechanisms of strata reinforcement provided by the support systems modelled. Further to this, a review of the numerical modelling of pre-tensioned rock bolted systems is described identifying the contribution to support efficiency given by the adoption of tensioning in full column resin anchors. The results obtained highlight that the effectiveness of the pre-tensioned load is dependant on the rock mass quality and in- situ stress level at the site where it is to be used.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

IN modern practice the major portion of an ore is reduced to flotation size by fine grinding. As the result of grinding fine enough to liberate most of the minerals, a substantial portion (generally 5 to 15 per cent) of the ore is inadvertently reduced to a size much finer than that necessary for liberation. This portion of most flotation pulps is very refractory to recovery by flotation. A reduction of one-quarter or more in recovery in this range of extremely fine particles can be observed. The loss in metals caused by overgrinding is appreciable. That this loss is characteristic of very fine particles has been suspected for some time;(l)† however, it was definitely quantified only recently.(2) Definite reduction in float-ability with reduction in particle size beyond a critical size of maximum floatability can be accepted now as an established fact. Formulating the Hypothesis In looking for the cause of the ill behavior of the finest particles it may be well to consider the essential differences between fine and coarse particles. A difference that immediately comes to mind is their intrinsic difference in size and consequently in relative extent of surface. If one agrees that attachment of mineral particles to bubbles must follow direct encounter of particles with bubbles one is forced to conclude(3) that the probability of encounter between a mineral particle and a bubble varies directly as the size of the particle, provided the particle is small compared to the bubble. In other words, the finer the particle the poorer its chance of being recovered in a given time of flotation. There is an effect, implicit in this theory, which should overcome the effect of excessive fineness of the particles; namely, flocculation of the particles. The floccules can be conceived as being simply larger particles and therefore capable of becoming attached to bubbles. And, indeed, in all the cases in which a sulfide mineral of near-colloidal size was successfully floated the mineral (but not necessarily the gangue) was flocculated. "Two modified centrifugal flotation cells (CFC), Q2 and Q3 models, have been developed for froth flotation. The operating mechanism of Q2 uses a rotating bowl to create a centrifugal force on the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate is collected on the central top of the cell and tailing is discharged along the top edge of the rotating bowl. The Q3 utilizes a vertical rotating feed pipe to introduce the feed slurry into a stationary flotation column cell. A centrifugal force is also created by a rotating pipe for the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate floats over the cell and tailing discharges through the bottom of the cell. The centrifugal force causes the flotation recovery of fine particles from CFC to be higher than from the conventional cell. The major operating variables of CFC are the rotating speed, air flow rate into feed slurry, and slurry feeding rate etc. Flotation tests have been carried out on synthetic mixtures of galena-silica and chalcopyrite-silica, as well as some natural base metal ore samples. Parallel tests were also conducted on a conventional flotation cell. The comparative test results demonstrated that both Q2 and Q3 have the advantage of higher recovery of finer than 10 µm mineral particles, which are very difficult for the conventional non-centrifugal flotation cell to recover. The grade-recovery curves produced from CFC are equivalent to or better than the conventional flotation cell. There is a potential in the future for the CFC to be employed in slime flotation.1. IntroductionA centrifugal flotation cell (CFC) was originally developed by Clean Earth Technologies [I] to separate oil from water and was subsequently applied in froth flotation. Figure 1 illustrates the design of the original CFC, in which a vertical feeding pipe is attached to the center part of a rotating drum and a stationary shell encloses it to direct the float froth and tailing discharge. The slurry flows down to the bottom of the spinning drum, gets in touch with a screen of air bubbles and then migrates outwards under the effect of centrifugal force. After the mineralized froth enters the rotating cell, it is pushed back to the inner surface. The overflowing froth is collected in the froth launder while the tailing slurry is discharged through orifices along the outer rim of the drum."

This paper describes a separation coefficient Ks useful as a "measure of goodness" to be used in factorial and response surface methodology. The use and limitations of the separation coefficient is discussed, and a computer program for calculating the coefficient is presented (in Fortran). The application of the coefficient is illustrated in terms of electro-dynamic separation of Mesabi semitaconites. Present Mesabi wash ores and gravity concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of only 5 or 6 to 1 are no longer readily salable, for the steel industry now demands concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of at least 10 to 1 and a structure comparable to pellets. THE ELECTRODYNAMIC-FLOTATION PROCESS Wash ores and gravity concentrates consist largely of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Several methods of beneficiation are being tested at the University of Minnesota Mines Experiment Station with a view to improving the salability of these materials. A process that looks particularly promising from an economic view is the combination electrodynamic-flotation process shown in Fig. 1. This process is designed to upgrade gravity concentrates to a 5% silica content and to provide fines — from the flotation circuit —to permit agglomeration. Although electrodynamic concentration of specularite is an established and well-understood process, the electrodynamic concentration of Mesabi goethite-hematite gravity concentrates presents interesting and enigmatic problems. The gravity concentrates are by no means assemblages of clean, free mineral particles. Instead, the concentrates to be retreated consist of a great variety of middlings. More or less complete liberation would require grinding to minus 325 mesh, at which size only flotation could be expected to function, and even then grades and especially recoveries would not be satisfactory. A close examination of the gravity concentrates shows that grinding to 100% minus 48 mesh will produce a product which is approximately 70 weight % plus 325 mesh (see Fig. 1). Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

Cyclic voltammetry, potential step, and ac impedance techniques were applied to study the electrochemical reaction of arsenopyrite in chloride solutions. The relationship between anodic current density and time in potential step measurements indicates that the oxidation of arsenopyrite is irreversible. The results of the constant potential coulometry show that the stoichiometric factor of the total electron involved in the overall reaction is 14. It is proposed that the dissolution of arsenopyrite is retarded by coverage of sulfur produced in the reaction as an intermediate product. The measured results of ac impedance strongly support the proposition. The proposed reaction mechanism also explains satisfactorily the charging current density and Tafel slopes measured in potential step measurements.

The past fifteen years have seen a number of important developments in copper hydrometallurgy, including the commercial application of biological heap leaching of secondary (chalcocite-dominant) copper ores, the commercial demonstration of chalcopyrite concentrate leaching technology using pressure leaching and biological processes, and the application of novel configurations of solution extraction circuits. Significant emphasis is now being placed on the development of effective stockpile leaching practices for primary ores (chalcopyrite and bornite-dominant mineralization). Some of these developments have been highly successful, and will pave the way for further development and commercialization. Others have been less successful. These developments are reviewed in the context of the metal price cycle and trends for the future are identified.

PENG, WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY] Immediately after coal extraction, the pressure that causes the movement of the surrounding strata is called mine pressure. Through the strata movement, certain features such as supports taking load arise. This is called "manifestation of mine pressure". The existence of mine pressure is ab¬solute whereas its manifestation is relative and conditional. The visible movement of the surrounding strata occurs only when the applied pressure exceeds the plastic breaking strength. Me support begins to take load only when it offers resistance to the strata movement. The key to investigating mine pressure and its control hinges on understanding the rules and conditions for the manifestation of mine pressure. Since the face moves continuously, the mine pressure and its manifestations are also constantly changing. 'Therefore, it should not only emphasize to obtain its instantaneous magnitude, but more importantly the rules of development changes and their relations to the movement of overlying strata. Once this is resolved, one can estimate the movement of the overlying strata through mani¬festation of mine pressure and predict the time and magnitude of incoming roof weighting. Consequently the location and timing of rib excavation can be correctly selected and thus solve several major problems in the design of mining operation.

The specifications for bridge-steel are usually not severe. The main difficulty is to secure a material which will roll easily, without showing signs of cracking on the corners of the blooms or on the flanges of the beams. In many mills sulphur has been deemed the most harmful constituent in this respect. It has been thought hazardous.to roll steel containing over 0.07 per cent. of sulphur. Yet, in making steel for the Phoenix Iron Company, I have produced from stock running as high as 0.13 per cent. of sulphur a material which rolled very satisfactorily. It is reasonable to infer that the injurious effect of sulphur can be neutralized, to a great extent, by proper treatment in the open-hearth furnace; and the following notes from my usual practice here may be of interest to those obliged to use high-sulphur stock. The steel made at Phoenixville in the 20-ton furnaces has about the following composition : Per cent. Carbon,...0.15 to 0.20 Manganese,.........0.50 to 0.60 Sulphur,..........0.11 to 0.13 Phosphorus,.: .0.04 to 0.06 Silicon,.......... 0.01 to 0.02 The best running heats were made with a small amount of pigiron. In using large proportions of pig the quantity of ore is also increased. This not only cuts the bottom, but also lengthens the time required to bring the charge down. Up to 50 per cent. of pig may be used, but 25 per cent. is much better. A 40,000-pound charge, containing 10,000 pounds of pig and 30,000 pounds of Bessemer butts or beam-scrap, works very well.

Current methods of hydrogen storage are an impediment to the transition of our energy infrastructure from a hydrocarbon to a hydrogen base. The transportation, handling, and storage costs of hydrogen gas account for a majority of its selling price. Magnesium hydride slurry is a safe, environmentally friendly alternative for hydrogen storage. If this form of storage is to be adopted on a large scale, a cost-effective method for recycling the enormous amounts of magnesium hydroxide byproduct must be identified. The solid oxide membrane (SOM) process can be used to recycle the magnesium hydroxide byproduct into magnesium metal, which can be reformed into magnesium hydride and reused for fuel storage. Conventional magnesium extraction/recycling technologies require a great deal of energy and create byproducts that are harmful to the environment and human health. The SOM process poses none of these detrimental effects and requires less energy and feed preparation. The economic viability of a facility that utilizes the solid oxide membrane process for the direct reduction of magnesium must be examined in more detail if industry is to consider it. Cost analysis data related to the commercial viability of a scale-up will be compared to two standard industrial processes: current magnesium production techniques including electrolytic and metallo-thermic processes. We have shown in our cost comparison that the SOM process is cheaper than these traditional techniques and that it is also comparable to aluminum's Hall-Héroult process in cost but with none of the environmentally harmful byproducts.
