The Black Mesa coal field is part of the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservation in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. The field is in an isolated area with the nearest railroad 70 to 90 miles to the south. Travel is restricted by roads that become impassable during inclement weather. The area is a mesa and rises from 500 to 2,000 feet above the surrounding territory. Water is very scarce, and the nearest stream of any consequence is the Colorado River about 90 miles northwest from the center of the field. Coal beds are found in the Mesaverde formation of the Cretaceous age, but they are uncorrelated and range from subbituminous to bituminous in rank. Huddle2/ estimates the reserves of subbituminous coal in Arizona at about 15 billion tons, most of which is in the Black Mesa field. The geology of the field has been reported by Campbell and Gregory.3/ Coal production is small, and the output is used almost exclusively for domestic fuel in the Indian schools, missions, and trading posts.

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. The temperature and strain rate dependence of the flow stress ratio and the stvain rate dependence qi the flow stress of annealed polycrystalline a zirconiur were determined over the temperature range 30 0" to 1000°K. Some evidence was found for strain aging and discontinuous flow in the temperature ranges 520" to 650°Kand650" to 760°K, respectively. The Cottvell-Stokes relationship was obtained when deformation occurred by twinning as well as slip. The flow stress ratio showed a strong dependence on temperature and strain rate above 800°K. The expevirnental evidence indicated that the rate-controllitzg mechanism for the deformation of a zirconium above 800°K was dislocation climb, and that the deformation was not thermally activated in the range 520" to 800°K. The stacking-fault energy of a zirconium was estimated to be about 250 ergs per sq cm. A knowledge of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the applied stress necessary to deform a crystalline solid is essential for understanding the thermally activated processes occurring during deformation.' Several experimental techniques have been developed for studying these processes.273 One of the techniques is the deter mi nation of the strain rate dependence of the flow stress at constant temperature. In close-packed crystals, it has often been observed that the change in stress due to a change in the strain rate varies linearly with the flow stress, (~1,' This relationship, known as the Cottre ll-Stokes law, is obeyed when deformation occurs by glide alone. However, when deformation occurs by twinning as well as glide, there is disagreement among different investigators on whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is observed. Whereas Thornton et ~1.~find departures from Cottrell-Stokes law when twinning occurs in copper, ~avis~ and sasinski? find that Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip in cadmium and magnesium, respectively. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip. The Glacier View RARE Ii further planning area contains no identified mineral deposits, other than stone, which cannot compete favorably with similar deposits closer to major markets. Pierce County mining claim records show six coal claims were located in the study area between 190b and 1907; however, no coal was found at the described locations. Two coal prospects, the H.O. Lamming and Floyd Rice, are within 0.5 mi (0.8 km) of the area's west boundary (fig. 1). At these prospects, impure bituminous coal beds strike approximately north and dip east toward the study area. Analyses of samples 1/ indicated an average heating value of 2,767 BTU 2/ per pound (6,436 joules per kg). Because of the low heat value, this coal is subeconomic. Intense folding and faulting which disrupted the beds would limit the use of conventional coal mining equipment, making future economic development even less likely. Trinity Resources of Houston, Texas has leased approximately 1,404 acres (568 ha) inside the study area and an additional 1,020 acres (413 ha) adjacent to the study area for oil and gas exploration. However, no oil or gas wells are known to have been drilled in or around the study area.

Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the con¬ventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within the U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oil-or bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If one compares the sum of past oil production and estimated remaining producible reserves with the API estimate of total discovered OOIP as of 1975, it becomes apparent that for the U.S. as a whole, 67% of the OOIP will remain in place at the end of the

Hoover as Chairman of the newly established Food Board. This is n, problem of first importance. Few realize the extent to which American food stuffs will enter into the decision of the war, and it is doubtful if it has occurred to many minds as yet that we shall have to deny ourselves what we have regarded as necessaries in order to keep our European allies supplied. " Mr. Hoover is one of the leading mining engineers of the country. At the outbreak of the war he put his private affairs aside to become the head of the American Commission for Relief in Belgium. He has had an experience that perhaps no other man has ever had, covering the raising of money and the purchase and distribution of supplies on a large scale; He has been brought into close relations with the neutrals and the belligerents on both sides. By them all he is recognized is one of the best executives brought to the fore by the mar. Mr. Hoover is in a position now to place abilities and experience at the service of his country. He will come back with comparative data that will enable him to measure resources and deficiencies accurately. This appointment gives renewed assurance of our Government's grasp of the problems of war and its resolve to apply, business principles to their solution."

The formation of oxides during the dehydration of MgC12,6H20, Bischofite, was studied by heating the bischofite over a range of time and temperatures in ambient atmosphere. Using a methanol-leaching technique developed by authors, the oxides that formed were isolated, identified and assayed. Three distinct regions of oxide stability were identified. The oxide produced at dehydration temperatures less than 300 °C was Mg2(OH)3C1,2H2O; at 300 °C, mixtures of MgOHC1 and Mg2(OH)3C1.2H2O were formed and at 400 °C, MgOHC1 was the only oxide produced. The presence of MgO observed in the products of the dehydration of bischofite at temperatures above 400 °C was due to the thermal decomposition of the MgOHC1 that was formed while the sample was heating to over 400 °C.

Airborne geochemistry became a reality with the advent of a high-sensitivity air¬borne gamma ray spectrometer with large volume NAI(Tl) crystal detectors. The high-sensitivity spectrometer measures small variations in the concentration of potassium (as Ks°), thorium (as Tl308) and uranium (as Bi.214) along the flight lines in the area surveyed. Hydrothermal dispersion patterns are indicated by anomalous measured values of the concentrations of potassium, thorium, uranium, or their ratios. In two recent Australian survey areas, copper mineralization was located along favorable structures within hydrothermal dispersion patterns delineated by airborne geochemical surveys. In metamorphic terrane where there had been po¬tassium metasomatism, the hydrothermal dispersion patterns were indicated by high potassium/uranium ratios (K40/Bi). In a sedimentary environment that had been intruded by a stock, the path of hydrothermal fluids was indicated by uranium (Bi214), thorium (TV'), and uranium/ thorium (Bi214/Tl208) ratios.

"The efficient separation and storage of CO2 from power plant flue gases can reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere and mitigate global warming. Potential candidates for industrial applications are solid sorbent materials. Crucial factors to control the efficiency of porous sorbent materials include the framework and pore structure, and the chemical and physical reactivity of CO2 within the pores. Computational modeling approaches, based on density functional theory (DFT) and van der Waals-DFT, have been applied to nanoporous solid – manganese dioxide a-MnO2. We found that the types and charges of cations as dopants in the a-MnO2 and the concentration of CO2 influence the structural features of a-MnO2, which control its CO2 selectivity performance within the flue gases.IntroductionCarbon capture and storage is a technique to separate large quantities of CO2 from power plant flue gases before being released into the atmosphere. Porous solids are a potential candidate as sorbents to “trap” CO2 through chemical or physical adsorption on their porous surfaces[1]. Such separation efficiency is determined by the size and shape of its pores and by the interaction between the porous surface and the gas adsorbates. The incorporation of cations into the pore can act as a means of structural support and alter the pore diameter to be comparable to the kinetic diameter of the gas adsorbate, such as CO2.A porous solid of particular interest for CCS is manganese dioxide a-MnO2, an octahedral molecular sieve (OMS) composed of edge-sharing MnO6 octahedra that are linked into a nanoporous framework[2]. The framework consists of (1×1) and (2×2) tunnels, referred to as OMS-2. Due to the larger tunnel size, cations and gas adsorbates prefer to reside along the (2×2) tunnel axis of the OMS-2. As seen in Figure 1, a potassium cation K+ is located in the (2×2) tunnel, known as cryptomelane-type MnO2. Its pore diameter of ~ 4.6 Å gives it a good CO2 selectivity performance, because the diameter is comparable to the kinetic diameter of 3.3 Å for CO2[3]. Alternatively, replacing potassium K+ with other cations, e.g. barium Ba2+, sodium Na+ or lithium Li+, in the OMS-2 tunnel is of great research interest, due to the effects of their concentrations, types and charges on the CO2 selectivity efficiency and sorption hysteresis phenomenon[2,4]."

"Discrete-element method (DEM) modelling is a powerful tool for studying particulate systems within the mineral processing industry. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the power draw, load behaviour, and impact energy profile of an experimental ball mill under different milling conditions. The variables considered were mill rotational speed (percent critical speed), ball size, and lifter face angle. The simulation results indicated that the grinding efficiency would be enhanced by using 80% critical speed, 30 mm ball diameter, and 45° lifter face angle. These findings can be useful in guiding actual ball milling tests involving an ore sample.RÉSUMÉ La modélisation par méthode des éléments distincts (MED) est un outil puissant qui permet d’étudier les systèmes particulaires au sein de l’industrie de traitement des minerais. Des simulations par MED ont été menées de façon à étudier le profil de la consommation énergétique, du comportement de la charge et de l’énergie de rupture d’un broyeur à boulets expérimental dans diverses conditions de broyage. Ball mills are able to reduce particle size over a relatively wide range of particle sizes. This explains their wide applicability in research laboratories and the mineral processing industry."

In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

INTRODUCTION The Miller chlorination process has assumed a preeminent position in the refining of gold bullion, a position it has maintained for over half a century. In the early sixties considerable interest was aroused by the idea of producing a consistently high grade bullion at the mine smelthouses themselves. However, as the use of chlorine in industrial plants is associated with considerable hazards, oxygen was considered a natural alternative, apart from bing less expensive than chlorine. Partial refining at the mine smelthouses would considerably decrease the requirements made on Rand Refinery Limited as well as indicating the possibility of reducing final refining costs. An added factor would be the purer silver chloride obtainable, after prior removal of the base metals by oxygen injection, which would facilitate the production of high-purity silver. The free energies of formation of the oxides of the metals;- silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron and bismuth indicate that, with the exception of silver, these metals should be capable of removal as oxides by oxygen injection. Rose1 had shown that during injection of gold bullion, considerable loss of silver to the boraxsilver slag occurred and, furthermore, that copper removal was not efficient and oxide attack on the refractories was severe. Plant test work2 had confirmed the difficulty of copper removal, but had shown that zinc and lead were almost completely removed. The difficulty of copper removal by oxygen injection warranted further investigation. Also, the high decomposition pressure of silver oxide suggested that by suitable control of the slag composition it might be possible to reduce to very small proportions the silver carried into the slag as oxide. The oxidation of copper by oxygen injection and subsequent dissolution of the oxide in a slag may occur according to the following reactions; Reactions 4 and 5 were considered because of the relatively high solubility of oxygen in molten silver and silver alloys. Thermodynamic data indicate that there is little possibility of any reaction involving the formation of CuO occurring at temperatures above 1 000 °C. To ensure that the operative reactions 1 and 4 take place to the maximum extent, the following factors He significant. (a) an increase in the activity of the copper in the bullion, (b) an increase in the partial pressure of oxygen in the system, (c) an increase in the activity of the oxygen in solution in the metal, (d) a decrease in the activity of cuprous oxide in the slag. From practical considerations, the operative variable most easily susceptible to control is the composition of the slag. SOLUBILITY OF COPPER OXIDES IN BOROSILICATE SLAGS Very scanty information exists on systems containing copper oxides but the indications are that slags containing considerable amounts of boric oxide would possibly prove to be the best solvents for cuprous and cupric oxides. This is attributed to the fact that the activities of copper oxides are much lower in boric oxide slags than in slags in which silica is the main network former. The number of possible slags containing boric oxide was limited by consideration of liquidus temperature, viscosity, corrosive action on refractories, volatilization, and ultimately cost (for industrial application). Slags in the systems soda-boric oxide-silica and lime-boric oxide-silica were selected paying due attention to the above limitations. Additions of 5, 10 and 15 per cent cupric oxide were made to the finely ground, premelted slags. These mixtures were then reground and 2g quantities held in re crystallized alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1150°C and 1 250°C respectively for 30 minutes. The crucibles were removed from the furnace, rapidly cooled, cut in half longitudinally, and a thin section taken from one half was subjected to microscopic examination.

Domestic bauxite used in aluminum production comes from Arkansas where syenite was lateritized forming bauxite. Part of the residual bauxite and kaolinized syenite were eroded, deposited downdip, lateritized with bauxite formed in place, and covered by sediments. The unconsolidated overburden causes problems in mining. Bauxite for refractories and chemicals comes from Alabama and Georgia. Sediments were deposited in karst lakes and were lateritized forming bauxite and kaolin. Ferruginous bauxite in Washington, Oregon and Hawaii, derived from weathered basalt, can be used in aluminum production.

Roll crushers had been used in the past ahead of existing milling systems in order to obtain additional production from such mills in both the mining and the cement industries. Historically, a roll crusher as a preliminator to a ball mill has been used for a number of industrial mineral applications. Flowsheets, from Taggars(1) show systems for fluorspar, graphite, lead and zinc to name a few, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4. These units applied, (in some cases still in service), prior to 1950 and as early as the 1920's, were of two general types, rigid rolls and spring rolls. The rigid rolls were phased out in favor of the spring rolls. The spring force related to the linear inch width of the rolls, ranged from 500 to 50,000 lbs/linear inch(1) on units up to 90" diameter. With choke feeding, the rolls were spread against the spring force during crushing keeping the system under high pressure to obtain high effectiveness.

Mercurian e1ectrum (Au-Ag-Hg alloy) is the principal Au-bearing phase in the massive sulphide ores at Trout Lake, Manitoba. The average composition of this phase (in wt %) is 49.2 % Ag. 38.7 % Au and 11.0 % Hg, with ranges of 17.34 to 76.47 % Ag, 1.62 to 79.86 % Au and 1.29 to 30.87 % Hg. Compositional variation reflects solid solution in the a-phase of the Ag-Au-Hg system. Backscatter electron imagery reveals systematic zoning and suggests a general crystallization sequence from metamorphic pore fluids of progressively Ag-rich compositions. Investigation of the occurrence of gold in mill products demonstrates that mercurian electrum accounts for over 90 % of the Au in Trout Lake ore. I Invisible" gold in pyrite (x = 0.72 ppm Au) and arsenopyrite (x 30.2 ppm Au) is confirmed by SIMS analyses, and accounts for 7-10 % of the Au in the ore, and 35 % of the Au lost to the tailings. The remaining 65 % of the Au lost to the tailings consists principally of mercurian electrum locked with pyrite. No significant losses of mercurian electrum in the size range amenable to flotation and/or regrinding is indicated.

This paper describes recent development work on the Wheaton-Najarian Vacuum Condenser for Zinc at Josephtown Zinc Smelter, wherein, to dissipate the heat of condensation, the "airlift" action of gases bubbling through the molten zinc in the condenser is utilized to circulate the zinc through an outside "cooling well" and cooling it continuously. AN earlier paper1 gave an account of initial development of the Wheaton-Najarian Vacuum Zinc Condenser at the Josephtown Zinc Smelter of the author's company. This paper is a progress report of further development work over the years directed toward improving the efficiency and increasing the capacity of the condenser. In this type of zinc condenser, zinc vapor with accompanying noncondensable gases from electro-thermic zinc smelting furnaces is passed upwardly through a mass of molten zinc confined in a refractory-lined U-tube. The zinc vapor condenses in the molten zinc and the noncondensable gases are drawn out of the condenser by suction applied over the surface of the molten zinc. The heat of condensation of zinc, amounting roughly to 1000 Btu per lb of zinc condensed, is absorbed by the molten zinc and, in turn, is dissipated continuously to keep the temperature of molten zinc in a range to permit effective condensation. At the time of publication of our first paper, we had at Josephtown Smelter five units of 69-in.-bore metal furnaces and one larger metal furnace having 96-in. bore. Each 69-in. metal furnace had a condenser with 22-ft overall length. The 96-in.-bore furnace had a condenser with overall length of 31 ft. Condensers were of circular cross section, with corrugated steel outer shell and carborundum lining. Diameter of these condensers was 32 in. inside the refractory lining. Molten metal in the con- denser was kept cool by spraying cold water on the outside of the condenser shell. Under good operating conditions, 22-ft condensers produced some 12 tons of metal per day; and the 31-ft condenser, about 22 tons. When the furnaces produced zinc vapor at higher rates, invariably the condenser temperature would rise to levels where excessive blue powder would form and accumulation of accretions in the condenser would be accelerated. We found that, with the system of cooling in use, we had to provide heat-exchange surface of some 150 sq ft to condense 1000 lb of metal per hr with reasonable efficiency. The wall of the condensers was made up of 5/8-in.-thick corrugated-steel shell having next to it several layers of mica and inner refractory lining of special carborundum shapes to fit the corrugation in the steel shell, and having a minimum thickness of about 2 in. Relatively low rate of heat transfer through the thick condenser wall and slow internal circulation of the molten zinc limited the rate of heat exchange between hot metal within the condenser and the cold water flowing over the outer steel shell. The thickness of the condenser wall was about minimum that we considered suitable for continuous operation. As we learned to operate the electrothermic furnaces with higher power input, producing zinc vapor at higher rates, it became apparent that we needed condensers having larger heat-exchange surfaces. Our 96-in.-bore furnace had 6 single-phase power circuits with transformers rated at 500 kva each and normally good for power input of 3000 kw.
