During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

"A recent critical study by Ralston3 of the iron system points out the importance of and necessity for work upon the preparation of ferrous oxide. Not only are ferrous oxide samples desired for determination of the important physical and chemical properties, such as specific heats and heats of formation, bat also information on the stability and behavior of this material is of considerable technical importance. Related. problems where the properties of Fe0 are important have to do with desulphurization of iron, the formation and occurrence of magnetite in copper smelter slags, and sulphur elimination in copperFerrous oxide also has valuable catalytic properties, as is demonstrated in nitrogen fixation.Pure ferrous oxide has never been prepared in quantities large enough to furnish adequate physical and chemical data on its properties. Only two or three experiments4 have produced a fraction of a gram in a state approximating purity and have collected evidence that has been sufficient proof of their having done so. Ferrous oxide is stable only above about 570°C., and below that splits into magnetite and iron according to the reactionUp to about 1920, those who had endeavored to prepare FeO made no provision for rapid chilling, so that although their product. may have had the proper iron oxygen ratio for FeO, in reality it-probably did not consist of pure FeO. The above reaction is reversible; above 570oC. magnetite and iron are supposed to recombine almost completely, and if so, should constitute a direct and easy method of preparation. The data, however, were somewhat conflicting, and the extent to which the reaction goes in either direction needed checking. Preliminary experiments on the interaction of molten Fe304 with solid Fe gave Fe0 of about 85 per cent purity, corresponding to. the approximate purity obtained by some previous investigators. The present work is concerned chiefly with the results cf repeated interaction between partly reduced magnetite and iron, and the calculations which may be made from such results. Repeated treatments are necessary, because molten impure ferrous oxide and iron can not be kept in contact for more than short periods of time."

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. 'An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

The cost benefits of controlling dilution of extracted ore have been very well understood by miners and mining professionals for many years. However, as we strive towards more mechanization, the dilution factor has been compromised in order to fit ?equipment? that is better suited to provide improved safety and productivity. Alternately, the drilling and ground support is accomplished by handheld drilling. In 2007, a short study, commissioned by CAMIRO (Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization) on the safety of hand held drilling vs. mechanized drilling, concluded that the risk of injury with handheld drills was seven times greater than with mechanized drills. Armed with this data, MEDATech Engineering proposed to the CAMIRO group to fund development of a ?MICRO Bolter?.

To estimate the detailed characteristics of the rock around the cavern during excavation, new monitoring technique for dynamic properties of the rock has been applied. In this paper, micro-seismic monitoring and AE monitoring technique are applied to the excavation of large underground rock cavern and the result was discussed to clarify the acutal behavior of EDZ around the cavern. Zur Einschätzung der Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum haben die Autoren eine Technik eingesetzt, mit der die physikalischen und dynamischen Änderungen im Gestein um den Schacht während der Ausschachtung beobachtet werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde zur mikroseismischen Überwachung ein AE Überwachungsverfahren eingesetzt und die Autoren berichten über die Veränderungen in den Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum. Dans le but d'évaluer en détail les propriétés des roches qui forment les parois des cavernes creusées, les auteurs ont utilisé une technique de mesure permettant d’observer les modifications physico-dynamiques des roches aux alentours de la caverne pendant son excavation. Dans le cadre de cet article, une technique de surveillance de l’agitation et du bruit microséismiques a été mise en œuvre et les auteurs font état de la modification des propriétés de la roche environnante.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Cemented fill was first introduced at the Keretti mine in 1952, but entailed high cement costs, the need for stope preparation, slimes handling, clean-up and maintenance, increased mine dewatering, segregation of fill and long setting times. In the 1970s research began into the use of iron blast-furnace slag as a binding agent and by 1989 Pyhasalmi, Vihanti, Keretti, Vammala and Enonkoski had saved US $11 000 000 by using slag binders instead of cement. Viscaria in Sweden and Tara in Ireland also use slag as 90-100% of total binder, although their backfilling methods vary. The main area of interest in slag research is determining the activation methods for initiating the binding reactions; it is also important to achieve other characteristics such as resistance to corrosion by sulphuric ion. New backfilling techniques developed during the 1980s included the use of high-density cemented tailings fill at Vammala and porous cemented rockfill at Enonkoski and Viscaria. Future developments focus on concepts such as integration of mining and milling with backfilling and the achievement of total underground disposal of wastes

The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. A year after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and replaced President Amin with their choice, President Karmal, Afghanistan remained in turmoil. In some respects, the political and economic situation in Afghanistan was no better by the end of 1980 than it was preceding the December 1979 invasion. The Government faced widespread and growing alienation and resistance, virulent factionalism within the ruling party, and an acute shortage of material. The mining sector of the country did not fare better either; the only raw material produced in a significant amount was natural gas, which was exported mainly to the Soviet Union. No statistics on production of other minerals and materials were available by yearend. Most of Afghanistan's gas production was from the Hodja-Gugerdag Field, southeast of Shibarghan. The gas flow from this field had been about 300 million cubic feet per day since 1961. An estimated 230 to 250 million cubic feet per day of Hodja-Gugerdag's production was moved by pipeline across the Amu-Darya River into the Soviet Union. Most of the remainder was transmitted eastward to a 105,000-ton-per-year fertilizer plant and an electric power station built near Mazar-i-Sharif with Soviet assistance. After the Soviet invasion, the second gasfield, Djar-Kuduk, in the Shibarghan area, was brought under production. This field, which will produce about 200 million cubic feet per day, consists of four gas zones in the Jurassic and lower Cretaceous zones between 3,000 and 8.500 feet deep. The gas has a high hydrogen sulfide content, with considerable carbon dioxide, A new treatment plant was built at Djar-Kuduk by Soviet technicians under a turnkey contract at the end of 1980. It is believed that most of the Djar-Kuduk's initial flow will be sent to the Soviet Union.

In the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inby the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outby that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inby and outby the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outby the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inby the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

In order to continue improving the quality of telecommunication services to meet the expectations of the people and to increase reliability in the case of emergency such as disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) is now constructing cable tunnels which connect main urban telephone offices. However, almost all the large cities in Japan are built in river deltas, so that their chief underground features are low strength fluvial deposit and a high ground water level. In this saturated soft ground, the ground surface at an installation site has occasionally subsided through deep excavations for cable tunneling construction. As these settlements have sometimes caused accidents, especially in densely populated large cities, NTT has made much effort to avoid such accidents. These accidents have occured mainly in flexible sheeting due to its inward movement. Therefore, after the investigation into forecast method of sheeting deflection with accuracy, NTT has reserched a system which forecasts ground surface settlements. This paper describes an outline of the ground settlement forecast system and practical example on the site.

This paper describes the objectives and the procedures involved in short-term mine planning, comments on the type of computer systems available, and describes in detail a computer-aided short-term planning and scheduling system known as STEPS.IntroductionThe mine planning department of any o pen-pit mining operation performs a wide variety of different tasks. However, their primary concern is the preparation of detailed long-and short-term mine plans. These mine plan s will define the long-term operating strategies and definitive everyday working plan s for the ongoing development of the open pit.In this day and age, when operating costs have spiralled upwards due to inflation , and product revenues have decreased due to depressed economies and poor markets, it is vitally important for all aspects of the mining operation, including mine planning, to be efficient and cost effective.There are numerous options available for planning engineers when generating a mine plan. A cost effective mine plan must investigate all these options and select the optimum. When using manual planning techniques, it is often impossible to evaluate all the available options. To do this, and to produce an optimum mine plan, a computer is required.This paper discusses mine planning, with emphasis toward the short-term plan and comments on how the processes may be computerized. It also describes in detail, a computer software system called STEPS, which has been designed as an interactive graphics, computer-aided short -term mine planning and scheduling tool."
