Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.

The balling section of the pelletizing plant at Hoogovens IJmuiden consists of 7 balling drums. Each with an average capacity of 100 tons of green pellets per hour. The balling drums are equipped with rotating scrapers and water-spraying systems. The scrapers are installed in order to restrict the growth of the race to a certain thickness. The spraying system is used to adjust the desired value of the moisture-content of the rewetted ground ore, the pellets and the race. The desired value is the value by which the balling- process is stable, good pellets are formed and surge occurs within certain limits. In October 1980 the construction of one of the balling drums has been modified. The rotating scraper was removed and the inner wall of the drum was supplied with a rubber-lining. In 1982 a second balling drum has been rubber- lined. At the same time the Tyler vibrating screen of this balling circuit has been replaced by a roller(bed)screen. By the end of 1983 all 7 balling circuits will be equipped with rubber-lined drums in combination with roller(bed)screens. The combination of these two modifications will improve the quality and the screen analysis of the green pellets, moreover resulting in savings on energy- and maintenance costs. This paper describes the influence of a rubber- lining on the balling process and the green pellet quality by carrying out in-plant testruns in November/December 1980. The testrun results have been compared with the results of a not modified balling drum.

The use of augered cast-in-place piles has seen tremendous growth under commerical structures in the past twenty years. Problems with vibration, soil densification and/or heave associated with driven piles do not occur with properly installed augered piles. Augered cast-in-place piles were originally constructed (1950s) with diameters of .31 m (12 in.) and lengths up to 6.1 m (20 ft); however with the advent of better drilling equipment, diameters varying from .41m(16 in.)to .61 m (24 in.) and typical depths ranging from 18.3 m (60 ft) to 24.4 m (80 ft) are achievable. Reinforcement may vary from a single high strength rebar (Grade 60) at the top of the pile to a continuous steel cage depending on loading (compression, tension-uplift, and lateral). Typical axial design loads (compression) for a single augered cast-in-place pile are in the 445 kN (50 tons) to 890 kN (100 tons) range.

The Bureau of Mines developed a detector for controlling sorting devices to separate the copper-bearing fragments from the barren portion of Michigan native copper and western prophyry copper ores. A successful sorter could be used to preconcentrate the ore and eliminate costly hoisting or hauling of waste. An induction balance unit was developed and used in sorting tests on crushed sized - 2.5 + 1. 3-cm (- 1 + 1/2- in.) ores from the Kingston (0.9% Cu) and Centennial (1.6% Cu) mines of Upper Michigan. Concentrates of 4.0% and 7.5% Cu, respectively, were obtained at recoveries of 85 and 80% of

The Rotary Kiln at TeKumi was commissioned in February 2002. The process involves burning limestone at 1000 - 11 000¦C to produce a burnt lime (CaO) product. This paper describes the design and installation of a trifoil system to improve the energy efficiency of the kiln. An energy balance showed that 32 per cent of the energy was being lost through the flue gases, compared to 5.8 per cent in shell losses and 2.5 per cent lost as heat in the product. The trifoil proved to be the best way to tap the energy from the flue gases. Drying tests showed that a trifoil improved the drying time of limestone by 37.5 per cent, compared to only 25 per cent for a lifter system. The trifoil system increases the surface area for heat transfer in a Rotary Kiln by 180 per cent. The overal energy efficiency of the Rotary Kiln was improved by 15 per cent, resulting in a 15 per cent increase in production and an 80¦C reduction in flue gas temperature. This has reduced dust build up in the ducting while reducing maintenance costs through a reduced fan speed. The trifoil hub was designed with tooths at the centre to prevent shifting. Each trifoil leg has an anchor block on the down side to prevent downward movement of the trefoil legs.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include geological, geomorphological, sedimentological and mineralogical features which produce the complimentary ingredients with which one can formulate an economic evaluation of these complicated deposits within the confines of a well established geological model. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related depositional environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase can indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation methods and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Failure to recognize and measure these important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation goals. Increased general acceptance of sedimentology in the gological appraisal of ore bodies has progressed into the science of clastic sedimentalogy using measurable parameters to evaluate minable units. This branch of geology has developed as a tool in locating, defining, and mining alluvial concentrations of valuable heavy minerals. The repeatedly successful application of this valuable tool in conjunction with other classical geological methods can be directly related to the development of a geological model which formulates the distribution of detrital gold. This use of multiple geological techniques permits the transfer of routinely derived data to management. Standardized nomenclature permits the transmission of uniform information thereby promoting credible property evaluation. This approach enables organizations to critically assess large numbers of potential mining targets for definitive feasibility studies. Sedimentology must play an integral role in the evaluation of any alluvial deposit. The McDermitt mine was found as a separate mercury ore-bearing occurrence approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeasterly and in a different geologic setting from the old Cordero mine, which had been the district's major producer. The following briefly describes the discovery of the new deposit and the Placer Amex lnc. involvement. The Cordero mining property was under lease by Sierra Mineral Management from the owner Fred H. Lenway in February 1971, when the property was brought to the attention of Placer Amex Inc. (known at that time as American Exploration and Mining Co.) by Richard F. Hewlett of Sierra Mineral Management. The property was first examined by Amex geologists in the spring of 1971, who reported favorably on the project. During that year, Sierra Minerals Management had retained Dr. Larry Walters as a consultant. He proceeded to drill test mercury soils anomalies which he had found northeast of the old Cordero mine in an area overlain by recent alluvium and gravel. An area known as the D area was subsequently blocked out and ascribed a tonnage of about 18 1 kt (200,000 st) which occurs in the vicinity of the eastern edge of the currently defined McDermitt ore body. This mineralization was found in flat lying mercury-bearing lakebeds, unlike the steep structurally controlled ore which was mined in the old Cordero mine. It became apparent to Placer Amex that since the chances of much more extensive ore were good in such a geologic environment, additional exploration was warranted. A joint venture was formed in October 1972 by American Exploration and Mining Co. and Sierra Mineral Management to further explore the Cordero property. The project exploration was fully funded and managed by Amex. Sampling began by Placer Amex in the D area where an open trench had exposed the lakebed ore. Visible cinnabar could not account for the high-grade mercury assays taken from the trench, and an unknown mercury mineral was suspected. Subsequent work established the presence of a chlorine-bearing mercury sulfide which may have enriched the lakebeds as a secondary supergene mineral. Early identification of the mercury-bearing mineral corderoite (Hg3Cl2S,) aided in the geologic concepts for the ore occurrence and was helpful in exploring for the expansion of the D area. Corderoite was found occurring with cinnabar in the lakebeds, and in places it is a major contributor. Specimens of the unique ore were given to Dr. Eugene E. Foord and Dr. Pieter Berendsen at Stanford University, who subsequently identified the chemical and crystallographic makeup of the new mineral and described it for the first time as a naturally occurring substance. Metallurgical work on mercury recovery from the newly described mineral was carried out by the Placer Development Ltd. laboratories in Vancouver, and an acceptable recovery system was worked out together with a planned mill design. Step out drilling from the D area by Placer Amex Inc. encountered extensive flat lying lakebed ore. The McDermitt ore body, as subsequently defined by drilling, was found to contain 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of open pittable ore, containing approximately 5 kg/t (10 lb per st) Hg. The ore body gently dips to the north and is found lying mainly in claybeds just above an opalite breccia blanket which overlies the earlier volcanics. Some ore is also found in the opalite breccia. The mine and mill were constructed under an operating joint venture with Placer Amex Inc. and Sterling Mineral Ventures, and production began in June 1975 at the rate of 20,000 flasks per year. "Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load–deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are generally used to support compressive loads from superstructures. Some structures, like transmission towers, mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms, tall chimneys, jetty structures, etc. are constructed on pile foundations, which have to resist large lateral and uplift loads and moments. The various loads (compressive, lateral and uplift) and moments act on the piles simultaneously rather than isolated manner. There are well-established theoretical methods present to evaluate the pile behaviour under different isolated loadings namely, verticalcompressive, vertical-uplift and lateral (Poulos and Davis, 1980), but there are very limited studies focused on pile behaviour under combined loadings. Though there is good number of studies reported on pile behaviour under combined compressive-lateral and compressive-uplift loadings (Ramasamy, 1974; Jain et al. 1987; Zhang and Small, 1999; Dash and Pise, 2003; Karthigeyan et al. 2006 & 2007; , there are only very few studies reported on pile behaviour under combined uplift and lateral loads. Darr et al. (1990) described an approach to a rational solution of the interaction of pile to combined uplift and lateral loads based on analytical and experimental studies. Influence of cyclic loading was also considered. Narasimha Rao and Prasad (1993) investigated the uplift behaviour of pile anchors subjected to lateral cyclic loading. There were many onshore and offshore situations where lateral cyclic loading may affect both the pullout and lateral loading capacity of pile anchors. Jetty and wharf structures are usually subjected to lateral forces from wave and wind action. If these cyclic lateral loads are acting on the supporting piles, the resulting movement of the upper part of the embedded length of pile may reduce the skin friction. This progressive deterioration in pullout resistance may not be reflected by a pullout test made soon after the installation. Hence, Tomlinson and Woodward (2008) pointed out that a generous safety factor on the ultimate pullout load should be adopted for piles in such situations. Mroueh and Shahrour (2007, 2008) presented a threedimensional finite element analysis of the response of battered piles to the combined lateral and vertical pullout loads. Nevertheless, the model is not validated well due to lack of good experimental data based on rigorous experiments. Thus there is a scope for investigating the effect of lateral load on pile behaviour under uplift load and vice versa based on carefully designed experiments, which is main focus of the present investigation."

Currently two of the most important characteristics of construction aggregates are (a) the particle size distribution (psd) and (b) the “shape” of the aggregate particles. The long established test methods and standards for these properties require substantial resources and most suppliers can take samples and conduct tests at intervals measured in days (psd) or even months (shape). Furthermore these tests require time: so the results are available only after material has been stockpiled or shipped. In the rare cases where problems are found the out-of-spec material has often been shipped to points unknown. There are substantial advantages to be obtained if the psd and other geometrical properties could be obtained from the material as it moves through the production processes and if the results could be reported back within seconds or minutes to Plant Control Managers. This paper describes a single on-line system used to evaluate production of crushed material in a production quarry. The system consists of an enclosure (containing the camera and lighting etc.) mounted over a production belt. Images are fed by fiber optic cable to a nearby control room where the data are analyzed; stored; displayed; and made available for integration into a process control system. Numerous forms of display can be created according to the needs of the producer. Once programmed by an automation engineer all functions of operation are fully automated. The system has permitted over 400 tests per hour with a feed back time less than 2 seconds. Sufficient geometrical measurements are made so that many different “shape” factors can be computed on a similar time scale. The paper summarizes the results from approximately 100 shifts of about 8 hours each and compares the imaging method with the current standard hand methods. Study of the data generated showed that, when combined with additional plant information, the system can be used to generate additional useful control information.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is evaluating water spray additives for the purpose of improving respirable dust control during coal mining operations, with particular emphasis on the longwall shearer. Recent field tests of surfactant-polymer reagents at two production longwall operations have shown favorable respirable dust reductions compared with water sprays containing no additive. Gravimetric dust samples obtained by a technician downwind of the shearer while following or preceding the machine showed dust reductions in the range of about 40% to 60% for some of the reagent formulations compared with using water alone. Three polymers were tested: two polyethylene oxide compounds of different molecular weight and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). All were effective for dust reduction, and two were cost effective when used in combination with sodium di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate surfactant. How-ever, the use of these reagents requires the longwall operator to be more aware of headgate dust control. Experimental evidence indicates that dust captured by reagent-treated sprays at the shearer can be reemitted in the headgate area if stagcloader-crusher sprays and other dust controls are inadequate.

Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

The recovery of fine hydrophilic gangue in flotation is related to the recovery of water. Water is carried by bubbles as a film and wake into the froth. The amount carried (entrained) depends on bubble size, gas rate and the subject of this paper, frother type. To isolate the effect of frother type from that of bubble size and gas rate, gas holdup is used as the correlating variable. Measurements were made using a bubble column (no solids) operated continuously with the overflow recycled. Continuous operation meant some foam depth was required to ensure only entrained water is recovered. Using an automatically controlled 7cm foam depth the overflow rate of water is used as a measure of 'water carrying rate'. It is shown that the common frothers can be grouped into four families based on the water carrying rate-gas holdup relationship.

A process for the recovery of copper from the waste oxide copper of a mined-out sulphide orebody is described. Hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from this and similar wastes has been tried several times previously without success. Leaching is carried out by sulphuric acid in columns under conditions that minimise the iron content of the pregnant leach liquor, and copper is then recovered by ion exchange rather than the more conventional solvent extraction. The resin is stripped by spent electrolyte and copper is electrowon. Results are presented for testwork originally carried out in 1993, and repeated in 2006, and the novel aspects of the process, leaching and ion exchange, are discussed. Finally, preliminary order of magnitude capital and operating costs are given, demonstrating that the process is cost effective.

Column flotation has been successfully implemented on a production scale in the Athabasca oil sands. In this application, bitumen is recovered and mineral matter is simultaneously rejected from a middling stream originating from a primary separation vessel. Exploiting the natural hydrophobicity of bitumen, the middlings streams have traditionally been processed utilizing conventional, mechanical flotation cells. Although these cells offer adequate bitumen recovery and mineral rejection rates, operating costs are high due to the required maintenance of the wetted mechanical components. In comparison, column flotation provides superior metallurgical performance while offering a lower maintenance demand. Both metallurgical and mechanical characteristics of column flotation are discussed to demonstrate the benefits of this technology for the recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

"Flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine processes 41,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu. Chalcopyrite and chalcocite are the main copper bearing minerals which are concentrated in three stages of roughing, cleaning and recleaning. Due to major changes in the reagent addition regime, make-up balls combination, and throughput to the primary mills an increase of 2.6% (from 87.2% to 89.8%) in the sulfide copper recovery was obtained during a period of six years. In order to investigate a rather large variation of monthly recovery (i.e., from 89.0 to 91.2%) of the plant after implementation of the changes, a study was undertaken to trace mineralogically possible causes of such a behavior. During a five-month period, monthly composite samples of feed and tailings of the flotation circuit were taken. At the first stage, the polished sample preparation method and the mineral counting procedure were optimized through a detailed study. Liberation degrees and types of locking of valuable minerals in both streams were determined in three size intervals of +75, +38 and –38 microns. It was found that for both recovery levels (i.e., 89% and 91.2%), there was no significant difference in the liberation degrees of valuable minerals in the flotation feed; the average liberation degree was 57.1% with a standard deviation of 3.1%. On the other hand, in the case of high recovery level (i.e., 91.2%) there was a reduction of 15% in the amount of free valuable minerals in the tailings stream. The highest reduction was found for the -38 micron size range in particular for chalcocite. It was concluded that compared to the grinding circuit the change in the flotation circuit had the significant effect on the plant recovery increase.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and currently processes 41,000 t/d of ore. The concentrator has been in operation since 1982. Last year, the concentrator produced 130,000 tonnes of copper and 4,000 tonnes of molybednite concentrate. An expansion to the plant which will increase the throughput by 50% is under construction and will be effective in 2003.After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 of 12.7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 30.5% Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. At the present time, the average sulfide copper recovery of the plant is 89.8% which varies depending on the operating conditions and ore type."

"SUMMARYFor making a comparison of magnetic surveys measured from the ground and from the air, Worcester County, Maryland, was chosen as a proving ground. Vertical magnetic intensities were observed on the ground, and total magnetic intensities were observed from the air. A comparison of the two magnetic maps reveals similar large magnetic features, but these are displaced in some instances by distances greater than a mile. Magnetic terrane in the two charts is of the same type but often differs greatly in respective characteristic features.The sacrifices in accuracy that may be expected from the use of different systems of diurnal magnetic corrections on ground observations constitute a part of this report.INTRODUCTIONThe value of magnetic surveys for gaining information concerning the crystalline basement is recognized increasingly. That this topography is often reflected to a major degree in the overlying sediments with certain offsetting is well understood. Even where such sediments are deep, the surface topography of upper formations often reflects this bedrock topography to a certain degree."

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of research to develop a process for recovering additional beryllium from a commercial mill waste product, fluoferrate leach residue. Forty-five percent of the total beryllium in the leach residue was recovered in a beryllia product assaying over 98 pct Be0 by a process comprising (1) leaching with 1 N sulfuric acid, (2) adjusting the acidity of the leach liquor to pH 2, (3) extracting the beryllium with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (EHPA), (4) stripping the loaded extract with sodium hydroxide solution, (5) boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide, and (6) calcining the beryllium hydroxide. Calculated reagent requirements per pound of Be° recovered by a proposed flowsheet were 28.1 lb sulfuric acid, 0.04 lb flocculent, 0.15 lb EHPA, 0.06 lb isodecanol (IDA), 0.22 gal kerosine, and 6.3 lb sodium hydroxide.

During the commissioning phase of Prominent Hill, periods of reduced recovery were experienced with higher-grade ore blends. This was unexpected and as part of the process to identify the cause, surveys were conducted in May 2009, with two different ore blends (copper grades: 1.94 per cent Cu (blend 1) and 2.49 per cent Cu (blend 2)). Metallurgical performance was assessed in terms of rougher recovery and grade with consideration of both pulp and froth effects. In addition, hydrodynamic measurements (gas hold up, bubble size, superficial gas velocity) as well as measurements of bubble load and top-of-froth grade were taken during the surveys and full mineralogical assessment of selected streams completed to characterise the nature of the differences. The metallurgical results showed that the lower performance was obtained with blend 2 which contained the higher amount of chalcocite and was higher-grade. Analysis of the survey data showed that for both ore blends more than half of the copper loss occurred in the +38 ¦m size fractions. Almost 30 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fractions that reported to the rougher tails during processing of blend 2 was liberated compared to less than five per cent for blend 1. Additionally almost 60 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fraction of blend 2 was chalcocite compared with approximately 20 per cent in blend 1. This paper discusses the sensitivity of the chalcocite-to-surface chemistry effects causing marked reductions in recovery either through reduced pulp recovery or froth phase (detachment) effects. The reagent suite and operating conditions were subsequently changed and the recoveries increased substantially and the sensitivity to ore changes eliminated. Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.
