THE theoretical possibilities for the realization of flash smelting have been known for a long time. Calculations concerning the same can be found in previously published literature,1 and suggestions for its accomplishment in practice are described in patents on the subject. Likewise a smaller number of practical test results are known. Autogenous smelting is closely connected with flash smelting, since in flash smelting techniques it is possible to use the heat evolved by oxidation of the sulfides for the smelting process to such an extent that under certain conditions smelting can proceed without additional fuel. However, in the event that insufficient heat is available from the oxidation of the sulfide concentrates, then additional heat may be supplied by preheating the air, using oxygen enriched air, on burning additional fuel with the concentrate.

The transient flow of gases in long pipe lines is a problem of industrial interest. The present discussion deals with the application of the conservation of momentum and material to the transient flow of gas in conduits which are long with respect to their diameter. Solutions of the resulting equations include consideration of variations in friction and specific volume of the fluid as functions of time and position along the conduit. The changes in state along the pipe line are established as a function of time. The methods proposed may be extended to other situations. The flow of compressible fluids under steady conditions' has been considered in detail. Primary emphasis was placed on the development of simple means of taking into account the non-uniform flow' realized in long conduits under such conditions. Binder2 discussed the essential differences between the flow of compressible and uoncompressible fluids. Bonilla" proposed direct methods of solution for equations describing isothermal flow in long pipes. Similar considerations limited to steady flow have been discussed by Ruth.' Palsgrove 5 sugrested a graphical means of solving specific problems relating to the flow of gases in conduits of uniform section. Some of the basic concepts of the flow of a compressible viscous fluid in straight tubes have been described by Kuo.6 Problems of this type require knowledge of the equation of state of the fluid. In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. Somewhat earlier Hurst9 discussed the uncteady flow of fluids in petroleum reservoirs. Helhering-ton. MarRoberts. and Huntington'" established experimentally the pressure distribution and accumulative flow rate of natural gas through an unconsolidated sand. Recently Joffe11,12 conhitlcretl the specific problem of the flow of natural gas in relatively long.,. pipe lines for unsteady conditions with emphasis upon the economic feusibility of the storage of gas in such a reservoir. These discussions were based upon approximations of the partial differential equations applying to the condititons of flow. The results were descriptive of the physical situation and indirated the effertiveness of large pipe lines as cyclic storage facilities for natural gas. The advent of analog computers" has increased materially the practicality of solving nonlinear partial differential expressions. Several iterative numerical and graphical methods14,15,16 have been developed to solve nonlinear equations. However, it appears that the pair of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations involved in problems of this nature are not directly susceptible to solution by presently available analog computer or formal iterative numerical techniques. Nevertheless. graphical analyses afford a means of obtaining data of engineering value without special equipment. MATHEMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS Since the length of the conduit is large in comparison to the cross section in the cases to be considered, it is possible to treat the characteristics of the flow as independent of position in the cross section of the conduit. This possibility follows since the energy- connected with the velocity profile is small compared to that required to overcome the friction associated with its movement throughout the length of the line. Average values of the pressure. velocity. kinetic energy. momentum, and specific volume may he assigned to the fluid at any particular cross section. From a mathematical viewpoint this may be expressed in the following way for velocity: µ = µ(?X)..........(1) The uncertainties introduced by such assumptions usually are negligible when the ratio of length to diameter is greater than the order of 1.000. On this basis a volume element ma!. be considered to occupy the entire cross section of the conduit. Such an element is presented in Fig. 1.

MR. R. V. NEILY stated that he had at one time operated at Goldenville. The practice and results are much the same now as in the olden days. Inside plates were then found to be a source of trouble and had been removed. At the Libbey mine, Queen's county, the sulphides carried considerable gold, and $45.00 to $60.00 per ton had been recovered from the concentrates by roasting and chlorinating. Later, concentrates were treated with bromocyanide. Following that practice, a cyanide leaching plant was installed, which did not require concentration of the tailings. Cyanidation brought a recovery of around 95 per cent, with but $300 worth of plant. In Nova Scotia, the ore of each locality presents an individual problem of its own as to treatment required. Ma. W. B. Timm stated that, in the majority of Nova Scotia gold ores, more than 75 per cent of the gold content is free-milling and, naturally, stamps are most efficient for collecting and amalgamating this gold. In Ontario and the West, they had got away from stamps, and perhaps the main reason was that the supply of battery-men, who came from Nova Scotia, had died off. Ball-mills had been installed, which required smaller space and handled large tonnage, even though, as far as amalgamation goes, the stamps were probably more efficient. If concentration is to be done, ore from stamps is usually in better shape for recovery in passing over the tables, as there is no slime. With the ball-mill, flotation is necessary. The better practice, undoubtedly, is to take out what gold is possible before it is all smashed up, as in the ball-mill, though recent developments in the ball-mill make it possible to trap and take coarse gold directly from the mill. In this way, cyanidation is speeded-up, due to saving of the time the coarse gold would take before going into solution. PROFESSOR A. E. FLYNN found it unusual in these days to read anything in favour of the stamp mill, and thanked Mr. Henderson for the excellent paper in which he upholds the stamps and backs his opinion with facts from actual operations. For the typical Nova Scotia ore, containing coarse gold, stamps are un¬excelled. It used to be said that the virtue of stamps is that they brighten the gold for amalgamation. Although this saying is almost classical, it is not true, for gold is never brighter than in the native, untouched state. Any hammering that gold gets makes it more difficult to amalgamate.

The National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program was established in 1976. The objective of this program is to develop the technology and provide the facilities for the safe, environmentally acceptable isolation of civilian- and defense-related, high-level and transuranic nuclear wastes, including spent fuel elements, for which the federal government is responsible. The principal emphasis of this program is on disposal in mined geologic repositories. Technology development in support of the NWST program includes the formulation and management of a strong basic science and engineering program to generate an appropriate data base to aid in understanding of the key geological processes and major engineering structures involved. The current status, problems, and future plans of the technology program will be summarized.

From the Pittsburgh coal bed in the four states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia has been produced an output that, at mine prices, represents a greater value than any other single mineral deposit in the world has yielded.12 While this distinction may in a few years pass to the gold reef of the Witwatersrand, it is possible that eventually, owing to the tremendous reserves still remaining, the ultimate yield of the Pittsburgh bed will be greater than that of any other known single deposit. Considering its importance, not a great deal has been written of its early history and development as a whole; most of the accounts have been of limited localities, or, at the most, of the area within a single state. In "Coal through the Ages" the writer mentioned some references to its early history, but this study will deal not only with its history but with the character of the bed, where and why it was first developed, and its effect upon the states in which it is found. It has not been the intention to write a detailed history of the development of the seam in each locality, as neither time nor inclination were available for doing such work, but only to show the influences that tended to hasten or retard such development. In general the historical matter ends about 1830, when geological surveys began to be made. Some of the maps show data available only since that time, and the sections about coal preparation and coking have been extended to the present time to show the changing conditions. It is believed that the early history includes all published records, and many more sources than those shown in the bibliography were consulted. It is quite likely that some references to coal in this area may be found in the unpublished papers of some of our early soldiers and colonizers, which exist in several libraries, and it is hoped that some future * Dedicated to Dr. Thomas S. Baker, President Emeritus, Carnegie Institute of Technology, whose labors in promoting the International Coal Conferences and in establishing the Coal Research Laboratory have done much in showing the industry how science can be of help to it. This report contains information on the cells or containers used to hold a known small depth (usually 1 mm. or less) of the dust-containing liquid from impinger, 5/6/ filter-paper,7/ and other samples collected from the air while the particles revealed by a microscope (equipped with a 16-mm., 0.25- or 0.50-N. A. objective and ordinarily used with axial light-field illumination) are counted in order to obtain an index of the concentration of dust in the sampled air. Information is given on such subjects as the kinds of cells available, kinds used, actual depths of cells, and construction of simple, inexpensive cells. The Sarcheshmeh copper deposit contains 1 billion tones of ore averaging 0.7% copper and 0.025% molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and currently processes 41,000t/d. Molybdenite as a by-product is recovered in two separate stages. First, a bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is produced and in the second stage these two are separated. The recovery of molybdenite in the first and second stages is 65% and 85-90%, respectively. The yearly production of molybdenite concentrate varies between 3500 and 4000 t. Sodium sulphide is used as the depressant of the copper and iron bearing minerals which due to a rather high consumption (17.7 kg/t) constitutes one of the major cost items of the plant (i.e., 58% of total reagents cost). A detailed laboratory scale study showed that replacing air with nitrogen could reduce the consumption of sodium sulphide (i.e., H2S or mineral origin). Nitrogen for the plant was supplied from an oxygen plant used for the smelter through a 1400 m long pipeline. The existence of the oxygen plant at the Sarcheshmeh complex was a key factor in the implementation and success of this project. After using nitrogen in the plant for a period of twenty one months, the consumption of sodium sulphide was reduced from 17.7 to 14.2 kg/t at constant metallurgy. The reduction was lower than expected which was mainly due to the type of sodium sulphide used and the lack of any automatic instrument to control the depressant (sodium sulphide) dosage. The latter in turn caused the operators to overuse sodium sulphide in order to reach and maintain the target metallurgy (i.e., higher molybdenite recovery along with lower copper content of the concentrate).

Generic mathematical models have been developed for simulating heat transfer in two types of slag resistance heating electric furnaces for sulphide smelting: i) six-electrode-in-line rectangular furnaces and ii) three-electrode circular furnaces. The models are based on three-dimensional steady-state heat transfer of conduction, convection and radiation. Solidification of liquid slag into solid slag by water-cooling units, for use as freeze lining of furnace walls, is also considered in the models. The developed models are capable of providing predictions with reasonable accuracy for electric furnaces on 1) temperatures in slag, matte, cooling water, freeze lining and other solid regions as well as temperatures at various fluid/solid interfaces, 2) freeze lining thickness, 3) furnace smelting rate and 4) furnace heat loss rate. These computer models are built into executable application programs that are very efficient, with execution time less than one second, and can be easily portable to most computing platforms. This paper describes, as an example, the modelling results on heat transfer in six-electrode furnaces. The major modelling results show that in six-electrode furnaces uniform electric power inputs to the electrodes likely lead to low temperature regions close to slag and matte tapping ends of the furnaces, and the power input and the formation of air gaps between freeze lining and cooling units have significant influences on the thickness of freeze lining maintained by the cooling units.

"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThese Guidelines reflect the state-of-the-practice of the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) in North America. DMM is an in situ mixing process that breaks down the soil structure; injects binders, fillers and reagents into the soil; and blends them with the soil. DMM is also commonly referred to as Soil Mixing. The final properties of the treated soil in situ are a function of the composition of the native soils and groundwater, the binders introduced, the mixing methods and energy, and the conditions and time of curing. Treated soils generally have increased strength and stiffness and/or reduced permeability relative to the native soils.This document addresses DMM performed by rotating single and multiple axis mixing tools, rotating cutter wheels at the end of a rigid kelly bar, or trench mixing using a rotating cutting/mixing chain around the perimeter of a rigid bar. Binder may be injected through low or high energy (velocity) jets.The treated soils created through wet DMM are heterogeneous mixtures of binder, water, soil, and groundwater. Treated soils produced by dry DMM techniques are a mixture of binder, soil, and the water already present in the native soil.DMM applications described in this document include•,Earth retention•,Liquefaction mitigation•,Groundwater seepage control and containment isolation•,Bearing capacity improvement•,Deep foundations•,Mass stabilization and contamination containment•,Embankment, levee and dam strengthening, and stabilization•,Casing replacementThis document was developed to address deep foundations applications. Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

Oxidants are added in uranium leaching in acid media to convert iron(II) in solution to iron(III). Iron(III) has an important role in the leaching of uranium by acting as an electron transfer agent for the oxidation of uranium(IV) to uranium(VI). The oxidation of iron(II) to iron(III) in sulfate solutions using sulfur dioxide/oxygen (SO2/O2) was carried out under typical uranium leaching conditions (pH 1-2, 20-50°C) to confirm literature trends and this work was then extended to the use of SO2/O2 in the leaching of uranium ore. The oxidation rate was found to be dependent on the initial SO2/O2 volumetric ratio and the oxygen mass transfer rate, but was independent of the initial iron(III) concentration above about 200 ppm at pH 2. The presence of 55 ppm organic extractant (Alamine 336) decreased the reaction rate. The oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) for the mixing tank system was measured and was found to decrease with increasing solids density in a 1 g L-1 MgSO4.7H2O solution.

A presentation of the W-Ru constitution diagram is given. Techniques utilized in the determination of phase boundary values include electron micro-probe analysis of two-phased alloys and diffusion couples, as well as normal metallographic and X-ray methods. The primary features of the diagram are: 1) a terminal solid solution of ruthenium in tungsten with a maximum solubility of 23 at. pct Ru at 2300°C; 2) a terminal solid solution of tungsten in ruthenium with a maximum solubility of 48 at. pct W at 2205°C; 3) a o phase of maximum breadth about 6 at. pct based on the composition W3Ru2 which forms peritectically from the melt at 2300°C, and which decomposes eutectoidally at 1667 °C to form a twigs ten and 0 ruthenium; 4) a eutectic at 45 at. pct Ru and 2205°C with the products being o plus ß ruthenium. THE W-Ru diagram has previously been studied only in a cursory fashion. Raub and alter' obtained a 1400°C isotherm in which they observed no intermediate phases, and on which they established the limits of solubility as 36.5 at. pct W in ruthenium and about 1.5 at. pct Ru in tungsten. In addition, Obrowski2 found a o phase forming peritectically from the melt and existing only above 1650°C. Below this temperature the phase was presumed to decompose eutectoidally. The present work finds the diagram as given in Fig. 1. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials used for alloy preparation in determining the W-Ru constitution diagram were 99.9 pct pure ruthenium powder supplied by Baker Chemical Co., and 99.9 pct pure tungsten powder from General Electric Co. Typical analyses of these elements are given in Table I. Initial alloys at 10 at. pct intervals were prepared from the metal powders by the following method. Powders sufficient for 25 g of the alloys were weighed out with an accuracy of 0.1 mg and blended mechanically. After blending, the powders were compacted, in a steel die, at approximately 30,000 psi. The compacts were sintered in an electric vacuum furnace in order to remove adsorbed gases and to achieve partial densification prior to arc-melting. Vacua of 10-4 mm Hg or less were maintained in sintering as the furnace temperature was raised to approximately 2000°C. Sintering times ranged from 10 to 20 hr. The sintered compacts were arc-melted under a protective atmosphere of purified helium. Melting was conducted on a water-cooled copper hearth, utilizing a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. In the melting process, each alloy was turned over and re-melted on opposite sides from four to six times to ensure complete melting and to eliminate gross in-homogeneities. The arc-melter used had a vacuum capability of 5 X 10-6 mm Hg, and a leak rate of about 20 -liters per hr. Chemical analysis techniques for refractory metal-platinum group metal combinations are not well-established; therefore, composition control and determination depended principally upon weight-loss observations and calculations. This consisted in weighing each alloy after sintering and after arc-melting, and calculating the maximum and minimum composition values, assuming the total weight losses to be first all tungsten, and then all ruthenium. Since composition uncertainty was directly related to weight loss, care was taken to minimize losses in handling, compacting, and melting. Faculty at the University of Missouri-Rolla have carried out research on the application of high pressure water jets as a means of excavat- ing coal for over 15 years. During the course of this time, a number of different concepts have been explored--the most recent of which has been to use high pressure water jets as a means of extinguishing an underground coal seam fire. This paper will examine the use of some of these technologies and will consider the results as a basis for discussion of further applications of water jets in the future. The structural pro- perties of coal which distinguish it from other adjacent geotechnical material and provide a considerable advantage to water jet cutting, will also be presented and the advantages of using this tool will be discussed.

WHEN a subject, such as the manufacture and service of chilled car wheels, as has been fruitlessly discussed for ten or fifteen years, it is difficult to revive interest and action by the mere repetition of statements and arguments that have been made before. And when a situation involves serious responsibilities for conditions that have grown up under circumstances beyond the control of any particular individuals or authority, it is even more difficult to deal with. But there is one phase of every subject that need not involve these particular points if presented in a, proper manner; and that is, " the future state." I will try to present the subject of this communication from the latter standpoint and with the hope that all of those interested will feel disposed to give the matter attention from the basis that it is a, vitally important one to all that travel on railroads, whether as employees or officials, or as dependent on those in charge of the operation, or in the matter of materials and equipment used. The conditions of chilled wheel service have been changed so radically in the past ten or fifteen years by the use of freight cars of 40 and 50 tons capacity, that it is fair to say in the interest of all concerned in the use and in the manufacture of such wheels, that the increased strains and loads have been quite sufficient to account for much of the service results that have transpired. That proper provision was not made for increased possibilities of strength and wear, in fact that previous factors of the kind were allowed to deteriorate, is no proof that such wheels cannot be made equal to heavy service conditions as shown in the data given herein.

Ground instability is among the major causes of serious incidents and production disruptions in the mining industry and has a significant impact on safety. Mining companies may have operations in a number of jurisdictions with varied regulatory requirements for ground control management. As these companies expand into countries where mining regulations are formative or lacking clear definition, ground control practices are usually developed by local mine personnel based on their experience. In many cases, inconsistent procedures and standards are generated, which can lead to an increase in occurrence of underground incidents due to difficulties and confusion in implementation. This situation has forced some mining companies to standardize their ground control practices by geographic regions or divisions. Though this approach is an improvement, it may not lead to effective management of ground control issues across all operations of a global mining company. Barrick Gold Corporation, with operations in North and South America, Australia and Africa, decided to adopt a global approach to ground control management. This global approach requires all Barrick operations to prepare and implement an effective ground control management plan (GCMP) based on site specific conditions and company guidelines. It is also required that the GCMP be developed through application of sound geotechnical engineering practices and be consistent with local regulatory requirements and Barrick safety policies. All Barrick underground operations have GCMPs in place, and its surface operations are now involved in the initiative. This paper presents Barrick?s global approach to underground mine ground control management and outlines the content and process for the development of a GCMP.

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30’S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the R/V Ka’imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them seven metres high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery.

"A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. The benefits and advantages of using this type of product to lubricate mining equipment as well as the field evaluation and experience will be discussed."

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.
