El presente trabajo describe los factores que incluyen el proceso de planeamiento de la mina. Dado el tamaño y forma de los minerales encontrados en un mina de Estados Unidos, se inició el sistema de "open it" o minas a tajo abierto. Posteriormente, este sistema permanecería sin cambio alguno hasta mediados de 1930, donde se inició el uso de unidades de transporte montadas sobre llantas y se mejoró el proceso de operación de "open it". El planeamiento de mina a cielo abierto se basa en tres elementos: suficiente mineral, evaluación a largo plazo de la operación y las características del equipo de carguío y transporte. Asimismo, la vida de una mina a tajo abierto se divide en tres períodos: operación inicial, período normal de producción y período final de producción, considerando que dicho planeamiento se realice en las operaciones de este período.

"Inco Limited has operated aluminum mine shaft conveyances since 1968. Aluminum conveyances are used where the hoisting in system requires lightweight conveyances to maintain the hoist rope safety factors and mine hoist rope pulls as dictated by government regulations. Inco Ltd. currently has 20 skips (including spares) operating in the Ontario Division mines. The main problems encountered are with galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and metal fatigue. This paper will highlight some of the problems encountered and illustrate methods utilized to overcome the problems and improve the conveyances performance.IntroductionAluminum mine shaft conveyances have been in use at Inco Limited's various Sudbury district mines since 1968. All of the conveyances currently in use are skips used for hoisting mine ore and rock. Inco had an aluminum quick change Kimberley-type skip and cage in operation at its Totten Mine in the early 1970s, but this mine is no longer in operation and no further comment will be made.The primary reason why aluminum conveyances are chosen over conventional steel conveyances is because of their light weight. Typically an aluminum conveyance will weigh about 60% to 70% of a steel conveyance of similar design. The lighter weight conveyances will allow higher payloads to be used and still maintain the statutory hoist rope factors of safety. It must be remembered that increasing the payload will increase the power required to raise the load and the hoist will have to have the necessary horsepower for the increased payload or the system will be overloaded.The front dump (Rola-chute) skips are of the bail-less design, i.e. the box structure also supports the load and has the shaft guide shoes attached directly to the side of the box structure. The Copper Cliff North Mine and South Mine skips have a joint in the centre of the conveyance and are installed in the shaft in two sections and connected with pins. This feature allows very long (42 ft) skips to be used in areas where a one-piece bail-type conveyance could not be installed. It is not practical to make sectionalized bail-type conveyances"

Antimony (Sb) is an element similar to arsenic that forms anions in surface waters, rather than cations like other metals. Little is known about natural mobility of antimony in the environment. However, recent studies have suggested that antimony has similar toxicity to arsenic. Current New Zealand drinking water guideline values are 3 parts per billion (0.003 mg/l) for antimony and 10 ppb (0.01 mg/l) for arsenic. Antimony occurs principally in stibnite (Sb2S3) in mesothermal vein deposits hosted in low grade metamorphic belts of eastern Australia and southern New Zealand. Many deposits have been mined historically, including one large deposit, at Hillgrove, NSW. Oxidation of stibnite and associated arsenopyrite and pyrite causes local acidification of natural waters but acid is readily neutralised by carbonates in mineralised zones and host rocks, and therefore waters are near-neutral (pH 6-8.5). Antimony dissolves readily in moderately oxidized, near-neutral waters. Experimental stibnite oxidation yielded up to 37 mg/kg (37 000 ppb) dissolved antimony, and mine and tailings dam waters at Hillgrove mine have up to 55 mg/kg (55 000 ppb) dissolved antimony. Natural stibnite can contain >5000 mg/kg arsenic in solid solution and therefore dissolution of stibnite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite also releases arsenic into waters. Resultant dissolved arsenic concentrations are up to 3.6 mg/l (experimental) and up to 7.2 mg/l (mine and tailings dam seepages). Mine and tailings discharge waters have elevated antimony and arsenic where they emerge, but attenuation occurs by deposition of the metals on to amorphous iron oxyhydroxides which can contain >10% each of antimony and arsenic. Historic disposal of mineralised waste rock and tailings into the stream system at Hillgrove has caused contamination of sediments and waters with antimony and arsenic for at least 20 km downstream with effects traceable in sediments for 300 km. Other stibnite-bearing deposits are likely to have analogous environmental effects, particularly from historically-mined sites.

"Over the years, mathematical modeling has been established as a viable tool for design and analysis of melting and solidification processes. Modeling of electromagnetic casting and melting systems involves three coupled problems -- determination of the containment field, the shape of the meniscus, and the temperature field -- which have to be solved simultaneously. One of the difficulties in numerical simulation of these systems is in defining and gridding the solution domain as the meniscus shape of the liquid region is not known a priori. This paper describes a methodology for solving these coupled problems in a two-dimensional electromagnetic containment field. This method is based on the solution of the electromagnetic, free surface dynamic, and heat transfer equations in a fixed domain in computational space by mapping the physical space into an invariant computational space during the search for the equilibrium shape using a variable non-orthogonal coordinate transformation. This approach, also, eliminates the need for regridding the liquid and solid regions during phase change. This methodology is demonstrated for two electromagnetic confinement systems -- the Magnetic Suspension Melting process and the electromagnetic casting of aluminum. The model predictions are in good agreement with available data for these systems. It is suggested that the methodology presented here is likely to provide a useful tool in the design, analysis, and optimization of electromagnetic confinement systems. IntroductionDuring the past decade, mathematical modeling has emerged as a viable tool for the design, analysis, and optimization of casting and melting processes /1-2/. It is generally recognized that the usefulness of modeling to study the interplay between the various process parameters without resorting to extensive experimentation relies heavily on accurate representation of the physical phenomena in these systems. In modeling electromagnetic confinement casting and melting systems, it is important that the model address all aspects of electromagnetic field interaction with the metal, if accurate predictions are to be obtained /3/. The electromagnetic field affects the heat transfer phenomena primarily through joule heating. In addition, the electromagnetic forces play a key role in heat redistribution in the molten pool via melt stirring, and, in confinement systems, support the molten metal pool."

The paper provides an overview of subsidence research which was done by the Sasol Company in South Africa over a period of more than six years. The magnitudes of subsidence elements in South Africa are largely similar to those in the U.S.A. and Australia, as opposed to Europe. The research resulted in a subsidence prediction method with a new approach to the prediction of ground strain. The paper also describes the effects of subsidence on various commonly occurring surface structures such as roads, overland conveyor belts, pipe lines and power pylons. It is concluded that while most structures are not specifically designed to accommodate mining induced displacements, they can nontheless be undermined safely and economically with only minor precautions.

The need for geophysicists to adopt a uniform mode of expressing the electrical resistivity of geological formations has been stressed by Dr. A. S. Eve.1 The present paper is to emphasize the point he raised, to bring the weight of disinterested authority to bear on the matter, and to urge the adoption henceforth, save in exceptional cases, of a standard expression for resistivity; all in the hope that the needed reform will thus actually be brought about. The general definition of the resistivity of a material is the resistance in ohms between two opposite faces of a unit cube of that material. No account need be taken here of the cases in which the unit volume is not a cube, and the units of length and cross-section are different, encountered principally when dealing with metallic conductors such as wires. The idea of the resistance of a unit volume of earth or rock has found expression in geophysical literature in a number of forms and with a variety of units. Fortunately, the metric system has been adhered to in most cases, so ordinarily the meter or the centimeter, usually the latter, has been the measure chosen. The resistivity is then the resistance of a cube of the given rock, or soil, one centimeter on an edge. This is far from always being the same thing, however, as the resistance of a cubic centimeter. A long thin wire could contain a cubic centimeter and have a high resistance, whereas the same volume formed into a flat plate would have an entirely different, and quite low, resistance between faces. Consequently, it is not proper to express resistivity in ohms per cubic centimeter, inch, etc., as has been done occasionally by some writers. In an effort to emphasize the idea of cubic volume, some geophysicists, the writer among them, have used the phrase, ohms per centimeter cubed. This is a graphic way of picturing the measure, but is not in favor among highly qualified authorities. In this connection, an appeal was made to the U. S. Bureau of Standards for advice, and the Director, George K. Burgess, kindly replied in detail as to the practice adopted by his Bureau: 'I.., such expressions as 'ohms per centimeter cubed' or any similar expressions are objectionable, because they certainly carry the implication that the resistivity is found by dividing ohms resistance by the volume in cubic centimeters." The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 delegated to the Bureau of Mines a yearly program of health inspections. Respirable coal mine dust concentrations are measured by Bureau inspectors. Samples of respirable coal mine dust are weighed to determine dust concentration and then analyzed for ash and quartz content. This paper describes the laboratory procedure for determining the percent quartz in the respirable coal mine dust samples.

The ore body at Elura contains fine grained galena and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite. A differential flotation circuit concentrates lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The lead section, shown in figure 1, was sampled in detail previously and the metallurgical performance assessed on a size by size basis. That assessment took no account of liberation and given the fine grained nature of the ore body, this could lead to an incomplete picture of the flotation performance. Liberation measurements were made using the QEM*SEM system on four size fractions of samples taken from seven different streams in the lead section. Using the mineral flows obtained from the mass balance around the lead section an excellent liberation balance was obtained which enabled the effect of liberation on the flotation performance to be assessed. The measurements indicated that only 17 per cent of the galena and 28 per cent of the sphalerite in the flotation feed was liberated. On the other hand 31 per cent of the gangue iron sulphides were liberated. The final concentrate was largely composed of locked galena and locked iron sulphides with 85 per cent of the product being locked. There was a small but significant fraction of liberated pyrite.

El presente estudio señala la historiografía, geología, mineralización, tamaño, forma de estructuras y controles de la mineralización en el yacimiento minero de Antamina, Ancash. En 1850, Leonardo Pflücker fue el primer propietario y operador de Antamina. Posteriormente Vicente Lezamet trabajó en la región hasta 1914 obteniendo matas de cobre de 32%. Es a partir de 1951 que la Cerro de Pasco se interesa por el yacimiento, adquiriendo derechos de propiedad, e iniciándose el proceso de exporación hacia 1953. Con la experiencia y resultados de la primera campaña, se realizó la segunda etapa de exploración, culminándose en 1958. Los minerales más importantes son los granates verdes y marrón-rojizos seguidos de la clorita. La topografía del valle de Antamina es glaciar con valles en forma de "U" y está rodeado de lagunas de 30 hectáreas con una represa natural de roca. De otro lado, Antamina es un ejemplo de "metasomatismo de contacto", donde en los depósitos del mineral, existe un contacto entre un intrusivo y los sedimentos que lo rodean. Existen tres zonas en el área de Antamina: la zona de "Laberinto" situada al lado SE del valle, la zona lamada "Taco" al NW del valle, y "Usupallares" situada a un kilómetro al SW de " Laberinto". De las tres zonas señaladas, la primera, es la más importante puesto que allí están emplazados dos cuerpos mineralizados con leyes comerciales. El principal control de la mineralización son los agregados de cristales de granate, los que a su vez, obedecen a controles que no han sido todavía explicados con claridad. Sin embargo, los pliegues, fracturas y zonas de cizallamiento, constituyen controles importantes. Finalmente, dadas las características de este tipo de yacimiento, el proceso de exploración resulta muy costoso, requiriéndose gran número de labores para encontrar y delinear las zonas mineralizadas.

One of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross-sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance of a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure, in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the e1etrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. The design of entry systems and mining panels in room-and-pillar oil shale mines seeks to optimize extraction while ensuring both short- and long-term stability of mine openings. Important criteria for optimization include the definition of allowable roof spans and minimum pillar dimensions. Factors considered pertinent to the design of roof spans and pillars are discussed in this paper. They include, but are not limited to, physical properties and grade of the oil shale, depth of burial, presence and frequency of partings and joints and adverse effects of blasting. Also discussed briefly are some of the ventilation and production considerations in mine design.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. It highlights how the best short-term ventilation infrastructure upgrades can be selected when considered in isolation but highlights that long-term production planning can have an effect on the decisions made in the short-term.CITATION:van den Berg, L, Podreka, M and Merry, P, 2013. After accepting the invitation to make this appearance today, it occurred to me that the subject matter which had been assigned to me, namely, the purpose and role of an advisor, was, contrary to what; some people might think, a controversial subject. In my brief lifetime, I have discovered that the world is full of advisors; that is to say, there are many people who undertake to render advice concerning subject matters upon which they may, or may not be qualified to speak. It shall be my purpose today to set forth what now appears to be the function of the members of the Advisory Council to the U. S. Public Land Law Review Commission; and, in so doing, I hope that I do not offend the Commission or any other-member of the Advisory Council with whom I serve. It has always been my personal conception of the role of an advisor that he should tender advice when it is requested, and then only if he has prepared himself concerning the matter upon which the advice is being given. I am sure it was the Congressional intent at the time the Public Land Law Review Commission was established indeed it was the hope. of Congress--that those of us who were to become members of the Advisory Council were informed upon certain particular subjects and then at the proper time express our opinions upon these subjects-and, by the same token, not attempt to enter opinions upon problems with which we have no experience in theory or in actuality. Some wag once said that if Columbus had had an advisory council, he would still be waiting at the dock in Spain, and there is more truth than fiction in that statement. With this problem in mind, let us examine the purpose of the Advisory Council itself.

Studies in grinding efficiencies carried out at the Midvale plant of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. and at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. Were made possible by the cooperation of these two companies with the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Mr. Alan Probert of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. and Mr. E. C. Peterson of the International Smelting Co., devoted their entire time to the work during the respective tests, and their services are hereby gratefully acknowledged. The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) provides for the unparalleled ability to ensure the safety of the workers, the public and the environment. Although small spatially, the system can vary the airflow from 31.2 to 217.1 m3/s (66,000 to 460,000 cfm). The system can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and they can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote-monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based real-time mine-ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

BHPÆs Cannington process plant was commissioned in October 1997. The Cannington ore contains high grades of silver, lead and zinc but also contains high levels of fluorine which must be removed to produce a marketable concentrate. As a consequence the plant is more complex than the typical base metal concentrator. Some of the features of the Cannington operation include a single stage autogenous mill, multiple stages of flotation cleaning, two leach circuits, pressure filtration and a paste fill plant. The start-up and achievement of design performance for new lead/zinc operations has traditionally taken much longer than for gold or copper operation and is littered with many tales of woe with feasibility targets often not achieved (Agarwal, Brown and Katrak, 1984; Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999; Leung, Andreatidis, Woodall and Alford, 1996; Sherman, 1999; Ward, 1998).

The purpose of this study is to obtain carbon dioxide emissions by copper production systems and quantitative merit to use copper scraps in Japan. Electrolytic copper and sulphuric acid originating from the refining gas are produced in the system. In this study, the inventories such as the fuel consumption of the unit processes and the in-house electricity generation were obtained from published papers and public statistical data. The following observations were made based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method: (1) Carbon dioxide emissions from the production of electrolytic copper and sulphuric acid in the system are about 1.0 kg and 0.4 kg/kg-product respectively. The carbon dioxide emissions attributable to the transportation of copper concentrate correspond to 20% of the total emission. This emission is higher than that of zinc because the metal content in the concentrate is lower than zinc. (2) The carbon dioxide emissions from the system decrease with the recycling of copper scrap to the converting process because the consumption of copper concentrate is reduced. The reduction is estimated to be 0.18 kg-CO2/kg-Cu at the point of 0.1 kg-scrap/kg-blister Cu. This corresponds to 9% reduction for the present system. However, this recycling leads to the decrease of sulphuric acid by 450x103 tonne at the point. The recycling of scrap should be evaluated not only from the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, but also in terms of sulphuric acid demands as well as advantage of waste management.

The selective flocculation, desliming and flotation process developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs is described. The application of the selective flocculation and cationic flotation process to three oxidized taconites from the western Mesabi Range in Minnesota is discussed. Data from the operation of a 408-kilogram-per-hour (900 lb/hr) pilot plant employing reclaimed water are summarized for the three types of oxidized taconites.

"The corrosion of stainless steel SS316L in a low melting point novel LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3- NaNO2 eutectic molten salt mixture was investigated at 695K. After long-term isothermal dipping corrosion experiments, the SS316L samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) to determine the topography and corrosion products. Dense and protective lithium iron oxide scale formed on the surface and prevented the SS316L sample from further severe corrosion. Therefore, SS316L is considered to be suitable construction material for solar thermal energy storage materials containers.IntroductionMolten salt mixtures have been considered as potential candidates for thermal energy storage and heat transfer media in solar energy applications. To apply the molten salt in the energy transfer process, the standard pipes made of stainless steel must be utilized to carry the molten salt mixtures in parabolic trough system of solar power production. The pipes encounter continuous flow of hot and cold molten salt every day. Thus corrosion of stainless steel in molten salt mixtures becomes extremely essential for the long-term utilization of the thermal energy storage media. The corrosion of passivity materials inside high temperature molten salt systems have been studied which gives fundamental understanding of basic mechanism about the corrosion process [1-8].The corrosion behavior of Fe-Ni-Cr alloys in an equi-molar LiNO3–NaNO3–KNO3 mixture was studied [9]. According to the XRD analyses, the major phases in the oxide scales were identified as LiFeO2, Fe3O4 and Cr2O3. A HITEC® salt mixture (NaNO3–NaNO2–KNO3) was also tested as a corrosion medium for stainless steel [10] and the corrosion rate was found to be affected by the protective oxide layer. In most cases, the alloys having more than 10wt% chromium show high resistance to corrosion in molten salts."
