Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. Granites are classed as igneous rooks; they have been formed by the solidification of rook magmas or Solutions from deep within the earth. It is an almost invariable law of nature that mamas which cool quickly form fine-brained or glassy rocks, while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser-grained. Granites, being of the latter class, are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly, the crystals interlocking with one another. The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities.

In this paper, the removal of fluorides and chlorides from blast furnace dusts by water vapor enhanced microwave roasting was investigated, combined with the advantages of microwave selective heating and based on a thermodynamic analysis of zinc and lead halides. According to proposed reactions in the process, detailed experiments were systematically conducted to study the effect of roasting temperature, holding time, air flow, water vapor flow rates, and stirring speed on the efficiency of the removal of F and Cl. The results show that 97.26% of F and 64.23% of Cl could be separated when the condition of the roasting temperature of 650°C, stirring speed of 80 rpm, holding time at 60 min, air flow of 350 L/h and water vapor flow rate of 8 mL/min was optimized.

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951. This paper describes the application of regression analysis for obtaining a two-dimensional areal description of heterogeneous reservoirs from short-term pressure-time data such as that obtained in interference tests. The method replaces the time-consuming trial-and-error procedure commonly used to match field data on an electric analyzer or digital computer with a systematic search which is programmed for a computer. The computer program adjusts the properties of a reservoir model automatically until a least-squares fit is obtained between observed and calculated pressure data. The reservoir is simulated by a single-phase, compressible, two-dimensional model. It is divided into a number of homogeneous blocks whose transmissibility (kh/F) and storage (Fch) values are varied to obtain the least-squares fit. The reliability of these values is determined from their standard deviations and correlation coefficients. Although the method is rigorously applicable to single-phase flow only, multiphase flow can be handled provided saturation changes are small during the test. Possibly the method can also be used to obtain a reservoir description from pressure-production history, but this application is outside the scope of this work. The paper includes, in addition to a description of the numerical procedure, a discussion of some of the problems associated with the method. Rules are given to help in selecting the number of homogeneous blocks and deciding upon their arrangement. The uniqueness of a reservoir description is considered. Finally, the use of the method is illustrated by the interpretation of field data from two interference tests. INTRODUCTION Pressure data from short-term transient tests, such as single-well and interference tests, are widely used to obtain reservoir properties. These tests are usually analyzed by assuming a simple reservoir model; very often, a homogeneous one is used. As a result, analysis of the transient data from each well frequently gives different values for reservoir properties. The problem then arises to combine all these differing results into a more detailed picture of the reservoir. One technique is to simulate the reservoir with a digital computer or with an electrical analyzer and to adjust the reservoir parameters by trial and error until the simulated pressure data are in reasonable agreement with the observed pressure data for all wells. Although this method has been used for both transient tests and pressure-history data, it is time-consuming and subjective. A second technique uses regression analysis to replace the trial-and-error procedure with a systematic search that can be programmed for a digital computer. Use of regression analysis in reservoir description was proposed recently by Jacquard and Jain.1 They divided the reservoir into a number of homogeneous blocks whose properties are varied until a least-squares fit is obtained between observed and calculated pressures. However, they did not consider their technique to be operational, mainly because of ".. .(I) the lack of experience in using the method .. . notably for the improvement of convergence; and (2) limitations imposed by the insufficiency of available computers". 1 While the analysis presented in this paper applies the same general principle used by Jacquard and Jain, the specific method is significantly different. Some differences are (1) the regression problem is solved in a different way which requires less computer time in most cases; (2) a stepwise solution, in which the detail in the reservoir description is increased from step to step, is used to improve convergence; and (3) the reliability of the estimated reservoir .properties.. as measured by their standard deviation and correlation coefficient, is estimated'

Of the many organic impurities present in Bayer liquor, sodium oxalate is known to have one of the most detrimental effects on the Bayer process. Because of its limited solubility, it will co-precipitate with gibbsite during the precipitation stage which results in many operational challenges for the refinery. Despite the importance of this phenomenon, the interaction mechanism between gibbsite and sodium oxalate is not well understood. In this study, the growth of sodium oxalate on three main morphologies (random agglomerates, prims and hexagons) of water-washed and caustic-washed gibbsite was observed under synthetic Bayer conditions using in situ optical microscopy. After a short induction period, oxalate started to nucleate on gibbsite crystals, and grew with a needle-shaped morphology which eventually developed into oxalate bundles. In addition, the results indicated that caustic washing was able to partly decompose gibbsite crystals and thus make the gibbsite surface rougher, which provides more potential sites for oxalate nucleation and growth. The growth rate of oxalate crystals on the basal (001) face of water-washed gibbsite was 1.33 µm/min determined by the time-lapse imaging of in situ optical microscope.

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the integrity of the existing shutoff valves and actuators used under high-temperature conditions in the Bureau of Mines' horizontal borehole methane drainage pipe- line system and to determine the potential for improvement in the system. In the field tests, both fire-safe ball valves and standard brass ball valves were initially subjected to a 30-min pan fire without thermal protection. Neither valve could maintain line pressure beyond 11 min in a fire that reached temperatures between 500° and 700° C. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the brass ball valve used in the Bureau's methane drainage pipeline system can be retrofitted with an inexpensive "fire bag" to substantially increase its integrity under mine fire conditions.

Differences in the electrical conductivities of copper powder sintered under reducing, selectively oxidizing, and neutral atmospheres are related to impurities in solution or as precipitated oxides. The precipitation of impurities as oxides during sintering in nitrogen is proposed for maximizing the conductivity of sintered copper. Conductivity equations for two-phase systems are summarized. Selected equations are applied to porous sintered copper and composite structures. A recent review of the influence of impurities on the electrical conductivity of copper by Gregory et al.1 emphasized that an impurity in solid solution has a much more pronounced effect on reducing the electrical conductivity than when present partly or wholly as a second phase. When impurities in solid solution can be precipitated as oxides, the copper is purified with respect to these elements and the conductivity is increased. Cast and wrought copper, therefore, frequently contain an intentional residual oxygen concentration to oxidize and precipitate impurities less noble than copper. Copper powders generally also contain impurities which can contribute to a reduction in the electrical conductivity of the sintered material. The most deleterious impurities commonly found in commercial copper powders which markedly decrease the electrical conductivity when in solid solution but which can be precipitated as oxides include iron, tin, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel. In addition to impurities, porosity in sintered copper also contributes to a reduction in the electrical conductivity. The work reported herein discusses the influence of impurities, sintering atmospheres, and porosity on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper. These are important factors for controlling the electrical conductivity of materials such as sintered copper electrical contacts. Several publications on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper and composite materials with random pores or obstacles have incorrectly considered the conductivity to be proportional to the volume fraction of conducting material. However, analyses and equations have been proposed, the earliest of which is perhaps Lord Raleigh's of 1892,' which more accurately describe the conductivity of two-phase systems. These equations which in many cases allow one to closely estimate the electrical conductivity of porous sintered materials and two-phase composites will be reviewed and related to the measured electrical conductivity of sintered copper, copper-graphite. and Ag-W composites. INFLUENCE OF IMPURITIES AND OXIDIZING, REDUCING, AND NEUTRAL ATMOSPHERES Zone-Melted and Leveled Copper. The electrical conductivities of an electrolytic copper and a lower-purity compacting grade of copper powder after consecutive treatments in reducing or selectively oxidizing atmospheres are compared in Fig. 1. The powder and drillings from the electrolytic copper ingot were melted and solidified in a graphite crucible under hydrogen. The vertical zone leveling technique of multiple passes in opposite directions was used to obtain a uniform distribution of impurities. The electrical conductivity was measured on machined specimens 3 by 0.10 in. diam of the zone-leveled material and after the same specimens were consecutively treated as follows: 1) heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr; 2) heating in air in a sealed tube so that 0.04 pct 0 was introduced; heating was started at 1000°F for 1 hr and continued at 1800°F for 8 hr; the stepwise diffusion treatment was used to avoid loss of copper due to evaporation of copper oxide at higher temperatures; and 3) final heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr. A L&N Kelvin Bridge, type 4306, and a test fixture with knife edges 2 in. apart were used to measure the room-temperature conductivity with an estimated accuracy of ±0.5 pct. In all cases the conductivity of the electrolytic copper was approximately 100 pct of IACS. The conductivity of the impure copper was 80 pct of IACS both in the cast state and after heating in hydrogen. However, after the heating in air, the conductivity of the impure material was 100 pct IACS. After again heating in hydrogen, the electrical conductivity decreased to 60 pct of IACS. This decrease is attributed both to the dissolution of impurities and observed intergranular cracks due to the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittle-ment in copper. These data show that the electrical conductivity of commercial copper as represented by a compacting type powder can be increased significantly by the precipitation of impurities as oxides through heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere. Sintered Copper Powder. A commercial compacting type of copper powder pressed to various densities was sintered either in nitrogen, dissociated ammonia, or dissociated ammonia followed by a selectively oxidizing atmosphere of air in sealed Vycor tubes so that 0.06 pct O was added to the material. The electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the pressing direction on as-sintered specimens of approximately 3 by 0.25 by 0.15 in. This paper is intended to give the reader an update on the work being done at the Mackay School of Mines about the fate of cyanide on precious metals mill tailings waste. During the last two years several tailings impoundments have been sampled and analyzed for total and free cyanides. From our sampling program we are beginning to learn valuable information concerning the fate of cyanides in precious metals mill wastes. Included in this paper is a detailed description of our sampling and analytical techniques. Also, some of the data obtained from five sites are given.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed porous beads containing immobilized biological materials such as sphagnum peat moss for extracting metal contaminants from waste waters. The beads, designated as BIO-FIX beads, have removed toxic metals from over 100 waters in laboratory tests. These waters include acid mine drainage (AMD) water from mining sites, metallurgical and chemical industry waste water, and contaminated ground water. Following the laboratory studies, cooperative field tests were conducted to evaluate the metal adsorption properties of the beads in column and low-maintenance circuits, determine bead stability in varied climatic situations, and demonstrate the beads' potential as a viable waste water treatment technique. Field results indicated that BIO-FIX beads readily adsorbed cadmium, lead, and other toxic metals from dilute waters; effluents frequently met drinking water standards and other discharge criteria. The beads exhibited excellent handling characteristics in both column and low-maintenance circuits, and continued to extract metal ions after repeated loading-elution cycles. Based on laboratory and field data, cost evaluations for using BIO-FIX technology to treat two AMD waters were prepared. Operating costs for BIO-FIX treatment, which ranged from $1.40 to $2.30 per 1,000 gal of water treated, were comparable with chemical precipitation costs.

During the past two decades, we have witnessed the computer revolution. Like other revolutions, it has been successful in many ways; however, it has not been without difficulties. One of the areas where these difficulties have been more prevalent has been in the application of computers for the purpose of controlling industrial processes. During the early 1960's, many people naively assumed that bridging the gap between data processing and process control was a simple matter of connecting a few wires, doing a little programming, laying off most of the people and watching the plant make great increases in production as the lights on the computer blinked on and off. Unfortunately, it has not been that simple. Instead, a whole new-set of disciplines has been required to overcome the major obstacles that exist. Nevertheless, current successes are proving that the digital process control computer is here to stay, and that through the application of digital computers an attractive return on investment can be obtained in many applications.. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some of the requirements for successful implementation of computer control systems, with particular attention to the following four objectives: First: Acquaint the reader with the general control problems so that he may more fully recognize the major requirements for successful implementation. Second: To acquaint the reader with the types of control hardware that can be considered for use in the development of control systems. Third: To discuss some of the major obstacles that must be overcome for successful implementation of computer control systems. Fourth: To discuss the systems approach in the development of control systems and to illustrate it in the implementation of an actual control system.

The initiation of a panel cave is an extremely important and infrequent event in the life of a large underground caving operation. A new cave was initiated at the Henderson Mine in 1991, 15 years after its first cave had been developed in 1976. The original cave was started after a half billion dollars had been invested in the development of the mine, mill and 23 km haulage system. Many things had changed since 1976, the most significant of these being much lower realizations for molybdenum. In 1976 the high demand for molybdenum and uncertainty of caving characteristics, formed the basis for a very conservative cave initiation sequence with miles of boundary weakening and inspection drifting. In 1991 the highly competitive molybdenum market in conjunction with 15 years of caving experience made for a very different mining climate.

At Renlou Coal Mine, Huaibei Mine Area, the track entry deformed significantly after longwall mining in an overlying multiple seams. The supporting characteristics of primary roof bolts and shotcrete with wire mesh are closely related to the movement of the mine?s surrounding strata. A case study of a track entry deformation was monitored during the longwall mining of a selected overlying panel. The measured data showed the unique entry deformation pattern during the longwall mining in the overlying seam. Underground extensometer measurement showed that entry stability was mainly affected by the periodic roof weighting of longwall mining in the overlying seam. The displacement of the deeper strata occurred a head of the immediate vicinity of the entry. Thereafter, deformation of the roof and floor strata was in the form of shearing of the shallower strata. Due to the use of heavy-duty roof bolting with wire-mesh, the roof-tofloor and rib-to-rib convergences were small, but the floor heave was large, greater than 80% of the roof-to-floor convergence. The measured displacement from extensometers varied with the position of the monitored cross-sections and depth into the roof. There were several deformation patterns, such as shearing movement, compression, and expansion, and the variations between compression and expansion. Strata compression at the entry surface was always accompanied with shearing movement at the deeper strata. During the longwall mining, the whole surrounding strata of the entry moved toward the opening. Underground practical experience indicated that prior to mining, the entry was supported very well in excellent conditions. After mining, however, it deformed greatly. The current entry support technology was not effectively control the severe deformation incurred in entries driven in soft strata due to the following reasons: (1) little is known about the entry deformation behavior of the strata surrounding the opening and (2) the degree of interactions between entry deformation and roof bolting with wire mesh is not well understood. Consequently, effective supporting systems cannot be properly selected to control its deformation and maintain a stable supported surrounding structure.

"The Red Lake Mine is situated in Balmer Township, Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario. It is an underground mine that has been in production since 1948. The property was originally known as the Dickensen Mine and was shut down in 1996.A feasibility study was carried out in 1998 and it was determined that a new mill should be constructed with a throughput rate of 600 stpd. The life-of-mine average gold grade was projected to be 1.35 oz/t with gold predominantly associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite. Metallurgical testwork indicated that the optimal flowsheet for gold recovery would include an autoclave for oxidation with a carbon circuit for adsorption. To limit capital cost and establish cashflow, the mill was constructed without an autoclave. The recovery by gravity and cyanidation was projected to be 83%. A flotation plant was constructed at the tail end of the circuit to recover the additional gold associated with sulphides from the leach circuit tailings. This material is being stockpiled onsite for future oxidation treatment.Detailed engineering was started in early 1999 and the first gold was poured in August 2000. One feature of the project was the use of Contact Lake equipment from Cameco’s Contact Lake project. The entire mill was purchased and equipment re-used where possible. The capital cost for the process facilities was C$3 1.5 million."

MINING method improve through the gradual process of evolution and in 1340 there were no marked outstanding innovations. On the other hand refinements of detail and betterment: in equipment design continued to progress. Among the most important changes have been the increased application of trucks and highway equipment, including tractors and bull- dozers, to open-pit mining as exemplified by Phelps Dodge's Morenci operations; the Mesabi iron range; and the Tri-State district. Mass or bulk handling contributed its part underground with slurhers and conveyors at Consolidated Coppermines and slushers at Climax; and in open-pit mining. conveyors found increased use on the Mesabi range.

This paper, covering Chaffee, Fremont, Gunnison, Lake, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties, Colo., is the second of a series reporting on the tungsten potential of the Colorado region. The assembled information was obtained by examination of some properties, personal contacts with owners, and access to unpublished reports by other engineers. The tungsten-bearing areas of the 7 counties cover approximately 400 square miles and are in 10 distinct areas, which vary in size (fig. 1) from 1 square mile up to 290 square miles. The tungsten mineral wolframite was discovered by a man named Hackay near Dale on the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad in the early 1900's, and wolframite and hubnerite were noted at Climax and the adjacent areas in Lake and Summit Counties at an early date, but no records of shipment from any of the areas are available before World War II. It is not known when scheelite was first discovered, but it was recognized in the Stockton mine during World War I. In the counties listed 64 properties are known to contain tungsten; of these, 18 have had some commercial output, although only 3 of them produced in 1953. The total production through 1953 is estimated at 115,000 short-ton units of tungsten trioxide. In 1953 by far the major portion came from the Climax mine.

The probability of detachment of quartz particles from air bubbles during bubble oscillations was investigated by means of a vibration method. Theoretical calculations of the detachment force based on the work of Nutt and Schulze for a single spherical particle show a correlation with the experimental results described. However, the forces that were determined experimentally were considerably lower than the theoretically derived values. Some of the factors which were expected to affect the probability of detachment, such as particle size, bubble size, collector concentration and vibrational acceleration, were also investigated
