"Rapid growth of conducting and/or insulating InP, GaAs, Gao.47In0.53As, and GaAs0.6Po.4 on one or more of (001), (110), (111)A, (3ll)A and (3ll)B surfaces by Hydride Vapour Phase Epitaxy (HYPE) is demonstrated. The maximum growth rate of the binaries lies between 12 and 300 µm/hr and of the ternaries between 7 and 170 µm/hr. A simple model is developed to describe the influence of crystallographic orientation on temperature dependent growth rates. The growth rates predicted by the model is compared with the experimental values. Room temperature resistivity of insulating InP:Fe can be as high as 5xl09 ohm cm. Temperature dependent differential resistivity is also analysed. This feasibility of growing conducting and insulating layers rapidly on different orientations is very useful for electronic and optoelectronic devices.IntroductionRecently there is a renewed demand for very thick layers of III-V compound semiconductors for high performance electronic and optoelectronic devices [1]-[2]. Long wavelength high speed lasers that can be modulated up to 30 GHz necessitate epitaxial growth of semi-insulating (SI) layers [3]. There is also an increased interest on the growth of epitaxial layers on surfaces other than (001) surface. Epitaxial growth of these materials on such surfaces is of theoretical importance besides being technologically relevant. These demands led us to focus on the growth of conducting and insulating III-V compounds by Hydride Vapour Phase Epitaxy (HYPE). lnP, GaAs, Gao.471no.s3As on lnP and GaAso.6Po.4 on GaAs were grown as conducting materials using Low Pressure HYPE (LP-HYPE) on (001) 2° off substrates. Gao511no.49P on (001) GaAs substrate and lnP on lnP substrates of (001), (110), (l 11)A, (31l)A and (3 ll)B orientations were grown as semi-insulating materials using Atmospheric Pressure HYPE (AP-HYPE). In this report we present the growth aspects of these materials. We also present a simple model on the growth of InP on substrates of various orientations. The theoretically obtained temperature dependent growth rates are compared with the experimental values. Differential resistivities of semi-insulating lnP grown on substrates of various orientations as a function of temperature are also summarised."

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. The test program information provided for some immediate changes on the upcoming contracts and in contract administration for the I-880 Replacement Project. Plan sheet modifications included changes to the pile data tables showing the actual demand load required for structural stability. The normal class of pile with a minimum load carrying capacity was removed. This provided for substantial pile length reduction at several locations since the structural loading was much less than the predetermined pile class ultimate capacity. New specifications were developed and standard specifications were modified to accommodate the newer foundations, installation procedures and pile acceptance criteria. Current Caltrans specifications require that the Contractor provide bearing capacity at the specified tip elevation. This requirement was removed and pile acceptance was determined by the Engineer. Acceptance criteria was established by the State and was based on. set-up trend over time. Static loading tests were reduced especially in areas where testing was performed on the indicator program. Testing procedures were modified and set-up periods were established before piles could be tested. For the contract near the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge (Unit E) the FHWA 1000 tons (8.9 MN) test beam configuration was completely changed. This provided added safety and allowed more tolerance in the pile placement for the testing operations. Indicator piles were added as companion piles to the static loading test piles. These piles were used for restrike events which included collecting dynamic data for calibrating the wave equation analysis with static load test results. Indicator piles also provided quick access for restrike events, where as, the static loading test pile needed modification to perform the restrike operation. Penetration rates were recorded for these operations. Wave equation Analysis Program (WEAP) was used in developing the acceptance criteria. The standard Engineering News Record (ENR) formula in the current Caltrans' Standard Specifications was removed for the contracts. Contractors were required to submit, prior to driving piles, a driveability study for their contract. These studies required discussion of their operations, method of installation, effects of soil set-up, set periods, hammer settings, bearing graphs, inputs to the WEAP program and complete a "Pile and Driving Equipment Data" form. Dynamic monitoring was detailed in the specifications on how the monitoring process was to occur. Set periods were established and restrike events were called out with the frequency of these events.

Scrubbing of simulated copper reverberatory furnace gases containing 1.0 percent sulfur dioxide with the minus 74 ~m fraction of the San Manuel tailings has shown sulfur dioxide removals of almost 100 percent over an effluent pH range of 3.1 to 4.6 and a wide range of liquid to gas ratios with absorptions of 11 to 17 Kg of sulfur dioxide per tonne of minus 74 um slimes. The high reactivity of the tailings slimes with S02 indicates that the reaction rate is not controlled by the slow dissolution of calcium carbonate in sulfurous acid which characterizes scrubbers using ground limestone. The interpretation of these results has been considerably enhanced by wet chemical analysis and emission spectrographic analysis which show that calcium and iron account for about 90 percent of the SO2 absorption with the rest being accounted for by aluminum, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Mineralogic examination confirms the, chemical and spectrographic analyses showing that the major constituent removed from the slimes is calcium carbonate, with lesser amounts of chlorite and montmorillonite (silicates containing iron, magnesium, aluminum, and calcium) being removed.

Extensive gold mining activity û dominantly alluvial û has taken place in the Sofala-Wattle Flat district since the 1850s.This work will have located most, if not all, of the visible sources for the gold in current stream systems.Also, there are many gold bearing elevated Tertiary alluvial terraces in the district which may confuse possible gold signals from primary hard rock sources in the streams.Associated element signatures eg As and other chalcophiles, will discriminate non-alluvial signatures but will not necessarily distinguish non gold bearing mineralisation.Both trace elements and conventional gold analyses will dominantly re-identify known occurrences. Conventional BCL sampling is considered misleading as experience from the Oberon area to the south of Sofala demonstrated that BCL sampling was very sensitive û perhaps too sensitive.All occurrences û major or minor û of gold will be detected (Gatehouse, 1992). To improve on BCL sampling, a small, -120# sample with selective duplication was recommended to screen coarse-grained gold anomalism and a program of sampling covering an area thought to be prospective was enacted.Samples returning anomalous Au were analysed in duplicate and if the results demonstrated reproducibility, indicating fine gold only, the sample site was assigned a high priority.It was found that most of the reproducible samples clustered in one area û Spring Gully. The results of this sampling program led to immediate identification and, ultimately, the successful delineation of the Spring Gully gold deposit near Wattle Flat.

For the roadway design in the German hard coal mining industry, an advanced combined planning system has been applied during the past 20 years. The German mining industry is working with single entry roadways system. After first longwall passage the roadways will be stabilised with side wall building material packages. Later this roadway will be used again for the second retreating longwall. The intention of the implementation of several different design methods for the planning of the roadways is to enhance the reliability of the results. On one hand the planning system uses numerical simulation and physical modelling in addition to analytical and empirical methods. On the other hand in-situ monitoring and analysis during the roadway development will be used to verify and calibrate the numerical and physical models. Especially before the implementation of new support elements in underground, this system is suitable and reasonable because the new support elements will be tested in the physical and numerical simulation prior to cost intensive underground tests. The interaction between the numerical and physical modelling in comparison with underground monitoring and analysis during development and the later use of roadways will be shown with some examples. The first example shows a rock bolted rectangular roadway which will be mined at both sides of the roadway. Different support and roadway building material package systems are investigated under various stress conditions. The results are utilised to optimise the roadway support and the roadway side package systems. The influence of different points in time of the installation of several support elements in a combined arch and bolted roadway is shown as another example. Two different types of support systems are compared within the physical models. These models are used as a base for ongoing numerical analysis and simulation to find out the ideal point of time to assemble the different support elements. The last example handles the influence of slickensides in the roof of arch shaped roadway on their stability. Different slickenside positions and densities are investigated and classified.

The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. It is true that Honman offered convincing evidence of the sedimentary origin of the jaspers...

"If the final goal of metallurgy is the extraction of metals from a given ore, everyone knows that this achievement relies on many separation steps involving much more than a biphasic material made of metal and gangue. Nevertheless, still today, most of the design and follow-up of industrial processes only consider metal grades; in best case metal grades per size class. Working with such heterogeneous material, made of several minerals, with different grain size and texture, implies to consider finer ore models to be able to predict the behavior of material and the subsequent operation performances. Analytical tools are now available to provide such relevant and accurate data which are applied in geometallurgy. To achieve a true geometallurgical approach for process design, but also for optimization, accurate process simulation absolutely needs to combine these fine ore models with the corresponding unit operation models. Based on generic, but configurable, criteria of description and a hierarchical approach, the material modelling tool embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator provides the necessary flexibility to describe any type of ore with almost no limit in the level of details and associated physical properties that can be met in the mining industry. The simulation engine and the mathematical models of unit operations are designed to manage such a diversity of material modelling. The paper present various ore models and some of their applications in flowsheet simulation. It proves the interest of this detailed and advanced approach to accurately predict plant performances. INTRODUCTION Process simulation used for process design and optimization requires accurate unit operation modeling. During the last decades, main efforts of the different teams developing software simulators have been dedicated to those models for comminution and physical separations such as flotation or gravity concentration (Kojovic et al., 2012, Soni and Yoon, 2014). In most case, the ore is modelled with a size distribution and metal or mineral grades. A water phase is considered for wet processes. The association of unit operations and such material models generally allows, after some parameters adjustment, to achieve good agreement between experimental and simulated data. The use of the obtained simulator to test alternative configuration of circuits or settings of equipment devices can be accurate enough as far as the ore processed is close to the ore used for simulator adjustment. However, when the ore gets very different grades, coming from different mineral proportions or grain sizes, the simulation results can be of poor accuracy. Because any physical separations such as gravity, magnetic or flotation, do not sort metal and gangue but particles, made of minerals, containing metals, the only way to be accurate enough for allowing extrapolations, is to model particles. The phase model tools embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator gives this possibility. However, as such level of details are not always available for analyses, the tool has been designed with a high level of flexibility, to adapt the model to the available data. In this paper, the principles of this conceptual modelling tool are presented, and some application cases illustrate the material model flexibility and its interest."

WHAT is the likelihood if any-that a real gold mining industry will be developed in the southern Appalachian region? Has the increase in the dollar value of gold from $20.67 to $35 per ounce potency to turn the trick? Suppose it be assumed that the price of gold will, at worst, not recede, and that the cost of digging ore and treating it of which the average level of commodity prices and wages is a fair index-will, at most, not exceed that prevailing in 1926. One may or may not accept these as reasonable assumptions; but one must arbitrarily remove some of the potential variables if one is to get anywhere on a problem like this. As a matter of fact, this article is not going to venture a conclusive answer to the question that has been posed; but it will endeavor to present some of the factors that have a bearing on the problem. The writer spent ten days visiting a dozen properties in Virginia and the Carolinas early in April, 1935, and in doing so got a first-hand slant on mining conditions in the domain of King Cotton.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. Snavely, of the United States Geological Survey, for their aid, data, and maps.Bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district in 1912 on lot 187 of the 28th land district, in Sumter County. Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" It seems to me that when a material is' sintered in this way, the constituents present, as lime, silica, and alumina, have a chance to form a compound with the iron oxide; that such a compound, if formed before the material goes into the blast-

This paper describes a study of seismic records from the Kiirunavaara mine footwall which were interpreted in relation with numerical models developed outside the study. Seismic data was retrieved from a portion of the mine and filtered with respect to the ratio between energy carried by an event's P (primary) and S (secondary) waves (Es/Ep ratio), local magnitude, and active mining depth. The data was analysed using Es/Ep ratios and Gutenberg-Richter graphs to determine the event origin, mechanisms, and minimum magnitude cut-off. The magnitude completeness was identified by studying the b-value stability and b-value differentiation between origin sets. It was shown that, by separating seismic events into the origin components shear, complex, and tensile based on Es/Ep ratios, a representative value for the magnitude completeness can be identified for a catalogue with a convex cumulative log curve. The majority of the events were shown to be of shear-slip origin based on the recorded Es/Ep ratios, with pure tensile events constituting only about 10% of the recorded data. Spatial and temporal event location patterns were studied and compared with numerical modelling results. The comparison showed a correlation between shear-slip seismic events and volumes experiencing high differential stresses in the lower part of the footwall. In the upper part of the footwall the results did not reveal any clear correlation between observed damage in drifts and seismic event locations. The concentration of seismic events in the lower portion of the footwall is discussed in the context of rock mass displacements. The results indicate a possible connection between mine seismicity at depth and damage observations in the drifts in higher non-seismic areas by seismic softening and subsequent lateral expansion of the rock mass.

After years of processing copper porphry ores, the Ray concentrator of Kennecott Minerals Company installed a concentrate regrind mill in its flotation circuit. The first cleaner concentrate is reground rather than the usual rougher concentrate. An additional cleaning of the reground product yields an increase in copper content of the final concentrate and a significantly lower insol content. The desired goal of decreasing the energy requirements for smelting the concentrate has been achieved.

It would be most difficult to place a date on the beginning of the revolution in analytical techniques that we have witnessed in recent years; but there is no question that the period since the end of World War II has seen a major change in thinking with respect to control and accounting analyses. For reasons relating to competition, much of this change was brought about in the chemical industries and only more recently has begun to affect directly the mineral industries. In considering the subject outlined in the title of this paper, one might well be tempted to discuss solely the more exotic methods of control and automation which have come into being in the past short while. In this paper, however, an attempt will be made to take a broader view and consider not only the application of newer purely physical methods of control but also those phases of chemical plus physical analyses that have bearing on our industry.

Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., in its Florida Operations, uses both roller mills and ball mills in dry grinding of phosphate rock. The roller mills have been in operation since 1954 in the Mining Department. The ball mills were installed and put in operation in 1960 in the Harding Concentrate Superphosphate Plant. The roller mills in the Mining Department are used to grind phosphate rock for outside customers. This involves short notice orders of varying grinds, grades and types of rock. The ball mills grind phosphate rock for use in V-C's own phosphoric acid and concentrated superphosphate plant. These mills grind generally two types of rock for one grind. In 1959, a 10% speed-up was made in the operating speed of the roller mills. This paper deals with the operational gains and resulting cost savings which evolved from this speed-up, and compares the present operations of the roller mills and of the ball mills in grinding phosphate rock. In January 1959 it was decided to determine the feasibility of reducing the grinding cost on the roller mills, per ton of rock ground, by speeding up the mill 10%. At this time, one mill was completely reconditioned so it would be in top condition. Extensive tests were then run both before and after the mill speed-up to determine the resultant cost savings. These tests showed that, due to this 10% speed-up, the mill capacity was increased approximately 20% and grinding power costs per ton were reduced approximately 10%. Table I shows the results of these tests. Each test run actually represents several of the same type rock and grind, averaged together. Each test run lasted approximately three hours. The validity of these runs has been confirmed by subsequent operation in grinding over 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock. Accurate records have been kept on power consumption and repairs as well as tons produced. Two types of feed rock were used for the tests — pebble phosphate rock and flotation phosphate concentrate rock. The pebble phosphate rock size is approximately 80-90% plus 20 mesh. The flotation concentrate phosphate rock size is approximately 15% plus 20 mesh and 95% plus 100 mesh. The same two types of rock feed were used for all the test runs. Test Nos. 1, 2, and 3 were run at the original mill speed of 85.5 rpm on the vertical shaft. Test No. 1 was run with a feed of high grade flotation concentrates; the desired fineness attempted was 70% passing 200 mesh. Tests No. 2 and No. 3 were run with a feed of low grade pebble. Test No. 2 was run for a desired fineness of 70% passing 200 mesh. Test No. 3 was run for desired fineness of 50% passing 200 mesh.

The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. The reaction is A method for estimating the standard ~nolav entropies and standard entropies of formation at 298°K of the sul-fides of refractory metals is presented. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"' could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.
