The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

This paper is one of a aeries being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included if available. In addition to descriptions of equipment and methods used the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made, This paper is particularly concerned with the operation of the Liberty quarry and plant of the Campbell Limestone Co, The plant is in Pickens County, adjacent to the main line of the Southern Railway, and is about 18 miles west of Greenville, S, C. At the last Annual Meeting of the Institute, Dr. C. V. Corless sketched the potential mineral wealth of Canada so clearly, graphically and with-all so entertainingly that one's imagination was fired with the promise held out to future generations for the tremendous expansion of the mining industry in the Dominion. Posterity will undoubtedly witness the fruit of much of the geographical search and survey that is now carried on by our government mining departments. Year after year the work advances, slowly but surely, new areas are . explored, older areas are surveyed in detail, the information being compiled in maps and reports of incalculable value to the prospector, the engineer and the general public. The immensity of the task of exploring, geologically, the outlying portions of the country, with the ultimate view of making valuable mineral discoveries, may be visualized from a study of Dr. Corless' paper and the subsequent discussion which took place and one becomes impressed with the fact that three-quarters or more of the problem can be included under the word "transportation". For instance Dr. Corless said, "The few geological explorers who have penetrated to these remoter regions . . . . . . have as a rule been compelled to stick closely to canoe routes,"; Dr. Goodwin remarked, "This barren Laurentian granite, which is put down on the maps as covering the greater part of this area, is the best guess the geologist could make from travelling along watercourses Within the next few years . . . . . . the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway will undoubtedly be extended to James Bay . . . . . . In order that we may be prepared for the probable influx of prospectors when transportation facilities to tidewater are provided, I think all available information on this district should be gathered together in handy form." All three-Corless, Goodwin and Cole-emphasize the well-known fact that explorers, geologists and prospectors working in new country must stick to the watercourses and that transportation by rail, road or water has always been the all-important deciding factor in facilitating the exploration and development of remote districts. Dr. Corless did, however, suggest other means of transportation in stating, "The aeroplane will be of assistance in future study of some parts of these remote areas."

Keywords: Electrocoagulation, arsenic removal, fuel cell, windmill, energy simulation, combined Fe-Al electrode assembly Arsenic contamination of well-water in different countries has caused signs and symptoms of arsenic poisoning. Although several physicochemical treatments are presently used for the removal of arsenic compounds from drinking water, an electrochemical treatment, electrocoagulation, is a promising processing technology and currently is the most efficient (above 99% removal) and environmentally friendly technique, particularly if combined with alternative energy sources. Wind and fuel cell technologies can be considered the most promising developmental clean power sources. We will discuss new insights into the materials processing mechanisms and show the coupling of electrocoagulation with fuel cells and simulated wind energy sources. Different electrocoagulation plate materials were considered, along varied currents from the fuel cell to produce maximum arsenic removal. Coupling these technologies will remove carcinogenic arsenic from water sources, and will exhibit efficient usage of these energy sources by producing pure water for human and agricultural consumption.

FricRiveting technique is an alternative new spot joining process developed for thermoplastic-lightweight alloy structures. In this technique a cylindrical metallic rivet is used to join one or more thermoplastic / metal components by means of plasticizing and deforming the tip of the rotating rivet through frictional heating. Advantages of this new technique are e.g. short joining cycles, minimal sample preparation, absence of environmental emissions and enhanced mechanical performance in comparison to base materials. Qualitative and quantitative synchrotron X-Ray microtomographic and light optical microscopic analysis of a case-study joint on aircraft materials polyetherimide and aluminum 2024 showed that joint strength is mainly dependent on aspect ratio of the rivet (geometrical dependence) and quality of joint, (microstructural dependence), whereby increasing aspect ratios and lowering the percentage of defects usually yield improved strength.

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs. A mathematical model was developed to assess the costs for reclamation of surface mining using the shovel overcasting operation, the front end loader operation, and a backfilling operation. A literature review was made of the present laws in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia pertaining to surface mining and of the various parameters that influence the input data for a mathematical model. It was determined that the working mathematical model would have to be applied on an area to area basis, preferably on a permit by permit basis in the area where surface mining was being done. To this end, a flexible model was developed with input data obtained from the area of study. The results of the study show that the cost per ton of coal for reclamation can be estimated for various reclamation levels. Validation of the model was done for selected permits from Virginia. It was determined that the permits could easily be used for input data to the model.

"The agitator design for nickel high pressure acid leach autoclaves (HPAL) is critical with regard to the process result, i.e., the recovery rate. Further considerations during the design phase are the avoidance of acid hot spots which reduce the lifetime, due to corrosion of the wetted parts, including components manufactured from titanium. Besides the process knowledge to design HPAL autoclaves, tools such as, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supplemented by lab testing allow the design of optimized agitation systems. This paper describes the effect that different feed point locations have on instantaneous blending of the reactants. Furthermore, experiments and CFD show where abrasion issues might occur and how to obtain information about the static and dynamic forces acting on internals. We show how simulations can be validated by lab testing to ensure that the CFD models are applied in an appropriate way.INTRODUCTIONAgitated systems in hydrometallurgical processes have to comply with multiple process tasks and in many cases have to withstand extreme operation conditions such as pressure up to 50 bar, elevated temperatures of up to 250°C and exposure to very acidic or alkaline environments and abrasive ores. The process tasks range from instantaneous mixing of reactants, homogeneous suspensions of up to 65% wt. solids with coarse and heavy particles, enhancing the solid-liquid mass transfer for leaching, dispersing large volumes of reactants (gas-liquid, liquid-liquid mass transfer) and moreover to transport generated heat e.g., from exothermic reactions through the vessel walls or internal heat exchangers if required. For economies of scale, agitator systems have reached sizes of 5000 m³ for large open leach tanks with impeller diameters of approx. 6 m, while autoclaves nowadays have exceeded 5.5 meters in diameter with a power demand for a single compartment drive between 300 - 400 kW. In parallel all process industries require a more efficient use of resources, to generate less by-products and higher yields, while ore-bodies tend to be less qualitative and new process routes (e.g. direct leach) are developed. Besides all these facts the mixing solution must be robust and economic. In this paper we want to address our approach in the development and designing of HPAL agitation equipment."

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site in Lead, South Dakota is currently under construction and involves drill and blast excavation of the largest and deepest caverns in North America. This paper will review how the geotechnical risks are being managed through careful consideration of excavation sequence, completion of exploratory pilot tunnels, implementation of a robust instrumentation and monitoring program, and validation against the design. Aside from having a cross section of 5,900 square feet and being situated at a depth of one mile, the caverns also employ a unique permanent rock bolt solution which underwent a significant pre-production pull testing program involving varying installation methods and being subject to blast vibrations. The behavior of the schistose rock mass and performance of the ground support are being continually monitored throughout the construction phase.

THE installation of the gas-producer power-plant in America has been so unusual that all engineers have viewed it with in¬terest; a large majority, however, regard it with a lack of con-fidence and many with positive distrust. Despite the fact that European engineers have usually been less inclined to take the initiative along experimental lines than are Americans, they have, nevertheless, developed the gas-producer plant to a very high state of efficiency to which they were forced by the neces¬sity of economy in fuel-consumption. The gas-producer power-plant is so common in Europe that engineers as well as the general public regard it with the same degree of confidence that is now universally placed in steam¬plants. Gas-engines, both small and large, are in general use there, and central stations, aggregating several thousand horse¬power, are quite numerous. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple-entry section of the Bureau's Bruceton Experimental Mine. Four-hundred-pound Pittsburgh Seam coalbeds were ignited and allowed to burn until well-developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires, and the quantity required to extinguish the fires was compared with the quantity of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 5.8 gal to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 8.1 and 8.0 gal, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 7.4 gal. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, and the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, in situ vat leach mineral recovery system concepts are described and cost compared with conventional mining and pad and autoclave leach processing systems. In the proposed systems, leachable ores are enclosed in place in reagent-impermeable in situ vat constructions. The ores are then rubbled and flood leached or flood oxidized and leached. The in situ vats are called stope leach or stope autoclave vessels. The report also proposes ore body-adjacent in situ vat constructions containing rechargeable processing stopes. A series of ore body-specific, innovative, and conventional mineral recovery systems case study designs are described and prefeasibility level costed. Based on a comparison of these prefeasibility level cost estimates, the proposed systems are determined to be economically competitive with conventional min¬eral recovery systems. The in situ vat leach mineral recovery systems concepts for leachable and refractory ores are developed around the drill-split narrow-vein and longwall mining methods described in part 1 of this Information Circular series.

This: report gives data on the installation and operation of a packaged-unit heat-pump installation in a residence in McLean, Va., a suburb of Washington, D. C. The original equipment, installed in January 1947, was one of the first of 50 experimental Marvair units manufactured by the Muncie Gear Works, Inc., Muncie, Ind. The compressor unit of this installation was replaced by the company in September 1947, with a modified commercial model. The commercial unit and the original pump and fan accessories have been used as the sole means of heating (and cooling in summer! the. residence for the subsequent five winters and summers. The conclusions and data given herein, therefore, cover 6 winters sad 6 summers of heat pump operation, including 1 winter when temperatures averaged below normal for 2 months and the following summer when temperatures were above normal.

The Washoe plant, 1 in Anaconcla. Mont., together with the local street-railroad, ranches a. foundry and machine-shop a brick-plant and the Montana hotel, form a property under one management; to which should be added the mines in Butte owned by the company, from which part of the ore-supply of the plant comes. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., controlled by the Amalgamated Copper Co., was reorganized under the laws of Montana in 1893. A map of the plant, showing the numerous departments and illustrating the details of tracks, pipe-lines, and charging-stations for compressed-air locomotives, is given in Fig. 1.

This report documents a preliminary hydrologic investigation of an area where longwall mining methods are to be used. The scope of work includes: determination of physical and chemical characteristics of major soil types in the area; determination of physical and chemical properties of surface water bodies; collection of geologic characteristics, including stratigraphy, structure, and detailed aquifer descriptions; collection of 10 years' meteorological data and installation of a weather station; and a detailed ground-water investigation that includes completion of observation wells, aquifer testing, water quality sampling, and analysis using a 3-D computer model. The Trescott model developed by USGS was used to simulate steady-state aquifer conditions. Input data from 8 multiple-completion monitor wells were used to model an area of approximately 10 square miles. Two layers, coal and overburden, were simulated, both confined. Model results showed good agreement with know piezometric data, desaturated areas, and flow from springs. The study area was found to have very low-yield bedrock aquifers with transmissivities ranging from 5 to 320 ft2/day for the coal (depths from 500 to 1,200 ft) and from 499 to 576 ft2/day and fractured sandstone units (depths less than 100 ft). Annual precipitation and recharge are very low, 10 to 11 inches and 0.25 inch respectively. The area has very high relief and large areas of rock outcrop. No perennial streams are present on the site.

"Rio Algom's Stanleigh Mine and Mill Operation Was' officially started up in August 1983. In September 1982, Rio Algom contracted Estonix International Inc. from Lively, Ontario, to develop and implement two innovative programs: (1) Work Renovation Planning, and (2) Systems Performance Training. This paper deals with the development and implementation of these two concepts relative to the plants technology from start-up to present and the exceptional results achieved. This paper discusses how a small but motivated workforce resulted in the smooth transition from startup to full production. It also deals with how these concepts were applied elsewhere in the organization which permitted a successful transition and downsizing of the over-all operation.IntroductionRio Algom Limited produces uranium in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the late 1970s Rio Algom entered a contract with Ontario Hydro to supply uranium from its Stanleigh property, which had been idle since 1960. The mine was subsequently upgraded, and a new modem mill was designed and built, commencing operation in 1983.From then until September 1990,Rio Algom had three producing mines and mills in the Elliot Lake area. Quirke mill, with a capacity of 6350 tonnes per day, operated continuously from 1968. The Panel mill with a 3000 tonnes per day capacity, operated since 1979. Stanleigh mill continues to operate under long-term contracts, although at a production rate about 25070 lower than its rated capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.Both the Quirke and Panel mills, although not entirely similar, were conventional uranium mills utilizing crushing, grinding, leaching and ion exchange. As such, and in keeping with the traditional management style, there was a rather large mill operating workforce, which utilized a line-of-progression job classification system."

In the past few years, much effort has been spent in elucidating the impact of diesel engines on the mine environment. This paper summarizes diesel fundamentals , exhaust emissions and typical tailpipe concentrations. Mine sampling results and an evaluation of exhaust treatment systems are discussed. A review of changes in pollutant concentrations between the tailpipe and the mine exit is made and suggestions are given to reduce operator exposure to diesel contaminants.

At FHC Gold Company's Paradise Peak Mine gold and silver are produced. Precious metals recovery rates are very satisfactory along with the recovery and production of a relative high volume of mercury. At Paradise Peak precious metals are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe process and delivered to the refinery area as a mercury-bearing precipitate cake. The recovery of mercury is then obtained through a vacuum retort system. The balance of the material is mixed with fluxes and then melted and cast into dore' bars for shipping. Issues of retort capacity and concerns over efficiency led to research into the retort process itself.
