Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. Instability in rockpasses at deep levels often initiates as a result of stress induced fracturing of the rock on the walls of the pass. This may then progress to a stage at which the geological structure of the rock mass becomes dominant and permits large joint-defined blocks and slabs to become unstable. In this paper, a technique is described in which jointing parameters and their variabilities?orientations, spacings and lengths?are taken into account in estimating the extent of failure that may develop around a typical unsupported deep level gold mine rockpass. The results of this prediction are compared with the results obtained from a review of pass performance in the gold mining industry.

MR. G. G. BOWSER: Mr. Kalbhenn's paper is an excellent one and is a concise description of a very interesting piece of work. It is well known that a great deal of preliminary study was given to this job before the final plans were made. It is due to this thorough preparation .chat the work progressed so satisfactorily, smoothly, and safely. The ideas carried out in the construction of the hardwood pack, timbered compartment, inclined raise, loading chute, and steel-boomed room, all contributed to a successful conclusion of the work. The extra care in being certain that the compartment shafts were well timbered was especially necessary on account of the difficult blasting conditions. In other words, the foundations .of this job were well and truly laid. The blasting in this work was very difficult due to the nature of the Strata. Working under an ever precarious roof condition and completing .this job with only two lost-time accidents is a record of which to be proud. The shaft men engaged on this work are also due for praise. I regret I did not visit this work while it was in progress. It was not in lack of interest. This, however, more or less proves that the blasting end .of this job went along with practically no trouble. I have seen the nature of the rock, as I made several visits to the tunnels while they were being put through from the Phalen to the Harbour seam. According to figures in Mr. Kalbhenn's paper, the explosives consumption works out to 1.61 pounds per cubic yard of rock in the solid, or 0.8 pounds per ton. The explosives consumption in the tunnels ran from 2.86 to 3.46 pounds per cubic yard or an average of 1.58 pounds per ton of rock. Of course, the rock in the shaft was blasted in the most economical way possible, as far as powder costs are concerned, as the face advanced at close -wright angles to the strata and gravity was acting with the explosive. The tunnels were driven nearly 'end on' the strata and bottom holes had to be lifted, and I believe there was some re-drilling of ribs left in the floor. It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. To save time, the original solution of the iron in nitric and sulphuric acids was evaporated to dryness and heated as before until

"El presente texto señala las formas en que se presenta el sílice libre y las principales rocas constituyentes del material generador de la silicosis. En ese sentido, el ""sílice libre"" se presenta a través de tres formas: cristalizada, criptocristalina y amoría. Sus diversas variedades en forma de cuarzo son el cristal de roca, el cuarzo amatista, cuarzo rosado, amarillo, ahumado, lechoso, ferruginoso, etc. De otro lado, la presencia del cuarzo en las rocas ígneas sirve de base para su clasificación en ácidas, intermedias, básicas y ultrabásicas. Las rocas ácidas son las que contienen más de 10% de cuarzo, las intermedias menos de 10% de cuarzo y las básicas y ultrabásicas, carecen de este mineral en su esencia. Asimismo para determinar el grado de peligrosidad del polvo es necesario revisar la concentración de partículas de polvo, a través de una muestra y cuenta de los mismos. El muestreo se basa siguiendo diferentes técnicas basadas en principios fiísicos como filtración, estrellamiento, precipitación electrostática y térmica. Mientras que la cuenta de partículas se efectúa mediante un microscopio provisto de un sistema óptico standarizado y diferentes tipos de celdas (Dunn, hemacitómetro y la celda Hatch). Cabe aclarar que no es posible la comparación de peligrosidad de dos polvos, basándonos solo en el componenente sílice, sino que el tamaño de las partículas y la concentración en el ambiente, son factores a considerar para su evaluación. Entre los métodos importantes de determinación cuantitativa de sílice libre tenemos: químicos y físicos. Los primeros, utilizan la descomposición de todos los componentes de la muestra -con excepción del sílice libre-a través de un tratamiento ácido, mientras que los segundos son más precisos respecto de los polvos industriales y se realizan a través de análisis petrográfico, difracción de rayos y el método de fusión. GENTLEMEN, lt is with much pleasure I meet you tonight at this the second meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, held in Western Australia, and I sincerely thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me in electing me as your President. I greatly appreciate the distinction, and will endeavour to fulfil the duties of the office to the best of my ability, and hope to prove a worthy successor to those gentlemen who have held the position before me. On behalf of the local members of the Institute, I extend a hearty welcome to the members from the other States of the Commonwealth, who have come so far to attend this meeting, and also to the non-members whom we have invited this evening. We are especially pleased to have Mr. Gregory, our Minister of Mines and Railways, and the Government and School of Mines officials with us; and I take this opportunity to thank the Premier, Mr. Gregory, and the Government officials for the assistance given us, and for doing so much to make the visit of our members from the other States so pleasant and instructive. Helical piles and ground anchors were used to meet critical design and constructability requirements for an urban forest Canopy Walk at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta, GA. The 12-foot wide pedestrian walkway path was to be nestled among the treetops of a forest, extending to 600 ft. in length, and soaring 40 ft. high above the forest floor. Of particular concern during construction was that the foundation system for the temporary steel shoring system had to be non-invasive to the subsoil, could not damage the forest floor, trees, root systems, or foliage, and upon completion of the concrete walkway pour, could be removed, again without disturbing the subsoil. Accubrace, Inc. designed and installed all the helical foundation types, as well as provided steel braces, typically used in Tilt-Up building construction, for the walkway project. The braces, some extending to 43 ft. in length, were used to provide lateral support against wind loads for the walkway form. In addition, the braces acted as secondary support for lateral loads during the placement of wet concrete along the 600 ft. length of the walkway. Helical foundation products installed included vertical compression piles, ground anchors for tension rods, and ground anchors for the braces. The installation of the piles and anchors was particularly challenging since the forest floor elevation varied as much as 50 ft. due to the presence of a ravine. Information is provided on the subsoil conditions, required loads, design, installation, and acceptance criteria for each helical product type installed for the project. The results of vertical and lateral load tests on the helical piles in the pre-construction phase, conducted in conformance to project specifications are presented. Photographs to illustrate the nature and complexity of the project are included. The concrete pour for the walkway was successfully completed on December 12, 2009, and the walkway was opened for visitors in May, 2010.

The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.

"Comparing with the single electrode in electroslag remelting processes, two series-connected electrodes have the advantage of little inductance, lower power consumption and higher melting rate, which was widely used to produce superalloys and specialty steels. Detailed understanding of the electromagnetic field distribution is essential for both improving ingot quality and saving electric energy. In the present work, a 3D finite element model was developed for the magnetic field, electromagnetic force, current density and Joule heating field of electro slag remelting processes (electrode, slag and ingot) with two series-connected electrodes using Maxwell equation, Lorentz law and Joule law. The results show that the maximum current distribute occur at the middle of electrode, due to the interaction of selfinduced and mutual-induced of two series-connected electrode; associated magnetic flux density on the inner side of electrode increase and the outer decrease; The maximum joule heating is at the interface of slag and electrode. The parameter study shows that if the current frequency is greater than 35Hz, the current density in inner electrode tend to linear distribution; with the increasing of original current, The maximum current density near the wall in electrode will increase linearly; with the increasing of electrode innnersion depth and decrease of slag cap thickness and the maximum of the joule heat in slag will increase.IntroductionElectroslag remelting processes(ESR) are widely used to produce superalloys and specialty steels [l-3l_Two pair, four pair or six pair electrodes in electroslag remelting processes is common in casting large scale ingot, which has the advantage of little inductance, lower power consumption and higher melting rate, comparing to singe electrode. They have the same essence with two electrodes in ESR.Compared to the single electrode ofESR, the other electrode is added which can decrease the reactive resistance and power consumption in the two electrodes of ESR. It is a complicated metallurgy process with a series physical and chemistry phenomenon from the molten of steel to the solidification of ingot [4-71_ These physical and chemistry phenomenon originated the effect of alternating current of high intensity. The rule of the alternating current of high intensity which revealed the law of physical and chemistry phenomenon in ESR is the precondition of improving ingot quality and saving electric energy. Jihe Wei and Yongli Ren[S-9lstudied the distribution of electromagnetic field in single electrode ofESR with Maxwell equation and relative electromagnetic theory. It had the limitation that take the electrode and mold as infinite conductivity. A detail analysis of Electromagnetic fields in ESR had been conducted by Patel A D [JO-llJ using general stream-function formulation. It is difficult to extend to three dimensions which could not be used widely. Daniel V [lZJ and Kharicha A [BJ only analysis the current density associated magnetic flux density field and temperature field without the whole irlformation of electromagnetic field. Maopeng Geng [l4J considered the current density and temperature field of the real and fake electrodes in ESR without skin effect. As to the complication of the two electrodes of ESR, it is rarely reported the electromagnetic field and Joule heating field of the two electrodes in ESR. The rule of effect of electromagnetic and modification of numerical simulation should be studied in depth."

Moreover, an elevated fluorine content in copper concentrates may entail financial penalties and sales constraints. This review conducts a comprehensive analysis of existing methods for the removal of fluorine, presenting a nuanced assessment of their merits and demerits. It also provides valuable insights into the current landscape of fluorine elimination from copper concentrates and pinpoints pivotal areas warranting future investigation. This review endeavors to serve as a pragmatic resource for researchers and industry professionals operating within this domain.

Tool performance and the unit cost of cutting depend on a number of operational variables (peripheral velocity, pull-back force, water injection rate, angles of the sections of wire outside the rock) as well as on the geometric features of the cut itself (area and shape). Cutting rate and wire productivity are also influenced by the type and number of diamond beads per unit length of wire and by the characteristics of the rock (granite or marble). A computer program aimed at handling a problem of this complexity has been developed and tested with the use of available field and laboratory data and has been found acceptably reliable. Discrepancies between current industrial data and some of the results suggest future lines of research, while the simulation should also be extended to include different types of rock and tool and a variety of bench face geometries

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

Helical pile anchors have gained acceptance over the past sixty years. Most recently they have been commonplace in the 20th century for the power utility industry in anchoring transmission towers, equipment platforms, street lighting, telephone poles, and radio tower applications. They have a strong proven industrial track record in these industries. As the cost of conventional deep pile foundations rises, the practical benefits of helical pile anchors becomes evident as a practical alternative. Noted for their uplift capacity, helical piles demonstrate equally strong compressive capacity as a structural foundation element. This paper summarizes the history, practical benefits, and technical requirements for helical piles. Significant structural testing has been completed at various universities. The practical benefits of these tests are discussed. One case example of proven performance is presented to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of helical pile anchors as suitable foundation elements.

Based on the flotation features of coarse particle mineral, a new type of impeller & stator unit is developed. Particles suspension state generated by this impeller & stator unit under different speeds are tested in laboratory, and critical impeller speed suit for coarse particles flotation is presented. Comparing particle suspension parameters of the new impeller & stator unit with that of KYF impeller and stator unit, it comes up that the distance between the interface of two slurry circulation channels and the cell bottom is larger in the flotation cell with new impeller & stator unit. The test results indicate that the new type of impeller & stator unit is suitable for processing coarse particles due to its good suspension capacity for coarse particles. This report presents data collected during research by the Bureau of Mines on corrosion of grinding media. Corrosion rates of eight alloys commonly used in grinding media were tested in synthetic mill water using an ultrasonic grinding device especially designed for this work. Electro-chemical measurements showed variations in corrosion rates for these alloys between 9.8 mpy for medium-carbon steels and 0.14 mpy for high chromium white irons. Bureau data are discussed along with data from the literature to indicate that corrosion causes less than 10 pct of the wear of grinding media in commercial grinding mills. A comparison of corrosion rates for various types of grinding media shows that alloying elements and electrochemically active inclusions in steel affect the corrosion behavior of the media.
