Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has nude necessary a general survey of coking-coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begun in 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one of a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Letcher County, Icy. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced, and, (c) which coals cannot be upgraded by known commercial preparation methods to metallurgical fuel standards now accepted.

"The fatigue behavior of two high-strength sheet steels used to produce car bodies, a dual-phase steel and a TWIP one, both with ultimate tensile strength close to 1 GPa, is investigated.Unnotched tensile specimens are fatigue tested at room temperature with constant load amplitude and zero load ratio, in order to determine their 1 million cycles fatigue limit, both in the asfabricated sheet condition and after the resistance spot welding of one small homologous sheet square onto the calibrated length of the tensile specimen. Moreover, pre-cracked compact tension specimens are tested with load ratio 0.1 to determine the Paris fatigue crack growth curve.The fatigue results are completed with crystallographic, microstructural, tensile, and fractographic examinations, and the influence of the microstructure and of the welding processes is discussed.IntroductionCar bodies are increasingly made with high-strength weldable steels, in order to reduce vehicles' weight (to save fuel and reduce air pollution) and to improve the vehicle occupant safety in case of car crash. The main mechanical requirements of these steels in service are fracture strength and energy absorption, relevant for crashes, as well as fatigue endurance, relevant for ordinary car usage. [1]Steel sheets for car-body applications are usually made by continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, continuous annealing (or other continuous heat treatment), and protective coating (in some cases). The sheets are then cold formed (deep drawn) to produce car body parts. Finally, the car bodies are built by assembling several deep-drawn parts, often consisting of different steels, usually through the Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process, whereby two or three overlapping sheets are welded by local Joule-effect heating [2].Dual-Phase (DP) steels are widely used, low alloy steels with a microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite, obtained from a final heat treatment which consists of heating at an intercritical temperature and then quenching. "Hydraulic transportation efficiency and production optimization are considerations in the surface extraction of Athabasca oil sand deposits. To reduce the dependence on haul trucks, it is possible to extend the hydraulic transport system to production faces using a mobile at-face slurry system (AFSS). The flexible arrangement of connected pipelines transports slurried minerals from the mining face to the processing plant. An experimentally verified mathematical model indicates the friction loss of oil sand slurry associated with the AFSS. Laboratory-scale testing enables extended analyses for examining pipeline slurry transport in an oil sands environment.RÉSUMÉ L’optimisation de l’efficacité du transport hydraulique et de la production sont des considérations importantes dans le domaine de l’exploitation à ciel ouvert des gisements de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca. Afin de réduire la dépendance envers les camions de transport, on envisage d’étendre le système de transport hydraulique aux fronts de taille à l’aide d’un système mobile de transport des matériaux sous forme de boue à partir du front de taille (AFSS, de l’anglais at-face slurry system). L’organisation flexible des conduites reliées permet le transport de minéraux à l’état de boue du front d’exploitation jusqu’à l’usine de traitement. Un modèle mathématique vérifié de manière expérimentale indique la perte de charge par frottement des schlamms provenant du traitement des sables bitumineux associée à l’utilisation de l’AFSS. Des essais en laboratoire permettent de mener des analyses approfondies portant sur le transport de boues dans des conduites dans un environnement de sables bitumineux. INTRODUCTIONObjectives and scope of studyThe at-face slurry system (AFSS) concept has become a competitive means for materials handling to optimize haulage system efficiency and cost. The mobile and flexible arrangement of the AFSS introduces a unique set of hydraulic transport problems. This paper will focus on developing the mathematical models governing the friction and head losses within the AFSS concept.Background of the problemLarge-capacity shovels and dump trucks are increasingly used for excavation, loading, and hauling in the operation of surface mining. Production cost and efficiency optimization are demanded during the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) mining process to secure North America’s energy supply. Increasing haulage distances, rugged terrain, and a constrained mine environment are conditions that will reduce the effectiveness of the shovel-truck haulage system (Frimpong, Szymanski, & Changirwa, 2003). In such conditions, the tire heat index and weight, distance, and time limits for truck haulage can be exceeded, simultaneously creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. In addition to low production cost and equipment effectiveness, a mining environment also requires efficient waste-material recycling and distribution. Waste materials need to be recycled from the processing plant to a new destination such as a tailings dam, or replaced in mined-out areas such as backfill. The Athabasca oil sands configuration and location characteristics result in a mining environment that would benefit from flexible pipelines for constant production and an efficient waste-material recycling process."

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it. With the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1700s, platinum was labelled a nuisance for the Spanish in their quest for alluvial gold because it concentrated with the gold and had to be removed by either extended amalgamation or by hand sorting. It was at this time that platinum received the root of its current name for the Spanish referred to it as platina del Pinto, platina being the somewhat derogatory diminutive of plata (silver). Pinto was a river in Colombia where the Spanish first distinguished it. The English eventually adopted ?platina? and it is only in recent times that the Latin name platinum has been accepted as the metal?s common English name. From its first introduction to European scientists in 1740, platinum was unappreciated because of its brittle nature and difficulty of working and as a result had little commercial value. Its ability to be dissolved in gold did lead to some counterfeiting of gold bullion and even to the debasement of gold currency.

his paper reports an investigation aimed at optimizing the compaction of granulated hard-metal powder for the production of cutting tool inserts. The optimal compaction is that which yields optimal shrinkage during sintering, i.e. minimum porosity in the sintered part. Extensive compaction tests on 23 different hard-metal powders have been carried out and have shown that the ideal ?green density? of a hard-metal compact, i.e. the density after compaction, increases linearly with the apparent density of the powder. On the basis of this result, an equation has been derived, which allows one to predict the optimal shrinkage that a hard-metal compact undergoes during sintering once the following data are known: the required sintered density, the volatile content of the powder and the apparent density of the powder. Since these data are available to the tooling designer, this equation allows one to design tooling for the compaction of hard-metal, which leads to optimal shrinkage

The objective of this investigation was to determine how the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt in fayalite slags could be controlled for nickel mattes with iron contents below 5 wt%. Laboratory-converting and slag-cleaning experiments were carried out at 1250°C. Several variables were investigated during and after converting to help minimize the amount of nickel and cobalt that reports to the slag. The variables used were oxygen concentration in the blast, coke breeze addition and nitrogen injection stirring. In all the experiments, slag and matte co-existed. Coke additions during converting have little effect on the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt. In fact, coke additions retard the converting process by consuming some of the oxygen injected. On the other hand, coke additions and nitrogen injection applied after converting was completed resulted in decreased slag losses.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. The neural networks modelling approach is one of the most elegant black-box type methods to model industrial processes. In this paper, this approach is applied to model the performance of the CEZ zinc electrowinning plant. The model that was built was found to exhibit an excellent predictive ability for voltage and current density. The model was also used to investigate the sensitivity of the process to various key variables such as temperature, current density, zinc and sulphuric acid concentration, etc. Optimal regimes for zinc production were identified from the power consumption standpoint.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a multimillion US Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulphur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga tailings leach plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensued following its installation and start-up. This paper provides a technical and operational audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emission in 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States hid daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va., which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.3 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

The Canadian Hunger Foundation/PARTNERS in Rural Development (CHF-PARTNERS) has, over the past forty years, implemented more than 800 rural community development projects in some 38 countries of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Working with or for the Canadian mining industry offers both opportunities and risks. We can help a mining company ensure that the workers, their families and communities share adequately in the economic and social rewards from a mining operation in their area. We can contribute to the provision of sustainable livelihoods when an operation winds down. The company?s reputation as a good corporate citizen can be enhanced. On the other hand, mining companies and NGOs have generally very different values and missions. The risk of misunderstandings from conflicting motives and work practices is correspondingly high. Both partners must state their values and expectations clearly at the start of collaboration. The NGO must ensure that the company abides by acceptable ethical standards. It must not directly or indirectly subsidize a private company from its charitable donations. The mining company must satisfy itself that the NGO has the capacity, resources and experience to produce the results expected.

The design, development, and testing of hydraulic props to provide a lightweight, high strength, recoverable unit is described. Modifications in design incorporating threaded components resulted in the development of a lightweight hydraulic prop fabricated from aluminum alloy tubing. This new design facilitates interchange and replacement of component parts, and the physical properties of the material are not changed as they are when welding is required. The new prop is 65,000 pounds and has a maximum load capacity of a lower weight-to-load capacity ratio than the hydraulic props now available.

Over the last forty years, a number of specific fluidized bed applications in nickel extraction have been developed for commercial use. Five important processes have gained particular acceptance, namely, sulphide ore roasting, nickel sulphide (matte) roasting, nickel oxide reduction, laterite ore pre-reduction, and nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. These applications involve different feed materials and process conditions, however, all benefit from fast reaction kinetics and high heat and mass transfer rates in the fluidized bed reactors. They have been studied, tested, and implemented by various nickel producers, who have published their results in many papers and patents. This paper examines the design issues surrounding the application of fluidized bed technology to the above nickel processes. Based on the available data in the open literature, computerized process modelling is used to provide generic flowsheets that illustrate the key features of each process.

Minerals are fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 2.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $13.8 trillion in 2007 (Table 1). The prime interest rate decreased to 7.25 percent in December from 8.25 percent at the beginning of 2007, reflecting actions taken by the Federal Reserve Board to counter financial difficulties surrounding subprime mort-gages. Delinquencies on subprime mortgages increased throughout the year, affecting not only the delinquent home owners but also financial instruments invested in mortgage-backed securities. The average contract mortgage rate for the purchase of previously occupied homes in the United States was 6.35 percent in November; a slight decrease from 6.37 percent in January but still greater than 5.34 percent reported in July 2003, the lowest rate in the past five years. With the tightening of credit, the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for new privately owned housing starts declined 27 percent from December 2006 to November 2007. Chester Wells Purington was killed at Yokohama on Sept. 1, 1923, in the Japanese earthquake. Mr. Purington was born in Boston, Mass., Oct. 27, 1871. He prepared for his entrance to Harvard at the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard in the class of '93. He started out soon thereafter investigating gold deposits of the Appalachian system in the South and in 1895, made atrip to Alaska, investigating the gold deposits of that territory. The summer and fall of 1896 found him in the San Juan country of Colorado examining the gold and silver properties in the Telluride and Rico districts and in the La Plata Mountains. MEETING OF SAN FRANCISCO SECTION Twenty members were present at the meeting of the San Francisco Section, May 20, 1919. Chairman Bradley being in Alaska, vice-chairman, T. A. Rickard, presided. Prof. Frank H. Probert gave a short account of the activities of the governmental commission, consisting of himself, George S. Rice, and F. G. Cottrell, which recently visited Europe, and studied the coal, iron, salt, and chemical industries. When the work is finished reports will he issued. He gave a resume of the history of. the changes in nationality of Alsace-Lorraine and 'described the importance of the region for coal, iron, and potash. With the return of these provinces France will have an annual output of more iron ore than she has coke to smelt it with; hence, the importance of the Saar coal field. With these new mines France will take the predominant position in the iron and steel-industry formerly held by Germany. Many details were given of the devastated mines of France, and of their former value, production and the destruction that overtook them. Noteworthy is it that much of the damage was done as late as Oct. 28, 1918, for the express purpose of ruining the country industrially. The damaged area of the Valenciennes coal basin embraced twenty-four concessions, three were damaged by artillery bombardment, but have resumed operations since the' armistice, nine had their surface: equipment destroyed by battle, pillage, and sabotage, while twelve concessions at the eastern-end of-the field suffered from wilful, systematic destruction. Of the 285 shafts in the district, 172 were flooded either by: turning surface streams into them, or, by wrecking the cuvellage; thus, admitting water and quicksand from the water-bearing strata above the coal measures. Two hundred and thirty-five surface plants were damaged, many of them to such an extent that they must be scrapped. These properties gave employment to 135,000 men before the war and, even admitting the remote possibility of getting workmen, the terrible destruction and devastation makes housing and living a difficult problem. It will probably be from 3 to 5 years before the mines are drained and information obtained as to underground conditions; to attain the pre-war output may require from 12 to 15 years.
