Various influences determine how an Environmental Management System (EMS) for a mining or petroleum project is developed and administered. These influences include the environmental and resource legislation applying to the project, the culture of the organisation, the environmental sensitivity of the area, and the administrative policies of the regulatory agencies involved. While financial penalties and even imprisonment may be imposed for non-compliance with environmental legislation, there are other compelling reasons for the establishment of an effective EMS. If a company wishes to be considered by Governments for the grant of exploration or mining rights, it is important that it can demonstrate environmentally responsible operations at existing facilities. The development of an effective EMS requires commitment from the Board of the company and the issue of an Environmental Policy to empower all levels of the staff and workforce to achieve environmentally responsible operations. This must be supported by the provision of appropriate human and financial resources, and environmental training of staff at all levels from the Board to the mine site, workshop and office. A regular environmental auditing programme is essential to ensure that the EMS is in place and is effective in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and protection of the environment. An EMS can be developed on the basis of existing management systems, quality management systems, existing and emerging environmental management standards (such as BS7750 and ISOI4000), or sophisticated computerised systems which may incorporate international experience, standards, and codes of practice.

"Goldcorp – Eleonore’s 7 000 tonnes per day gold mill was started up in October 2014 and achieved commercial production in April 2015. During the first year, operation has faced challenges from grinding, flotation, sulfide cyanidation and tailing filtration to achieve targeted throughput, availability and recovery.The optimization of non-sulfide tails filter cloth lifetime and filter press availability had the most significant impact on ramp-up of both mill throughput and availability. A change in steel ball addition size to the grinding circuit was made to meet the targeted p80 of 65 µm. Various optimization efforts were conducted on the flotation circuit, intended to recover all sulfide-bearing minerals. The goal is to attain the environmental target of 0.12% sulfur in flotation tails (to eliminate acid mine drainage or AMD), while an average of 0.31% sulfur was obtained over the first months of 2015. Collectors, frothers, activators and hydrodynamic parameters were tested to improve the circuit desulfurization efficiency. High sulfide reactivity in pre-oxidation and cyanidation severely impacted dissolved oxygen levels and cyanide consumption. Studies were undertaken to understand the effects of mineralogy, grind size and leach conditions on gold dissolution kinetics and cyanide consumption. Efforts were focused on pre-oxidation to restore dissolved oxygen levels as well as optimizing both lead nitrate addition and pre-oxidation time.INTRODUCTIONGoldcorp Eleonore’s mill commissioning started in September 2014. It was considered to operate the mill at 3 500 tpd during design, as the mine was planning to operate at this throughput for the first year. However, with the stockpile of ore and a higher throughput from the mine, the mill was able to run at higher tonnage than initially anticipated.While increasing tonnage, a few bottlenecks were discovered and overcome in areas such as filtration and cyanide destruction. There were also recovery issues which were addressed in areas such as grind and sulfide leach. This paper focusses on the first complete year of operation ending September 30th 2015. A process description and the flowsheet are presented below and it will then go into detail about operational, metallurgical, mechanical and design issues experienced during the year."

The underground losses of oil exceed by hundreds of thousands of barrels all the oil that has been lost in storage, transportation, or refining. The quantity lost is, of course, indeterminate; but when it is considered that the contents of an entire oil field have been excluded from recovery by invading waters, some idea of the amount wasted may be gained. Similarly, enormous quantities of gas have been lost underground. Conservation of the oil, therefore, should start before it is brought to the surface rather than after it is placed in storage tanks. Water is one of the most important causes for underground losses and the operator should give as serious consideration to an underground flood of water as he would to a destructive surface flood. The best insurance, of course, is to have the wells drilled in such a manner that water has no access to the productive oil and gas horizons, and on abandonment the wells should be properly plugged. The encroachment of edge water and the occurrence of waterin;the base of an oil sand present a very serious problem to an oil company sooner or later these waters are bound to cause considerable damage, if they do not entirely destroy the possibilities of further production. Too often, however, a field has been considered to be in a hopeless condition, whereas wells in as bad a condition in other areas have been repaired and the life of the field appreciably lengthened. The corrections are very often suggested by technical study. Very successful results have been accomplished by detailed underground work in the California oil fields, in Cushing, Oklahoma, and in other areas. The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly1 general methods of analyzing oil-field water problems in a producing or in a producing and developing oil field, with a view to suggesting repair work on offending wells. Reference is continually made to producing oil wells; the same general method of procedure, however, should be adopted in a gas field.

"INTRODUCTION The Elk Mountain mica deposit was examined in June 1943 by the Bureau of Mines. An exploratory project and an access road for the property were recommended, provided the zinc was put in operation under competent management. K. Garard obtained a lease on the properly and started operations in June 1944; this was followed immediately by the Bureau's exploratory work. Road construction was begun by the Forest Service in July the same year.The lessee mined mica from the richest exposure with a crew of three men for 2-1/2 months. His operation terminated late in September, but the Bureau of Mines project and the Forest Service road construction continued until snow forced suspension of activity during the first week of November.The Bureau of Mines work consisted of trenching with a bulldozer, hand excavating on undeveloped outcrops, extending an existing adit, and starting a new adit below the older workings."

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

In order to use ZnO laden dust as a possible desulphurization reagent, it is important to evaluate thermodynamics of the Zn-O-S system. At temperatures greater than 1450 K, there is an uncertainty in the thermodynamic data for the reaction of zinc with sulfur to form Zinc sulfide. In this work, the standard free energy has been determined using an electrochemical cell: Pt, Mo, MoO2/YSZ/ZnO, ZnS, S02, Pt., between 1198 and 1602 K. AG° varies from -145,880 to -88,100 J (± 2500) , with a phase change to ZnS (g) by sublimation occurring between 1450 and 1460 K. This is supported by thermogravimetric analysis which shows about 80% weight loss in ZnS from 1273 to 1473 K. Feasibility reactions were also performed and confirmed that ZnS (g) is formed when ZnO reacts with FeS (1473 to 1653 K) or with Fe-Csat-S(1473-1673 K). There is therefore potential for the utilization of ZnO laden waste as an additional or alternative reagent for desulfurisation.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

A uniaxial compression experiment was conducted on standard sandstone specimens to explore the sandstone’s mutation characteristics and early warning interval during deformation and failure. Meanwhile, acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques were introduced to realize multi-field analysis and cross-validation from the stress field, deformation field, and elastic wave field. The mutation characteristics of rock failure were investigated based on the cusp catastrophe theory. The results showed four mutation points in the destabilization process of sandstone: compressional density, yielding, destruction, and residual retention. As an internal activity characteristic of the sandstone failure process, AE directly reflected the dynamic failure process of sandstone. The stress variation was closely related to the evolution of AE characteristics. Sandstone loading failure was a process of the mutations of releasable elastic strain energy, dissipative energy, and releasable elastic strain energy. The mutation of dissipative energy was used as the starting mark of the sandstone warning state, and the second mutation of releasable elastic strain energy was used as the end mark of the sandstone warning state. Besides, the warning range corresponded to the loading time of 178 to 208 s. Finally, the sandstone instability warning interval was re-determined from deformation field evolution characteristics in the sandstone damage process, with a loading time of 180–204 s. This was consistent with the warning interval specified using the cusp catastrophe theory. The combination of AE, DIC, and cusp catastrophe theory revealed the mutation characteristics and early warning interval of sandstone failure. Hence, the results provide significant importance to predicting rock failure.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. PALLADIUM has been used for jewelry for many years, particularly in conjunction with gold. This use increased in amount during the war, as palladium and gold were only moderately used for war purposes while demands for platinum and some of the other members of the platinum group were so great that their use in jewelry was prohibited. Palladium hardened with a small percentage of ruthenium has the necessary technical properties and appearance for good jewelry, and it is sufficiently rare to be desirable for luxury items-at least 100 times as rare as gold. Although both visual and spectrophotometric examination demonstrated that the color of palladium was almost the same as that of platinum, a few jewelers found the surface of palladium, even after some polishing, rather dark in areas that had been repeatedly heated during the soldering necessary to assemble certain types of handmade ornaments. This phenomenon is not to be confused with the thin, bluish oxide film that can be produced by heating in air over the range 400° to 800°C., as that film is easily reduced by dipping in warm 5 per cent formic acid or in warm methanol. It was suspected that the difficulty arose from heating in atmospheres that were alternately oxidizing and reducing, as Wise and Vines1 had found that this opened the grain boundaries of palladium and palladium-silver alloys in the same manner as in pure silver, as reported by Martin and Parker.2 This damage is caused by the reaction between oxygen in solid solution in the metal, acquired when heated under oxidizing conditions, and hydrogen diffusing in from subsequent heating under reducing conditions; the steam cannot diffuse out and therefore builds up sufficient pressure to disrupt the metal near the surface. Copper and various other metals can be damaged similarly, but platinum is nearly immune; therefore the problem was new to the platinum jeweler. Sulphur in the fuel gas also can cause trouble but did not appear to be dominant in the present instance. Metallographic examination of both pure palladium and ruthenium-palladium showed that the usual torch using oxygen and city gas as normally operated did in fact cause the surface and subsurface damage that had been observed, and also disclosed that a reducing flame caused more damage than an oxidizing flame and was very damaging even in the absence of any intentional swing in atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing (Fig. 7); besides the surface damage, there was serious loss of ductility. A full explanation of the mechanism of attack is not evident at the moment, but may be allied to the attack that occurs on heating catalytically active metals in nonequilibrium atmospheres.

"CMP will be an essential process in the production of integrated circuits containing copper interconnects. This study aims to improve our mechanistic understanding of the role that organic chelating agents might play in the reactive slurries used in copper CMP. Copper dissolution behavior in EDTA arid glycine was first examined by producing potential-pH diagrams for the copper-water-EDTA and copper-water-glycine 'systems. The results of potentiodynamic polarization experiments were then considered in light of these diagrams. . In-situ polarization experiments were conducted to gain insight into the electrochemistry of copper during dynamic polishing in slurries prepared from EDT A and glycine.IntroductionCopper has recently started to replace aluminum as the interconnect metal in integrated circuits. Copper interconnection offers faster and more reliable integrated circuits due to its higher electrical conductivity and superior electromigration resistance (1). The damascene method is used to form multilevel interconnects in the manufacture of integrated circuit devices with copper metallization (2, 3). Copper is deposited by CVD or electroplating into vias and trenches etched in the interlayer dielectric (IDL), over a diffusion barrier usually made from titanium, tantalum or their nitrides. Chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) then prepares the wafer for the next deposition step, by removing excess copper and planarizing the surface. During CMP, the wafer is rotated and pressed against a rotating platen covered with a polishing pad. Chemically active slurries containing submicron size abrasive particles (Si02, Al20 3, ceria, diamond, etc.) are applied. Both the mechanical action of the abrasive particles and the chemical action of slurry constituents remove material from the wafer surface. Planarization results because material is removed faster from protruding regions on the surface than from recessed regions. Since CMP can globally planarize .the entire wafer, it has become one of the key technologies for producing integrated circuits with copper metallization."

"INTRODUCTION The Connellsville mine of the Yolande Coal & Coke Co. is in the southwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. The mine is on the Blue Creek bed, which is about 6 feet thick and dips at a angle of 18º. The bed is worked by the room-and-pillar method and is mined by both machine and hand methods. The Blue Creek bed at this point yields a high ash, low-volatile coal with excellent coking properties. Because of its exceptionally low volatile content and high coking strength, this coal is excellent for blending with Alabama coals of higher volatile content and weaker coking properties to form blends suitable for production of metallurgical coke.A sample of washed coal taken during this investigation gave the following analysis on an as received"" basis: Moisture, 8.3 per cent; volatile matter-, 20.2 per cent; ash, 8.0 per cent; fixed carbon, 63.5 per cent. The high ash content of this coal limits the quantity which can be utilized when low-ash coke is required. In the Birmingham district it is usually difficult to sell as coking coal a product that contains more than 8.0 per cent ash. To produce a. coal with this ash content at Connellsville presents a somewhat difficult washing problem. This paper gives the results of an investigation that was conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Yolane Coal & Coke Co. for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the coal and the possibility of reducing its ash content on coal-washing tables.The practice at the Connellsville washery at the time of beginning this investigation was to crush the run-of-mine coal to pass a 1 1/2-inch round-hole screen and to treat the satire output on two primary, 3-compartment jigs. A. middling product was recovered from the primary jigs which was re-treated on a single-compartment rougher jig. This system yields a product of acceptable ash content, but the yield is low and the loss of good coal in the refuse is high."

Soil CO2 flux serves a critical indicator of ecosystem function and carbon cycling in disturbed landscapes. This study measured and quantified temporal patterns and environmental drivers of soil respiration across fifteen revegetated treatment plots over a 12-week period (July-October 2025). Utilizing automated CO2 flux measurements, we investigated differences between treatments and quantified their relationships with soil temperature, moisture, and atmospheric pressure. One-way ANOVA revealed significant treatment effects on CO2 flux (F4, 442 =14.1, p < 0.001, η2=0.113), with amended plots exhibiting 40–50% higher mean fluxes than control plots. Weekly temporal analysis demonstrated distinct temporal patterns, with peak fluxes registering in mid-August before a gradual decline. Multiple regression analyses showed that soil temperature (β=0.043, p < 0.001) and moisture (β=2.31, p < 0.001) are the primary flux drivers, together accounting for 18.2% of total variability (adjusted R2=0.182). Atmospheric pressure had a moderate effect (β=1.13, p < 0.001), detectable only in multivariable analysis. Variance partitioning indicated that environmental factors explained more variability (18.7%) than treatment effect (10.5%), with approximately 71% of flux variability attributed to finer spatial or temporal variability. These results demonstrate that revegetation amendments enhance soil biological activity and impact geochemical cycling, and that temperature and moisture are dominant controls on respiration dynamics in reclaimed mine soils. The findings provide quantifiable benchmarks for ecosystem recovery through altering soil biology and geochemistry and for quantifying carbon sequestration potential in post-mining landscapes.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. INTRODUCTIONWestern world gold production for the 1980s has shown rapid growth sustained by a demand for gold at a favourable price (Fig. 1). Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

The purpose of this paper is to summarize these findings as a guide to current practices. Fuel Saver Principles of Construction.—The operating principle of the leading makes of underfeed stokers is similar (Fig. 1). A plunger1 or slowly revolving worm2, conveys the buckwheat or rice sizes of anthracite to the center of a specially constructed tuyere pot where air is admitted to the coal through suitable ports of varying design. As the fuel burns, it is slowly forced to the outside circumference of the tuyere by the pressure of the incoming coal; eventually the ash falls over the edge of the pot, either entirely by gravity or aided by mechanical sweepers. In at least one model, the entire firepot revolves. While various special details have been included in the design of a number of stokers, they do not affect the general principles as described above, and therefore have not been included in this discussion.
