The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.

IN principle, production of salt from sea water is a simple operation. Sea water is trapped in ponds, the sun and wind cause evaporation of the water, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production of solar salt, however, requires a careful consideration of many factors. Obviously, sufficient evaporation must take place throughout the making season to produce an economically adequate crop. Other factors are density of soil, contour of ground, height of ground above sea level, minimum dilution from fresh-water streams, and distance from market. Unfortunately, in the United States the localities of greatest evaporation, allowing for the other factors, are not the most suitable for the manufacture of sea salt by solar evaporation. Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

The modified perchloric--EDTA method devised by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of copper in high-grade samples gives results that are more precise and more accurate than those from the classical sulfuric-iodometric method. Although the perchloric--EDTA method is more costly than the conventional method, the savings in time alone largely offsets this difference. Specifically, the modifications wade in the more conventional procedure comprise (1) use of perchloric acid instead of sulfuric acid for dissolution of copper minerals, (2) precipitation of copper as copper sulfide from dilute perchloric acid solution, (3) wet oxidation and dissolution of the precipitated copper sulfide, (4) use of larger amounts of indicator than those employed in the Schwarzenbach method of titrating low-tenor copper solutions with disodium ethylenedinitri10-tetraacetate and murexide indicator, and (5) use of refrigeration to partially stabilize aqueous solutions of the indicator.

Located on the Wabash River in the central portion of the state, the city of Lafayette, IN is relatively small compared to most cit-ies that incorporate tunnels into their combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems. The original CSO plan for the city was to replace two aging lift stations that were built in the 1950s. The original con-cept was to build a new sewer using conventional cut-and-cover construction to eliminate one of the lift stations ? the Parking Lot Lift Station ? and build a new regionalized one at the location of the Pearl River Lift Station. The initial sewer design was sized just to handle the flow that would eliminate the Parking Lot Lift Station. The planning for this project was being developed as part of the city?s CSO long-term control plan (LTCP) that focused on reducing the overflows from the city?s 14 overflow points. However, during the development of the CSO LTCP, a major industrial user indicated it would be increasing its flows to the system, which required additional conveyance capacity to meet the city?s CSO LTCP. After reviewing the design concepts with city representatives during the planning phase of the project, the mayor indicated that he wanted to minimize impacts to downtown businesses; therefore, trenchless alternatives were considered. The last piece of the puzzle that drove the project away from a small diameter pipeline was discovered during a flow monitoring program to collect flow data for the CSO LTCP project. This study revealed a major restriction in the 100-year-old Pearl River Trunk Sewer, located beneath four active railroad tracks. To eliminate this flow restriction, provide more overflow storage and reduce the impact to local businesses, a new 2.7- to 3.6-m- (9- to 12-ft-) diameter tunnel sewer became the most viable solution.

The Kiruna mine produced about 19 Mt processed iron ore in 1999 using sublevel caving. General failure in the hangingwall has been widely studied and its mechanism is rather well understood. Failure in the footwall is more recent and not perfectly explained. Plane shear failure and Hoek and BrayÆs circular failure charts were successfully used to match the first surveyed failure surfaces. The footwall is not free yet but covered by a caved waste rock abutment whose exact behaviour is poorly known. Based on new field data and numerical models (FLAC), the following paper presents recent improvements in understanding the Kiruna mineÆs footwall failure process.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100 000 mm of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity inNew Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.   The suitability of the tailings as a potential plant growth medium was assessed with the end view of revegetating the tailings dam and alleviating AMD. This paper outlines characterisation work conducted on the tailings and summarises preliminary results from plant growth trials. The tailings contain up to 5% Fe, 1.15 % Pb, and 0.45% Cu in the form of sulphide minerals. The distribution of heavy metals, sulphate and total sulphur with depth indicates that the top 200 - 300 mm of the tailings have been extensively weathered since their deposition. The oxidation of sulphide minerals, particularly pyrite (FeS2 ) has reduced the pH of the tailings to nearly 2 in places. Below 300 mm the sulphide minerals are largely unweathered and the theoretical acid generating potential of the tailings exceeds 170 Mg CaCO3/1000 Mg tailings at certain depths. Plant growth trials were conducted to study the effects of lime and organic matter addition on the establishment of vegetation on the Tui mine tailings. Several plant species were assessed including some cultivars bred for their tolerance of heavy metals.

"With ever decreasing feed grades, finer mineralogy and increased demand for product, it became obvious that a major step in equipment performance was required to reduce operating costs and increase production. Offsite testwork indicated that a Centrifugal separator was capable of recovering fine tantalum and that the newly developed C Series Falcon concentrator would be capable of replacing many pieces of aging equipment and provide improved performance. Further investigation led to the rental and the purchase of a Falcon C20 concentrator followed by a C10 to maximize circuit performance.Falcon Concentrators Inc’ s practice of working with the customer mirrors Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada’s (Tanco) philosophy of continuous product development. This synergy honed valve design for continuous operation in a highly abrasive ore environment.Tanco has recently purchased two more Falcon concentrators for the recovery of additional tantalum from its spodumene circuit. These new units have additional user friendly operating features partially based on developments made at Tanco.The Falcon C Series units have enabled Tanco to maximize recovery of tantalum that was otherwise lost while using the original conventional gravity circuit."

A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

Equilibrium data on the reactions of gases with carbon and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron are reviewed and correlated. A source of error in oxygen analysis of graphitic samples is exposed. New experimental data on the oxygen content of high -carbon iron in equilibrium with carbon monoxide indicate that the activity coefficient of oxygen is decreased by additions of carbon. The carbon-oxygen product decreases slightly with increasing carbon content. In recent years a number of investigations have been reported dealing with the equilibria between carbon and oxygen in liquid iron and gases containing carbon oxides. The laboratory study of these reactions dates back to 1931 with the publication of a paper by Vacher and Hamilton' on "The Carbon-Oxygen Equilibrium in Liquid Iron". The principal object of this study was to obtain data on the reaction shown by Eq. [3] below; their data and others by vacherZ permit evaluation of the other equilibrium constants as well. Subsequent studies have been reported by Matoba, Phragmen and Kalling and by Marshall and Chipman.5 The equilibria may be expressed by the following three equations: C + CO,= 2CO;Kl = Pc° [1] 0-+CO = CO,;K2=-P co, "0.PCO c + O = CO; K3 = In the equilibrium constants, ac and a0 are taken as equal to [% C] and [% 0] respectively in the infinitely dilute solution. At finite concentrations an activity coefficient is introduced such that ac =fc [%C], and so forth. It is to be noted that these equations represent only two independent relations, the third being derivable from any two. Richardson and Dennis have determined the conditions of equilibrium in reaction [I] at temperatures of 1560" to 1760°C. Their results have been confirmed by Rist and chipman7 who have shown how the data may be extended to cover the entire range of liquid compositions at temperatures from the eutectic up to 1760°C. An approximate confirmation has been reported by Fuwa and chipman.' These investigations also established the activity coefficient of carbon which was shown to increase rather rapidly with increasing concentration. For the very dilute solutions the value of Kl is expressed in the equation: log^i = - 7280/T+ 6.65 This equation leads to a value of Kl = 430 at 1540° C in excellent agreement with the average value of Marshall and Chipman.5 It is shown as line 1 in Fig. 1 together with the experimental observations. "Global population is a key factor in future energy requirements, especially considering the important elements of global energy resources, electricity production, the accessibility/non-accessibility of electricity, greenhouse gas emissions and the states of nuclear reactors. Everyday human requirements depend on industrial products, and industries need a considerable amount of electricity to run. Nuclear fuel is inexpensive and bolsters industrial growth. As uranium reserves are being consumed rapidly, an alternative source of energy in the nuclear industry is thorium. Here, primary energy supplies by various sources from 1993 to 2011 as well as estimates of future needs to 2020 are discussed. This study finds that primary energy sources are mainly fossil fuels, renewables sources, and nuclear and hydro energy. In addition, growth depends on increases mainly in renewable sources.Recovery of thorium from its ores by using hydrometallurgical routes were described and discussed. The final part of this paper was presented a case study of the thorium extraction from Korean monazite ore leach liquors by using Prieme JM-T diluted in A150 diluent as an extractant system. And possible separation of the thorium from rare earths (REs) and base metals were calculated by measuring of separation factors and finally, the recovery of thorium from loaded organic of Prieme JM-T was established.THORIUM IS FUTURE NUCLEAR FUEL?Global energy consumption is increasing everyday with the high population growth, high industrialization of numerous countries and the higher level of good and services consumption that follows it. If we look at specific sectors of the economy, oil consumption grew by 0.8 million barrels per day, globally, whereas the increase was 0.4 % for natural gas and coal 1.8 % for nuclear power and just under 2.0 % for hydroelectric power (Asheley 2009). Use of renewable sources of energy for power generation and transportation increased by 3% in 2014 (BP 2015)). Thus alternative source of energy must be identified and developed to meet this increasing demand. Thorium is a potential one for the nuclear industry."

Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. THE experiments here described were made under my supervision while temporarily acting as head of the Department of Metallurgy at the Missouri School of Mines, at Rolla. The work was done by Messrs. W. E. Brown, W. C. Richards, and F. L. L. Wilson, and the description of the results forms a portion of a thesis presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science. These results are submitted because I have seen no description of the application of pot roasting to the treatment of a copper-concentrate. This work followed that already described in the discussion of the ' Lime-Roasting of a Galena-Concentrate,"' and was similarly occasioned by the lack of a furnace of the reverberatory type in which the copper-concentrates could be smelted. The material for the tests was a mixture of three lots available. The first consisted of 8-mm. jig-concentrates and the second of 0.5 mm. table-concentrates, from the San Juan district, Colo. Both contained pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. The third was a lot of copper-ore, found in the laboratory, which had been crushed through 8-mm. screen, and had at some previous time, before the laboratory roasting-furnace was torn down, received a partial roasting. The analyses of these ores are given in Table I. In order to determine the applicability of pot-roasting as to each lot of ore, and the effect of varying proportions of lime, six preliminary tests were made in a " size N " Battersea crucible, 9 in. high by 6 in. in diameter at top, with a 5/8 in. hole bored through the bottom. The crucible was set in the upturned elbow of a 2-in. pipe, the joint being luted with clay; and air was obtained from a receiver supplied by a compressor. The

"In Cu-Mo deposits it is usual to find considerable amounts of pyrite (FeS2). When processing this kind of ore by flotation, pyrite is rejected using lime to increase the pH to alkaline conditions (pH ~10.5). In the case of using seawater without pre-processing, i.e., raw seawater, the lime consumption increases dramatically and the recovery of molybdenite drops due to the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide on its surface. In order to avoid these negative effects, alternative ways of depressing pyrite should be considered.The current work introduces the use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, bacteria commonly used in bioleaching, as an alternative to depress pyrite in seawater flotation. The paper presents the results of biodepression in three systems: fresh water, water with added sodium chloride at 35 g/L (which corresponds to the salt concentration in seawater ) and seawater. The results show that it is possible to bio-depress pyrite with A. ferrooxidans in natural seawater pH (7.8-8.2). A similar behaviour is observed when running the experiments in fresh water, and in water with sodium chloride added.INTRODUCTIONWater is a scarce but essential resource for human development. The main reason for this scarcity is that, although 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water, only 3% of the total is fresh water and an important part of this water is frozen, so that only 1% of fresh surface water can be used for human activities. In Chile, most of the mining activity is concentrated in the north of the country, located in the Atacama Desert, considered the world's driest desert. That is why some mining companies have chosen to use seawater in their processes. For example, Esperanza (Antofagasta Minerals), and Sierra Gorda (KGHM International) use raw seawater in their flotation processes."

ABSTRACT: Although individually both continuum and discontinuum numerical analyses provide useful means to analyze rock slope stability problems, complex failures typically involve mechanisms related to both existing discontinuities (i.e. discontinuum) and deformation and brittle fracture of intact rock (i.e. continuum). One such example is the 1991 Randa rockslide in the southwestern Swiss Alps, where failure involved several complex mechanisms, which require the consideration of progressive failure and rock mass strength degradation. This paper presents results from a series of hybrid finite-/discrete-element models directed towards the explicit modelling of brittle fracturing in natural rock slopes, enabling the modelling of progressive failure, from initiation, through to the development of catastrophic failure, transport and deposition. RÉSUMÉ: Si les modélisations numériques de type continu ou discontinu fournissent des outils utiles pour l’analyse de problèmes de stabilité de pentes rocheuses, elles montrent de sérieuses limitations lorsque des mécanismes de rupture complexes impliquent des processus liés autant aux discontinuités préexistantes qu’au développement progressif de nouvelles fractures. Ceci se retrouve typiquement dans l’exemple de l’éboulement de 1991 à Randa dans les Alpes suisses du sud-ouest, où la rupture a impliqué plusieurs mécanismes complexes nécessitant la prise en considération de la fracturation progressive ainsi que de la dégradation de la résistance des masses rocheuses. Cet article présente des résultats provisoires d'une série de modèles hybrides orientés vers la modélisation explicite de la fracturation de pentes naturelles, permettant la modélisation de fractures progressive de leur initiation jusqu’à leur développement, leur rupture catastrophique, leur transport et leur déposition. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Obwohl numerische Kontinuum- und Diskontinuum-Berechnungen einzeln nützliche Ergebnisse zur Stabilitätsanalyse von Felshängen liefern, sind komplexe Felsrutschungen typischerweise mit Mechanismen verbunden, die sowohl durch bestehende Trennflächen (s.a. Diskontinuum-Ansatz) als auch durch die Deformation und das Versagen intakter Felsbereiche (s.a. Kontinuum-Ansatz) bedingt werden. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Sachverhalt ist der Bergsturz von Randa 1991 im südwestlichen Teil der Schweizer Alpen, bei dem die Rutschung mehrere komplexe Mechanismen umfasste, so dass “progressive failure” und Verminderung der Gebirgsfestigkeit in Betracht gezogen werden müssen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt vorläufige Ergebnisse einer Reihe von hybriden Modellrechnungen (Finite-/Diskrete-Elemente). Diese haben zum Ziel, explizit das bruchhafte Versagen natürlicher Felshänge zu modellieren, wobei das progressives Versagen im ganzen modelliert wird, von der Anfangsphase über die Entwicklung zum katastrophalen Versagen und den Transport und die Ablagerung der Rutschmassen.
