A world-class example of sustainable development in practice, the Local Resource Development Initiative (LRDI) grew from agreements between the Ambatovy nickel mine developers and the Government of Madagascar. A program of training and community development, the LRDI aims to maximise local benefits by optimising the integration of local resources during the construction period of the mine. By local resources, we mean the local labour force as well as local goods and services. Begun in 2007, the foundation of the LRDI is to integrate local resources into the mining project and where gaps are identified, design and implement training, mentoring and other programs to fill those gaps. The principal accomplishments are: the establishment of training centres that trained over 4000 people in little over one year, 96 per cent of whom hired to work at the mine; a support program for local micro, small and medium enterprises that has led to the award of 65 contracts for goods and services with training and mentoring of over 100 local businesses; and a number of special projects that have, among other results, strengthened local agricultural development and created employment for young people. The LRDI provides unique insights into key indicators and lessons learned to strengthen the social and economic sustainability of mining projects in developing countries. The paper will discuss these in terms, among others, of: the importance to project success of upstream planning to address socio-economic issues; the role of civil society and other local partners to strengthen and expand sustainability outcomes, and to spur governments to demand that major projects promote economic and social sustainability; and the integration of mine sustainability with sustained regional social and economic development.

Metallurgical simulation and evaluation of the resource efficiency of whole production processes are of key importance for impact assessment, in terms of environment and resources. Exergy is a measure of resource consumption, taking into account energy, raw materials, water, and chemicals; which allows for the evaluation of different technologies to find the most resource efficient and environmentally friendly process. This paper compares the sustainability for production of rare earth magnets from primary and secondary resources through an exergetic evaluation of the production process, in addition to traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). The methodology makes use of simulation tools for tracking material flow and resources used, based on thermodynamic laws, from ore exploitation to magnet production and recycling. It highlights areas with the greatest potential for improvements in terms of resource consumption and environmental impact generation, having a thermodynamic-validated flowsheet for primary and secondary production of NdFeB magnets, present in several low-carbon technologies, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and cooling systems. It demonstrates the minimum exergy destruction for magnet production, through an irreversibility breakdown chart, showing where irreversible material and energy losses occur. Results show that CO2-equivalent emissions for producing NdFeB permanent magnets from primary resources could be twice as high when compared to magnets produced from recycling technologies. The theoretical maximum exergetic efficiency for primary production is 57.61%, whereas for permanent magnets produced from secondary resources, the exergetic efficiency reaches up to 82.89%. Two magnet recycling technologies were evaluated, i.e. in acidic medium and via hydrogen decrepitation, and it was observed that their exergetic efficiency and environmental impact performed better than production from primary resources. "Previously, we upgraded and implemented two gamma activation assay (GAA) systems designed to analyse the gold content in raw ores at Zarafshan laboratory, Uzbekistan, and achieved a detection limit of less than 0.05 g/t under actual industrial conditions. Having started to design a fully modern, industrial GAA system for mining companies, this paper analyses the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of all major system components that can influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. The results of a study to optimize the detector geometry and sample size are presented and the performances of the linear electron accelerator, detector array, and sample transportation system of a modern, industrial GAA system for analysing gold, silver, and rare earth elements are considered. IntroductionGamma activation analysis (GAA) has considerable potential as a future replacement for traditional fire assay analysis in gold mining (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017). The essence of GAA is to irradiate ore samples with high-energy gamma quanta generated by an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) and then to use a gamma spectrometer to detect the induced activity of the excited gold nuclei. The advantages of this method are discussed in detail elsewhere (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017), where it is shown that GAA is uniquely suited to analysing ore samples when mining for gold, other precious metals, and accompanying elements.These advantages were realized in three industrial GAA laboratories that were commissioned in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan in 1977, in Magadan, Russia in 1979, and in Batagay, Russia in 1986 (Bourmistenko, 1986; Nii Tekhnicheskoy Fiziki I Avtomatiki, n.d). In 1989, a fourth industrial GAA laboratory was commissioned at a gold mine in Tommot, Russia. However, the project was subsequently halted due to economic reasons (Moshkov and Tjamisov, 2017). Currently, only the laboratory of the Muruntau mine in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan is in operation. The gamma activation method for gold determination is widely applicable at this mine owing to its high productivity and low cost of analysis. An outstanding aspect is the performance of more than one million analyses per year."

A commercial CFD-code was used to solve isothermal flow fields of gas and liquid in a Peirce-Smith converter. The model was validated with a 1/4 scale water model, and parametric study. Limits of the modeling technique used were recognized, but calculated results indicate that the present model predicts the general flow field with reasonable accuracy. The model was used to examine general flow conditions in an industrial scale PS-converter. Typical scaling factors of physical models were also evaluated with the aid of predicted bubble distribution, patterns of the flow fields and magnitude of flow velocities. The numerical simulations were found to open new viewpoints to the fluid dynamic related phenomena in the PS-process.

This paper considers the standard of ore reserve assessments required by lenders when presented to support requests for project based loans. The way lenders use this information to structure a suitable financial package shows why ore reserves should be measured by industry set standards. This in turn raises questions concerning the assumptions used to derive mineable reserves from geological reserves. Consideration of the variety of related problems highlights the need for assessments to be defined according to acceptable standards. These should also address the suitability of the methodology to the assumed configuration of the orebody; the degree of variance and relaibility of estimates of grade and tonnage presented; and the estimation of probability that ore will in practice fall within the defined limits. In an increasingly international marketplace it is appropriate to compare Australian industry requirements to those of similar overseas industries, in this case the United States. Lenders would like to see that individuals responsible for the preparation of ore reserve estimates are certified on the basis of their skill and expereince by an industry body such as The AusIMM. The paper discusses how each of the parameters indicated above may impact upon a lender's assessment of the viability of a project. A number of practical examples are presented where inaccuracies or inadequacies in ore reserve information have led to reduced project performance.

Historically, underground mine rescue teams have received training only in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fire drills every 90 days, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that may be encountered in real escape situations, such as smoke filled entries. This paper describes technology and realistic training simulations that have been identified for the general workforce and mine emergency responders. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. These technological advancements can improve the state of readiness for rescue personnel and increase the chances of survival for personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.

The presence of goethite in a hematite ore has been shown to strongly affect the time of heating to the firing temperature. The investigation of spalling of single pellets and of packed beds has enabled free water and goethite spalling to be identified as separate phenomena. In addition, it has been shown that even for an 18 inch deep bed of green balls the free water and goethite drying periods can be considered separately. Based on this observation, a method of predicting production rate and hood temperature profile is presented. The method required knowledge of the ore goethite content, ore grind and the green pellet bulk density. Laboratory results were found to be in good agreement with actual plant practice and have led to improved process performance.

Over the years, the importance of surface and interfacial phenomena has been neglected by the copper-nickel industry. As a result, little data on the surface and interfacial tension of the Ni matte and slag system are available in the literature. In view of the scarcity of information in this area, the surface tensions of the Ni-Fe-S system together with the Ni-Fe-S and fayalite type slag system were measured using the sessile drop technique. Drop images were obtained by X-ray radiography. For the Ni-Fe-S system, the results showed that the surface tension of the matte increases with matte grade. The surface tension behavior with changing matte grade showed a slight negative deviation from ideality. This indicated that FeS is slightly surface active in the nickel matte system. Results also indicated that small increase in sulphur content in the matte can decrease the surface tension quite significantly. The measured surface tension of the Ni-Cu-S system showed a linear relationship with the Cu2S content in the matte. The surface tension decreased with Cu2S content. Interfacial tension measurements showed a similar trend. That is, interfacial tension increased with increasing matte grade. The presence of MgO (-1.5%) and A12O3 (-6%) in the slag does not affect the interfacial tension value. Effects of matte surface tension on phenomena such as entrainment of matte in slag and infiltration of matte into refractory pores are discussed. The calculated flotation coefficients indicated that flotation of nickel mattes cannot be avoided by changing the matte grade. Filming of matte on bubbles can occur below a matte grade of about 19% Ni3S2. As for infiltration, refractory bricks containing high Cr2O3 will be easily wetted by matte regardless of matte grade. Therefore, bricks containing high Cr2O3 can easily be infiltrated by liquid matte.

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

Laboratocy flarmnability tests were perfonned on dust samples from Fraser Mine in a 1.2 L Lindenburg horizontal tube furnace to detennine the percentage of sulphur oxidized during ignition. The explosion pot ential of sulphide dusts depends on their degree of spontaneous oxidat ion, which was measured by the quantitative analysis of so2 gas released during ignition. Test results indicated that dusts with low sulphur content could exhibit a higher degree of oxidation than a sample with high sulphur content. txlst characterisation using image analysis techniques suggests that the structure and the texture of dust are important factors influencing the explosibility of sulphide dust at ignition temperatures. Therefore for safe mine operations% sulphur content cannot be considered as a reliable single index that could be used to predict the potential of a sulphide dust explosion. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation of dust plays an important role in the detennination of suitable indices for the prediction and prevention of sulphide ore dust explosions.

The sand and gravel industry in Southern California has made a sizeable contribution to the construction development of the 15 County area in this part of the State. Facing this mineral extraction industry, in the next decade, is a problem of meeting the market demand. The question is, "how can sand, gravel and rock operations be made compatible with goals for sound and attractive community development?" Three basic principal characteristics of the land needed for this-mining industry are: 1. The land must have workable sand, gravel or stone deposits. 2. The land must be properly located for transportation purposes close to the market in order to sell the aggregate at a minimum cost. 3. The land must be zoned so that it will be permissible to mine.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. Over the years, electric utilities have been faced with declining steam-coal quality, rising coal prices, and increasingly rigid and costly environmental standards. As a result, many utilities are beginning to show an interest in coal cleaning to upgrade coal by improving its heating value and reducing its sulfur content. Among the primary questions that must be answered for these electric utilities is whether the cost of coal cleaning can be offset by the potential cost savings in coal transportation and utilization in power generation. In search of at least a preliminary answer to this question, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) engaged Bechtel to perform a case-by-case economic study to examine the cost effects of using cleaned versus raw coal to fuel new electric power plants. The results of two of the seven cases studied which involved western coals - one from Montana and another from Utah - are reported in this paper. Coal cleaning appeared to be a cost effective option for the Utah coal, but only marginally economical for the Montana coal. These cost results are expected to change to favor coal cleaning to a greater extent with the application of the final revised New Source Performance Standards regulating SO2 emissions just issued by the EPA. The study was based on the regulation originally proposed by the EPA under the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments.

Combustibility data are presented for 14 samples representing commonly used mine materials (treated and untreated wood, conveyor belt and brattice cloth). The combustibility data were obtained in the Factory Mutual Small-Scale Combustibility Apparatus (sample area -0.008 m ). The hazards associated with the mine materials were evaluated in terms of: 1) ignition/ surface flame spread using an ignition parameter (IP). A reasonable correlation was found between IP values and U.S. Bureau of Mines ratings for conveyor belts and brattice cloth and large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 2) generation of combustible vapors, using a vapor generation parameter (VP); 3) heat release using a heat generation parameter (HP). A reasonable correlation was found between HP values and the large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 4) generation of "smoke," toxic and corrosive products using a chemical compound generation parameter (CP); and 5) light obscuration by "smoke" using the light obscuration parameter (LP). All the wood treatments, except Fireguard, were found to be effective in reducing the fire hazard. The effectiveness of the treatment appears to be due to enhancement of carbon formation in the solid phase and enhancement of water formation in the vapor phase. Concepts are presented for establishing 1) the relationship between various parameters (IP, VP, HP, CP, and LP) and basic properties of materials, and 2) the usefulness of the parameters as criteria for the combustibility and fire hazard evaluations of the mine materials.

Atlas Copco, a leading supplier of equipment and services to the mining and construction industries, is consistently pursuing its strategy to offer the most productive and economical solutions by continuously offering new innovative products. These are, in most cases, developed and tested in close cooperation with demanding end users before being officially launched on the international market. The demands for higher productivity and improved overall economy have resulted in systems for automation of the drilling cycle and also tools for integrating the drilling equipment to the production control system used by the customer. In terms of improving the blasted material quality, the company has placed emphasis on accuracy in the drilling process and documenting what has been drilled. By applying state of the art technology to the common automation platform, developed for the surface drilling market, major steps in improving overall drilling productivity and blasting performance have been achieved. "Technologies developed to sequester CO2 or use CO2 for enhanced fossil fuel recovery are currently being utilized across the globe. Taxation regimes and CO2 credit trading are becoming drivers for a number of projects. Some mining companies have also identified ancillary opportunity to sequester CO2 in their by-products; recent work in the alumina industry is a prime example. In addition to process plant emissions, mining companies are becoming increasingly aware of their overall carbon footprint, including CO2 generated during the production of utility power. New power plant designs, in various stages of development, include CO2 separation and sequestration techniques. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art for these technologies; including integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants. A concept to use the gasification products as reductant in metallurgical processes is also described. The relevance of technology from power plant designs with post-combustion capture to the processing of off-gas generated in metallurgical facilities is also reviewed.IntroductionGlobalization and international economic growth have led to an increase in energy demand worldwide, and a corresponding increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2005, 81% of global energy supply came from fossil fuels [1]; and while alternative energy technologies are emerging, it will require many decades to curb society’s fossil fuel dependence. Given the global concern of climate change and its scientific relationship with anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), there is at present great interest in the development of techniques to reduce emissions of CO2. While most of these efforts are related to power generation and energy efficiency, the development of technologies for CO2 capture may offer opportunities in reducing emissions from industrial processes."

COMPARED to the situation abroad, the domestic industry continues to lag both as regards the production and consumption of newly mined lead. During 1938 we produced and consumed slightly over 20 per cent of the world output, whereas ten years ago the figure was nearly double this pro- portion. Labor difficulties and absence of demand were chiefly responsible for the general inactivity. In the foreign field, in spite of low metal prices, production and consumption of lead equaled or exceeded all previous records. Practically all the large companies, with the exception of those in Spain, increased operations, though it should be noted that the foreign lead mines have higher-grade ores than domestic mines. In view of the rapid expansion of the foreign industry, it is natural to expect greater progress abroad, particularly in process metallurgy.

The method of moving averages was found useful in assessing the nature of methane emission in coal mines. Emission rates were influenced markedly by the presence of abandoned oil and gas wells in the vicinity of the mine. Such wells appeared to increase the flow rate of methane into the mine by a factor of 2 to 30 in an active mine in the Pittsburgh coal seam.
