Residential and commercial plumbers in the United States were introduced to Viega?s copper press technology in 1999. In short, the technology allows plumbers and installers to join copper pipe securely in four to seven seconds on pipe sizes of 1.2 to 10 cm (0.5 to 4 in.) by pressing the connections with specialized tools and fittings rather than through sodering or welding. The water- and air-tight technology, first introduced in Germany in 1989, includes three different sealing elements, a variety of materials and a selection of configurations. By eliminating the need to thread or solder pipe, connections and repairs can be made quickly and securely. Installations are also much quicker and as secure as traditional methods.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

These gasolines are designated July 1948 production, although some of the samples may have been produced a month earlier or later.

Frontiers related to environmental management present significant challenges especially in the USA. More than ever it is appropriate to optimize total economics by adopting a "systems approach" that integrates mining, mineral processing and environmental management.

LOOKING back over the industrial and commercial progress of the United States during the last half century the outstanding influence has been the growth of the use of the fluid fuels, petroleum and natural gas. At the turn of the century these fuels supplied only 8 per cent of the energy requirements of the nation. Last year nearly 45 per cent of our heat and power supply were derived from these fuels. These figures are merely statistical reflections of the fundamental change in our national economy which has affected, in so many amazing ways, the life of this generation. The factors which have caused this change are still operative. The trend which has thus been established still continues and growth in the use of these fuels is, in all probability, still well below the peak, both for this country and for other parts of the world. Two great wars have not essentially changed this basic trend; if anything they have served to accelerate it. World War II did not alone increase our requirements for liquid fuels; it demonstrated the absolute essentially of petroleum resources to our national security. Petroleum is no longer just an important factor in our national standard of living; it is the most important single element in our national defence-

"Exposure to airborne dust in coal mines has caused respiratory disease in coal miners. The causal agent in these diseases remains unknown, although the minerals found in and around the coal seam have been implicated. Toxicological studies designed to establish the effect of different mineral combinations and concentrations are lacking because the mineral content of coal mine dust has not been defined. This paper reports the initial results of a study done to characterize the mineral content of the coal mine dust found in a mine in the Upper Freepott seam in Northern West Virginia. Coal mine dust samples were collected using 4- stage cassette impactors at nine locations in the mine. The samples were analyzed by an x-ray microdiffraction film technique supplemented by energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. Primary size modes of about 17 to 20 micrometers from the samples collected at the haulageway and the returnside of the continuous miner were found. From the returnside of the roof bolter samples, a primary size mode of 12to15 micrometers was measured. The minerals found in high percentages were illite, kaolinite, quartz, and calcite. The distribution of minerals in inter· and intra- location samples showed wide variations. Trends in these variations are presented. Stobbe, T. J.; Plummer, R. W.; Kim, H.; Jones. The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases has been well recognized; however, the reasons for variation in occurrence of these diseases among miners in different geographic areas,(1) rank of coal seams,(2-3) and jobs (4) remain uncertain. Several papers have reported on the causal agent in the development of these diseases. Davis (5) found that the percentage of the non-coal minerals present in the lungs of deceased miners increased as the level oi pneumoconiosis became more severe. Reisner (6) reported that cell damage caused by coal mine dust increases with the mineral and quartz content of the dust and with the geo· logical age and rank of the coals. Two studies, investigating the in vitro effects of mineral dusts. reported by Seemayer and Manojlovic (7) also obtained positive correlation between cytotoxicity and the mineral content of coal mine dust. Gormly (8) postulated that destruction of macrophages by certain mineral dusts is the first step in the development of pneumoconiosis. In 1980, Adamis and Timar (9) reported that quartz. sandstone, slate. respirable colliery dust. bentonite, illite, and some kaolins had cytotoxic effects on rat peritoneal macrophages""in vitro."" Walton,(10) however, reported that the presence of high clay, illite, and kaolin mineral exposures reversed the hazards associated with increasing quartz exposures. This finding was supported by Le Bouffant and coworkers.(11) They reported that illite present in coal mine dust strongly inhibited the pathogenic effects of quartz while kaolin had a weaker inhibitory effect."

The rapid development of science and technology in Russia has been the result of well laid plans since 1918. At that time the Institute of Silicates was established is Moscow and later the establishment of similar more specialized institutes for the study of cement, glass, refractories, construction ceramics, electrical ceramics, building materials and asbestos provided the necessary research facilities for studies related to all types of ceramic inorganic materials. The' Institute of Ceramics and the Institute of Silicate Chemistry, Academy of Sciences, USSR, were founded in Leningrad. The work now going on in these various research' institutes covers every branch of silicate science and ceramics The impetus behind such establishment of special¬ized laboratories is no doubt due to the 5-year plans and the necessity of improving the scientific knowledge regarding the materials being used and the products being manufactured.

"AbstractThis paper reviews the progress made in the manufacture of hydraulic cement from iron blast-furnace slag by simply grinding the granulated material with other constituents. The influence of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the slag, the conditions of granulation, the manner of drying, and the fineness of grinding, on the hydraulic properties of the cement, is discussed. The effect of additions of lime, portland cement, and anhydrite, alone and in combination, on the physical and cementing qualities of the mortar and concrete made from Sydney blast furnace slag, is shown in tables of data and is reviewed in some de- tail. The work at the Nova Scotia Technical College has shown that a cement equivalent in every respect to portland cement can be made from basic blast furnace slag- by the us2 of certain quantities of portland cement as an activator.IntroductionBlast furnace slag is a potentially valuable material for the manufacture of hydraulic cement. It is a by-product of the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, and is formed by the combination of the silica and alumina .of the iron ore with the limestone flux. The metallurgist terms a slag .acid or •basic according as the percentage of lime is less or greater than the percentage of silica plus alumina. The basic slags have the •more pronounced hydraulic properties."

By 1968 Cyprus Pima was milling 38,000 tpd of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing rod mills and ball mills. A 15,000 tpd expansion was put on stream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous mills, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each individual liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Power and media consumption are shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

Capper Pass & Son Limited Was, until its recent closure, the world's largest producer of tin from secondary materials including solder drosses, non-ferrous smelter flue dusts, tin based metal alloys, residues and slags. Polonium-210, an alpha emitting radionuclide, was present in varying concentrations in some of the numerous feed materials processed by the smelter and refiner. The polonium-210 followed a complex path through the process flowsheet. This paper discusses the behaviour of polonium, both from its arisings in other smelters' process streams and through the entire Capper Pass smelting and refining circuit. The consequential personnel safety and environmental precautions necessarily taken in some areas of the process operation are outlined.

The Bureau of Mines examined the effects of high humidity and water droplets on the GCA Corp. real-time aerosol monitor (RAM--l). which uses a lO4mm cyclone preseparator. Tests were conducted both in a laboratory and in a full-scale model mine entry. The laboratory tests were conducted in a test chamber saturated with moisture and water droplets. Under these extreme conditions. the RAM-I responded by indicating dust concentrations of 1-1/2 to 2 mg/m3? although the air was dust free. Within the first 2 h of each test. water accumulated in the cyclone and affected the cyclone particle separation characteristics. resulting in readings of 3 to 4 mg/m3. In addition. condensation formed inside the RAM-I case and affected the liquid crystal display (LCD). However. the full-scale mine entry tests revealed that the RAM-I can function ac-ceptably in an atmosphere of water vapor and water droplets similar to the most severe conditions found in an underground mine.

Probably the newest thing in mining safety, or safety for mines, is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industries, as represented by both management and labor, and the general public of the Nation, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments and papers in the technical press;l-9 in labor periodicals,10,11 in popular journals and periodicals,l2, 13 and in the daily press; also by discussions of the Safety Committees sponsored by the National Safety Council,9, 14-15 the American Mining Congress,l.l6 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers,2,4 the Mine Inspectors' Institute of Amerthe Coal Mining Institute of America,5 19 the American Standards Association, and others.20.21 Mining safety is a joint problem of management and the individual workman. Safety is not attained and will not be attained solely by laws, decrees, and commands because, if it could be done in this manner, acceptable mining safety would have been achieved long ago by the individual states in our Nation and by the nations abroad. The best safety performance is found at plants where management provides a safe environment for the workers; where supervision is efficient and super- visors, others concerned with promoting safety, and the individual worker know through training, experience, and personal contact the safe and unsafe practices of their field; and where the trained individual worker has become safety-minded by experience, quiet influence, unconscious suggestion, and personal guidance. Despite what may be said to the contrary, progress has been and is being made in mining safety. This is shown in Fig 1 to 4. It is beyond the scope of this paper to give possible reasons for the valleys and peaks in the fatal-injury rates. Some recent factors that appear to be contributing to the improvement in these rates are briefly discussed. Aside from mining equipment, "what's new in mining safety" for some mines has been in effect or was tried by others long ago. A safety pro- gram is a living thing; as such, it must be vitalized and continuously fed with enthusiasm, constructive action, and improvements. Because safety is concerned with human conduct, it is necessary to practice safety at all times; if not, it is soon forgotten, and accidents occur. Mining-safety Records The large employment and production concerned with anthracite contribute much to the mining-safety records of the mineral industry. Approximately 81,000 persons are. employed in this industry having mines concentrated in an area of 480 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the achievement of the anthracite industry in safety during 1948, the other branches of the mineral industry can profit by a study of what has been done to achieve that record. Where one mineral is produced by other large groups having methods of mining that are similar in many respects to the anthracite-mining methods, an achievement in such a large industry is important. Salient factors concerned with safetye in the anthracite industry are: no radical change has occurred in the mining-safety regulations pertaining to anthracite mines. The various fuel investigations that were being carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey were transferred by law on July 1, 1910, to a new federal bureau, the Bureau of Mines, that was authorized to continue the investigations and make public reports of the results. In consequence of this transfer, the following report is published as a bulletin of the new bureau. The United States Geological Survey had been engaged in analyzing and testing coals, lignites, and other mineral fuel substances under authority given by act of Congress. This work, now centered at the experiment station at Pittsburg, Pa., had its beginning in the operations of the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Mo., in 1904. The results obtained at that plant showed that the work of determining the fuel value of the coals and lignites in the United States with a view to increasing efficiency in their utilization would be incomplete if it did not include systematic physical and chemical researches into the processes of combustion. Hence in its later investigations the Survey carried on such re- searches, concentrating attention on those lines of inquiry which promised results of greatest economic importance. This bulletin is a report on an investigation of the volatile matter in several typical coals-its composition and amount at different tem- peratures of volatilization. As the investigation is still in progress and will doubtless include other coals than those already examined, the bulletin may be considered a preliminary report, stating the prob- lems studied, the methods used, and the results thus far obtained.

"In the past decade, the ‘zero-dredge’ philosophy has become the preferred option for the formation of marine seawalls and reclamations, compared to the partially or fully dredged options, as this solution presents several environmental advantages. Recent relevant project experience is presented herein in order to highlight key design principles and construction issues central to the successful construction and performance of a sloping rubble seawall founded on soft soil improved by stone columns. If designed and installed with proper quality control, correct treatment intensity and sensible construction staging, stone columns are a safe and cost effective method for seawall foundations. This paper provides guidelines with regards to the design, construction and quality control for the correct implementation of stone columns as a foundation element for sloping rubble marine seawalls.INTRODUCTIONBenefits of sloping marine seawalls founded on stone columnsTo suit the current environmental requirements in Hong Kong, recent projects are tending to favour zero-dredge solutions, such as the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facility and the forthcoming Three-Runway System. The installation of stone columns allows the underlying deposits, generally consisting of very soft to soft clay and silt (soft soil), to improve in strength to the extent that the seawall can be directly placed on the seabed. This negates the need to dredge the soft soil and, therefore, this ground improvement technique represents an ideal solution for zero-dredge projects.Stone columns can also provide several other beneficial effects, including: accelerated drainage, reduced settlement, increased slope stability and soil reinforcement in the event of an earthquake. Stone columns, in contrast to competing cementitious methods, are a very ductile foundation method. This ductile behaviour is part of the design concept of stone columns in soft soil. Past projects located in Hong Kong and elsewhere, with an improved soft soil layer thickness of over 15m, have shown that stone columns can remain fully functional in terms of both drainage and horizontal reinforcement, even after settlements of over 3m and lateral displacements of up to 1m have occurred."

The major components of sylvinite ores, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), are separated by flotation. Since both these minerals are water-soluble, the process is carried out in a saturated brine, 6~7 mol/L aqueous solution of NaCl and KCl. C16~C22 primary amines, utilized as a collector, are practically insoluble in water. In commercial potash ore flotation operations these amines are melted by heating up to 70~90°C. They are then neutralized with hydrochloric or acetic acids, and such a hot emulsion/dispersion is introduced to the flotation pulp (which is at room temperature). This is immediately accompanied by the appearance of a white precipitate in the system. As our measurements indicate, the Krafft point of dodecylammonium chloride in concentrated electrolyte solutions is much higher than 80°C, and the Krafft point of C16~C22 amines is substantially higher than that. Introduction of a hot amine emulsion into a pulp, at temperature much lower than the Krafft point for the utilized amines, must cause precipitation of the amines. Some of these species are obviously flotation-active. It is interesting to observe that in summertime, when temperatures are high-er, longer chain amines perform better. It demonstrates that the colloidal amine species that precipitate serve as active species in the potash flotation. Therefore, at higher pulp temperatures, when the temperature difference between the pulp temperature and the Krafft temperature of the utilized amine is not sufficiently large, a longer chain amine, the amine with a higher Krafft point, is more efficient. The results reveal that premixing of an alcohol such as MIBC (common frother) with the amine significantly improves flotation performance of the amine. In the presence of such an alcohol the amine disperse system becomes less turbid, and the rheology of the system less non-Newtonian. All this indicates that MIBC, which does not operate as a frother in a potash flotation system, when used as a co-surfactant, enhances the dispersion of the amine colloidal system. The appearing colloidal species perform as an active form of the collector.
