"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

To be successful , human exertion employed for the creation of value requires power and heat ; the ability to produce concentrated power in great quantities has resulted in the relatively recent industrial development that is so profoundly affecting the world . In our commercial history , we have advanced through several stages in the selection of the most suitable fuels , continuously striving to increase the flexibility and range of energy- transmission . The easy distribution of light , power and heat is the leading factor in the decentralization of industry which promises to correct some of the serious evils that have followed in the footsteps of our commercial development . The distribution of fuel in quantity in so convenient a form and with such an attractive reliability- factor as can be had with gas , meets the modern conception of efficient service . Natural gas has been used in this country for more than a century, but recently it has attained a prominence far in excess of anything known in its earlier history. We may consider that we are now getting into our real stride in the utilization of our natural- gas resources . : In a country like the United States , wherein we are accustomed to mammoth achievements , we may be inclined to accept casually the noteworthy technical and economic advances which have resulted in the expansion of natural- gas distribution . About three years ago , the transmission of natural gas a distance of more than 250 miles from its source was first accomplished , and this was really a noteworthy engineering feat . Today , this useful commodity is being transported twice that distance , and lines are being laid which will carry gas more than 900 miles from the points of occurrence . Let us not take such outstanding improvements too much as a matter of course ; the industry should be congratulated on its long steps forward .

Barrick Goldstrike Mines is improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. Identifying equipment failure modes and developing associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle. This results in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time. Mining companies invest in their capital assets to provide the capacity necessary to meet operational needs. Over time, functional failures occur that reduce this productive capacity. Diagnostic technologies now exist that allow the condition of equipment to be monitored. Early response to this information minimizes the effects of functional failures and restores equipment re- liability. Reliability is a performance indicator of overall equipment condition. It is most often expressed in terms of mean time between failures. When the established objectives of a capital asset management program include the maximization of this failure interval, trailing indicators, such as availability and operating cost improve. The probability of equipment failure is influenced by engineering design and operating conditions. The performance level resulting from this operating environment is expressed as "inherent reliability." Without maintenance intervention, equipment will ultimately fail to perform its intended function and become less reliable. Therefore, maintenance must be managed as the supplier of reliable operational capacity. Maintenance can only supply equipment performance that approaches the level of inherent reliability. Actually achieving inherent reliability requires that all maintenance decisions are made at the economically optimal time. Enhancing performance levels beyond inherent reliability can only be achieved by altering operating conditions or practices or through physical equipment modifications. An evolution in maintenance management philosophy has been under way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. As equipment has become more sophisticated, so have maintenance practices. At the beginning of the industrial age, equipment tended to be over designed and slow moving. The first maintenance philosophy was one of reactive maintenance. Maintenance intervals were dictated by the operational status of the equipment. As a result, production interruptions were common and capacity needs were met through an investment in redundant capital assets.

ALTHOUGH the application of light metals in war materiel increased during the year, based on the number of uses, the trend in aluminum and magnesium production in 1944 was characterized by a sharp decline in the production of both metals accompanied by a further accumulation of large Government reserve stocks. Several primary reduction plants were curtailed to prevent building excessive inventories. By the end of the year, however, a lively revival of war production took place when resistance stiffened on the western front in Europe. Production of primary aluminum ingot was reduced from over 90,000 tons per month at the start of the year to 45.000 tons per month by the end of the year.

Two major problems in the operation of air preheaters for boilers are corrosion and the accumulation of deposits on the heating surfaces. Corrosion or loss of metal necessitates replacement of parts; the accumulation of deposits decreases the size of the gas and air passages, resulting in increased pressure drop for the same gas flow, and also affects the heat transfer. These items, either singly or together, limit the capacity and efficiency at which the equipment can be operated and affect its availability, even causing undesirable shutdowns under extreme conditions The field and laboratory work on regenerative air preheaters described in this report covers research on the relative corrosion resistance of different materials, such as various metals, special metal coverings, and fired clays, and studies on deposits, their nature, analyses, and corrosive effects. This is the first report on cooperative work of The Air Preheater Corp., of New York City, and the Federal Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume-percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

In certain areas of the New Cornelia pit, considerable secondary blasting is necessary to reduce oversized boulders, formed from primary blasting, to pieces which will pass the 41/2-cu yd dippers on the shovels. Some of the boulders are 'dobied, but when time permits they are blockholed and blasted. In most instances one hole drilled to a depth of 2 to 3 ft and blasted with 1/3 to 1/2 of a stick of powder will break a boulder satisfactorily. Blockholing is normally done by using a jackhammer of the 55-lb class, 1-in. round drill steel, and detachable steel bits, 2-in. gauge when new. A bit change is usually made after the completion of each hole. The use of light drilling equipment in blockholing is desirable, both from the standpoint of safety and ease of doing the work, and when it was seen there was a possibility of using a lighter jackhammer through the use of tungsten-carbide bits and at the same time get at least the same drilling efficiency as with the standard equipment, it was decided to test tungsten-carbide bits. The claims for long life of the bits and footage drilled before resharpening gave hopes of eliminating much of the delay time in changing bits which is unavoidable with the use of steel bits. and thus gain in actual drilling time.

Statistical methods applied at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center to data from metallic ore bodies were used to evaluate lignite reserves from core data and to predict the extent of lignite horizons in some Texas lignite beds. Six lignite seam units were studied using data from 361 drill holes. The data indicate a total of 214.2 million tons of lignite in the area examined, and probable reserves of 113 million tons in an area 2,000 feet beyond the limits established by the drill holes. It was demonstrated that lignite reserves present in lenticular beds could be reliably determined by statistical techniques, and that core drilling could be optimized to maximum information with minimum drill holes. The technique described is applicable to other coal beds.

"Large-scale mine reclamation has taken place recently in response to the implementation of mining regulations in China. Effective monitoring of the progress of reclaimed land is a critical procedure to assess the quality of reclamation program and to ensure that mining enterprises fulfill their reclamation responsibilities. The present paper reports a preliminary study that examines the situation of mine land reclamation monitoring. Based on the monitoring, some general requirements for mined land reclamation have been proposed, including: the monitoring should be systematic and comprehensive the monitoring should be adapted to specific local conditions the monitoring should be reasonably optimised via scientific methods and technology the monitoring should stick to a variety of national technical criteria.The aim of land reclamation monitoring is to evaluate changes of critical indicators closely reflecting the development trend of the reclaimed mined land, to develop or improve the criteria and technical parameters specific to the site, and to prevent secondary environmental degradation. Based on these requirements and aim, the monitoring should cover the progress of reclamation, establishment of vegetation and plant community development; and recovery of land and water quality in the reclamation area. "The phosphorus content of an iron ore is a determining factor as regards the value of the ore and also its metallurgical treatment. If some method of treatment, such as concentration, leaching, etc., could be used and the phosphorus con- tent of the ore reduced, it would be an important advancement in the iron mining industry towards the utilization of high phosphorus ores. Large bodies of material toe high in phosphorus to be marketable under present conditions would be made available, and a great deal of ore from the Cuyuna Range and other places, which is relatively high in phosphorus but otherwise suitable for making spiegel, could be reduced in phosphorus content sufficiently to permit its use in furnaces producing speigel.The form in which phosphorus occurs in iron ore is a much disputed question and it probably varies with the type and location of the ore. The statement has been made that ore piles on long exposure to the atmosphere often decrease in their phosphorus content. (Emmons, S.F. - Ore deposits, 1913, p. 652; Leith, C.K., Mesabi iron bearing district, U.S.G.S. Monograph 43, 1903, p. 275) There is described below experiments on the leaching of iron ores high in phosphorus, to determine whether it was economically possible to reduce the phosphorus content appreciably by leaching. As the research had a practical as well as a theoretical application, only low concentration of acids and alkalies were used.A number of variables were tried, among these being: (1) The solvent used, (2) strength of the solvent, (3) volume of solution used, (4) time ore was agitated (5) type of ore, and (6) screen size of the ore. The amount of ore taken was kept constant."

Conventional rock-bolt anchors often fail when installed in weak formations. The purpose of this work was to develop an anchor that would utilize an explosive charge to secure anchorage in any type of rock. Laboratory work to develop a rock-bolt anchored by explosive forming was initiated using rock-bolt models which had a drilled explosive chamber and were composed of various metals. This was followed by the use of several types of seamless tubing which were expanded with a water-coupled explosive capsule. By attaching a length of solid bolt to the anchor tube, a prototype explosive-anchored rock bolt was made. More than 150 laboratory models were expanded during this phase of development, During two field tests in underground mines (A and B) and one in an open- cut mine (C), 87 explosive-anchored bolts, 9 slot-and-wedge bolts, 2 bolts anchored with expanding grout, and 28 expansion-shell bolts consisting of three types of shells were installed and subjected to pull tests. The field tests were run to determine the effects of variables such as the amount and placement of the explosive charge, design changes in the bolt, and the effect on anchorage of different pull-test techniques. The field tests revealed the following: Mine A. The explosive-anchored rock bolt was feasible, but changes were necessary in bolt materials and in some details of bolt design. Mine B. The design and materials of the bolt gave excellent results in hard fractured rock, but no information was obtained concerning variations in the dimensions of the anchor unit or in the explosive charge. Nine C. Varying the explosive charge to produce a beaded surface on the bolt tube and tightening of the anchored bolt before pull-testing were found to increase significantly the anchorage obtained in soft ground.

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. This study proposes a new approach to reduce the environmental impact during surface mining by improving environmental factors through the incorporation of carbon footprint into strategic mine planning. Two key variables were analysed by contrasting and comparing the baseline and optimised models generated. These variables include net present value, which helps determine the financial feasibility of the mining models and their carbon emissions. The variables were analysed by using linear regression, Spearman’s correlation, a P-value hypothesis, and an exponential decay test. Results show that at Mine A the projected net present value was 62% higher than when running a baseline model. Furthermore, the net present value from the baseline model portrayed a high rate of decay at 0.667 versus 0.118 from the optimised model. This indicates the baseline model’s sensitivity to long-term project timelines and fluctuating markets. The optimised method presents an opportunity to manage emissions during the high operational costs phases. It is represented by a 31% improvement in carbon emissions during the periods of high operational costs, whilst maintaining a positive net present value when compared with the baseline model. It was shown that the optimised model presents a better chance of achieving financial feasibility and balancing environmental impact, thereby ensuring that Mine A can align with the environmental aspect of economic, social, and governance principles through lowering the carbon footprint resulting from its hauling operations.

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated weathering test in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests the samples were crushed, ground, and stored for various time periods in argon and air. The results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The differences were interpreted based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings which changed with time. The significance of these results in pyrite/reagent interactions in flotation and in evaluating the acid mine drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides: chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 1000 to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of recovery is no longer limited by the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution, but by the degree of exposure and other factors. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, size of sulfide particles, and fraction of sulfide exposed to solution.

Introduction The Britannia mine is at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound, approximately thirty miles from Vancouver. The first claims were staked in 1898, and a local company was formed at that time to develop them. In 1904, Mr. Grant B. Schley became actively interested in the property and in the following year the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was incorporated to operate it. This Company was taken over a few years later by the Howe Sound Company, Limited. The mine comprises five more or less separate ore-bodies, which have produced approximately 20,000,000 tons of ore to date. The East Bluff ore-body, with which the present paper deals, is well suited to large-scale mining by means of carefully placed powder blasts. It covers approximately an acre and lies in the slate footwall, in a bay produced by a fault. The hanging-wall side, on the west, forms the face of the Bluff glory-hole, which extends to the 1,200 level. A portion of this ore was available for breaking into this old glory-hole, below which four bulldoze chambers could quickly be built. Mining of this block is complicated by a very soft footwall, which 'runs' badly when broken. In stoping, care is taken to guard against the hazard of dilution by deliberately leaving a small portion of ore on the footwall. Some of this will undoubtedly be lost, but it is hoped to recover a fair amount of it after the major drawing is completed. The deposit occurs in a greenstone which has been highly silicified following brecciation. The chief minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite. Concentrates of copper, zinc, and pyrite are made at the mill. The average grade of ore runs 0.7 per cent copper, 1.5 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold per ton. The rock, which is practically a chert, is extremely hard, but shatters well. Both in stoping and drifting, holes must be closely spaced and powder used generously. Development When development work started in the East Bluff, there were no raises and only one drift on each level in this section of the mine. After blocking out the ore by thorough diamond drilling, a production of two thousand tons per day was set as a goal. To obtain this tonnage from so small an area required a great deal of carefully planned and well timed development work.

The selection of atmosphere composition is critical for controlling surface quality of reactive aluminum alloys during solution treatments. An improper selection of annealing atmosphere can result in surface blistering in AI-Mg and sub-surface depletion of lithium in AI-U ingots. To determine optimum atmosphere compositions for homogenizing A1-Mg and Al-Li alloys, Ii number of exploratory experiments were carried out in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide based atmospheres including reactive impurities or additive such as moisture and sulfur hexafluoride. This paper describes the influence of these atmospheres on high-temperature oxidation and sub-surface defects. The results are discussed in terms of the change in Pilling-Bedworth ratio.
