The Bond and the Hardgrove methods are widely used for the determination of the material?s grindability. Generally, the determination of the Bond work index of inhomogeneous materials can be carried out with high deviation using the conventional apparatuses and methods, because of the highly different grindability of components. This is more significant when the composite cement?s grindability is measured, which highly affects the design and operation of cement grinding mills. A possible solution can be the combined application of the Bond-method with the determination of the component?s weight ratio in the product and perform the Bond measurement until the steady state conditions of grindability coefficient (G) and chemical composition of the components are reached. To prove the applicability of the above mentioned idea systematic Bond and Hardgrove grindability tests were carried out of two phase composite materials. The experimental results showed that the application of the combined procedure is proven in order to have a more accurate and reliable calculation of the Bond work index of composite materials, especially when the components have significant difference in the grindability and concentration. The measurements also showed the possibilities and limits of the grindability test methods.

Safe work Australia (SWA) has a number of proposed amendments to existing Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) values that may dramatically change how mining workplaces using personal gas monitoring instruments will operate. In consultation with leading gas monitor manufacturers and distributors, an assessment of common Australian alarm settings values and analysis of potential frequency of increased alarm likelihoods has been conducted. This assessment explores the relationships between current monitoring practices, using instruments as health and not just safety tools and identify what will be needed to minimise worker ‘alarm fatigue’ and for common tasks to continue safely. This paper provides the necessary information to aid industry and hygienists to be ‘future ready’ given the likely impact that order of magnitude reductions in time weighted average (TWA) values for NO2, SO2, H2S and other common gases will have on current working practices. Reductions to gas alarm values will provide significant challenges to existing work methods and will require, practical application of the pending future values. Improvements and awareness of instrument capabilities by safety and hygiene professionals will better utilise gas monitors real-time data monitoring capacity and no longer be just ‘safe or not-safe’ instruments. The presentation seeks to promote the practical steps required in setting alarms based on risk consequence and likelihood, increase general awareness of the tools and data available in modern instruments and will enable industry professionals to better manage the challenges of any potential future changes.

The design, operation, and performance of an integrated pilot plant for recovering zinc and copper from a complex sulfide ore are described. Metallurgical processing comprised selective sulfate roasting in a fluid bed, leaching in a weak sulfuring acid solution, recovering copper by cementation with scrap iron, air oxidation to remove soluble iron, more-or-less conventional purification for removal of impurities deleterious to zinc electrolysis, recovering zinc by electrolyzing solutions, and recycling spent electrolyte to the sulfating roaster. The effects of several feed preparation and roasting variables on the sulfation response of zinc, copper, and iron are set forth, together with the electrolyzing characteristics of the zinc solutions.

The present study aimed to investigate the bioleaching efficiency of moderate thermophilic microorganism in a growth medium without Fe supplement on three different size fractions of spent catalyst obtained from petroleum refinery. All the experiments were conducted on shake flasks at a temperature of 65 °C and a pulp density of 10% (w/v) on three size fractions viz. 45-106 µm, 106-212 µm and >212 µm and a working volume of 100 ml comprising of 10 ml of microbial inoculums and 90 ml of Modified Kelly medium. The parameters like pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count and the amount of acid addition was measured and quantified on regular basis to follow the progress of the bioleaching. The pH varied much in the lag and logarithmic phase of the experiments but stabilized toward the stationary phase. The total acid additions in each batch experiment were determined the amount of Conc. H2SO4 requirement, which ranged between 683-757 kg/ton of spent catalyst. The redox potential values ranged between 625-650 mV, Ag/AgCl, but were very low ranging between 350-450 mV during initial period. The planktonic viable cell count ranged between 108-109 cells/ml active in the bioleaching system, without any toxic influence of the spent catalyst, but initially due to fall in redox potential and new environment for the microbes, their population was low. The leaching yield of Ni was found to be promising with very high leaching yield of 92-96% followed by Al as 61-62%, which means both Ni and Al leaching were favored by the moderate thermophilic bioleaching compared to the mesophilic bioleaching. There was very little difference in the leaching yield, when compared with different size fractions and hence grinding can be avoided prior to leaching. This process seems to be economical as no Fe source is supplemented together with no requirement of grinding and over all a biological process resulting for an eco-friendly process for future optimization of the metal recovery from petroleum refinery spent catalysts. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating the electrochemistry of mineral flotation. A significant need in this area is greater reliability of sensors. The USBM is testing electrolytic methods to clean and condition redox-sensing electrodes to improve the reliability and extend the service life of these instruments in the harsh physical and chemical environment of mineral processing slurries. A novel method for removing scale from fouled electrodes has been developed that includes anodic polarization to 1.2 V versus the Ag/AgCl reference potential, followed by brief potentiodynamic conditioning. Laboratory results show that this technique removes calcarious deposits from gold sensing electrodes and returns the electrode to useful service within approximately 10 min. Mechanical abrasion to remove the scale is thereby avoided.

An accurate measure of the earth's magnetic field can be made in a few seconds with the portable proton precession magnetometer. Such an instrument increases the applicability of the long successful method of magnetic prospecting for minerals. As an example of the usefulness of the proton magnetometer, a survey over volcanic rocks near Apsley (Tas.) was made.INTRODUCTIONA completely portable magnetometer whose operation is based on the free precession of polarized protons in the earth's magnetic field, is now available on the market at a price competitive with magnetometers based on the classical physical principles. The ease, accuracy, rapidity, and reliability with which measurements of the earth's total magnetic field can be made with the proton precession magnetometer, led to the try-out of the instrument in an actual field problem so as to evaluate fully the capabilities of the instrument. Such evaluation is important, because the history of magnetic prospecting has shown that whenever significantly improved instrumentation has been introduced, prospecting costs have been substantially cut and many areas in which the prospecting costs were formerly considered excessive in relation to probable returns, have become economic mineral prospects. BHP Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations use a suite of slope monitoring systems which are deployed to operational areas based on the ground control risk. Slope Radars are one system used within WAIO, having recently deployed and integrated a network of 22 radar systems across the operations. The integration required the development of supporting network architecture, infrastructure, virtualised hosting, security protocols and a technology support model. This has enabled data transfer between the physical radar systems located in open pits, to on-site offices, a vendor supported remote control room in Indonesia and the WAIO Integrated Remote Operations Centre for data analysis and monitoring of system and displacement alarms 24/7. The typical technical skillset of a Geotechnical Engineer does not include the knowledge and capability to understand and develop the supporting IT infrastructure required for establishing an integrated radar monitoring network. This paper will provide a discussion of the technology considerations for integrating radar systems and highlight the importance of the developed partnerships between internal geotechnical and technology teams and the external vendor team to ensure a reliable, robust and scalable slope monitoring solution.

General expressions for evaluating various thermodynamic properties applicable to the van der Waals equation of state have been derived. These formulas were subsequently used to evaluate various thermodynamic functions in the two-phase region. The results indicate that, for a van der Waals fluid, there is a finite discontinuity in the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve, in the second derivative of the chemical potential or Gibbs free energy at the critical point, and in the heat capacity at constant volume measured at the critical density. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated.

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

"Steel-making processes generate carbon dioxide air emissions and a slag co-product. The aim of this project was to develop a functional sequestration system using steelmaking slag to permanently capture carbon dioxide emitted in steelmaking offgas. A possible parallel benefit of this process would be rapid chemical stabilization of the slag minerals with reducing swelling or leaching.This paper summarizes the original results of the project, including mineralogical and structural features of carbon sequestration with steel making slag, mathematical modeling of reaction phenomena using a modified shrinking core model, METSIM modeling of several possible industrial applications, a thermo-gravimetrical study of the reaction between slags and different gases, and design and testing for a lab scale apparatus consisted of two reactors.1. IntroductionThe U.S. produces 9-14 Mt of steelmaking slag annually, which represents approximately 10-15 wt. % of crude steel output.1,2 Primary uses for steelmaking slag include high quality mineral aggregate, Portland cement, unconfined fill, soil conditioning, and pH neutralization of abandoned mine drainage.3,4 The key factor prescribing slag use is the alkaline-earth metal (e.g. Ca and Mg) oxides content, which contribute to overall basicity and cementitious strength. However, as-produced steelmaking slag is chemically unstable. Calcium and magnesium oxides readily form hydroxides and carbonates through reaction with atmospheric gases. Both hydroxide and carbonate formation produce substantial mechanical swelling leading to heave failure in confined construction applications, thus many states dictate stockpile aging for 3-6 months prior to commercial use.5,6 Sequestration of carbon dioxide is a natural corollary to forced carbonation. The conversion of CaO/MgO to carbonates serves both to stabilize the slag, and permanently capture and store the CO2."

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.

"Chromite concentrate after beneficiation can not be directly used in the electric furnace. Therefore sintering is one of the effective way to agglomeration, by which the chromite concentrate can be utilized and the power cost of ferrochrome smelting can be reduced. The properties of raw materials and the sintering process of chromite concentrate were studied in this work. The results showed that chromite concentrate used can hardly granulated alone, while chlorite addition can improve the effect of granulation. Moisture plays an important role in sintering process. The granulation effect is optimal when the amount of water addition is 12%. Strength and abrasion index are the evaluation indexes of sinter quality. It was found that the strength of sinter increased with coke dosage increasing to 12%, and then decreased when it continuously increased. Opposite regularities were found for the abrasion index of the sinter.1 IntroductionChromium is a very important metal element which is mostly used in the production of stainless steel. In the earth, it is always formed compound with iron as ferrochromium spinel (FeO.Cr203), and its mineralogical name is chromite.[1] Currently, the global production of chrome ore is about 20 million tonnage every year , in which fine ore (less than 8 mm) accounted for about 80% [2] Although the price of the fine ore is cheaper than the lump one, too much fines will lead to the poor permeability and causes increased electricity consumption while producing ferrochrome. Therefore, the agglomeration process of chrome ore is one of the effective measures to increase the usage ratio of fine ore."

"A two-pan study was conducted to understand the factors affecting respirable dust generation potential or dustiness of coal seams. In the first part, the data from three prior comprehensive laboratory studies was analyzed to establish quantitative relationships between respirable dust generation potential and coal characteristics. This analysis indicates that respirable dust generation rate is positively correlated with Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI), fuel ratio (fixed carbon/volatile matter), Vitrinite Reflectance (VR), and Level of Organic Metamorphism (LOM). In the second part, specially-designed single breakage experiments were conducted to determine the primary dust generation potential of 17 coal samples obtained from four continuous miner sections, three longwall sections, and the Penn State Coal Data Bank. The single breakage study indicates that primary dust generation rate is positively correlated with fixed carbon content, fuel ratio (fixed carbon/volatile matter), VR, and LOM. Since VR and LOM are strongly influenced by the process of coalification, differences in respirable dust generation rates in different coal seams may be explained by the thermal metamorphism of sedimentary organic matter during subsurface burial.Mineral particles in the range of one to five microns, if inhaled in sufficient amounts, lead to a number of lung diseases generally referred to as pneumoconiosis. A priori knowledge of the mechanisms and rates of fine particle generation during mining can aid in the development of more effective technology for controlling primary dust generation. Unfortunately, the data and knowledge currently available are not adequate for this purpose. In fact, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences on the measurement and control of dust concluded that the knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms by which coal mine dust is generated and a part of it is entrained in the mine atmosphere as respirable dust is not sufficient to clarify, let alone control, the processes involved (Anon., 1980). Under a research contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Stecklein et al. (1982) have identified a number of fundamental research issues for understanding the coal fragmentation and entrainment processes.Reduction of dust generation is the best means of control since fine particles are difficult to control once they become airborne. Therefore, considerable research efforts have been directed to understand the factors influencing dust generation and entrainment, including machine design, water sprays, and ventilation. Laboratory studies have been conducted on the mechanical action of bits and machine power requirements (Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Roepke, 1984). Since the physical characteristics of coal play an important role in the process of breakage, a number of laboratory studies have been conducted to study the relationship between coal characteristics and respirable dust generation (Baafi, 1977; Moore, 1986; Polat, 1990; Thakur, 1971). Several studies have been conducted on the relationships between coal characteristics and airborne dust concentrations (Hamilton and Knight, 1958; Khair and Xu, 1991; Organiscak and Page, 1993; Page et al., 1993). A limited number of studies have also been conducted on the relationships between coal characteristics and airborne dust concentrations in mines (Organiscak et al., 1990). Yet, no reliable method has been developed to rank coal seams according to their respirable dust generation potential. The conclusions derived from previous studies can be summarized as follows:"

The operation of gaseous mines is a problem, due to the fact that we have not only the ordinary mine accidents to guard against, but have also the ever present menace of a mine disaster involving a large number of human lives, and the destruction of valuable property. In looking over the reports of mine disasters throughout the country in the past several years, we find that methane gas, coming in contact with an ignition agency of some kind, has been the source of at least 75 per cent of our mine explosions. Coal dust, of course, plays its part in propagating the explosive action throughout the mine workings and rendering it more violent and destructive; nevertheless, the initial ignition of a body of explosive gas-sometimes of very small volume-has been the primer for the large majority of our mine disasters. We find also, that the places of initial ignition are most frequently found at the working faces, or in close proximity thereto. This is mainly due to the following reasons: First-The working faces are, as a rule, the places where methane gas is most freely generated. Second: They are places that are most poorly ventilated. Third-They are the places where ignition agencies are most frequently found. The sources of ignition, as a rule, consist of naked lights, the shooting -of shots, defective flame safety lamps, and electrical arcs. The problem, then, in the operation of gaseous mines, is primarily to so ventilate the working faces that an explosive mixture is not likely to occur, and to endeavor to keep away from the working faces all sources of ignition. To do both of these things may seem impossible. Nevertheless, by working along both of these directions, a great many disasters can be avoided. The efficient ventilation of the working faces is paramount. By efficient ventilation, we mean the continuous passing of large volumes of air at the working faces. This can only be accomplished by adequate ventilating equipment, capable of being driven by at least two independent and distinct sources of power, together with large, clean, straight air courses which are free of short turns, constructed areas, and leaky doors and stoppings. In other words, furnish a suitable course for its travel through the mine. Many of us sharpen our pencils and rack our brains to properly estimate the proper size pump and pipe equipment that may be needed to handle a certain amount of water. We estimate the size of copper conductors to a nicety. We immediately rush to repair leaks in our water, compressed air or electric lines. But how many of us give serious thought to the travel of the air through our mines, the health and safety-giving fluid on which so much depends! In driving air courses, a certain economical cross-sectional area should be adopted and maintained as standard. When turns are necessary, they should be made with long radius curves, and the cross-sectional area should be increased on the curves. All entry stoppings should preferably be built of monolithic concrete, with suitable hitches into floor and ribs, and after the concrete has set, they should be examined and leaks due to shrinkage and settling should be eliminated. Overcasts and their approaches should have cross-sectional areas larger than the entries leading to them, to allow for the sudden change of direction, bearing in mind that air wants to travel in straight lines. "A study of processing pyrite cinder and metallurgical slag using “one step” technology in strand grate - rotary kiln is presented, which aims to efficiently recover the valuable metals of iron, lead, zinc and copper. The effect of chloridizing roasting parameters including roasting time and temperature on the removal rates of nonferrous metals was investigated. It is shown that copper and zinc are difficult to remove and lead is removed more easily. The preheated pellets were reduced in a rotary kiln, where zinc and lead can be removed easily and high iron grade and good metallurgical performance prereduced pellets can be obtained. Furthermore, the chlorination and the reduction mechanisms of copper, lead and zinc are discussed. It is revealed that the phases of copper, lead and zinc in slag are complex and ferrite and silicate of metals are difficult to remove.IntroductionAs two kinds of significant secondary resources, metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder contain not only abundant iron but also considerable copper, lead, zinc and so on. Several tens of millions of tons of metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are discharged in nonferrous metal and chemical industries annually in China [1, 2]. In addition, the accumulated waste slag in storage is more than one hundred million tons, which not only occupies much land but also pollutes the environment [3]. However, because the metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are treated by high temperature processing, the properties are distinctly different from the properties of natural ores, and iron is in close association with copper, lead and zinc. So, metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are difficult to efficiently utilize and only a small amount is used as additives in cement, paving, brickmaking and auxiliary additives [4-7]."

Production of crude petroleum in the Middle East (southwestern Asia) and in South America has increased greatly during recent years and has become a significant factor in the world's production of crude oil. Crude oil from fields in the Middle East increased from 256,164,000 barrels in 1946 to 305,833,000 barrels in 1947 and 417,201,000 barrels in 1948. Production from South American fields increased from 446,417,000 barrels in 1946 to 518,652,000 barrels in 1947 and 574,837,000 barrels in 1948. Crude-oil production from Canadian fields increased from 7,726,876 barrels in 1947 to 12,370,875 barrels in 1948, most of the increase being attributable to two fields, Leduc and Redwater, both represented by analyses in this report. Present indications are that production of crude petroleum from all these regions will continue to increase.
