The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of temperature upon the reduction of chromite by carbon and the relative reducibility of chromites as a function of their composition. Ferric oxide was also studied to provide comparative data. Pellets weighing approximately 1 gram and containing 70 percent ferric oxide, chromic oxide, or chromite and 30 percent graphite were subjected to closely controlled temperatures under a flow of argon for 15 minutes. The amount of CO and CO2 evolved was measured, and the reduced sample was analyzed by X-ray diffraction techniques. The reduction of Fe2O3 was studied over a temperature range of 600° to 1,400° C, while the reduction of Cr2O5 and chromite was conducted from 9000 to 1,621° C. The temperature above which appreciable reduction of Cr203 by graphite took place was 1,125° C. The temperature at which significant reduction started for three of the four chromite samples was approximately the same, indicating that there was concurrent reduction of iron and chromium oxides in the chromite mineral rather than selective reduction of iron oxides followed by reduction of chromic oxide. Rhodesian chromite appeared to dissociate at a lower temperature with concurrent reduction of iron. Based on the temperature at Which chromite was 50 percent reduced in 15 minutes, Transvaal chromite reduced most easily, followed by Mouat, then by Kampersian, and finally by Rhodesian DFC material. Statistical analysis of test results indicated that the ferric iron content of chromites affects their reduction behavior more than any other constituent.

"INTRODUCTION The Park City district, situated 30 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, Is a well-known producer of lead, zinc, and precious metals. Nearly continuous production has been maintained from the dis¬trict since its early discovery about 1870. For approximately 50 years, gravity milling methods were employed to beneficiate Park City ore, and during that time tailings from the mills were sluiced down Silver Creek and deposited on lands below the camp for 7 miles.Owing to the large tonnage of tailings deposited along Silver Creek, considerable work was done in the past in the attempt to develop a low-cost concentration method for re-treating this material, but no-method was found that was economically feasible. The Bureau of Mines was asked to conduct beneficiation tests on Park City tailings in November 1944, and metallurgical studies were initiated at that time. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on samples from the Grasselli deposit."

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

In the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to implement its Tier 2 air quality standards governing high-horsepower, off-road diesel engines. The regulations take effect in January2006. In Europe, similar standards, called Stages, are due to take effect about the same time. And other markets, such as Japan and Australia, have their own standards on tap. Tier 2 standards will further reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons off-highway diesel engines are allowed to emit. And even more restrictive Tier 4 standards are due in 2011. The upshot is that operators of high-horsepower engines, particularly in mining, will begin using in their new off-road haul trucks, excavators, shovels and other mining machines diesel engines that are designed to meet these more stringent standards.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.

The Bureau of Mines examined sources, consumption, and movement of iron and steel scrap in the southeastern States--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Officials of the scrap-processing and scrap-consuming industries were interviewed, data was obtained from the published literature, and a canvass was made by the Bureau of scrap consumers. The Southeast generated excess scrap which was shipped to domestic and foreign consumers in about equal proportion. Total 1963 demand in the Southeast was 3,336,000 net tons, of which purchased scrap was 75 percent, foreign exports 13 percent, and domestic exports 12 percent. Alabama, with 47 percent of the purchased scrap consumption in 1963, was the most important scrap-consuming State, and Kentucky, with 34 percent, was the second most important one. Southeast demand was 4.8 per-cent of the total U.S. demand. Projected 1980 consumption is 8,340,000 tons. Scrap prices showed a slight downward trend for the period 1953-63, although gross consumption increased slightly. A significant trend in processing scrap in the Southeast is the preparation of smaller bundles or "briquettes" weighing from 75 to 150 pounds, which are easier for consumers to handle and inspect. Another significant development is the "shredding" of automobile scrap which produces a dense, clean scrap especially desirable for use in electric furnaces.

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

"Potassium (K) is one of the essential elements for the growth of plants and thereby for humans. In fertilizers, potash demand has been steadily increasing at ~3.5% annually. Water soluble potash deposits are rare and highly localized. India is neither present on the world potash production map nor it has adequate potash rich rocks. The K-bearing minerals are recovered either by using conventional underground mining methods or though solution mining methods. India possesses a vast resource of silicate rocks such as glauconitic sandstone and Feldspar. These rocks are basically a group of alumino silicate of potassium, sodium and calcium (K2O%: 5-12, Na2O%: 3-10%, SiO2%: 52-65, Al2O3%: 15-20, Fe2O3%:, 5-7 and MgO%: 2-3.5).The K extraction from silicate rocks has received little attention probably due to the slow release, the locked structure of alumina-silicate minerals, and the unavailability of appropriate economic processes & their know-how. In fact due to this India imports all of its potash demand (about 3.5 million tons per annum) from different countries.In the present work, an attempt has been made to identify the structural and chemical alteration of desired K mineral phase in silicate rock (~K2O%: 10.5, Na2O%: 2%, SiO2%: 55, Al2O3%: 19, Fe2O3%, 5-6, MgO%: 2.5) under different conditions such as acid leaching, thermal treatment and chemical processing. Different treatments are aimed to increase K availability which is related to the modifications in mineralogical composition. The modifications in the feed sample and treated samples are studied through SEM-EDAX, XRD, EPMA and optical microscope. With the combination of treatments, it is possible to extract more than 90% K and the formation of sylvite phase (water soluble) confirms the dissolution of potash values."

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

Today, the coal mining industry is more knowledgeable on the potential negative economic consequences associated with improper management of hazardous substances and various types of solid waste. The practices evaluated during environ-mental audits are discussed and example situations are shared from previous audits of coal mines and analogous situations. The importance of assessing and understanding purchasing, warehousing, safety, maintenance, electrical, operations, and environmental management practices and procedures is highlighted as a key to a successful and practical program. A waste minimization approach is presented including strategies for screening product purchases, product substitutions, and testing and record keeping.

The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. INTRODUCTION It is my intention in this paper to deal with gold, uranium, diamonds, platinum, manganese, chrome, vanadium and heavy mineral sands. These are the most important strategic minerals produced by the Republic of South Africa which are not covered in other sessions of this program. In each case I have high- lighted the statistics and peculiar advantages which combine to make South Africa a vital source of these minerals. Before proceeding to give individual attention to these minerals I believe it would be useful to define what I mean by 'strategic'. The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines strategic in the context of materials as 'essential for war'. However it is commonly used in a much broader sense than this (often, in fact, very loosely) and I prefer to define it as 'concerned with the acquisition and maintenance of power, whether economic, political or military.' A VITAL SOURCE In dealing with the individual minerals I have quoted statistics which are contained in Tables 1, 2 and 3. Table 1 clearly shows the absolute size of the South African mineral industry. However, it can also be used to demonstrate the importance of the industry to the South African economy if compared with the GNP in 1980 of about R60 billion. Table 4 illustrates clearly how important South Africa is as a supplier of these minerals to most of the important industrialized countries of the Western World. Gold If anyone had any doubts about the inclusion of gold in a list of strategic minerals I am sure that the above definition of 'strategic' will convince them that it certainly belongs there. Similarly no one is likely to have any doubt about the fact that South Africa is a vital source of supply. Tables 2 and 3 show that in 1980 we had 51% of the world's reserves and accounted for 55% of world production. The figures for the Western World are considerably higher. The only other major producer, of course, is Russia, with small but significant production in the Pacific Rim area coming from Australia, Canada, Latin America, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and the U.S. All South African mine gold production is shipped in bullion form containing about 88% gold and 9% silver to the Rand Refinery which is a modern refinery with large scale units capable of refining half a ton of bullion at a time. The Refinery is equipped to produce standard 'good delivery' gold as well as 9999 gold and 999 silver. The Refinery also produces the 22 karat blanks which are, used by the South African Mint to produce Kruger Rands. It goes without saying that the South African gold mining industry leads the world in all aspects of deep-level, narrow-reef mining technology. The industry's metallurgists, too, have a record of tenacious and continuing efforts to improve extraction to the level of the present finely honed efficient process used on all the modern mines. Uranium In 1980 South Africa had 14% of the uranium reserves of the Western World and accounted for 14% of production. In view of the paucity of data I am not in a position to estimate figures for the total world. All the other major sources of uranium in the Western World are situated around the Pacific Rim, with the U.S. and Canada already being major suppliers and accounting for 38% and 17% of Western World production in 1980. Australian production at the time was small but they have very large reserves and production is already rising rapidly. The U.S., Canada and Australia account respectively for 22%, 19% and 29% of the uranium reserves of the Western World. South Africa has been a major producer continuously for 30 years. Nearly all the uranium produced, amounting to about 115 000 tons up to the end of 1981, was a by-product or co-product of gold extraction. During that time the industry has frequently led the world in technological innovation, and has established a reputation as a reliable producer of a consistent, high-grade product. In the latter respect, it is helped by the fact that production is marketed by one company, Nuclear Fuels Corporation, which also blends, dries and calcines the product from the individual mines and samples and assays it before shipping. Diamonds Diamonds are the rock on which the South African mineral industry is founded. The discovery of diamonds in 1866 gave rise to the first major mineral industry in the country and the profits from diamond mining helped to finance the gold mining industry 20 years later. Although now overshadowed by gold, diamonds are still very important in the overall picture of mineral production and exports, as can be seen in Table 1. There are really three separate diamond markets - gem, natural industrial, and synthetic - and, to be meaningful, statistics should be provided separately. Unfortunately separate figures are not available. The figures in Tables 2 and 3 show that, for gem and natural industrial together, South Africa ranks third in the world in production and second in reserves. In the present work, a critical assessment of the thermodynamic information available for the ternary system Ni-W-0 has been carried out; This was complemented by experimental measurements of the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the ternary compound NiWO, by solid state galvanic studies involving Zr02-CaO solid electrolyte. The assessed thermodynamic data, together with the phase diagram information available in literature, were employed to generate the ternary phase diagram for the system Ni-W-0 in the temperature range 1073-1273 K. The calculation of the phase diagram was carried out by computer optimization according to the "CALPHAD" method. The computed phase diagram has been confirmed at isothermal sections by identification of the phases present in samples equilibrated at defined temperatures.

The concept of using powdered coal-in-oil-mixtures (COM) as a composite fuel to conserve oil resources and relieve import supply problems is being vigorously promoted by the Department of Energy via the sponsoring of various demonstration units (1). The idea of COM as a useful alternative fuel has been explored on and off for over 100 years (2). The approach must be capable of grinding, mixing, storing, and combusting COM with presumably only minor equipment changes on oil-fired boilers. DOE estimates that 56 000 m3 of oil (350 000 barrels) could be spared daily if a 50-50 COM was used to generate electricity. Of course, the ability of COM suppliers to prepare and deliver a stable suspension of COM at reasonable economic costs must be achieved if the concept is to be successful. This report reviews the various methods used to attain stable coal-oil mixtures. Various physical-chemical principles associated with each method of stabilization are also discussed.

The galvanizing process involves the use of accessory equipment in a series of aggressive environments including zinc ammonium chloride flux, molten zinc at 45S°C (850°F), and acid for stripping of adherent zinc. An Fe-Ni-Cr-Co alloy has been identified which combines excellent strength and resistance to molten zinc and acid attack making it suitable for accessory equipment. The alloy was field tested by a commercial galvanizer as basket material and was found to provide improved life compared to original low-alloy steel baskets while cross-section thickness was reduced 44%. Additionally, other associated processing cost savings were realized.

We have investigated a new electrochemical process for preparing lead-calcium alloys. Calcium metal, reduced fiom a molten chloride mixture, forms an alloy with liquid lead cathode. The addition of calcium carbonate to conventional CaC12-NaCl electrolyte enables us to avoid chlorine production on the anode and replace it with oxygen and carbon dioxide. The ternary system CaClz-NaC1-CaCO3 has a range of melt compositions, where the electrolysis can be held below 650°C. In order to prevent the side reaction of carbon deposition on the cathode we have separated the anolyte from the catholyte with alumina diaphragm. The factors, which affect the level of impurities and the current efficiency of the process, are discussed.

Bureau of Mines research has not included analyses of mining dredge safety since 1948. Because of the increasing use of dredges, 63 fatal accidents and several hundred nonfatal injury accidents involving dredges were examined. Also, 31 working dredges and 3 dredge manufacturers were visited to acquire qualitative information. Drowning accidents represented 59 pct of the fatalities and are delineated in detail. Also, countermeasures against other hazards are discussed.

Uranium mill tailings, waste products of uranium extraction, contain hazardous constituents that if released into the atmosphere and groundwater could threaten our health and environment. To provide for safe disposal and control of these tailings, Congress enacted the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-604). Subsequently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established standards for tailings disposal that limit radon emission into the air to 20 pCi m-2s-1 on an annual average basis (EPA 1983). The design life of the impoundment is to be 1000 years where practicable, but 200 years at least. To facilitate the design of containment systems that will meet the EPA standards, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are sponsoring research at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL)* to develop the necessary technology. Earthen and asphalt materials have been evaluated for use as radon barriers (Hartley 1983) and as liners to minimize leaching (Buelt 1983). Herbicide and rock barriers against biological intrusion have been evaluated (Cline 1982). Surface stabilization techniques have been investigated to maintain the long-term effectiveness of a containment system that must be protected from wind and water erosion, chemical and physical degradation, and biological disturbance.
