The Bauschinger effect, or rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve upon reloading, represents a temporary apparent softness that is more pronounced at large strains than small and for complete unloading than for partial unloading. Interrupted creep tests on copper exhibit a similar temporary softness (high creep rate) upon reloading. The fact that the strainwise dying-out time of these effects is the same in both tensile and creep tests shows that they are related. Thus, the term Bauschinger effect appears to embrace behavior following partial or complete unloading and reloading in addition to behavior following reversed loading. It is suggested that the term may properly apply also to certain creep behaviors following a small load decrement. INTERRUPTED tensile tests at low temperatures show1 a rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve for reloading, which indicates a temporarily low deformation resistance. In the absence of recovery, the curve soon rises to the value that would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. The rounding of the reloading tensile curve has sometimes been referred to1 as the Bauschinger effect, although the term is more commonly applied to low deformation resistance in compression following tensile prestrain. The unusually broad usage of the term Bauschinger eflect in ref. 1 seems justified by the obvious interconnection of the various behaviors to which it has been applied.' In fact, the following discussion will indicate that still broader usage might be desirable. The Bauschinger effect is common at room temperature but apparently disappears at higher temperatures.2 Interrupted creep tests and tensile tests were made on certified OFHC copper (nongaseous impurities exclusive of silver were 0.004 pct), cold drawn 84 pct to ½ in. diam, and annealed at 600" (about 0.025 mm grains) or 850°C (about 0.2 mm grains). The tests were made in standard creep or tensile machines, using an O.S. Peters microformer-type extensometer or, for the small plastic strains, a special arrangement employing General Electric magnetic gage heads.' Interrupted creep tests at room temperature show3,4 an initial softness after reloading, manifested by an initial creep rate that is higher than that which would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. "High tonnage, low grade gold mines such as Omai’s afford economies of scale that are unto their own insufficient to sustain profitability at today’s depressed gold price. Complimenting profitability objectives is the perpetual challenge to reduce operating costs and optimize unit operating efficiencies while being ever vigilant of issues such as environmental control.Key to achieving these objectives at Omai are throughput and availability gains, gold recovery improvements, cost cutting, a skilled workforce and reliable power generation.This paper attempts a cursory review of startup-to-date plant performance advances and future performance-driven objectives.INTRODUCTIONCommercial gold production at Omai commenced in January 1993 with annual output climbing to 250,000 opy by the end of 1994. A mill expansion completed in August 1996 increased gold production to 340,000 opy by the end of 1997. Current milling capacity is 20,000 in tpd (nom.) with actual capacity exceeding 24,000 mtpd on occasion depending on ore size and competency. Mill feed consists of hardrock (andesite, quartz diorite and rhyolite) and softrock (saprolite, laterite) at a nominal ratio of 70:30, respectively. Present day average weighted grade of the feed is 1.4 g/t gold.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONPrimary crushing, ore handling and the original 12,000 mtpd hard and soft rock SABC mill, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘A’, remains essentially as documented by Konigsmann (1 994) complete with poststartup modifications. The mill expansion, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘B’, features an 8000 mtpd hard rock SABC grinding circuit similar in configuration to Mill ‘A’ and differing only in equipment size. Mill ‘B’ includes a 9000 H.P.,reversible variable speed , single pinion drive, 32 ft. x 15 ft. SAG inill , a 7 ft. short head pebble crusher and two parallel 5400 H.P., 16.5 ft. x 30 ft. ball mills with dedicated cyclone packs consisting of D26 hydrocyclones."

The role of dedicated operational support in the ramp-up and stabilisation of the FeNi-II furnace for ferro-nickel production at PT Antam?s smelter located in Pomalaa, Indonesia is described. The furnace was uprated to 32MW capability in a rebuild performed in 2005. This primarily involved installing a larger transformer, coupled with adoption of HATCH water-cooled copper plate, waffle and flanker coolers with integrated metal and slag tapblocks, HATCH air-cooled copper fin lower sidewall cooling and HATCH vertical sidewall binding system ? ?holddowns?. Following a smooth commissioning period, the progress in attaining the preliminary ramp-up target load of 24MW is described. This initial target was set by Antam, subject to some prevailing smelter equipment constraints, particularly kiln capacity. Stabilisation of the furnace operation is discussed, together with some of the specific commissioning and operational challenges surmounted by the joint Antam-HATCH team. These included: ?Mastering furnace integrity monitoring and operation with copper coolers, especially metal tapblock planned maintenance and repair strategies; ?Transition from traditional ?immersed electrode? to ?brush-arc? mode of operation approaching as closely as possible to the productive ?shielded-arc? mode of operation within existing equipment constraints; ?Reductant selection and control issues; ?Utilising the sophisticated furnace monitoring to provide detailed indication and warning of potentially destructive furnace upset conditions such as Si reversion and CO boils.

For certain ferroalloy furnaces, such as ferrochrome or ferromanganese, there is still doubt about the mechanisms operating under the electrode tips. In this paper a model is built that does not call upon an arc. The medium is best described as an electrically conducting slurry, a mixture of liquids, solids and gas. There are two sources of propulsion, the Lorentz force within the conducting part and buoyancy generated by CO bubbles, creating two opposed poloidal circulation loops, downward below the electrode axis and upward further out.

Permanent mould casting may be regarded as a near net shape manufacturing process where simple to very complex shaped engineering components are fabricated with high degree of precision in a metallic mould, In this group, High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC), have attracted more attention because of its production rate, where both liquid and semisolid metals (SSM) can be cast with high degree of precision and versatility. The SEED process, Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device, the new process for semi solid metals slurry production route, consists of two steps: The initial step involves extracting specified amount of heat from the molten metal to generate liquid-solid slurry, i.e, mushy structure, followed by drainage of remaining liquid to produce a compact free standing feedstock for rheocasting operation. In this paper, microstructural evolution during the process and some initial casting results of automotive components an also reported.

The concern for air pollution goes back centuries as will be seen from this quotation : "Strife and coal, it seems, have a hand-in-hand historical relationship. It was thought by some . . . in the Middle Ages that burning coal filled the air with dangerous poisons. So great was the concern that in 1306 King Edward I of England passed the first and unquestionably the harshest air pollution legislation edict that history will record. His proclamation declared the use of coal an act punishable by death." As related to coal mining, the air pollution problem is primarily that of its customer when using the fuel. Thus the major impact relates to markets for coal rather than the actual mining operation itself. In the vicinity of the coal mine the problem is principally related to fugitive dust from roads, transfer facilities, loading facilities, crushers, etc., and particulate matter (dust or fly ash) from thermal dryers and air cleaning tables. FUGITIVE DUST Most state air pollution regulatory agencies now have rules and regulations requiring control of fugitive dust. Fugitive dust has been defined by the courts as particulate matter other than that emanating from a specific point such as a stack or chimney. A typical air pollution control agency regulation reads as follows : “Fugitive Dust " "No person shall cause, suffer, allow, or permit any material to be handled, transported, or stored; or a building, its appurtenances, or a road to be used, constructed, altered, repaired or demolished without taking reasonable precautions to prevent particulate matter from be- coming airborne. "DURING the past five years, production of asbestos fibers has increased in all countries that list asbestos as one of their mineral resources. Despite the many small mines that have been opened in Canada, United States, Mexico, South America, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Yugoslavia, and Rhodesia, the supply still does not meet the demand. It is estimated that total 1952 world production of asbestos fibers of all varieties approximated 1,600,000 tons, with Canada supplying 966,382 tons (I), or 60 per cent of all fiber mined.Asbestos fiber brokers continually are offering odd-lot samples of chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite fibers to manufacturers, •quoting fantastic prices for tonnages •varying from just a few to 50 or more in a month. In many cases, the samples are not properly graded and contain quantities of rock impurities and finely ground dust.When vendors submit samples of asbestos fibers, the manufacturer should consider• them in terms of price, quality, quantity, and as possible substitutes for fibers currently used in his products.Grading of these odd-lot fibers in most cases has been poorly done, with resultant non-uniform fiber lengths. In some instances, a number of miscellaneous lots of fibers have been .blended for sale. This blending produces a fiber that is difficult for the manufacturer to accept as a substitute for the well-standardized Canadian fibers."

"70-foot deep rectangular-shaped bulkheads were built with sheet piles as launching and receiving shafts for a pipe jacking operation for new underground waterlines in a densely populated section of Los Angeles, California. The Press-in Piling Method was specified to drive 95-foot long sheets (a record for the method) to form the bulkheads for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s LA-29 (DWP) Connection Modification and Pipe Jacking. The piling was chosen because of its very low noise and practically vibration-free nature since the site is surrounded by houses, an apartment complex, and existing water lines. The out front areas of the bulkheads were grouted to let the TBM go through without major ground water leaks. Hydrophilic foam grout was also injected in addition to welding steel scab plates on the inside to seal them to achieve sufficient watertightness behind a few split interlocks. BACKGROUND This project was located in the Crescent Heights area of Los Angeles which is a few miles south of Beverly Hills. The project represents the completion of the last phase of the Stone Hollywood Trunk Line. This was an 8-mile long water trunk line that averaged 60 inches in diameter and was built to improve the reliability of the DWP’s major water system. This section of the project involved driving 2 deep shafts to allow for the installation of a 350-foot-long 72-inch steel casing using microtunneling construction. See Figure 1 for the shaft locations and the tunnel alignment. The challenge for the project was that this water line would have to pass beneath the Hollyhills buried box drain (15 feet high by 20 feet wide). Further complicating the construction was the soils beneath the drain. The DWP chose to drive the tunnel at a depth of approximately 65 feet to ensure that the ground conditions were uniform and suitable for the microtunneling equipment. There were two previous attempts to construct this work which failed because of poor ground conditions and very high water levels. This third attempt was critical because the DWP could not afford to have another failure due to the fallout with the residents being impacted by the project."

The coral contaminated with plutonium at Johnston Atoll UA) was subjected to gravity and flotation separation processes at the Soil Washing Laboratory (SWL) and also at the Johnston Atoll UA) site. Tests were conducted with the contaminated coral fractions referred to as the "HP-l" ( hot particles) and the "sludge". The gravity process tested was centrifugal gravity separation and the flotation processes were conventional Denver mechanical flotation and tall column flotation. Flotation tests were conducted using both fresh and sea water. Industrial fatty acid (anionic collector) was chosen as collector to make plutonium-enriched particles hydrophobic. The use of flurosilicic acid and sodium silicate made the clean coral hydrophilic. The results show that each of the processed when tested with appropriate size fraction and operating conditions resulted in passing the success criteria. It was possible to obtain more than 80% weight of the original coral as "clean sand" having activity below the JA site "soil screening level" of 13.5 pCi/gm. The field tests spiked with plutonium particles showed remarkable success. The effect of depressants, flotation medium and the coral pretreatmentis described. Finally, a flowsheet developed by the University of Nevada, Reno to treat 8000 tons of HP-l pile presently stored at JA is presented.

The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion research to determine suitable construction materials for geothermal resource recovery plants. Weight loss, pitting and crevice corrosion, U-bend stress corrosion, and electrochemical polarization measurements were made on selected metals in brine and steam process environments produced from high-enthalpy hypersaline brine from geothermal well Magmamax No. 1 at the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area, Imperial Valley, Calif. Cadmium (and by extension cadmium coatings) and a 6061-T6 aluminum alloy were unsatisfactory because of high general corrosion rates and, in the case of aluminum, severe pitting Molybdenum and niobium (columbium) were resistant to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion, Copper alloys corroded at rates that may preclude their use in wellhead brine, The presence of iron accelerated the corrosion of the copper alloys Titanium alloys were resistant to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in all of the environments. They exhibited crevice corrosion in some of the brine and steam environments and Ti6A14V pitted in the brine environments. They exhibited passive behavior over a broad range of potentials. Exposure tests were conducted on a high-temperature polyphenylene sulfide thermoplastic (Ryton) in the same environments. A 40-pct-graphite fiber-reinforced Ryton composite deteriorated readily in wellhead brine and failed in all of the brine and steam process environments; Ryton coatings on 316L stainless steel were adherent and performed well.

As the new millennium approaches, it is appropriate to assess the progress that has been made in mine health and safety, a matter of concern to management, labor and government. One can hardly look at the major events of the last century — from the birth of the US Bureau of Mines through the enactment of the modern health and safety laws — without realizing that the march has been relentless toward eradication of health and safety threats in mining. The progress is spectacular in mine safety and significant in mine health. In looking at the future, it is safe to assume that societal demands will increase for improved health and safety conditions in the workplace. So will the demands for greater technological leaps. The standards will for measuring success and the expectations of progress in creating a safer and healthier mine environment will grow. The possibilities are enormous of meeting these exacting requirements in the 21st century.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

"Alanx ceramic/metal composites are proprietary products developed by Lanxide Corporation who joined with Alcan to form Alanx Products L.P. in 1988. Alanx ceramic/metal composites are composed of silicon carbide in a combined alumina and metallic aluminum matrix. In laboratory slurry wear tests conducted by Alanx ceramic/metal composites have shown to perform well against other wear resistant materials. At the Kidd Creek Concentrator Alanx CG896 ceramic/metal composite was tested in two pumping applications, the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps. In both instances the wear rates of the parts made of Alanx CG896 were far less than the gum rubber parts traditionally used. As of year to date September 1992 the unit cost to repair primary cyclone pump parts has dropped 58% from 1991 figures. For the filter feed pumps the unit cost to maintain the pumps has dropped by 33% as compared to 1990 figures. The total savings represented by implementation of Alanx wear parts, based on projected year end unit costs for 1992, as compared to 1991 costs for primary cyclone feed pumps and 1990 figures for filter feed pumps, is $166,753. INTRODUCTIONAt the Kidd Creek Concentrator the cost to maintain the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps was a constant concern. Rubber wear part consumption was quite high and the manpower required was considerable. For 1991 the total cost to maintain five primary cyclone pumps was $244,062. The cost to maintain the filter feed pumps in 1990 was $72,076. A wear material was needed that would increase the time between repairs and that would increase the reliability of these pumps between scheduled shut downs."

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

Coal is a complex heterogeneous commodity that can be mined in a number of ways and needs to be processed to a homogeneous quality that satisfies the customer?s requirements, while attempting to maximize revenues. Only a small proportion of coal is suitable for metallurgical use. Export coals cover a wide range of qualities and some coals can be used optimally in the raw state for energy production. Critical quality parameters vary and can be a combination of heat value, ash, volatiles, sulphur, phosphorus, sizing, amongst others. The level of beneficiation is generally dictated by the washability of the coal, mining contamination, and the target product quality. The steps in the coal chain covered in this paper comprise exploration, mining selections, production, the washing process, and product delivery. Many points of sampling are needed to maximize yield at the correct quality, and some of these will be described in the paper. Keywords coal chain, coal beneficiation, sampling.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a pallet loading dust control system designed to lower the dust exposure of workers during the bag stacking process at mineral processing facilities. The system makes bag stacking much easier because the pallet height remains constant throughout the entire bag stacking cycle through the use of a hydraulic lift table. The system uses a push-pull ventilation technique to capture the dust generated during bag stacking. A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately 150 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-in air jets (approximately 1,200-ftjmin velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they entrain the dust generated during bag stacking. The exhaust ventilation system pulls approximately 2,500 cfm of air and dust through the exhaust hood. This exhaust air can then be dumped into a baghouse ventilation system, or filtered before being discharged outside the mill. During a laboratory evaluation, a 70-pct dust reduction was recorded for the bag stacker. The system was then evaluated in an actual working environment. The first field evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation in which one worker performed the entire loading and bag stacking process. This worker's dust exposure was lowered 76 pet when using the new pallet loading system. The second field evaluation showed only moderate dust reduction, but this was mainly attributed to an overriding problem associated with background dust and the cleanliness of the bags. From both the ergonomic and production standpoint, the system was well received by both the workforce and plant management.

Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

The use of uranium metal in non-ferrous metallurgical practice is dis-cussed with reference to its alloying behaviour and chemical activity. It is suggested that the more promising applications are in the treatment of molten metals to combine with impurities. Mines Branch work along these lines is described for copper, zinc, magnesium, aluminum and nickel alloys. It is shown that a cop-per-uranium master alloy (25 per cent U) successfully deoxidizes molten copper without detriment to the electrical or mechanical properties of the product at residual uranium levels of up to 0.8 wt. per cent. Additions of uranium to alpha brass in amounts greater than the lead impurity content were found to remove the deleterious effect of lead on hot-workability. Similar deoxidizing and malleableizing effects were found with uranium additions to nickel. It is thought that uranium forms stable intermetallic compounds with many impurity elements. A significant malleableizing effect can therefore be expected in the presence of other elements besides lead.

"The paper refers to methods and concepts used in the computer treatment of banks of geophysical, geochemical and geological data, relating to the exploration of massive sulphides. In particular, a data bank of 400 drill holes on independent conductors can be used to calculate probability levels of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides according to the characteristics of the conductor. Inversely one can, using the data bank and some cost assumptions, simulate and optimize the cost of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides by selecting drill targets among conductors according to conductivity, magnetism or gravity. Problems of noise, inherent in any simulation, are illustrated in this paper by the results of a study of the nomenclature of volcanic rocks of 27 drill holes by forty geologists. Compilations of data banks are long and timeconsuming, and it would help to standardize to allow exchange of data. We believe that such efforts may result in the discovery of more mineral deposits and at a lower cost. The present study is supported jointly by SOQUEM The New Jersey Zinc Co. and Cominco Ltd."
