This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the number of potentially contaminated sites in Sweden is approximately 40 000. The funding for remediation from the Swedish Government alone amounts to $A 60 - 80 M (300 - 400 MSEK) annually for the period 2003 - 2006. Uncertainties will arise when obtaining samples in field, preparing them in laboratories and analysing them. Different procedures give rise to varying errors. Using data for decision-making that does not truly represent the site could be fatal. Misclassification of soil could lead to unnecessary costs or to risks to human health and the environment. The total uncertainty of an environmental sample can be split into analytical uncertainty and sampling uncertainty. The analytical uncertainty is usually known and reported from routine analysis. The size of the sampling uncertainty is less well known. Hence, the question is how big are the sampling uncertainties for contaminated soil and how big is the analytical error compared to the total sampling error? A scrap yard and two landfills within a workshop area were investigated. An excavator dug trial pits and samples were taken with a trowel from the walls of the trial pits. Samples were put into plastic bags and taken off site for preparation and analysis using XRF. Sample preparation included drying and sieving. The samples were homogenised by kneading the sample bags prior to analysis. The sampling and sample handling were performed in an intuitively way without knowledge of sampling theory. However, Pierre GyÆs sampling theory was used for subsequent evaluation of the data from the site investigation. The theory defines seven sampling errors, which can be applied to sampling of soil. Some errors have a variance that can be calculated or at least estimated, while other errors can give some idea whether the bias is positive or negative. The total sampling error varied over three orders of magnitudes from sample to sample. The single largest contributor to the large variation in error was the contaminant level. When comparing the analytical error and the total sampling error the ratio varies more than three orders of magnitude.

Exiting WW2 (mid-1940s), the potential of nitrates (ammonium nitrate, calcium nitrate, sodium nitrate) and hydrogen peroxide for application as a commercial explosives for mining, construction, and other industrial purposes both became known. The technology stream advanced the development and uptake of nitrate based explosives to the point that they are the current global standard for blasting. Today, environmental issues are shaping the strategic agenda across various industries. Most global mineral resource, construction houses, and explosive manufacturers have publicly announced ESG carbon reduction commitments in support of COP26 Net Zero 2050. The mid-2010s saw a renewed interest in hydrogen peroxide explosives to eliminate NOx fume. Carbon reduction initiatives in the early 2020s provided additional impetus to investigate hydrogen peroxide based explosives for industrial use. Hypex Bio has recently pioneered the formulation, manufacture, and end-use delivery of a Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) on an industrial scale. The HPE is composed primarily of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plus a lesser amount of fuel and emulsifier phase. The base HPE is produced in a low energy intensity modular plant using industry proven mixing techniques. The base HPE is a white, highly viscous emulsion that is similar in consistency to base nitrate emulsions. To enable end blasting use, a mobile charging unit gases the base HPE to a detonable density. The HPE is compatible with current priming and initiation systems. Hydrogen peroxide explosives offer a significant reduction in total carbon emission as compared to nitrate based explosives. The production of ammonium nitrate (AN) emulsion is energy-intensive and not carbon neutral. Based on the EU Average and for the oxidizer phase only, 1 kg [2.2 lb] of AN emulsion emits 2.3 kg [5.1 lb] of CO2 as compared to the production of hydrogen peroxide emulsion that results in 0.23 kg [0.5 lb] of CO2. This is a difference of 90%. HPE contains no nitrates and does not generate post blast nitrous oxides (NOx). HPE generates no aqueous nitrate or ammonia pollution and is a solution to meeting increasingly regulated mine site water discharge limits. Hypex Bio recently conducted a successful underground HPE evaluation with a major mining company in Sweden. HPE blast designs were the same as those done with nitrate based emulsions. Rock breakage, advance, muck displacement, and excavator performance were equivalent. Ventilation and re-entry times were reduced. The mining company has expressed further interest in assessing HPE and is demonstrating industrial leadership by exploring this transformative explosive technology

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish, or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

METAL PRICES RISE WITHIN the past nine months, the mining industry of the world has been revivified by a spectacular price advance for the metals. ln fact, practically all geological raw materials have been marked up during this period. Reviving industry started the price rise, but the armaments race among the nations has intensified it. These factors, coupled with our decided building shortage, which must be made up, will probably maintain metal prices at decidedly favourable levels over the next two or three years, or longer. OUR MINERAL CIVILIZATION It is interesting to recall that in the past hundred years, while the white population of the world increased some three ta three and a half fold, the consumption of minerals increased seventy-five fold. In other words, ours is a mineral civilization. If we disregard short slumps, which we will occasionally experience, it seems certain that the bread upward trend in mineral consumption will be maintained for many decades into the future. Nations without reasonably abundant and diverse mineral deposits will eventually become nations without much power. Canada is blessed with a splendid store of minerals. Its mineral industry is now facing an exceptionally rosy future. What of the mineral industry of Nova Scotia? GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ALLOWED TO LAG RN NOVA SCONA Many years ago, when geological science was in? its infancy, much geological study was carried on in Nova Scotia. In 1827, Francis Alger began work on the iron ores in the Bay of Fundy region. In 1886, E. R. Faribault began his series of remarkable papers on Nova Scotia geology. Between these dates, many others published papers on the geology of the Province. The most outstanding of this early group of geologists was Sir William Dawson, whose published works on Nova Scotian geology extended over the period from 1845 to 1891.

The principle objective of the research effort described herein was to identify as rapidly as possible a practical trapped miner location system. Much effort has been expended in the past on the development of a highly sophisticated seismic location system [1] for trapped miners. Field tests of this system have shown that the location accuracy is limited by a combination of seismic velocity anomalies, timing errors, and in general by the relatively weak nature of the signals received at the surface. It was first felt that similar propagation anomalies would be experienced by electromagnetic systems, but to a greater extent than the seismic. However, preliminary tests performed by Westinghouse on the Operations and Maintenance Program, Contract No. H0210063 in 1971 and 1972, indicated that an electromagnetic solution to the location problem may be more feasible than a seismic solution. Thus a more concentrated effort was launched in 1972 and 1973 to more completely determine the feasibility of electromagnetic location systems for trapped miners. Two different approaches to the location problem were undertaken on this program: (1) A pulsed electromagnetic system was developed by the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse in Baltimore, and (2) a Continuous Wave (CW) System was developed by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) in Boulder, Colorado. Part I of this report will deal only with the development and results of CW Location System developed by WGL. The CW Location System was field tested at three eastern coal mines and at one western hardrock mine. The maximum overburden depth penetrated during these tests was 990 feet at the Robena No. 4 mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The earth conductivity at this mine was measured to be 1. 1X102 mhos/m, which combined with the deep overburden make this mine representative of expected worst case conditions for a coal mine EM location exercise.

State of the art sinter coolers are working based on the cross flow cooling principle. Thus, only a part of the thermal energy can be used for heat recovery application. The other part of the cooling air is brought unused to the environment. Furthermore, environmental regulation regarding dust emission and intelligent usage of exergy are getting stronger. Therefore, Primetals Technologies developed sinter coolers based on the counter flow principle. The cooling air passes the sinter bed in counter-flow direction enabling a direct heat transfer from the hot sinter to the air. The exhaust gas temperature can be maximized by using the total heat of the hot sinter. Due to the possible usage of the total exhaust gas amount, diffusive dust emission is reduced to zero. Two types of counter flow coolers are in the portfolio of Primetals Technologies. One type is based on a stationary shaft, in which the hot sinter is charged. The flow of the hot sinter is in vertical direction from top to bottom, in counter direction than the cooling air. The second type is a circular hopper cooler. The hot sinter is charged on top of a moving bed. At the bottom of the bed the sinter is discharged. The cooling air flows also from the bottom to the top, following the counter flow principle. Depending on the requirements, one of the two counter flow cooler types can be chosen for optimized and efficient cooling of hot sinter..

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Project financing challenges caused by declining commodity prices have heightened the need to improve project metrics such as minimising capital payback and maximising net present value (NPV). Khnaiguiyah Mining Company (KMC) recognised the need to improve early cash flows at their Khnaiguiyah zinc-copper project after initial studies showed the project could not provide the desired financial outcomes necessary to compete for investment dollars in the current market.A significant improvement to the project cash flow in early years was realised through simultaneous optimisation of cut-off grade, mining sequence and strategic stockpiling. This improvement was achieved by accelerating mining in the pits, stockpiling lower value material and feeding higher value material directly to the plant. The schedule required higher mining and stockpile capacities than the sequential mine plan although minimal change occurred in the definition of ore and waste as measured by tonnes and grade. The practicality of the strategic schedule was demonstrated by implementation in the production plan with excellent conformance.CITATION:Thobaven, D J, 2014. The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars arc characteristically of the 'fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public, and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes arc added to the face equipment machinery for which they arty required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. Occupational epidemiology of the nickel-producing industry has found that inhalation exposures to certain nickel-containing substances are linked to respiratory cancers and to nonmalignant respiratory endpoints. Establishing such a linkage, however, is complicated by the fact that some diseases occur long after exposure to a causal agent (i.e., some diseases have long latencies). Furthermore, most chemical agents (especially nickel substances) vary significantly in their toxicological properties and their concentrations in workplace air have varied over processing history. Because of these complications, it is critical to understand historical exposures to specific nickel substances. To assist in this effort, the author focuses on the history of smelting and its related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Ontario operations in the first half of the 20th century.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

This program was initiated by USBM to quantify the respirable dust problem caused by the use .of roadheaders in underground metal/nonmetal mines with special emphasis on this problem in uranium mines. The contract called for the development of methods or equipment to alleviate the respirable dust and to implement the solution in a mine. Attempts to quantify the dust problem were made in the following way: survey of MSHA records, survey of state mine enforcement agencies, survey of mine records, dust measurements taken at two mines using roadheaders. The results of this study are not conclusive due to very limited and sometimes less than useful data; however, the study does indicate that a serious dust problem could and may exist. If and when roadheader use becomes more popular, it is almost certain that development of dust control procedures and equipment will be necessary. This contract was concluded without developing this equipment since only one roadheader is currently in use in an American uranium mine and the mine prefers not to participate in the program at this time. This report discusses the available data concerning respirable dust problems and presents a solution which can potentially help to solve the problem. The solution requires the use of blowing ventilation, on-board dust extraction at the source, and filtration, as well as continued use of water sprays. The on-site tuning of such a system is necessary to demonstrate the degree of improvement possible.

INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DlnSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has potential application for measuring mine subsidence on a regional scale with high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, the characteristics of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and the effectiveness of DlnSAR for subsidence monitoring depend on the radar band (wavelength). This study evaluates the effectiveness of DinSAR for monitoring subsidence due to longwall mining in central Utah using L-band (24 cm wavelength) SAR data from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) and X-band (3 cm wavelength) SAR data from the TerraSAR-X mission.In the Wasatch Plateau region of central Utah, which is characterized by steep terrain and variable ground cover conditions, areas affected by longwall mine subsidence are identifiable using both L-band and X-band DlnSAR. Generally, using L-band data, subsidence magnitudes are measurable. Compared to X-band, L-band data are less affected by signal saturation due to large deformation gradients and by temporal decorrelation due to changes in the surface conditions over time. The L-band data tend to be stable over relatively long periods (months). Short wavelength X-band data are strongly affected by signal saturation and temporal decorrelation, but regions of subsidence are typically identifiable over short periods (days). Additionally, though subsidence magnitudes are difficult to precisely measure in the central Utah region using X-band data, they can often be reasonably estimated.INTRODUCTIONDifferential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DlnSAR) is a satellite-based remote technique that can be used to measure surface displacement over large regions with high spatial resolution. Under good conditions, displacements can be measured with centimeter to subcentimeter accuracy (Buckley, 2000; Massonnet and Feig!, 1998). DlnSAR also has high temporal resolution, and imaging periods typically range from 10 to 50 days (Rosenqvist, Shimada, and Watanabe, 2004; Roth, 2004). In the last two decades, the application of DlnSAR for mine subsidence monitoring has been demonstrated in coal basins in Europe, Australia, China, and the United States (Camec and Delacourt, 2000; Ge, Chang, and Rizos, 2007; Ge et al., 2008; Ismaya and Donovan, 2012; Ng et al., 2010; Perski, 2000; Perski and Jura, 2003; Popiolek and Krawczyk, 2006; Wegmuller et al., 2005; Wright and Stow, 1999; Zhao et al., 2014; Xinglin et al., 2014). Overall, these studies have demonstrated good data resolution, strong relationships between mine development and subsidence, and reasonable agreement between displacements measured by DinSAR and displacements measured by conventional surveys."
