"At its plant in San Juan, Peru, Marcona Mining Company operates two grate pelletizing furnaces for the agglomeration of 3.5 million long tons of magnetic concentrates annually. Line One, installed in 1963, was built by Lurgi as a downdraft process furnace utilizing a furnace fan for the recuperation of hot gases from the cooling zone. This line was modified in 1966 to include both updraft drying and downdraft drying, and the original roof burners were converted to side-wall burners. Line Two, a Dravo-Lurgi furnace with an annual capacity of 2.4 million long tons, was built in 1966. Firing of the pellet bed was improved by conversion from roof to side-wall burners. This modification also permitted utilization of monolithic refractory in place of pre-fired shapes, thereby improving over-all furnace availability and reducing refractory stock requirements from 154 different shapes to 18.Data are presented to compare operating performance of the Dravo-Lurgi furnace and the modified Lurgi furnace. These data show 30 per cent lower fuel oil consumption and 10 per cent higher capacity per unit grate area for the Dravo-Lurgi furnace, which also averages higher availability due to greater operating flexibility."

When looking for indicators for the mining business ? and these days who isn?t? ? one might need to look no further than the SME Annual Meeting. Held in Phoenix, AZ Feb. 28 to March 3, the meeting was, by almost any measure, a record-breaking success. Attendance included 4,937 industry professionals. Many of whom, feeling rejuvenated following the worst economic recession since the great depression, were greeted with a record 630 exhibits and 103 technical sessions covering all aspects of the mining and minerals business. Adding to the general optimism of the future was a celebration of the past and re-cent achievements in safety and health. The theme of this year?s meeting was ?Celebrating 100 Years of Mining Research? and the emphasis on advancements in safety was evident from the keynote address that kicked off the conference, to the field trips, to the Resolution and Safford mines that concluded the meeting.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

The current economic crisis and growing environmental issues have led the steel industry to face the simultaneous effects of low demand and production overcapacity in a globalized steel market, whilst confronting high energy prices and the need to comply with the green economy. Heat Recovery from waste gas of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) represents one of the greatest opportunities to reduce the consumption of primary energy and reduce the CO2 emissions in steel industry. The heat of the off-gas, if recovered and converted into electrical power, can make the whole Fumes Treatment Plant autonomous from the electric point of view, thus making it a “Zero-Energy FTP”. The concept is to substitute the Cooling Components (Water Cooled Panels and Air Cooler) are substituted with Heat Recovery Components (Hot Water Cooled Panels and Heat Exchanger). The recovered heat can be converted into power by using an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbine. The heat recovered by the HWCP and the Heat Exchanger is characterized by a variable thermal power, which affects the efficiency of the downstream ORC System. Danieli, in collaboration with the University of Udine, has developed the Thermal Stabilizer Unit (TSU). Danieli has realized the first step towards Zero Energy FTP at ABS steelmaking plant (Italy) by installing a CHR® - Clean Heat Recovery. This plant has been started up on 17th October 2014. The HMI of the CHR® is integrated in the HMI of the furnace, so all the process could be kept under control by the furnace operator. At ABS recovered thermal power reaches 5.5 MW. The max power production reached with CHR plant in ABS (over 1MW of electric power) consents an annual saving of approx. 500,000 EUR.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. Channel sand bodies ("wants" or "cutouts") are deposits of barren, hard sediments which interrupt production and pose safety hazards when encountered in underground coal mining. To locate these costly impediments to mining in advance, from the surface of the ground, the seismic reflection method is recommended. High-resolution (high frequency) techniques for shallow seismic exploration of coal beds have been worked out and are reported here, including a field example. Newly-developed high-frequency, digital recording equipment was used, together with light-weight shot-drilling equipment and a variety of down-hole seismic impulse sources. Techniques for rapid but complete coverage of a coal prospect area with a crew of 2 to 6 men n 2 or 3 vehicles are described in detail.

In a race to save the planet of its rapidly depleting natural resources, the use of Secondary Raw Materials (SRMs) as replacements in several processes is currently intensively pursued. In fact, this is currently one of the European Union (EU)’s mandates. Valorization of SRMs is consistent with circular economy, where resource efficiency is maximized for the benefit of both businesses and the environment. In line with this mandate, this paper focuses on investigating process phenomena related to hydrometallurgical recycling of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust. In the experimental study, selective dissolution of zinc and other metals is investigated to acquire a recyclable leach residue. Based on the experimental and theoretical investigations, zinc could be extracted from the EAF dust and a recyclable leach residue produced, having chemical composition suitable as a feed material into electric arc furnace.

THE public generally has-become aware that there is something wrong with the coal industry and a clamor has arisen for an explanation if not a remedy for this disorder. It is only reasonable that this Institute be looked to for a diagnosis to show the way for some other .agency to prepare the patient for prescription or operation. The subject is extensive, widely diversified, and beyond the efforts of an individual to cover completely; one of the objects of this paper is the initiating of a symposium on the non- technical factors essential to an understanding of the bituminous coal industry. The present condition of the coal industry cannot be described in a few words but, in effect, it resolves itself into a simple statement: The average coal operator is losing money notwithstanding a firm conviction on the part of the consumer that he pays too much for his coal. Without enumerating the many and varied. factors which contribute to this condition, this paper will be devoted to the interrelation of taxation and ownership of coal and its effect on finance

"Crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) has been pointed out as the most stable compound to immobilize arsenic for disposal due to its good stability performance according to EPA’s TCLP test. However, in anaerobic conditions, arsenic releasing is increased to undesired levels due to scorodite reductive break down, in eh <100 mV at 5.5< pH <7 which causes contamination of groundwater. In this work, the concept of encapsulation by controlled deposition of mineral coatings immune to pH or redox potential variations is presented. Aluminum and calcium phosphates were evaluated as coatings and the release of arsenic from scorodite previously coated with phosphates was substantially decreased when compared to the VALUES (obtained from crude scorodite, both in oxic and anoxic conditions. INTRODUCTIONThe widely acknowledged hazardous properties of arsenic as a soil and natural water contaminant and its adverse health effects when present in drinking water have led to very strict environmental regulations (Mandal & Suzuki, 2002) aiming at the drastic reduction of the presence of arsenic in the effluents of the mining and metallurgical industries.In Canada, the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations (Government of Canada, 2002) dictate that the maximum monthly mean concentration in tailings for arsenic must be lower than 0.5 mg/L. At the same time the new Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standard for drinking water foresees concentrations of arsenic less than 0.01 mg/L, which means that the leachability limit for the industrial waste is set at 1 mg/L arsenic (EPA, 1994; Le Berre et. al, 2007). One of the preoccupations of the mining and metallurgical industries is directed to the elimination of arsenic presence in all its effluents, especially since arsenic is commonly found in many ores mainly in the form of oxides and sulphides. After processing of arsenic-containing ores and concentrates, arsenic can be present either in solid residues and tailings, liquid effluents or in flue dusts. Several of these forms of arsenic waste materials are soluble and therefore may cause the contamination of ground water, if disposed of without further treatment."

Historical Sketch Occurrences of native copper have been known along the Arctic coast of Canada, especially in the vicinity of the. Coppermine river, since the early part of the eighteenth century (See map, Figure 2, insert). In 1769, Samuel Hearne, a clerk of the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company at Fort Churchill, was sent to explore the &apos;copper mines&apos; from which natives had been reported to secure copper for tools, fishing spears, etc. After two successful attempts, he reached the Coppermine river in 1771, accompanied by Indian guides. This hazardous trip was indeed a remarkable feat when one considers the vast distance covered, a great deal of which was barren lands. At Bloody falls, (See Figure 1) on the Coppermine river, Hearne&apos;s Indians swooped down on a party of sleeping Esquimaux, who gathered there each summer to fish, and murdered the entire band encamped on that side of the river. Hence the name of the falls. Hearne&apos;s knowledge of minerals was undoubtedly limited. He reported having seen the copper mines from which the natives were securing the copper, but he failed to prove the economic possibilities of the copper occurrences or to give an accurate description of any deposit. Sir John Franklin visited the area in 1821. He and other members of his expedition, namely, Richardson, Back, Kendall, and Hood, reported native-copper float to occur in the vicinity of the Coppermine river and Bathurst inlet.

Concern over possible wartime shortages finally resulted in passage of the Strategic Materials Act in 1939. As authorized by one section of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines proceeded to investigate deposits of seven strategic minerals with the objective of developing tonnages of low-grade material that could be mined in an emergency. During the war, the size of the program and the number of strategic minerals were increased, and the objective was the more immediate one of aiding production. Since the war, the size of the program has been reduced, but the number of minerals on the strategic list continues to be large. The objective has returned to that of 1939. In the course of the program, more than 10,000 examinations were made and about 1,300 projects were run on deposits of 33 different commodities. A considerable contribution to war production was made in six of the commodities investigated, and a minor contribution was made in twelve others. Substantial reserves have been indicated in 19 minerals. Private interest is currently active in some of the deposits developed in 14 commodities.

The Mi Vida mine , Big Indian district , San Juan County , Utah , is in an ore deposit of uranium and vanadium minerals disseminated in certain sedimentary beds of the Triassic Chinle formation . Statistical analysis of assays of samples taken from the ore body affords an estimate of the grade of the ore body and provides a prediction about the direction of best mineralization beyond the sampled area . The basic data analyzed are assay results for uranium ( Uз Og ) , vanadium (V₂O ) , and lime (CaO ) from 225 channel samples cut at 79 sample points . Through the use of appropriate statistical methods , particularly regression analysis , the grade of ore may be estimated more precisely than by conventional means , and the most favorable direction to extend the mine may be predicted . Frequency distributions of assay residuals for uranium , vanadium , and lime are compared to frequency distributions of assays without regard to trend . Correlations among these variables are obtained and interpreted . The statistical methods employed illustrate certain techniques that may be used to analyze assay data from ore deposits in general .

DURING the development of froth flotation for the treatment of sulphide ores, a certain amount of information was collected about a few of the nonmetallic minerals, and occasionally the gangue minerals in the sulphide ores showed an embarrassing tendency to float. However, for many years efforts were expended to develop reagents that would cause wetting and depression of these minerals. Among the nonmetallics, the minerals sulphur, graphite, and talc probably should be classified as &apos;natural floaters&apos;, and perhaps sericite. They respond to almost any type of flotation reagent, and their beneficiation by flotation had been attempted years ago. Flotation of sulphur is now common practice, and graphite was concentrated during the World War in many mills, most of which have now closed down. A talc mill has just been constructed, and another may soon be erected. Second to the &apos;natural floaters&apos; come the &apos;easy floaters&apos;, cassiterite, fluorite, barite, mica, colloidal gangue, and paper pulp from white water of paper mills. That these materials responded to some of the early flotation reagents, as oleic acid, has long been known; occasional references to their behaviour are found in the very early flotation literature and in that of today. In general, however, nonmetallic minerals, valued at $2.00 to $15.00 per ton, have for a long time been regarded as cheap products and not worth much beneficiation. Consequently, only high-grade natural deposits suitable for direct mining and sale have been gouged out. Furthermore, the mining of these minerals has too frequently been in the hands of &apos;super-practical&apos; men-men of no technical or other training, willing to work for a very low compensation. From the social standpoint, nonmetallics has been the field for small, untrained enterprisers with little money to spend on plant or equipment. But times have been changing. The impact of technically trained men on the old industry has revealed appalling losses and inefficien-cies and proved the value of processing materials discarded or avoided by the old regime.

In 1910 the United States Bureau of Mines was created. It was the outgrowth of a social problem stemming from the fact that 25,000 men were killed in coal mining accidents for the period 1900-1910. Something had to be done and congress responded to the people&apos;s demands by creation of this new regulatory agency. At that time mine operators felt the new agency was too strict but nonetheless new rules were developed and enforced and results were obtained by the industry which reduced fatal accidents to less than 250 per year by 1970.*Social reaction by the general public brought about legislation which created the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 This legislation was a direct reaction to the Farmington Disaster. Operators and miners alike said "we cannot operate under this law. It is too strict, requirements are unrealistic, production will suffer, .there will not be any improvement in health and safety, etc." Consider the facts: 1. Health and safety have improved. The 1972 frequency and severity rate was the best ever for the bituminous coal mining industry, Figure 1. 2 .Production per manshift has dropped in underground coal mines. For example, in West Virginia from near 16 tons/m.s. in 1967 to nearly 11 tons/m.s. in 1971-72. However, not all of this loss can be attributable to the Act, but certainly some is. (2) The betterment of the safety of coal mining was a prime motivation behind the coal law and from that standpoint the law has been partially successful, but the loss in productivity has been a real burden to the mine operator. Everyone should recognize that the law says little in regard to production--it only relates to health and safety. Production is management&apos;s responsibility.

THE total annual energy production from coal, petroleum, natural gas and water power has been increasing at a fairly constant rate during the thirty years ending in 1930. But since 1913 the demand for the competitors of coal has increased at a rate faster than that for coal. During the last twenty years, the curve of coal production has had a generally horizontal trend; in fact, the 1930 production of coal was six per cent less than that of 1913. Economists attribute this loss of demand to greater efficiency in coal utilization and to displacement of coal by oil and natural gas. These two factors are about equally responsible, and it is evident that research has been intimately concerned with both. About sixty per cent of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in 1929 was used for generating steam, either in stationary or locomotive boilers. A decade ago seventy per cent or more was used for this purpose. This change is due largely to tremendous advances in fuel economy.

Blasting as a process is the emplacement of industrial explosives into blast holes suitably located to a free surface and detonated. Every blast hole containing a certain amount of explosive charge undergoes impulsive loading when detonated and results in the dynamic transfer of a powerful shock wave to the surrounding rock. It is the shock wave that brings about rock breakage when the tensile stress produced upon reflecting from the change in material density or free face overcomes that of rock material tensile strength. However, this shock wave comes along with unwanted destructive consequences such as damage to remaining rock, ground vibration, noise and fly rock. The above mentioned consequences pose a great threat to the Community of Wusakile, Kitwe as Mopani Copper Mines Plc wishes to increase its production by expanding the pit towards the community that lies within 150 m (164 yd) from the pit rim. As a requirement from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), all blasting operations close to the community must maintain at least below the maximum vibration threshold of 10 mm/s (0.3937 in/s) PPV-Peak Particle Velocity or else risk closure of the mine (AMC,2009). In order to satisfy the above statement, a good understanding of explosives is required. This paper therefore presents the phenomenology of rock breakage by explosives with much emphasis on electronic blasting and how best this process can be controlled in densely populated communities. Factors affecting maximum projection distance such as, size of the fragment, shape of the fragment, angle of projection, the state of confinement of an explosive charge, were also studied. In addition, design faults, deviation in implementation and unforeseen geological conditions were also considered. The paper discusses the above facts based on research.

This paper applies geostatistical tools in Measure While Drilling (MWD) data to estimate the probability distribution of values in all the points of the studied domain in order to assess the continuity of rock classes between boreholes. The analyses carried out by Ghosh et al. (2018) and Navarro et al. (2019) have been used as starting point of this work to classify the geotechnical rock condition in four classes: solid rock, fractured rock, cave- in rock and cavity. From it, an application for the geotechnical rock condition of orebodies have been developed, aiming at characterizing the rock before the charging the holes to minimize unexpected rock conditions and to address issues associated with charging and blasting operations. Such problems are closely related with non-optimal rock fragmentation after blasting.

The impact of recent legislation on Florida phosphate industry operations has been dramatic. The most significant influences are described: the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969; the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972; and implementation of the Florida Environmental Land and Water Management Act of 1972. Further discussion includes: critical examination of the recently completed EPA Areawide EIS; potential effects of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976; the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977; current local and state laws; and summary of studies on radiochemical effects of mining, seepage from gypsum ponds, and dewatering of waste clays.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos&apos; blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. The zinc-lead ore reserves of the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, as of December 31, 1947, are estimated at a total of 66,100,000 tons of crude ore containing 2.18 percent metallic zinc and 0.38 percent metallic lead. The Bureau of Mines began estimating the reserves in October 1945 and completed the&apos; work December 31, 1947. A total of 38,900 acres of land representing approximately 5 percent of the area of the district is covered in this report. The work was confined for the most part to properties developed or partly developed by drilling and underground workings, and to acreage sufficiently drilled out to indicate ore of enough tonnage to make a commercial undertaking. The acreage in which ore reserves exist is widely distributed in all three States. A map of the Tri-State area is shown in figure 1. The remaining 95 percent of the area is not necessarily nonproductive but represents, possibilities for future exploration and development of additional mineral resources when and if economic conditions or national necessity encourage such work. Of the total reserves, 41 percent are in Missouri, 38 percent in Kansas, and 21 percent in Oklahoma.
