THE discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has grown with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover, despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting, and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. Radar monitors are now widely used in surface mining for monitoring slope deformations and predicting failure events. Their introduction has facilitated better management of risk associated with slope failure during mining and therefore protection of personnel and equipment. However, a wellrecognised problem is that radar monitors only measure deformation directed towards the detector (line-of-sight bias). This bias can lead to misinterpretation of deformation size, rate and failure mechanism, and therefore miscalculation of failure volume, which can significantly impact safety and productivity. This paper presents recently completed research and field trials into the feasibility of using low cost vision systems to mitigate this issue. It has been demonstrated that by integrating a computer vision system with an existing slope monitor, high precision tracking of features in the field of view can be performed. Combined with assumptions on the deformation characteristics, the true 3D deformation vector can be estimated. The applicability of using this technique for monitoring iron ore mine slopes is discussed.

THE scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the minerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; and further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by F. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geo-chemistry;1 and in the preparation of this paper I have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moissan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P.. The study explores a novel process to sinter porous iron ore with improved productivity and quality. The iron ore is pre-processed with calcined lime to temporarily close pores, preventing water absorption during granulation. This enhances reaction kinetics and early slag formation during sintering, resulting in significant improvements in sinter productivity, product yield, and cold strength property.

"In this study, a novel chromium–chromium sulfide cermet was produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). Conventional techniques for manufacturing metal sulfides are complex, environmentally harmful, and not suitable for producing complex-shape articles. To overcome these disadvantages, a new method for the preparation of the metal-sulfur precursor charge is proposed, which can be described as reactive casting. The first cermet samples produced with the SHS process were found to be very porous, brittle, and have low mechanical strength. The possible sources for the generation of porosity were identified and analyzed and the process for manufacturing the cermet was modified. By improving the manufacturing process, the porosity inside the produced cermets was reduced from 70% to 12%.IntroductionMetal sulfide composites are in high demand in the chemical, metallurgical, and electrical industries because of their valuable characteristics such as hardness, semi-conductivity, electroluminescence, infrared transparency and catalytic properties. Current manufacturing methods for metal sulfides usually involve one of two different principal methods, including a complex multistage wet chemical process involving the precipitation of the corresponding salts from an aqueous solution with hydrogen sulfide, or hot sintering of the respective elemental reactant powders in a resistive furnace in a high-pressure inert or hydrogen-sulfide atmosphere [1, 2]. These conventional methods for synthesizing ceramic metal composites are complex, extremely time and energy consuming, environmentally harmful, and rarely able to manufacture articles with complex shapes. Therefore, in order to overcome these disadvantages, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) was considered as an alternative method that offers significant improvements over the traditional cermet manufacturing methods [3]. SHS, which is a relatively new and attractive method for producing a wide range of advanced materials, is based on the self-sustaining feature of the highly exothermic reactions of the reactants. The SHS process results in high product purity, since the high temperatures generatedin the reaction cause any impurities to volatilize [4, 5]. SHS has low energy consumption and doesn’t require an external energy source and complex equipment, and it is self-contained [1, 5]. Since combustion synthesis has low power requirements, it is one of the few methods of materials synthesis that is feasible in outer space. Also, the process has a low cost and is capable of directly synthesizing articles with the desired shape, size and structure [5, 6]. The chemical reactions associated with SHS are typically completed in a few seconds leading to the formation of the condensed product. The high reaction rates and relatively rapid cooling in SHS reactions can avoid undesirable grain growth in products which often occurs with the conventional sintering method [3, 5, 7]. The traditional method for sample preparation in the SHS technique is to compact the reactant mixture powders in a steel die by a press to a typical density of about 80% of the theoretical maximum value, before igniting the mixture [8]. This method requires a large compression force to increase the green density and to minimize any pores in the green compact. To overcome these disadvantages, a new method for the preparation of the precursor charge in metal-sulfur by SHS is proposed which can be described as melt casting of a reactive mixture, or reactive casting in short."

"A study of the coal-based direct reduction behaviors of composite binder magnetite pellets was carried out in a simulating coal-based grate-rotary kiln process. It is shown that preheated pellets possess much better reducibility than fired oxide pellets: 40 min are required for preheated pellets to reach over 90% metallization degree compared to 100 min for fired oxide pellets. The compressive strength of preheated pellets decreases dramatically at the earlier stage of reduction, climbs quickly after reducing for 30min and achieves a high value at the end of reduction. However, the compressive strength of metallized pellets from reducing of fired pellets is much lower, more cracks and fractures being formed. In the preheated pellets, crystallite of metal iron is coarse. In the oxide pellet, a large number of interconnected crystals of metal iron are formed inside pellets, and pellet structure is very compact.IntroductionDirectly reduced iron is an excellent feed in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, and possesses low tramp element content and steady component. It is generally preferred in the production of high quality steel [1-3]. Nearly 64.44 million tons of DRI were produced in 2009 over the world, over 80% of which were produced by gas-based processes, the left by coal-based processes. However, the DRI capacity was only 600 thousand tons in China in 2009. The EAF steel production has exceeded 40 million tons annually, and most of EAF operate on hot metal as feed [4]."

This circular presents a summary of the domestic chromium industry, and discusses the salient features of the world situation , reflecting the literature of the subject . The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional detailed information on many subjects briefly discussed in this paper and desires to assist the industries and the public by giving further data in response to individual inquiries . It will welcome comment and criticism and any contributions that would assist in making future editions of this circular more accurate . Unlike most common metals , chromium is rarely marketed as a pure metal . The chromium industry deals mainly with chromite , the principal ore of chromium , and with ferrochromium , the basic alloy in which chromium enters the metallurgical industry.

"In the conceptual stages of engineering, benchmarking and empirical ratios are commonly the only references for estimating the production rate of greenfield projects. For underground mining projects, the lack of similar cases often makes the comparison difficult due to each project’s unique geology, rock quality or other singular characteristic. This paper discusses an analytical alternative for determining the maximum achievable production rate for underground stoping mining by modeling production as a continuous process. The results show that long-term maximum capacity depends exclusively on the achievable development rate and the development intensity of the design. In operations constrained by backfill, the development rate could be limited by the backfilling rate. Extraction rate and stope size only have impacts on capacity estimates during the ramp-up period.These findings allow shaping of the maximum capacity profile of a project. They can be used as a tool for quick assessment of conceptual capacities, and sensitivities of mining rates. Benchmarking tests compared favorably with projects, mines in operation and scheduling exercises. IntroductionA key consideration in the value proposition of a mining project is its capacity or production rate (Tatman, 2001). At a conceptual level, it is common practice to refer to empirical references (Taylor, 1986; Long, 2009), rules of thumb (de la Vergne, 2014), benchmark ing studies or consultant experience to estimate or validate a target value. There is, however, a lack of analytical methodology to guide an early estimate of the maximum capacity.Araneda and Gaete (2004) presented an interesting mathematical approach to estimate the capacity of panel caving mines. Using a continuous model, they confirmed that the mine capacity is essentially determined by the rate of area incorporation, in terms of area per period, and ore column height. Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps,

Several years ago investigations were begun by the United States Government to determine the most efficient methods of utilizing the coals of the United States. These investigations, which were continued along several different lines, are now being carried on by the Bureau of Mines, in accordance with the provisions of the act creating this bureau . . It was because of the need for more complete information concerning the conditions under which coal could be economically burned in boiler furnaces without objectionable smoke that tests were made at the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va. In addition to this experimental work a number of commercial plants in the larger cities were inspected to ascertain what were the best methods then in use for abating smoke. The results of these investigations were reported in Bulletins 334 and 373 of the United States Geological Survey. Because of the continued demand for the information contained in these bulletins, the original editions of which are exhausted, they are reprinted by the Bureau of Mines. The text of this bulletin, particularly the information relating to smoke ordinances, was revised in the latter part of 1910 and the early part of 1911 by S. B. Flagg, engineer, who has charge of the steaming tests being conducted by this bureau.

The policy of buying crude oil on a gravity basis , recently instituted by the major crude oil purchasing agencies in the Mid- Continent field , has caused a new and vital interest to be taken in the work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for preventing evaporation of crude . From the early years of the industry oil men have recognized that the gravity of crude oil is usually an index of the gasoline content , but it has not been so generally known that the gravity of the crude oil decreases if evaporation is permitted . In 1919 the Bureau of Mines began a survey to determine the evaporation losses of crude petroleum in its various stages of handling from the well to the refinery , The results of this study are presented in Bulletin 200 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Evaporation losses of petroleum in the Mid- Continent Field , Bulletin 200 , U. s . Bureau of Mines , 1922. ) and Bulletin 225 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Methods of decreasing evaporation losses of petroleum , Bulletin 225 , U. S. Bureau of Mines , ( In press ) The findings of this survey were so startling that soon after the preliminary report had been published , several tank companies began manufacturing vapor- tight tanks for the purpose of reducing these important losses . Since that time the development of this type of apparatus has been so rapid that today , every oil trade journal carries numerous advertisements of vapor- tight tanks and equipment as well as technical articles dealing with various problems in connection with the elimination of evaporation losses , whereas three or four years ago the subject was scarcely even thought of. The present report has been prepared in response to numerous requests for information on the apparatus actually being used to prevent evaporation losses . At this time oil operators are also extremely interested in holding the lighter fractions in the crude oil in order to prevent a lowering in gravity . The practice of removing the vapors from crude- oil tanks by means of a slight vacuum and extracting the gasoline from them is not discussed here .

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

A long-term production schedule for the LabMag iron ore deposit in northern Quebec, Canada is derived using stochastic integer programming. The optimisation formulation maximises the schedule’s net present value while simultaneously managing the risk of deviations in production tonnages and qualities by considering stochastic simulations of the orebody instead of a single deterministic model. The formulation also smooths and minimises haul truck requirements and ensures that as mining progresses, space is created within the mined out pit for the return of waste material.CITATION:Spleit, M, 2014. In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). Production scheduling is one of the most important factors affecting mine planning. A program -Mine Scheduler -that aids mining engineers with the setup of an optimum open pit production scheduling algorithm has been developed. A mathematical model for open pit scheduling that optimizes the Net Present Value of the cash flows was formulated. A simulated data is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. What's Best by Lindo Systems is used as the MILP solver in Microsoft Excel. The implementation of the algorithm focuses on problem setup, allowing users to easily evaluate, simplify, and develop the model that best fits their production scheduling.

This Bureau of Mines report delineates the coal reserve base of anthracite, bituminous and subbituminous coals, and lignite, by mining method and sulfur content, for coal-bearing States west of the Mississippi River. The parameters used to establish the reserve base definition are the result of a joint agreement by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The reserve base of low-sulfur coal, =10 percent sulfur, is 167,324.5 million tons; medium-sulfur coal, 1.1-3.0 percent sulfur, is 37,531.5 million tons; and high-sulfur coal, >3.0 percent sulfur, is 11,244.1 million tons. The reserve base of coal with an unknown sulfur level is 18,323.0 million tons. The percentages of deep and strippable coal are 56 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The basis for reserve base estimates and analytical data for this report was the Fuels Availability System, a Bureau of Mines data bank containing numerous data tin fossil fuels. Information contained in the system was obtained from publications of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Geological Survey, State agencies, private publications, and company data.

Improved process control can be achieved through the accurate and reliable on-line measurement of critical process parameters in real time. Over the past few decades on-line analysis techniques have been developed and applied in the mineral and energy industries for the measurement of process stream composition, mineralogy, particle size and flow rates. This has led to increased throughput and product quality while reducing processing costs and minimising emissions. The support of a sustainable mineral processing industry will require the further development of on-line analysis and control technologies. The application of developments in instrumentation combined with improved control strategies will lead to improvements in process efficiency resulting in large economic benefits to the industry, reduced energy usage and lower process emissions. There is a clear convergence of interests in being able to better measure and control minerals processing in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental impacts. Technology is increasingly becoming available enabling measurement across the entire spectrum of minerals processing from mining to hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. CSIRO is developing a range of these new technologies. A number of these developments are discussed in the present paper, namely: on-line particle size analysis and acoustic emission methods to enhance the control and optimisation of grinding circuits; on-line mineralogy of dry powders and slurries; on-line bulk elemental analysers for application on conveyor belts and in smelters; and the development of new sensing technologies for sorting base metal ores.

T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

The project was established in 1943 to investigate magnetite deposits in the northwestern Adirondacks by geophysical surveying and diamond-drilling for the purpose of increasing iron production in the eastern United States.In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the primary objective of the Bureau of Mines is the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, that they may make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. Maps showing the detailed magnetic surveys of the deposits and anomalies discussed in this report are on open file at the offices of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., and at the University of the State of New York in the office of the Director of the State Science Service, Educational Building, Albany, N.
