"The smelting reduction of V-Ti bearing beach placer by combined rotary hearth furnace and direct current arc furnace was studied in laboratory. It takes the aid of back propagation (BP) neural network theory to build the nonlinear mapping relations between the crucial process variables such as content of carbon, temperature and time and the degree of reduction. Then by the integrating BP neural network and genetic algorithm (GA), the optimized process parameters for the high degree of reduction were searched. The comparisons between experiment results and neural network simulation results show that GA-based on BP method can predict the degree of reduction with higher prediction accuracy. Calculations show that the integrated energy consumption of new technology is 580kgce/tHM, less than the current existing blast furnace.IntroductionThese V-Ti bearing beach placers (VTBBP) are secondary Fe-rich minerals formed by rivers, ocean waves, ocean tides and ocean currents on beach zones, their useful minerals are V-Ti magnetite ores. On Asia Pacific zone, such as Japan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, the VTBBP have large reserves and wide distribution. But so far, the VTBBP are not still comprehensively utilized. Therefore, in this paper, a combined rotary hearth furnace technology and arc furnace smelting method is studied for comprehensive utilization of the VTBBP. The main objective of this paper is to find optimum operation conditions for the production ofV-bearing iron and titania-rich slag from the VTBBP by means of the laboratory testing.Recently, neural network (NN) expected to be able to provide an effective tool because of its advantages, which describe nonlinear mapping relations. With the characteristics of strong selflearning, self-organization, robust error toleration and accurate nonlinear relation approximation, artificial neural network can be applied to nonlinear process modeling based on sufficient training. Back-propagation (BP) training algorithm is probably the frequently used one in practical application. Genetic algorithm has parallel search strategy and global optimization characteristics, which makes the trained neural network being higher classification accuracy and faster convergence speed. So it is necessary to combine neural network and genetic algorithm. The nonlinear relationship between input and output presented by NN and the global optimal function of GA are abroad applied in the engineering and scientific research [1, 2]. So these methods supply an efficient path to solve the above problems. At present, it is common to study the optimization of process parameters by orthogonal experimental design, the method combining neural network and genetic algorithm is a novel and better method than orthogonal experimental design. Tills study organized the above advantages to optimize the process parameters for comprehensive utilization of the VTBBP."

The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

The geologic modeling of multiple domains is required for the prediction of mineral resources and reserves. In general, explicit methods have wide acceptance among modelers due to the ability to manually add deemed important trends and geological features into the models. As an alternative, implicit geologic modeling techniques are increasingly adopted to reduce professional time requirements. These methods aim for objective, repeatable and flexible models by replacing the manual time-consuming interpretation of sections with the interpolation of signed distance values. These techniques, however, have been developed for the binary case of two domains at a time. The current paper presents an algorithm that extends the binary case to multiple domains. The method is able to transfer large-scale geological features from data to geologic models. A case study illustrates the benefits of the algorithm and practical implementation considerations.

Many recent projects have been developed and mined based upon imaginary reserves. Imaginary or "geo-fantasy" reserves have cost many companies millions of dollars. The significant and varied technological advances in the mining arena have done little to curb reserve calculation problems. These advances may have served to increase the prevalence of reserve problems by putting more tools in the hands of personnel not properly trained or experienced in reserve estimation. Introduction The importance of the preservative treatment of mine timbers need scarcely be stressed here. Increasing the life of mine timbers will reduce one of the major costs of mining and also conserve the available timber supply which lies within easy access of the mines. When treated, several species of timber may be used which otherwise could not be considered, owing to their short life. Another feature which should appeal to the mining industry is that wood preservatives are a mine product, and the benefit to be derived from the increased consumption of wood preservatives due to the example set by mine owners is not inconsiderable. Mine timbers may be divided into three classes when considering preservative treatments. (1) Timber obviously not profitable to treat owing to long natural life or short period of time in service. (2) Timber that obviously should receive protection from decay. (3) Timber installed in locations where the length of service required will depend on future developments, so that preservative treatments might or might not prove to be a profitable investment.

"Mineral processes are complex operations that have been modelled, controlled and simulated by diverse technologies. A review is given of some models of mineral processes in the literature. A new variation of a dynamic process model of flotation is presented. Process models, describing real and relevant physical variables, give a good understanding and good qualitative simulations, but can sometimes require prohibitively difficult and extensive parameter estimations. Process control is usually best done on operational plants by the fitting of system models, which can home in on the plant?s observability, controllability and optimisation. System models can be of a form amenable for use in appropriate techniques for controller design and implementation. The control of milling circuits is discussed in some detail. While simulators use models to predict dynamic or steady-state information, part of their strength lies in their ease of use and their ability to test different types of specifications. Some results are given for a flotation circuit simulator that can be made to solve virtually any permutation of specifications.INTRODUCTIONThe development and application of appropriate technology can lead to better operation of mineral processing plants in industry, so that substantial benefits can be obtained from improved throughputs, efficiencies and product qualities. This paper addresses some of the principles and methods used in the quest for the development and exploitation of such technology. Although the design of processes is often the motivation for modelling and simulation, this paper also targets the use of modelling and simulation for the control and optimum operation of mineral processes. The two processes given the most attention here are flotation and milling.Technologies used in mineral processing range from simple to very complex. Simple technical principles, such as mass and component balances, can yield some simple and effective strategies for modelling and control. However, minerals in particulate form have such complex physical and chemical properties that there appears no end to the complexity that emerges, as more and more factors are taken into consideration in the pursuit of better results and understanding. The situation is aggravated by the complexity of mineral processing plants, which have spatially variable conditions within process units, and complicated interactions between these units."

In this work, a comprehensive field study was carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling was conducted to envisage dust concentration due to existing and closed mines in the region. The air quality modeling exercise predicted that particulate-matter levels of PM10 and PM2.5 might increase in the ranges of 3.2 to 23.1 and 2.1 to 8.9 μg/m3, respectively, due to mining activities when some of the closed mines will be operated in the region without controlled emission. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 at the selected receptor locations were in the ranges of 86.39 to 194.89 and 34.82 to 99.55 μg/m3, respectively. Adequate measures were suggested to control air pollution from mining activities, and an intelligent dry fog system was designed to suppress dust emission efficiently from mineral processing plants and opencast mines. The developed system has special features for facilitating eco-friendly mining.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

Abstract-The mechanism by which stratiform ore deposits of PGE (platinum-group elements) are laid down in ultramafic igneous complexes is not completely clear. Early studies by the author and coworkers on numerical analyses of the convective cooling of low-Rayleigh-number magma chambers examined the effect of suspended crystal load on fluid density, and raised the possibility that the growth of the suspended crystal load during cooling could split a magma chamber into several convecting layers. The lower layers would have a higher content of refractory phases than the upper layers, which would consist of more evolved melt. This paper considers numerical modelling, as well as theoretical and experimental work in other fields dealing with suspended loads in fluids. The calculations, which are based on the physics of convecting magmas, yield quantitative relationships consistent with the observation that economically interesting stratiform PGE deposits are restricted to large magma bodies, and also yield estimation of the depth in a magma chamber at which certain grades of mineralization may occur.

The JORC Code lists the three core principles of Transparency, Materiality and Competency as fundamental to how mineral estimates are publicly reported. But where the principles of Transparency and Materiality can be considered conscious choices underlying decisions at the point of disclosure, Competency is a self-declared position statement based on one’s confidence to defend a technical position (as well as the functional pre-requisites of institute membership and a minimum of five years relevant experience).Developing competency in the mining industry is an ad hoc process, generally left to the individual to chart through a process of osmosis from personal work experiences that lead to a sufficient level of confidence. Companies that actually present professional development programs leading to reporting competency are rare. And even once a person has followed a program, there is no specific outline of what constitutes technical competence.No doubt, there are persons signing off on mineral statements who would benefit from developing and/or updating their technical skills (they may not even be aware of unmastered skills). Equally, there are technical practitioners who are sufficiently competent, but lack the confidence to step up and publicly report their estimates. Confidence in one’s own abilities plays a significant role in deciding when one is ready for the responsibility of submitting mineral estimates for public consumption. In addition, a person’s organisational support, such as the availability of suitable peers and professional development programs, and opportunities to learn from a variety of technical projects contribute to developing relevant experience. Increased exposure in both technical breadth and depth enhance confidence in one’s ability and competence.The mining industry provides numerous opportunities through direct and indirect means to develop the competency underpinning a stable reporting code. This paper examines a theoretical framework and associated processes that could be used to examine how the mining industry, companies and individuals collaborate to develop this vague principle of competency. This paper seeks to initiate research with the express purpose of enabling more effective and efficient development of reporting competency in our industry.

"Mine waste rock management involving waste rock movement and placement, is a critical aspect in the planning of open pit mining operations, as the waste rock haulage cost can be the largest portion of the mine operating cost. The concept of sustainable development in the mining industry also encourages environmentally friendly waste dumps that have zero hazards to people and the surrounding environment. Therefore, a detailed waste management schedule must satisfy economic and environmental considerations. However, the available tools in the market cannot provide optimal waste dumping schedules to meet all these constraints. This paper introduces a user-friendly and automatic tool to optimise the waste dumping schedule, which minimises the haulage cost, and covers the encapsulation of reactive materials to minimise acid mine drainage problems. This tool has been developed by using a new mixed integer programming (MIP) mathematical model that considers both single-lift and multilift dumping scenarios. The application of the proposed tool on a data set collected from a gold mine shows that the multilift dumping scenario has provided a more flexible and economical waste dumping schedule than the single-lift scenario, and both scenarios satisfy environmental requirements.Citation:Fu, Z, Topal, E and Erten, O, 2016. 1. The investigation shows that there are two coal beds of major importance in Perry County from the standpoint of present production -Flag and Fire Clay -and two beds of minor importance -Haddix and Hindman. The Flag and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 840 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 720 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Coking coal producers often encounter variations in clean coal quality when mining multiseam deposits containing coals with different washability and coking properties. This paper describes how, for a single coal property, an initial clean coal specification with an ash content of 8.5% on an air-dried basis (ADB) and a free swelling index (FSI) of 5.5 can be improved to a specification with 7.5% ash content ADB and an FSI of 6. This is accomplished by sorting coal seams into two groups for processing and blending. A preliminary economic model demonstrates how this improvement enhances economic returns through a beneficial factor.

Three of the most challenging problems in phosphate beneficiation are discussed: flotation efficiency, resource conservation and environmental impact. Some new flotation machines offer the opportunity of reducing power and reagent consumption significantly, while increasing specific capacity many fold. Efficiency might also be improved dramatically by replacing the "double float" process with a single-collector scheme. Model based software control is a powerful tool for improving overall plant efficiency. Recovery of phosphate values from the phosphatic clays could extend phosphorus reserve life significantly. phosphate recovery from the slimes might be achieved by sizing-flotation, selective flocculation and bioleaching. Reducing the volume of phosphatic clays produced is another key stop to minimizing phoephate logs. Such a reduction may be realized by floating at finer cut size. Although an ideal' dolomite separation process is yet to be developed, a cationic flotation process may prove to 'be economically feasible. Loss of phosphate in the desliming stage is the major problem with most of the flotation schemes for removing dolomite.

South Africa is a leading player in the international ferro alloys industry. Historical factors that have contributed to this dominant position include an abundance of natural resources and relatively low cost electricity. A number of relatively recent developments are potentially threatening this position. These include new legislation affecting the mining and minerals industry, a shortage of some types of suitable reductants, depletion of surplus electricity generation capacity with resultant threat of real escalation of electricity prices and pressure resulting from the recent strengthening of the South African Rand. The industry is addressing these challenges in a number of ways to ensure long-term viability. Some of these measures include investments in more efficient technologies that have economy of scale benefits and are less dependent on expensive reductants and electricity. Local macro-economic impacts include new legislation regarding ownership of enter-prises, mineral rights and royalties on mineral sales, development plans for port and rail infrastructure, as well as initiatives to expand electricity generation and coke production capacity. The fundamentals for being a successful ferro alloy producer are still largely in place for South African producers. Therefore the South African ferro alloy industry will remain competitive and is well placed for continued growth in line with the international growth in ferro alloy demand. The industry should emerge leaner, more efficient and ready to respond to any future demands of the industry. This paper will cover the present status of the industry, the factors that are impacting thereon and a view on its future outlook.

"The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. A Outotec está desenvolvendo em escala piloto o queimador de baixa emissão de NOx desde 2012, resultados expressivos foram atingidos (o pedido de Patente já foi depositado). Em 2014 utilizando simulações CFD, os resultados atingidos em escala piloto foram reproduzidos com boa aderência e os resultados em escala industrial se mostram com os mesmos comportamentos em tendências dos resultados da escala piloto, se mostrando promissores também. O presente trabalho apresenta os passos de desenvolvimento, os promissores resultados e o próximo passo deste desenvolvimento é realizar um teste em escala industrial com o queimador desenvolvido.
