Flyrock is the second leading cause of all blasting related injuries in surface coal, metal and nonmetal mining operations. It is also a primary cause of property damage, monetary losses and “near misses.” For the period 1978 to 2008 flyrock accounted for 11.6 percent of all blasting-related injuries in surface coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. A large amount of published material has been published on the safety hazard of flyrock, on ways to predict how far rock will travel from a blast, as well as ways to protect mine personnel and neighbors from flyrock. However, flyrock incidents continue to occur resulting in fatalities and “near misses” that could have caused fatalities. It was only good fortune in some instances that no one was in the mine's parking lot or other unprotected area when flyrock rained down or in harm’s way when a large rock punched a hole in the roof of a building or other structure.

The paper presents the results obtained by the AC EAF supplied by Danieli at Kroman Çelik (Gebze-Turkey) after the planned upgrade to 150 ton. The EAF – 7,4 m diameter, based on the full platform standard design - is able to handle a maximum power of 114 MW and is equipped with the most advanced and reliable technology, including module injection system and the Hireg electrodes regulation system. Excellent results were already obtained with 120 heat size in terms of fast start-up and excellent performance figures. After the upgrade, productivity was increased up to 212 t/h, maintaining high process efficiency (365 kWh/t with 32,1 Nm3/t O2).

A computer simulation has been developed to estimate the chances of a miner making a successful escape while wearing a SCSR. The model takes into account: (1) training in the use of SCSRs, (2) apparatus integrity, and (3) the oxygen cost of a mine escape. This Bureau of Mines report examines survival odds for a prototypical escape, and illustrates how these odds change when SCSR training is improved.

In situ metals research to characterize the hydrology of a fractured crystalline rock mass in under-ground mine stopes is discussed. The objective of this study was to find the potential direction, velocity, and concentrations of a lixiviant plume, should leaching solvents (lixiviants) escape from a test stope. The study was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, CO. Since this was a method evaluation site, the lixiviant was simulated using water and acceptable tracers. The site is located in moderately fractured Precambrian migmatite-biotite gneisses of the Idaho Springs Formation. The data required for the characterization were obtained from geologic maps and reports, core logs, and air and water permeability tests. The acquired data were analyzed and applied to a computer model that calculated' the characteristics of a lixiviant plume originating at the stope. A sensitivity analysis showed that dispersivity, ground water velocity, fracture porosity, and fracture spacing had notable effects on the concentration of the plume. Assuming a saturated rock mass, the lixiviant plume would disperse to undetectable levels in a very short time because of a high fracture density at the mine site.

his paper reports an investigation aimed at optimizing the compaction of granulated hard-metal powder for the production of cutting tool inserts. The optimal compaction is that which yields optimal shrinkage during sintering, i.e. minimum porosity in the sintered part. Extensive compaction tests on 23 different hard-metal powders have been carried out and have shown that the ideal ?green density? of a hard-metal compact, i.e. the density after compaction, increases linearly with the apparent density of the powder. On the basis of this result, an equation has been derived, which allows one to predict the optimal shrinkage that a hard-metal compact undergoes during sintering once the following data are known: the required sintered density, the volatile content of the powder and the apparent density of the powder. Since these data are available to the tooling designer, this equation allows one to design tooling for the compaction of hard-metal, which leads to optimal shrinkage

Although there are many geologic situations which might be discussed at a session such as this, as I considered the problem, it became apparent to me that I should discuss a situation which has been of concern to me, and should be of concern to the geologic community. As a result, the questions which I will pose, and the criticisms, have not been arrived at quickly or easily, but have accumulated through time, to the point where I feel discussion is necessary. Very briefly let me say that my criticism of geologic mapping, of conclusions reached, and objectives or lack of such, results from my association with many areas where such studies have been completed, and resultingly my inability to comprehend the system of evidence or logic which supports extensive age-formational designations. The heart of the problem is that many conclusions resulting in geologic designations are based on weak or non-existent evidence, and such should be catagorized as hypotheses. Although the geologic community as a group does not approve or disapprove of such designations, it is evident that many or most of such designations attain a "status", and arc accepted as more or less valid statements. As will be shown, the amount of specific lithologic data provided in some quadrangle mapping projects is exceedingly slim. However, of concern herein is that the type of information presented at any stage is sufficient to warrant conclusions drawn. To see the magnitude of the problem, it is probably necessary to review some basic fundamentals upon which our geologic systems are established. The United States Geological Survey has defined a "formation" as the broad unit of geologic mapping consisting of a large and persistent stratum of one kind of rock. Obviously such a designation allows that a formation could be considered "time variant" in a horizontal as well as in a vertical context. However, other definitions enable a formation to mean units

A failed and stable Upper Group 2 chromitite pillar database was collected in 2007 as part of the PlatMine 1.2 pillar strength project. The database consisted of 177 pillars, of which 33 had failed. Most of the data were collected from various intermediate-depth mines near the town of Thabazimbi. Spans between rows of chain pillars were about 30 m. Pillar loads were estimated using pseudo-3D, elastic, boundary element modelling software. The pillar-load data were evaluated using a maximum likelihood regression analysis to determine strength parameters, following a similar approach to historically acceptable practice. The original formula was named the PlatMine Formula. This paper describes re-evaluations of the database, using a linear formula and several variations of the power formula. The formula providing the lowest standard deviation to the data in the database was considered the best representation of the pillars in the database. Through this rigorous process, a new formula for peak pillar strength was developed for Upper Group 2 chromitite pillars, which is unaffected by volume. The small standard deviation provided by this formula suggests a reliable relationship between strength and w/h ratio, in the w/h ratio range between 1.5 and 4.7. Accuracy, precision, and recall analysis confirmed the efficacy of this equation to the data in the database. Importantly, the new formula provided in the paper does not predict a significantly different strength to the current PlatMine formula, within the confines of the database.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act included the need for improved chemical technologies to address respiratory protective device inadequacies and refuge alternative development. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) invests in research and development to improve the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing technologies built into these mine safety systems. Testing at NIOSH NPPTL is performed using a custom-designed test system containing a chemical reactor and sensors in a constant flow of simulated expired breath to evaluate chemical performance for the scrubber materials. Current testing procedures focus on device duration or capacity, but do not report criteria needed to effectively optimize chemical performance. In this presentation, testing results which identify the chemical performance roles for CO2 scrubber components will be reported, and specific component chemical activities will be linked to both duration and CO2 absorption capacities. Chemical components being evaluated include hydroxyl, superoxides, metal, and amine active sites, distributed in salts, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and microporous materials. INTRODUCTION CO2 absorbents and oxygen sources are at the heart of closed circuit breathing air supply systems used in mining escape and rescue operations. CO2 absorbent technology was first developed for diving rebreathers and has been in use for over a century. Typically these devices include a soda lime formulation of pellets in the 8-12 mesh range. Larger 4-8 mesh particles are used in medical grade “low-flow” applications, since these particles present a lower flow resistance regime more amenable for use with resting individuals. Potassium superoxide and lithium hydroxide formulations are also used, where in each case the formulations involve bulk solid pellets or materials affixed to surfaces. CO2 capture technologies are now under intensive study in the energy and automotive industries, where the pursuit of optimal combustion processes has led to the development of new materials to capture, convert and store CO2, oxygen and carbon monoxide gases. Recent advances in nano-structured and high surface area catalysis have produced novel materials demonstrating chemical performance improvements in these industries, and these improvements may now also be adapted to enhance chemical efficiency and performance in escape and rescue devices. Higher surface area materials offer promise for improving the efficiency, or decreasing the burdens associated with the use of closed circuit respiratory protective devices containing CO2 absorbents. Novel chemicals that display advantages in chemical performance or decreased burden will be examined for inclusion in developing systems such as the next-generation closed-circuit mining escape respirator or refuge alternatives."

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a holistic environmental assessment tool that allows the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle, from cradle to grave (i.e., from resource extraction and transformation to final disposal, including production and use stages). The relevance of LCA for the mining industry is twofold. First, the mining industry has a role in providing the LCA community the data that allows subsequent evaluations of the life cycle environmental impacts of primary materials such as metals, as well as the environmental comparison of the downstream products of the mining industry with other competing materials for specific uses. Second, the mining industry can use LCA in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of its activities, identify their environmental hotspots and compare the impacts of available technical options. For example, the environmental impacts of different extractive and processing technology can be compared through the use of LCA. This latter use of LCA by the mining industry is less common. This paper discusses the use of LCA to compare sulphidic tailings management options. The paper also presents some of the LCA research challenges that still have to be addressed to increase the relevance of LCA results for the specific context of mining activities.

The demand for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing rapidly owing to the emergence of new cleanenergy and defense-related technologies. China’s dominates the world production of REE. In this paper, we review the ore characteristics of four typical REE deposits in China and discuss the conventional beneficiation techniques, including gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and hydrometallurgical processing of these ores. Some of the latest laboratory findings and industrial applications, as well as the development of novel reagents for REE processing in China are presented. The REE beneficiation technologies developed and employed in China could constitute a good case study for many other emerging projects being explored around the world.

A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

Bonds are required by state and federal law to address reclamation when the permittee defaults. Under various principles of law, a bonding company may propose to perform the obligations of the permittee, however, the negotiations with the regulatory agencies, surface and mineral owners and other interested parties can create a very complicated scenario that requires an understanding of the law regarding environmental protection, bankruptcy and surety ship, along with technical expertise in land reclamation. This paper presents the engineering professional with a framework regarding areas of law that pertain to surety reclamation projects and negotiations with state and federal agencies and related parties. Though presented in the context of the coal industry, the principles discussed are generally applicable to the mining industry as a whole.

Crushed fired brick waste, known as grog, screened at two different particle size, 840 (20 mesh) and 180 µm (80 mesh), was used in mixtures with clayey body to make typical red ceramics for bricks. The effect of the grog addition up to 20 wt.% on the properties of bricks fired at 700oC was evaluated. The results indicated that both the particle size and the amount of grog addition changed the fired properties of the clayey body. Additions above 5 wt.% of grog, with a coarser particle size, decreased the mechanical strength of both the dry body and the fired ceramic pieces. By contrast, grog with a finer particle size may be used up to 10% wt. without deteriorate the properties and corresponding microstructure of the clayey body.

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) systemin a blowing face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. This study evaluates the roof bolter machine CAC while operating in an exhausting face ventilation system. This study considers two similar locations to allow comparison with the previous blowing face ventilation (Zheng et al., Min Metal Explor 36(6):1115–1126, (2019)) study: (1) a roof bolter machine bolting the roof at 20 ft (6.1 m) from the face and (2) a roof bolting machine bolting at 4 ft (1.2 m) from the face. The environment introduces 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust to represent the roof boltingmachine operating downstreamof the continuous miner. However, the exhausting face ventilation uses an exhaust curtain with 9000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air. Two roof bolter machine working positions are simulated with the use of dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8%. When the roof bolter machine operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection since the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5%. Additional CAC airflows of 350 cfm(0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm(0.21 m3/s) were evaluated and demonstrated that dust reductions increased to 59.7% (350 cfm) and 72.0% (450 cfm) for the worst location where the roof bolter operators located.
