This paper examines a successful project implemented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and the Polymathian team at Deswik, aimed at enhancing short-term scheduling processes to reduce vessel turn times in the BMA Central Queensland coal value chain. The project’s objective was to digitalise the planning process to enable planners to make data-driven insights to improve the profitability of the value chain. The strategy involved developing a digital mining system that incorporates data storage, cloud computing, and the ability to meet the integration needs of both internal and external business systems. This was complemented by a sophisticated, optimisation-based, decision-support tool to enhance the planning teams’ ability to make timely and effective decisions.

The Industrial Minerals Milling Section of the Mineral Processing Division has been engaged for the past three years in a study of the separation of minerals, by means of electronic sorting equipment, on the basis of their colour. Considerable knowledge of the subject has been built up. Because the object of this study is application as a means of beneficiation, a number of examples of the separations achieved are presented. Introduction T 0 the mineral collector, the colour of a mineral may be pleasing, even fascinating; to the mineralogist, student or professional, it may also be practical. It serves, to some extent, as a distinguishing feature in many minerals, and helps to fix with reasonable accuracy the identity of a few. It may now become a useful tool of the mineral dresser. The idea of using a difference in colour as a means of separation of one mineral from another is not new. Hand sorting dates back to ancient time. However, the means by which this can be done mechanically was developed only during the past decade. This circular is the second of a series presenting methods employed in solving the technical problems encountered in the production of sand and gravel. The first paper3 discussed the methods use in prospecting and exploration. This one teals with the problems involved in bringing a raw prospect to the production stage and considers the various methods of development and the Factors affecting that development. Later publications are planned to present and discuss methods of recovery and treatment. The recovery of sand and ravel from natural deposits and their preparation for market involve a progressive sequence of operating steps or processes. Each step or process presents its own peculiar problems which require different angles of mental approach, methods, and tools, but all are more or less dependent on the step or process which precedes or follows.

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. The design of a rubble mound breakwater resting on a problematic seabed is quite challenging and expensive. In the present study, stage-wise construction of a typical section of the breakwater for a proposed port on the eastern coast of India is carried out. The major challenge envisaged in the design of breakwater is the subsoil strata which consists of soft clayey soil. As it is difficult to improve the soft clayey soil in the marine condition, construction stages are meticulously planned in such a way that consolidation takes place due to the preloading of breakwater, which in turn leads to the strength improvement without any special ground treatment. Thus, the breakwater is designed to be constructed in 7 stages. An initial geostatic analysis is carried out, followed by a plastic stress-strain analysis, consolidation analysis, and safety analysis for each stage, using finite element (FE) code PLAXIS. It is found from the FE analysis that due to the presence of the soft clayey soil, the critical slip circle was formed in the base. It was observed that the staged construction over a period of 2 years provides a sufficient increase in the factor of safety of above 1.5 at the various stages of construction. Hence, it was recommended to construct the breakwater with 7 stages over a period of 2 years.

The Ekati Diamond MineÖ is CanadaÆs first diamond mine and is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. The development of the mine supports sustainable development through the integration of environmental, economic and social considerations with the broad aim of minimising environmental impacts while maximising opportunities and benefits to northern residents and northern businesses. The environmental assessment and regulatory processes for the Ekati Diamond MineÖ were the most extensive seen in the NWT to that date; in Canada only uranium mines receive more attention. In addition to the regulatory requirements, an Environmental Agreement was negotiated with the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories to address environmental concerns not covered by existing legislation and regulation. Under the agreement an Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency was set up to oversee the regulatory process and implementation of the Environmental Agreement. Environmental stewardship is implemented through an Operational Environmental Management Plan, part of which includes effects monitoring programs for wildlife and aquatics where available traditional ecological and scientific knowledge are integrated to broaden our understanding of the tundra environment. A Socio-economic Agreement was concluded with the Government of the Northwest Territories to maximise employment and business benefits to the north. Voluntary and confidential Impact Benefits Agreements (IBAs) were also negotiated with four Aboriginal groups who use the area where the mine is located. The intention of the IBAs is to foster development initiatives and a partnership thereby helping to insure that benefits from the project flowed to the Aboriginal groups despite a lack of settled land claims in the region. All these were completed before commercial production in October 1998. Employment targets of 62 per cent residents of the Northwest Territories and 31 per cent Northern Aboriginal have consistently been met thereby ensuring benefits flow to residents of the Northwest Territories. In 2000, $316 million was spent to support operations at the Ekati Diamond MineÖ. Of this, 82.2 per cent of total spending and 26.6 per cent total northern spending was northern and northern Aboriginal businesses, respectively. The environmental and socio-economic monitoring results are reported annually to the responsible government agencies and potentially affected Aboriginal groups. To date, there have not been any significant adverse environmental effects documented and socio-economic targets have been met.

AT the last meeting of the Institute, Mr. A. L. Holley read a paper on "Steel," in which he proposes for it a definition so opposed to the one generally received, as to call for some remarks. Until within the last five or six years there has been no dispute on the subject, and it seems worth while to investigate the matter. Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. "1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

"In July 1943, the Bureau of Nines received an appropriation to investigate the beneficiation of Minnesota iron ores through the use of lignite. The broad objective was to find a way to link the large deposits of lignite in North Dakota with the low-grade iron ores of Minnesota. It was proposed that sponge iron might be made through new methods of processing, and one of the objectives was to determine the possibilities of gaseous reduction of fine ore. The problem of obtaining high-hydrogen reducing gases from lignite was assigned to the Subbituminous Coal and Lignite Section of the Bureau of Mines in August 1943.Through the advice of technical consultants and men familiar with the mineral resources of Minnesota and North Dakota, a tentative program of development was outlined. The first proposal was to study the gasification of lignite briquets in a standard water-gas machine. Previous experience with gasification of lignite indicated that the raw fuel would not be suitable for use in the conventional water-gas process on account of degradation, but gasification of lignite briquets appeared possible. Through the cooperation of the Northern State Power Co„ a series of tests was made at the company's plant in Grand Forks, N. Dak., on lignite-char briquets made by the Lehigh Briquetting Co. at Dickinson, Dak. These briquets are made by the Lurgi process, and they have been used satisfactorily as a domestic fuel. The object of the tests was to compare gasification properties of lignite-char briquets with those of gas. coke made from Kentucky coal, normally used in the Grand Forks plant. The tests revealed that the lignite-char briquets were not suitable for gasification, in the standard water-gas process because of disinte-gration and low efficiency caused by loss of fine carbon.While these investigations were underway, a joint Minnesota-North Dakota Development Commission was formed to aid in planning investigations on development of mineral resources of the two States. Some members of this commission were technical men, who with consulting engineers on the Bureau's staff made up an unofficial technical committee, and assisted in solving certain problems connected with gasification of lignite and beneficiation of iron ores. This committee has been of 'real assistance in guiding the investigation.A technical meeting was held in Minneapolis on November 10 and 11, 1943, for further discussion of objectives and certain technical problems. Results of tests on lignite briquets were presented, and several reports analyzing other methods of gasification were discussed. The Reyerson-Gernes process for the continuous gasification of lignite in an externally heated retort was considered from several angles. This process differs from others in that the natural moisture in the coal is utilized to help gasify the coal, and the volatile matter is largely decomposed. Although this process had been carried out successfully in a small steel retort, no definite design for a commercial-scale retort had .been developed. It was first proposed that the process might be carried out in a Glover-West retort. However, it was brought out that a Glover-West retort would require modification to simulate the process correctly, and that good results might not be obtained even then owing to the leakage of gas through the refractory walls and to an anticipated low rate of heat transfer at the gasification temperature suitable for lignite. Further, the probable leakage of inert furnace gas into the water-gas would be adverse to the Objective to obtain a gas that could be purified to 96 percent hydrogen."

Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. Oxiana Sepon?s mineral processing facility in south central Laos produces copper cathode using leach-autoclave-SX/EW flotation technology. Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid for the leach circuit. However, low pyrite recovery has been an ongoing challenge in the flotation circuit. Tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute showed that the pyrite losses to the tail are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines. In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-Oxiana technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt, and was un-available for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the Sepon low pH, high dissolved metal ion environment, and will not complex with ferric, ferrous, or copper in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which then was followed by on plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.

I.-THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM TO trace the history of the development of the Co-operative Committee System in The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, one must look backward about twenty years. In 1915 and 1916, the first years of the W ar to really affect Canadian life, there were sixteen hundred men working in the Trail plant. These men were, on the whole, a splendid body of men and pa trio tic to the core. They were almost one hundred percent organized, ninety-five percent of them be-longing to the Union of the Western Federation of Miners. Most of the tradesmen belonged to their craft unions as well. For example, there were ? local machinist, steel workers', electrician, boiler maker, bricklayer, and carpenter unions. The Company had always maintained an open-shop policy and refused to enforce membership in any union, but recognized the right of every man to belong to unions. The only exceptions have been the I.W.W. and the One Big Union. Both of these organizations have always been fought by the Company. By 1916, membership in the Western Federation being practically 100 per cent, the Company recognized this organization's authority to make agreements, and a wage and hour agreement was drawn up and signed by the Company and the local officials of the Union, and ratified and signed by the Head Office of the Union in Denver, Colorado. This agreement was for the duration of the war.

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

Geological discontinues in the coalbed, such as faults, sandstone channels, permeability facies, lithotype changes, and large scale partings in the coal seam, can cause intermittent production problems or produce unexpected amounts of water or gas from degasification boreholes. These discontinuities not only can impact methane emissions into the mine workings, especially if they hinder proper and effective degasification of the coalbed but may act as conduits for methane flow from gassy strata into advancing mine workings. The effects of these discontinuities are still under debate by mining and gas production experts. This study presents a numerical investigation using reservoir simulations of the effects of partings and permeability facies and lithotype changes on the production performances of vertical and horizontal degasification boreholes, as well as the emissions during longwall operations. In this work, the grid block was designed in a multi-layer 3-D structure which enabled spatial descriptions of the geometries and properties of the discontinuities within the coal seam. The studied coal seam discontinuities and their properties were distributed arbitrarily within the model. Production was simulated by vertical and horizontal boreholes. Degasification boreholes operated two years prior to start of the mining. The results of this numerical study show that in coal seams with major heterogeneities and discontinuties, the geometry and location of the boreholes are important for improved gas production. These considerations are also important for controlling methane and water inflow into the working environment during longwall mining.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of biodegradable composites based on aliphatic-aromatic copolyester/polylatic acid blends (PBAT/PLA blends) reinforced by açaí seed fibers, an abundant byproduct of the açaí fruit agro industry. The biodegradable polymeric composites were prepared by melting extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder machine. The fibers removed from the açaí seed were used as the reinforcement and PBAT/PLA blends as the matrix. The influence of the açaí seed fibers addition on properties of composites was investigated by tensile and impact tests, SEM, DSC, and XRD analysis. Correlation between properties was discussed. In addition, açaí seed fibers characterization by SEM, XRD and WDXRF have also been carried out. The addition of açaí seed fibers on biodegradable PBAT/PLA blends showed that it is possible to get interesting property gains in biodegradable polymer by using waste from renewable sources.

This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.

IN making a glass model of mine-workings, each mine will present some little individualities, to meet which will call for the exercise of special ingenuity. Having made several models, I offer the following details of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings, believing that with small changes for different conditions the method described can be successfully used in making a glass model of the workings of any mine. The model, Fig. 1, has the top, one end, and the front removed. The case is made of kiln-dried pine, painted with several coats of dead-white paint. It is made to take sheets of glass 24 by 42 in. in size, and is 18 in. high, the workings shown being on a scale of 1 in. = 40 ft., or 4800 : 1 scale. The base is made of four pieces of 2-in. material, well pinned and glued together. The back, of material 1 in. thick, is secured rigidly to the base by screws and countersinking. The four posts, 1.5 in. square, are so cut that. the front and two ends of the model fit in flush with the outside edges of the posts. The top rails, 1 in. square, are fastened rigidly to the front and back posts by means of small iron braces. The ends, front, and top of the case are of 0.5-in. material; the ends and front are held in place at the bottom by pegs fitting into the base ; at the top the ends are held by buttons and the front by cupboard-hooks on the inside. Hinged hasps on the cover, fitting over staples in the end-pieces, make it easy to lock the entire case. Before the back is fastened to the base, it is cut with horizontal and vertical grooves to receive the horizontal and vertical sheets of glass, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal grooves, spaced to scale, represent the vertical distances between the levels at the shaft. The vertical grooves are placed wherever cross-sections of the workings are desired.
