This U.S. Bureau of Mines report assesses the resource potential of trace metals present in commercial Ti mineral concentrates. Metals of greatest interest: are those defined as "strategic and critical" by the U.S. Congress in 1981. Metals of interest in Ti mineral concentrates are Cb, Cr, Ta, Th, U, V, and Zr. Commercially available Ti mineral concentrates were studied. Characterization and analysis of major and minor constituents were performed by X-ray diffraction, neutron activation, inductively coupled plasma emission, atomic absorption, and classical wet chemical techniques. Of the metals investigated, the Cb, Ta, and V content of some concentrates may be a significant potential resource, depending on their amenability to recovery.

"Microbiological metal recovery is an emerging technology likely to play an increasing role in commercial ore leaching, metal removal from process and waste streams, and perhaps ultimately in processing to yield metal products in specified forms or oxidation states. We are studying the potential for using microorganisms for the recovery of elements important to emerging materials technologies and for which domestic supplies are limited and/or low grade. Examples to be discussed include the bioaccumulation of yttrium and gallium. These elements are important in the production of new superconductor and semiconductor materials. However, limited domestic reserves and technologies for their recovery may cause supply problems. 1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W. Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil-lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. La valeur de la proposition réside dans l’utilisation de diagraphies à très haute résolution afin de modéliser les résultats de l’usine de traitement. The pelletizing process for low grade iron ores has undergone continual changes since its inception over twenty years ago. These changes have necessitated filtration equipment changes in order to produce a product suitable for balling. With modern techniques it is now possible to produce pellets of 68% Fe from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Low grade ores require fine grinding to liberate impurities This shift to finer grinds over the years has necessitated major changes in the filtration steps. Techniques are now available for producing suitable product from ores with Blaines as high as 3600 cm2/gram. This has been made possible by the development of high performance filters. Recent developments have reduced maintenance costs and produced higher production reliability. The paper discusses iron concentrate filtration from its beginning to present day design. It will be shown that the dewatering step prior to balling has gone through four generations of filters. Particular emphasis is placed upon hydraulic studies which have allowed today's optimum designs.

In view of the increasing environmental regulations that have been promulgated all over the world in the last 30 years, non-ferrous smelters and refineries have learnt and adapted to treat effectively metals'-containing process waste streams that need to be bled from the plant. However, anions such as sulfates, chlorides and fluorides-presently not a major problem ?are coming under increasing scrutiny and need to be addressed in the near future. The current paper reviews options for waste water treatment with reference to: a) types of waste streams processed b) process chemistry c) discharge options d) recovery and reuse of water and e) solids disposal. Methods to obtain zero liquid discharge ?a possible solution to eliminate discharge of above anions and residual heavy metals- are discussed with case studies. The long term goal of any non-ferrous smelter plant should be to have a zero liquid discharge philosophy-an approach that would become an epitome of water reuse and conservation.

Peña Colorada is a company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation of iron ore, serving the national steel industry. Established in 1975 as a stateowned enterprise, it transitioned to operating as a private organization in 1991. It is jointly owned by two investors, ArcelorMittal and Ternium, each holding a 50% stake. The mining operation is situated in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the northwestern part of the state of Colima, Mexico (Figure 1). It comprises an open pit mine and a concentrator, covering an area of approximately 2,300 hectares. The pellet mill is in the town of Manzanillo, Colima state, a port on the Pacific coast, about 46 km southwest of the mine. The pellet mill occupies its own property with a total area of 60.4 hectares. A gravity-driven concentrated slurry pipeline connects the mine and the pelletizing plant, located at an average elevation of 1,020 meters above sea level and 20 meters above sea level, respectively. Currently, Peña Colorada produces 4.1 million tons of pellets and 0.4 million tons of iron concentrate annually. In 2018, due to a change in the cutoff grade, the processing volume of the beneficiation plant increased from 9 million tons to 16 million tons annually. This led to a greater amount of information to process and characterize the ore extracted from the pit before its processing in the beneficiation plant. Consequently, Peña Colorada sought new ore control technologies to enhance ore selection, optimize human resources and data management, as well as minimize discrepancies between planning and execution. To ensure adherence to quality agreements with stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the ore characteristics before initiating mining activities.

As part of its research program to investigate ways of improving resource recovery and reducing subsidence, researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines placed instruments in the B-North ore body of the Cannon Mine, Wenatchee, WA, to monitor cemented backfill and rock deformation during mining. The vibrating-wire gauges proved to be reliable and versatile, and approximately half of the instruments are providing data after 2 years of use. A two-dimensional, finite-element model was used to analyze the Cannon Mine's multilevel bench cut-and-fill mining method and predict rock and backfill displacements. The model accurately predicted rock displacements, but the predicted and measured displacements in cemented backfill had a correlation coefficient near zero, indicating that the model should only be used to predict rock displacements and not backfill displacements. A finite-difference model was also used to evaluate the stability of a cemented backfill pillar. Results can be used to conservatively predict backfill stresses, but on-site observation of pillar failures coupled with in situ measurements are needed to make more accurate predictions. An ongoing evaluation of the mining system has indicated that filling the primary stopes tight to the back with cemented backfill allowed these pillars to carry overburden loads soon after the cemented backfill was placed.

Mining data collection, storage, and interpretation methods have progressively changed over time. Data collection, for the most part, has transitioned from handwritten notes and logs based on manual gauge readings to real-time data streaming through instrumentation capable of directly communicating with site-based data historians or cloud storage. Data collection and storage have had to adjust commensurately with the volume of data, leading to more complex database architecture. Geoscience interpretation methods have also changed; however, the first goals of modeling and understandings from first principles remain the same and are typically deeply rooted in historical academic work. Machine learning methods are becoming more common, available, and implemented by industry and practitioners. Despite the wide accessibility of machine learning methods, the population of geoscience subject matter experts in the underlying theory of this analysis type is limited. This form of analysis, therefore, must be conducted carefully and in conjunction with subject matter experts, on both machine learning theory and the field it is being applied to. This paper aims to provide background history on data analytics and machine learning, current methods and practices, and high-level geoscience case study examples, as well as take aways regarding the mining industry, potential pitfalls specific to geosciences, and possible perspectives on the direction of artificial intelligence in the future.

This paper deals with the effect of various bit geometric parameters on failure characteristics of rock material. Improvement of rock cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has been an interesting research topic for the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was utilized to study these parameters in the laboratory. Improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn wide spread attention over the years. Research shows that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was utilized in this study while bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Air borne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for the each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in static case to dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined in order to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

This report presents analyses of crude oil from most of the fields in the United States producing 2,500 barrels per day or more. The purpose of the report is threefold : 1) To present detailed analyses of crude-oil samples from as many al possible of the important fields in the United States. On January 1, 1947, there were 340 fields producing 2,500 barrels & day or more. Analyses for 283 of these fie1ds are presented. Fifty-seven fields have been omitted because the Bureau of Mines did not have analyses or the crude oils being produced. As one sample was not representative of the promotion from several of the fields, two analyses are given for each field of this kind. (2) To compile these analyses, many of which have not been published previously in a single report. Since the publication of Bulletin 291 in 1928, there has been no report showing analyses of crude petroleum from fields throughout the United states, but a number of separate reports according to area or state have been issued. Many of these are out of print. (3) To provide a means of ready comparison of the properties of crude oils from different areas of the United states.

Process industry measurement systems, once installed, are often interpreted as static black boxes delivering correct values as long as not proven otherwise. After first implementation and set-up with a distinct sampling frequency, they often run ‘forever’ without checking if this frequency is still appropriate with respect to changed raw materials characteristics, different process conditions or changed customer specifications. Failure detection is based on operator experience and skills (often close to an art form) and/or from control measurements of reference samples. This may well be too late for many industrial process contexts. An appropriate sampling frequency is a critical success factor for valid monitoring and control.Based on the methodology of variographic analysis we here illustrate how to design/re-design/optimise an industrial measurement system in terms of sampling frequency, discretisation and accuracy based on customer specifications. We also show how variographics can be used to monitor for deviations. We use experience from process industry to show how these methods can be used not only for product characterisation, but also for monitoring input factors, process indicators and measurement of these. The information hidden in the vast amounts of data that is continuously created in modern process industries can be utilised to cut costs in the measurement activities and at the same time contribute to early error detection. We illustrate by case examples from production processes at a nickel refinery, supporting the Lean and Six Sigma methodology. This will provide a standard operating procedure for monitoring the stability of measurement systems, and provide a basis with which to discuss how a variographic approach can be integrated with the Lean and Six Sigma approach as an online tool to map, characterise and validate measurement systems and thus avoid more cumbersome measurement system analysis in full detail.CITATION:Thisted, E, Thisted, U, Bøckman, O and Esbensen, K H, 2017. Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

This manual is intended to assist federal, state, and local regulatory and planning agencies, the mining industry and consulting engineers in determining the regulatory, environmental, technical and economic constraints influencing the site selection, planning, construction/operation and reclamation phases of a waste disposal facility. The information presented illustrates that factors affecting an individual site may be simple or very complex. This manual discusses methods for making future land use decisions, determining regulatory requirements, evaluating physical, chemical and structural properties of the disposed waste and selecting appropriate waste disposal methods and control techniques. Procedures and guides in the manual will assist personnel in assessing the complexities of waste disposal on a site specific basis. The major types of waste disposal systems are discussed and evaluated in terms of their advantages and disadvantages and applicability to varying site conditions and waste characteristics. Appropriate references following each chapter provide more detailed data on material presented in the text.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

Over the course of Dr. Robertson’s career, the ferrous and non-ferrous plants have seen enormous changes in technology and increases in plant capacity, essentially amounting to a “technological revolution”. In iron and steel, the “mega” blast furnace of some 6,000 m3 working volume is now standard (~10,000 tonnes (mt) of pig iron/day). Similar huge changes in process technology and plant size have occurred in the non-ferrous industry. As an example, the fuelfired reverberatory furnace, once the mainstay of the copper industry, has disappeared - replaced by large capacity flash and bath smelting technologies. The energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced has also been reduced considerably. Our understanding of the thermodynamics and mechanisms of metallurgical reactions, a field to which Dr. Robertson has significantly contributed, has made great strides. This paper reviews these changes with particular reference to the copper smelting industry, providing also comments on expected future trends.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.
