A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. First - aid training is an essential part of safety programs in the mining industry , but it is only a means to an end ; first -aid training will not eliminate accidents , but unquestionably it is of considerable value in any accident prevention program . Numerous features should be incorporated in any efficient , well - developed safety plan ; in addition to first -aid training safety work , to be reasonably effective , should include the establishment and maintenance of a safety organization , safety competitions between mines or sections of mines , safety- inspection committees , accident - investigation committees , safety meetings of mine officials , safety bulletins and posters , employees ' safety publications , Holmes Safety Chapters (which provide for monthly safety meetings of all employees ) , and numerous other activities looking to safe operation of mine or plant . These features are supplementary to the fundamentals of safety-- adequate and effective supervision and discipline . Years of experience , however , have demonstrated that first - aid training is a good accident -prevention auxiliary and should be made an integral part of every company's safety program . Many safety-organization plans have failed because they have been based upon the assumption that the supervisory force should be given full authority and responsibility for achieving safety and eliminating accidents and that the workers , who are most vitally concerned , are nonessential . First -aid training causes the employees to feel that they have a personal and full participation in the safety program and is now available so readily that no individual or organization has any valid excuse for not having it . Early investigations made with a view to bettering health and safety conditions among the employees in the mineral industries demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured employees because , under the difficulties inherent in the occupation , seemingly unimportant wounds , when not treated promptly, became infected and caused permanent disability and even death . Many seriously injured persons , brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers who were ignorant of the approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation

"Abstract-Measurement of natural radioactivity has been used in both a qualitative and a quantitative way in mineral exploration, particularly in the search for uranium. In the last five years, the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) and British Geological Survey (BGS) have designed, built and tested a new detector system that greatly improves quantitative applications in mineral exploration, especially on the seafloor and in the nearshore zone. The new system is an enhancement of an earlier BGS design. The major improvements comprise the use of a highly sensitive ?-ray detector, together with new data processing, from which concentrations of natural radionuclides may be deduced in real time. After laboratory analysis of samples, these concentrations can be converted into mineral percentages. Once the mineralogy of an area has been characterized, this conversion can also be done in real time.Thus far the system has mainly been used to map heavy-mineral concentrations in coastal subtidaland intertidal sediments. For such work the multi-sensor detector probe is towed on the seafloor and various parameters are recorded continuously. The probe contains, in addition to the gamma-ray detector, a water-pressure sensor (giving water depth) and an acoustic device to measure bottom roughness. The system, when used together with high-precision positioning systems such as D-GPS, enables the production of detailed maps of bathymetry, bottom roughness, and seafloor radioactivity or mineral distribution. These maps allow mineral concentrations to be readily correlated with seabed topography and sediment type. In the same way, ?-ray detectors could be used advantageously during dredging operations to provide on-line assessment of the mineral content of the dredged sediment as well as to guide the direction of dredging. Additionally, the same technique could be used to monitor the subsequent fate of a dredge spoil after dumping on the seafloor.Natural radioactivity arising from potassium and the thorium and uranium decay series has potential use for the fast and reliable assessment of siliciclastic and phosphatic impurities in limestones. Detection of such impurities may preclude the use of the limestone for chemical or cement production.Apart from its use in exploration, the technique has significant potential in mineral processing, particularly of heavy minerals. It can be applied as on-line quality control in dry and wet separation processes and for process control, by using decisions based on the results to control valves and other instrumentation. In addition, it can also be used in environmental monitoring of waste arising from mineral extraction and processing. In conclusion, the technique described has a diversity of applications in exploration, mining and mineral processing."

From evidence made available during the investigation, it was concluded that the first of a series of explosions occurred at 1:15 to 1:20 p.m. September 21, 1951, in an underground vault that housed pressure regulators on the gas-distribution lines that served Brighten. This explosion damaged the pressure regulators and permitted high-pressure gas to enter the distributing mains and individual-service lines. As a part of the gas-distribution system was not provided with means for protection against such excessive pressures, gas gained access to the interiors of many residences in this area and caused a series of disastrous explosions and fires, which took place during a period of approximately 2 hours after the initial explosion in the pressure-regulator vault. Two persons were killed in the first explosion in a residence, and a third person died of a heart attack attributed to the excitement that prevailed during the explosions and fires, Twenty-three persons were listed as injured. Forty-one residences were either destroyed or damaged - 11 by explosion and the remainder by fires, which developed as a result of gas leakage into residences. Fifteen residences were listed as "completely down" or "gutted." Unofficial estimates of property damage ranged from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. In view of observations made and information obtained during the investigation, recommendations are presented in this report relative to the natural-gas distribution system in Brighton, which may be helpful in the prevention of similar accidents in this and other communities.

The interpretation of coal seismic data requires a certain precision and accuracy to make the results more reliable. The signature of the seismic wavelet provides a host of valuable geologic information. Subtle features and anomalies, not easily observed in conventional black and white seismic sections, are enhanced through color attribute displays in terms of frequency, amplitude and phase. Coal seam anomalies like sandstone washouts produce a distinct pattern in frequency and amplitude displays due to the change in the net acoustic impedance contrast. Faults produce frequency and amplitude variations due to interference within the Fresnel zone that straddles the fault. The magnitude of displacement is estimated by studying the effects of faults on reflection amplitudes and frequency from computer-generated models.

Non-contact systems for measuring underground voids have used theodolites, reflective or non-reflective laser methods and sonar techniques. An effective but cheaper alternative is based on use of a Wild T1000 electronic theodolite coupled to a Leica Data DISTO and a Wild GRE3 data logger. The software used to process the theodolite data is a spreadsheet and macro combination, while Surpac, Datamine and AutoCAD modelling packages have been investigated for viewing the tunnel profiles. The main limitations were found to be blinding, when irregularities in the stope obstructed the line of sight, and the 30 m range of the Data DISTO model used in the study, although more powerful models are available. All three modelling packages proved suitable, with Surpac providing the best-quality printed images of the voids surveyed and AutoCad by far the cheapest alternative

The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry is not unaffected by the drought: not only is research lagging, but hard- pressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. This paper's thesis is not that mining companies should shower universities with philanthropy, but that a quid pro quo ought to be exacted: a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that may lend itself to adoption by our industry.

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.

Drainage of water from abandoned underground mines has become important in recent years because of safety concerns when mining near abandoned works or reentering abandoned mines for further development. Seepage from inundated mines causes environmental damage and may threaten homes and communities. Where topography permits, horizontal drilling can provide a quick and cost effective method for solving trapped water problems. The mechanics of the horizontal drilling operation as applied to water drainage are discussed in this paper.

Chemical and physical properties of surface soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the existing surface soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In Texas, materials from the Carrizo, Calvert Bluff, Simsboro, and Hooper Formations overlie the lignite. The Carrizo Formation consists of thick clean sands with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement of the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden from the Calvert Bluff and Simsboro Formations possess adequate water and nutrient properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation. However, caution must be exercised in vegetating these materials since they may contain acid forming sulfide minerals.

Rail is a short haul transportation alternative you must consider. Transportation today is the largest controllable cost in the total cost of production of goods. In fact it is the one cost area where aggressive management, using new tools, can achieve significant reductions. You can't control the price of metals in the world market, you can't control labor rates since they are tied to industry norms, and the price of raw materials are relatively insensitive to specific price reductions to your firm. Transportation is the one area where major savings are now being realized. Sample Movements First, I will give you several examples of short haul rail moves to make you a believer that they do exist. Then I will show you the reasons why railroads suddenly "like" short hauls.

The Los Bronces Mine and Concentrator, one of the three operating units of Compania Minera Disputada de Las Condes S.A. (an Exxon Minerals Co. affiliate), is located in the high Andes of East-Central Chile approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Santiago at an elevation of 3,650 meters above sea level. (Figure 1). Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is located at an elevation of about 500 meters above sea level and enjoys a very mild climate, similar to some areas of California. At the mine site, however, extremely heavy winter conditions prevail occasionally, with very heavy snow and the resulting snow avalanches endangering installations and people. At the same time, ideal skiing conditions are found at the nearby ski resort of Portillo and Farellones. Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the western hemisphere is only about 55 kilometers further to the northeast of the Los Bronces mine.

Canada is a major producer of chrysotile asbestos. In fact, Canada accounts for approximately one third of the world chrysotile asbestos production. Deposits are mined and the fiber processed in Québec, in British Columbia on the West Coast and in Newfoundland in the Atlantic region. Foremost among the Canadian provinces is obviously Québec. Some 85% of Canadian deliveries come from mines located in the Eastern Townships, a region which lies along the southshore of the St. Lawrence River, between Montreal and Québec City. At the heart of this vast territory, five (5) mining towns make up what is called the Québec asbestos region. Total capacity of the five (5) mining producers of Québec is about 1 366 000 tonnes.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. It is also used as feed stone or lime kilns. Soft-burned lime is a popular raw material for BOF steel production. It is also used extensively in insulating glass fiber manufacturing. "Basement construction is one of the challenging geotechnical concerns in the urban environment. Several types of retention systems are practiced to support the earth which is suitable for restricted access, rapid mobilization, fast excavation and cost-effective designs. A thorough understanding of geotechnical engineering as well as the structural mechanics is important for the earth retention systems. This paper discusses a project with various types of foundation solutions including monitoring of deflections during excavation stage of a retention system.A multi storeyed residential building (3B+Stilt+18F) in Chennai having structure foot print area of 1500 m2 has to be constructed on large diameter pile foundations and also to support the proposed basement excavation. Ground water table was encountered at about 6m below the existing ground level (EGL). In order to support heavy structural loads, large diameter bored cast-in-situ piles were chosen and installed. Further, complete retention system was economically designed and built, which includes installation of Contiguous Bored Piles (CBP) in combination of vertical grout columns behind CBP wall to seal the gap between the CB Piles, installation of inclined ground anchors, construction of capping beam, stressing and locking of installed ground anchors. A detailed monitoring program was in place and continuous monitoring of wall deflections is being measured at the time of publishing this paper. This paper describes the design and construction aspects adopted for foundation and retention system including the monitoring results during excavation stage of the project.INTRODUCTIONIn general, stage wise open excavation will be opted for basement construction where plenty of space is available. Due to urbanization and restricted space, open excavation became a difficult task nowadays. To overcome this problem, suitable retention system need to be selected to retain the soil mass. Selection of suitable retention system for multi-level basement excavation is a great challenge in geotechnical industry, especially when the proposed site is located within the minimum set back distance from the existing structures. This in turn calls for the advanced and innovative methods of retention system.Several earth retention systems such as Diaphragm Walls, Secant Pile Walls, CBP system, Soldier Pile Walls, Sheet Piles, Deep Soil Mixing (block walls) etc. with or without inclined ground anchors are being practiced worldwide. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the available retention systems in practice locally and keeping in view of present site conditions, the developer has chosen CBP system with inclined ground anchors so that all foundation related works of the project will be handled in a single package. The main advantage of such packaged solution will ease the coordination between design consultants and foundation contractor resulting in faster construction of foundation works which in turn reflect savings in time and cost."
