The phases and equilibria in the W-Co-C system have been studied by X-ray diffraction methods, metallographic technique, and thermal analysis. In addition to the 7 phase, two double carbides, called 8 and have been revealed. The compositions correspond to CO3 W6C2 and Co3-W10C4. The reactions leading to these phases have been explained and tentative diagrams of stable and metastable equilibria proposed. The basic reactions in sintering cobalt cemented tungsten carbides are discussed. THE W-Co-C system is of fundamental importance in practical carbide manufacturing as well as for the understanding of the sintering mechanism. Surprisingly little is known about this system, for the probable reason that all the important alloys are of two-phase structure and that the diagram Co-WC has been treated as a quasi-binary. This obviously is incorrect, because WC decomposes before melting. One ternary phase, 7, of composition Co3W3C has long been known. It was first studied by Adelskold, Sundelin, and Westgren,1 although the isomorphous iron-tungsten carbide was known earlier. There have been in the literature several reports of two 7 phases.' " Also the 7 phase has been considered unstable by Takeda4 and Westgren.1 The Co-WC diagram has been studied by Wyman and Kelley5 and a quasi-binary diagram has been published by Sandford and Trent.2 Takeda has published a tentative Co-W-C diagram, considering both metastable and stable equilibria. However, the lines of two-fold saturation are shown only partially and it seems impossible to complete the diagram without violating the phase theory. Therefore it seemed desirable to examine the system in more detail. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in the present investigation were made of powders of tungsten, tungsten monocarbide, cobalt, and carbon and were of the grade used in manufacture of commercial cemented carbides. The powders were ground and mixed in small stainless steel ball mills, using balls of the same material. Benzene was used as a dispersing agent. The mixing period was 1 hr, since this was shown to give suffi- ciently good mixing of the powders without too great a contamination from the mill. After ball milling, the specimens were pressed in cylindrical or rectangular dies. No paraffin or other lubricant was used and the small compacts had sufficient green strength to be handled without difficulty. Several sintering furnaces were employed. The most satisfactory arrangement was a vacuum furnace based on the Arsem principle which employed a graphite helix as the resistance heating element. Specimens were placed on graphite stands and there was generally a slight carburization or decarburiza-tion of the specimen surface, depending on the carbon content of the alloy. The evaporation of the cobalt at a sintering temperature of 1400°C was not significant, but became severe at 1500°C and higher. The sintering time was 1 hr at 2000°C and 2 to 4 hr at lower temperatures. It was not possible to quench the specimens, but the cooling rates were rather fast, greater than 300°C in the first minute. In the system under investigation, the reactions are sluggish, and it is believed that the high temperature structures are satisfactorily retained. The principal method of investigating the sintered specimens was X-ray diffraction by the Norelco recording spectrometer. Approximate determinations of the phase boundaries were made by the disappearing phase method. Ternary Phases To study the phase formation in W-Co-C system, a series of specimens was sintered at 1400°C. In this experiment two ternary phases, called here ? and k were formed in addition to the well-known 7 phase. The 7 phase, which has been completely described by Westgren: showed a range of homogeneity from 7 to 20 pct C and from 38 to 48 pct Co. At 1400°C the 7 phase was found to be in equilibrium with monotungsten carbide, 8, tungsten, 8, #?, and liquid. The boundaries toward #? and liquid were difficult to determine and appeared to be very temperature sensitive. The other boundaries are believed to be well fixed. Tendon support systems have been successfully used to stabilize excavations. Tendon support systems are routinely designed using the axial load-bearing capacity of tendons, namely the tensile strength. To attain tensile strength the tendon must be loaded along its length, which often does not occur in practice. Tendons should optimally be installed at 90° to the surface of the excavation to achieve maximum penetration depth, yet this is often not physically or practically possible, and installations at angles less than 90° occur. Furthermore, the intersection of geological features within the rock mass frequently results in complex loading situations on tendons. The position and angle at which loading occurs results in different combinations of tensile and shear forces acting on the tendon, which can impact on the support performance of each unit and ultimately the whole system. All factors that influence the support system should be understood and taken into account to ensure a sound support design. Combination loading situations are further investigated and tested to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and the effects on tendon load-bearing capacity. Tendon support units were tested at different installation angles to establish the tendon performance, mechanical behaviour, and load capacity during these loading situations. The results and outcomes are aimed at providing rock engineers with additional data and improved understanding of how tendons could perform under certain conditions.

The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

Objective The Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) introduced in late 1997 has been modified to improve durability and simplify the measurement of roof or rib movement. Greater knowledge about the stability of roof and rib rock is expected to result in safer conditions for the mine worker. Developing safety tools and methods is part of NIOSH’s mission to prevent work-related injuries and deaths. A mining operation with a proactive approach to control ground conditions is in a better position to make essential decisions related to mine development and take remedial actions in the event of roof or rib falls. Background Falls of roof and rib rock are responsible for a high number of mining injuries and fatalities. Visual inspections and the sound of breaking or cracking rock are often relied upon to indicate unstable roof conditions. In some mines, roof bolt holes are checked for separations or gaps with a scratch tool; this provides further information about the stability of the roof. Monitors such as the RMSS can confirm roof movement that was surmised only by eye or ear, or potentially detect movement that was missed by these means. An added safety feature of the RMSS is the capability of locating the measurement station at a distance from where the monitor is placed in the roof. Stone and other industrial minerals are the basic raw materials used in construction. Continuing economic growth and highway building in particular have resulted in record demand for stone. This high demand, coupled with increasing constraints on surface mining, have caused many new .stone mines to be developed underground. These new mines in many cases will be employing new and inexperienced miners who may not have the ability to recognize unstable ground conditions using just sight and sound. From the initial introduction of the RMSS, it was anticipated that improvements and modifications would occur. We correctly assumed that, once miners and operators were exposed to the monitor. suggestions would evolve. In one case, the RMSS was used to determine if an impact hammer used on a mechanical scaler was causing or increasing instability of roof rock. The test showed little or no movement resulted from this method of scaling under the particular conditions at this mine. In another instance, an operator needed to monitor the stability of a haulageway in a benched area that had very high ceilings. The RMSS requires a 2-in-diam hole for installation; however, only roof bolt holes of a smaller diameter were available, and it was impossible to drill new holes at that height. The operator attached a 2-in collar at the roof line and was able to install the RMSS. These examples illustrate the potential for further enhancements of this tool. NIOSH continues to seek additional candidate sites for use of the RMSS. As usage increases, we anticipate further refinements and additional applications. How It Works The new RMSS, cable, and read-out box are shown in figure l. The read-out box has a green light that stays lit until battery replacement is needed. The red light is set to conic on to indicate movement. The red light can he adjusted for increments of movement as low as .010 inches. The RMSS red light should not be considered as a primary or only means of determining the stability of roof or rib. It is intended to serve as a supplement to existing methods or procedures for determining stability. An overview of the RMSS components is shown in figure 2. Movement of rock layers within the mine roof is measured relative to a fixed-point calibration at the monitor housing. The housing contains a potentiometer, roller switch, plastic rack, and spur gear. Movements are detected by the transfer of electromotive forces

The Thompson Mill has a capacity of 15,000 T ID of ore and produces two grades of nickel concentrate, copper concentrate and occasionally graphite concentrate. Up to July of 1985 we processed two distinct ore types: T-1 ore, averaging 2. 8% Ni and . 2% Cu and Pipe Open Pit ore, averaging . 8% Ni associated with peridotite and serpentine. Presently our ores from T-1 mine and Thompson Open Pit are of the same type and are processed together. (Figure 1)! n October, 1982, we decided to install an Outokumpu Courier 300 on-stream analyser on an initial 6 streams. The equipment was delivered to the mill on May 2, 1983 and the first analyses were generated by June 17th. The calibrations were 35% complete by the mid-July summer shutdown and were completed in the fall. 1. 2 Analyser Slurry Feed System:The key to successful on-stream analysis is delivery of the sample streams to the analyser.Our system uses pressure-thief sampling for collection. (Figure 2) Initially we used thief samplers modelled after the Outokumpu design, with turbulence bars upstream of the collection point. These units have been replaced with simple laterals as they have worn out. Our thief samplers are mounted vertically on pump discharges and we believe sufficient turbulence exists to ensure representative sampling.

With the advent of the environmental "green" movement of the 1960s, eventually leading to Earth Day 1970, Congress responded by passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), 1970. NEPA gave impetus to a flood of federal acts and laws in the subsequent three decades. Many of those protecting man's environment, health, and well-being also affect mining. For purposes of this chapter, a current mineral law summarization lends itself to a division into two parts: viz., Part I, General Mining Law, and Part II, Enviromining Law. The word enviromining has been coined by the author and is defined and used herein as those federal and state statutes and regulations that were created to provide protection and preservation of man's environment, health, safety, and welfare, and they have particular application to and affect on mining activities. They are listed and treated under Enviromining Laws in Part II. Mining, as a basic industry to provide the essential minerals for mankind's necessities and well-being, truly reflects the mining industry's slogan, "If it can't be grown, it must be mined." Without the basic minerals and rocks won from the earth by mining and mineral processing for their valuable physical properties or chemical constituents, man would soon be forced to revert to the cave-dwelling age. Unfortunately, for man to survive in the "manner of life to which he has become accustomed," he is caught between the demands of cleaning up his deteriorating environment and a continued supply of his basic requirements and amenities for daily living supplied by mining of the earth's minerals. He must have "clean living" at the same time with "good living;" neither is expendable. A very high pricetag accompanies this essential and critical choice which must be paid by society. The United States is internationally recognized as the world leader in environmental matters. Many countries are following suit, principally the other Anglo nations. Because US law is founded and based on English law, on occasion, Anglo-American law is referred to and cited as authority in litigation anywhere in the Anglo-American world of jurisprudence. For this reason, and because mining and the industry is international in nature and operations, some British Commonwealth cases will appear in various topics. If the case is of interest to the reader, further inquiry at a law library may be made through use of the case's style and citation given. "Style" refers to the name of the litigating parties. "Citation" refers to the law publication in which the case and decision may be found, as well as the jurisdiction and court of decision. Citation of cases from the United States and British Commonwealth nations is explained under Case Citation Explanation. Uranium mineralization occurs in the footwall of the Sunshine vein from the 2900 to the 3700 level. Veinlets of uraninite associated with pyrite and jasper have been so extensively divided and recemented that units more than a few feet in length are seldom observed. The wall rock is St. Regis quartzite of the Belt series. The age of the uraninite, on the basis of isotopic analyses, is 750 * 50, which agrees with geological data suggesting that phases of the Sunshine mineralization are pre Cambrian. THE Sunshine mine in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, is well known for its silver-bearing veins but prior to the summer of 1949 had not been recognized as a possible source of uranium. At that time, during a geiger counter reconnaissance by T. E. Gillingham, R. F. Robinson, and E. E. Thurlow, high radioactivity was noted and radioactive specimens were collected from the footwall of the Sunshine vein.' The detection led to the identification of uraninite-bearing veins, since explored jointly by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Sunshine Mining Co. After the occurrence was noted, the geology of the uranium deposit was studied by the Sunshine staff, and a laboratory examination of the ores was conducted at Columbia University. Several types of laboratory work were undertaken. Differential thermal curves were made of selected siderite samples and results from many more were secured through the work of Mitcham.2 X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analyses were employed on uraninite, jasper, and siderite. Chemical analyses were made through the cooperation of the Division of Raw Materials of the Atomic Energy Commission. General Geological Features Several silver-bearing veins cut the overturned north limb of the Big Creek anticline as mapped by Shenon and McConne1,³ while the Osburn fault, a long-recognized regional feature about a mile away, marks the north boundary of the Silver Belt. The Sunshine vein, Fig. 1, has a south dip more or less parallel to the 60" axial plane of the fold and cuts rocks of the Belt. Series, starting with the Wallace formation near the surface, continuing downward through the St. Regis formation, and probably extending into the Revett quartzite which lies below the bottom or 3700-ft level. The limb of the anticline is locally modified by secondary folds, one being prominently exposed in the uranian area along the Jewel1 crosscut near the Sunshine vein. Crumpling of the limb resulted from compression which formed the anticline and probably preceded the faults in which the vein deposits accumulated. Evidence of drag along these faults points to reverse movement in the uranium-bearing area and elsewhere. This is true of major faults in the mine workings, and the majority of faults which can be mapped, as pointed out by Robinson.' The St. Regis formation, as measured in the mine, appears to have an initial thickness of some 2000 ft, but the apparent thickness due to thickening during folding is some 3400 ft. Along the Sunshine vein the purple and green rocks characteristic of the Wallace formation in the nearby Military Gulch section p. 37 of ref. 5) have been completely bleached because of introduced sericite. Hydrothermal solutions acting on the wall rock have substituted for the original color a pale greenish cast, although no pronounced mineralogical change has resulted, as Mitcham has observed.' The silver and the uranium depositions appear to belong to distinct epochs resulting from several periods of emplacement. Likewise, multiple periods of deformation account for the faulting. Uraninite is generally associated with silicification, while silver . mineralization accompanies carbonate veins. Rarely, uraninite may be found in a matrix of siderite. Ordinarily uraninite formed prior to ar-gentian tetrahedrite. Where clusters of veins form a stockwork, uraninite-jasper veins often favor one trend while tetrahedrite-siderite veins favor another. During deformation, brecciation of the St. Regis quartzite provided openings between broken rock fragments for precipitation from vein-forming solutions. Fractures due to major breaks were filled during the first stages of vein formation, while later deformation displaced the first veins and provided new channels along which further mineralizing solutions proceeded. The uraninite veins, as the first formed, have suffered fracturing, displacement, and segmentation. Uranian vein segments uncut by faults and more than a few feet in length are rare or nonexistent. Siderite veins are more massive and often extend without a break for tens and even hundreds of feet. In general they show much less segmentation. While the siderite is usually later, there is an overlap in the periods of deposition, some earlier siderite veins being extensively segmented in much the same way uraninite veins have been broken. Vein silica is more extensively distributed than the uranium and iron mineralization it carries. Along the vein course concentrations of uraninite frequently fade away and barren white quartz continues, the transition often occurring within a few feet along strike or down dip. The decreasing availability of land in urban areas, and the increasing demand for urban development is leading to the construction of taller and heavier buildings at increasingly marginal sites. Such structures usually require founding at depth and modern construction methods are making the economics of piled foundations ever more attractive (Salgado, 1995). However, the urban environment is not suited to pile driving. Conventional dynamic installation techniques (i.e. drop hammer or vibro-piling) induce vibrations and settlement in a zone close to the pile, and cause noise and dust pollution. Damage to existing structures resulting from pile driving vibrations is not uncommon (Tomlinson, 1986).

The low potential hydrophobic state of pyrite in amyl xanthate (PAX) flotation with nitrogen is of particular interest with regard to the N2TEC flotation technology currently being used for the recovery of auriferous pyrite at NewmontÆs Lone Tree Plant in Nevada. Initially, the N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments, and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Experimental results show the importance of the pyrite surface state and the rather interesting features of the activation process.

For all the attention given to mining activities in Central and South America, Mexico, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, it is sometimes easy to forget the activities taking place in one of North America's most important and largely untapped regions -Alaska. The Alaskan minerals industry employed about 3,406 people during 1995. That is a 23% increase from - - 1994. It also contributed about $719.8 million to the state's economy during 1995, a 10% increase. During the past few years, Alaska has seen significant increases in exploration and mining activity. Fairbanks Mining, an arm of Cyprus Amax, began producing gold during 1996 at its Fort Knox Mine, as did Nevada Goldfields' Nixon Fork gold mine. Kennecott's Greens Creek lead-silver-gold mine also reopened and USMX began operations at its Illinois Creek gold mine. In addition, several impressive exploration projects were under way in Alaska. Placer Dome reported good results at Donlin Creek project in southwest Alaska. Likewise, Newmont Exploration is getting serious about its True North gold project. And Nerox is nearing production at its Jonesville coal project in Alaska's interior. In November, about 400 miners gathered in Anchor- age for the Alaska Miners Convention. Throughout the conference and exhibition, attendees listened to updates on these precious- and base-metal and coal exploration and mining operations. They also learned that the state wants more miners to head north and help develop its natural resources. Alaska is ripe for a smelter The mining industry -Alaska's miners in particular - has a powerful ally in Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-AK). He is the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. During his luncheon address, Murkowski said it appears that it is economically feasible to extend the Alaska Railroad to northwest Alaska, taking advantage of the large coal and hard-rock mineral tracts in the Ambler mining district. He also renewed his push for building a major smelter in Alaska to process ore that would come from the Ambler mining district. Murkowski believes that Alaska's economy can be expanded by extending the railroad from Nenana to the Point Lay coal fields to open coal development. Along the way, the railroad would pass through the Ambler district, helping to develop the hard-rock deposits. An outgrowth of this additional mineral development, Murkowski said, could be a new smelter in Alaska. It could use power from the Tyee hydroelectric facility near Wrangell or from the Makushin geothermal project near Unalaska. Either site, he added, offers access to plentiful, relatively low-cost power, at tidewater to facilitate ore deliveries to the Pacific Rim. The Congressional Research Service has determined that there are enough mineral deposits and coal beds to make it possible to finance the extended railroad, he said. The 1,200-km (744- mile) rail extension would cost about $4.2 billion. The North Slope of Alaska contains up to 3.6 Tt (4 trillion st) of coal, Murkowski said, that contains less than 0.25% of sulfur and less than 4% moisture. It aver- ages 12,300 Btu in heat content. "That is a tremendous resource," he said. The Ambler mining district, meanwhile, has at least eight identifiable hard-rock deposits, Murkowski continued. These contain zinc, lead, copper, nickel, chromium, tin, barite, gold and silver. "All eight of these can generate ore concentrates at rates similar to Red Dog's cur- rent 725 ktla (800,000 stpy)" of zinc, he said.

A number of novel solutions have been proposed in recent years as alternatives to props and tie-backs in deep excavation support e.g. Adekunte (2008), Deschamps et. al. (2008), Adekunte et al. (2010) and Adekunte (2014). A number of these non-standard restraining solutions involve the construction of permanent or temporary vertical or raking buttress piles that are rigidly connected to the excavation support wall at regular intervals along the wall run. This paper chiefly focuses on the design and construction of twin-vertical buttress piles as restraining systems behind or in front of embedded retaining walls. The system essentially relies on the push-pull mechanism that develops between the twin piles, to maintain the overall stability of the excavation support. The paper’s main areas of concentration include; finite element modelling, geostructural design, construction procedure, instrumentation and monitoring that are associated with the application of twin- buttress pile systems. These are supported with project details of three recently completed high-end luxurious residential developments in Greater London, England, on which the twin-buttress pile system was used to restrain the excavation support walls for the basements on the sites. The mode of application of the system varies across the three sites. While the system was adopted as a long term solution behind the retaining wall on one of the sites, it was designed and constructed for temporary use in front of the retaining walls on the other two sites. Instrumentation and monitoring results from all the sites show the non-traditional system to be safe and effective, whilst having significant beneficial effects on construction programme, sequence of works and project cost.

The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

A seismic risk assessment method has been developed for application to rockburst prone deep-level mining sites which have sufficient seismic coverage. The technique utilises several seismic hazard parameters simultaneously and assesses the seismic risk on a daily basis according to the individual levels of these parameters. Critical levels are determined from investigation of the long-term behaviour of the parameters in relation to recorded potentially damaging seismic events. The method has been applied to a data set comprising 15 months' worth of seismic data, with encouraging results

South African platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam, are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the orebodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3dependingupon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40?42% Cr2O3. However, it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.

Investigations were conducted by the lndiana Geological Survey for some dry methods of bene-ficiating low-grade gypsum ore. Seventy-two batch and continuous flow tests were performed with a roller mill, rod mill, pebble mill, electronic color sorter, electrostatic separator, and an air separator. Approximately 650 size analyses and 550 chemical analyses were performed during the investigation. Batch samples were tested by the Survey, and most of the continuous flow tests were handled by com-mercial laboratories. INTRODUCTION Although many companies producing gypsum have been interested in dry beneficiation, very little information has been published in the past. One of the most comprehensive investigations was reported by the Canadian Department of Mines.5 Other reports of interest have been published by the Canadian Department of Mines,' the South Australian Department of Mines,2 and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.3 Some beneficiating practices, such as hand picking, selective mining, crushing and screening, milling, and air classifying, were already in use in the Canadian industry prior to MacPherson's investigations.5 MacPherson examined the effect of tabling, air separation, screening, flotation, electrostatic separation, calcining, washing, and various types of milling, in his efforts to eliminate dolomite, limestone, and small amounts of silica and clay from the gypsum ore. RAW MATERIAL Gypsum and anhydrite occur within the lower part of the St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian) in southwestern Indiana. Gypsum in single beds 10 or more ft thick occur at Shoals, Martin County; near Freedom, Owen County; near Bloomfield, Greene County; and in the Devonian strata of LaPorte County. Only the Shoals deposit has been exploited commercially. The western edge of the Shoals deposit is contaminated by a continuous bed of shale, about 1 1/2 to 2 ft thick, near the top of the evaporite and by thin continuous strata or irregular masses of carbonate rock. The low-grade material used in these investigations was obtained from the waste pile of the National Gypsum Co.'s plant at Shoals. The waste ore averaged about 67.4% gypsum and was contaminated by various amounts of shale, dolomite, and limestone. All the material had been previously crushed and screened to minus 1 1/4 to plus 3/8 in. X-ray analyses of powdered, sedimentated, gly-colated, and heat-treated samples of the shale showed that it was composed of slightly structurally disordered illite, Fe-rich chlorite, and very finegrained disseminated silt. The clays and silt were partly cemented with carbonate material. Light-gray argillaceous limestone and gray or brown porous dolomite made up most of the carbonate rock contamination. Crushing Characteristics: The rate unweathered gypsum, carbonate rock, and shale reduce in size was determined by crushing handpicked samples in a rod mill and screening at minus 100 mesh (.0059 in.). Fig. 1 graphically represents the data. These data indicate that carbonate rock should be relatively easy to separate from gypsum, but that shale should be difficult to separate from gypsum by differential crushing. Controlled Samples: Eight rod mill tests of hand-picked samples of mixed gypsum and shale and mixed gypsum and carbonate rock were made. Sample weight and crushing weight were standardized, but the scalping screen size was varied from 3 to 10 mesh (.265 to .0787 in.) in order to obtain the optimum purity and recovery. The data obtained from the tests (see Table I) illustrate that the relatively hard carbonate rock allows appreciable beneficiation (13.6 to 18%), but the low strength gypsum and shale allows only minimal separation (3.1 to 7.5%).* Semi control led Samples: During the investigation considerable slaking of the shale was noted when the ore was subjected to alternate wetting and drying. As demonstrated in laboratory tests, as much as 76% shale can be removed by two cycles of wetting and drying in a 48-hour period with subsequent screening at .265 in. Five ore samples, stockpiled and weathered, were screened, rod-mill crushed and rescreened at .157 or .187 in. with excellent results (Table 11).

The Jabali zinc deposit, in Yemen, contains at least 9.4 Mt at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77g/t silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to conventional smelter/refineries, and it has been necessary to formulate a less conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material, at Yanbu, in Saudi Arabia. In order to give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulphide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, the flowsheet for Yanbu and presents preliminary costs for both operations

Studies made with a captive bubble apparatus on the sulfidization and collection by amyl xanthate of true chrysocolla specimens have defined the ranges of pH value and sulfide concentration which permit contact between the bubble and the mineral surface. Titanium compounds were the most effective of the materials found to activate the sulfidization of chrysocolla. With titanium activation, the contact angles and the ranges of pH value and sulfide wncentration giving bubble contact were all increased. Chrysocolla ores were concentrated by flotation. Chrysocolla ores occur at many localities in grade and quantity sufficient to make mining and millin feasible, but no satisfactory method of concentratio has been found. Although chrysocolla may be leached with acid, only those ores without acid-consuming gangue may be leached economically. Because of its potential importance, a study of the conditions nece sary for flotation of chrysocolla has been carried ou The literature contains a few references to flotation of chrysocolla. Two methods were developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.1,2 The first consisted of a fatty acid soap and a high xanthate as collectors of chrysocolla from a synthetic ore, while the second involved the use of hydrogen sulfide and xanthate. Ludt and DeWitt3 demonstrated the difference in adsorptive powers of chrysocolla and quartz for bas triphenyl methane dyes and suggested the use of butyl, hexyl or octyl-substituted malachite green as collector. Jackel4 emphasized the effects of combin tions of reagents such as Aerofloat 31, pine oil, and Reagents 404 and 425 with sodium sulfide and zinc hydrosulfite as conditioning agents. Although he reported recoveries of 89% from a synthetic ore and 98% from a natural ore containing azurite, malachite, chalcopyrite and chrysocolla, careful application of Jackel's method to chrysocolla from Tyrone, N.M., failed to give a high recovery. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE Samples from Inspiration, Ariz., and Tyrone and Magdalena, N. M., were used for experimentation and verified as true chrysocolla by leaching tests, specific gravity tests and X-ray diffraction. Chrysocolla does not dissolve at pH 4, although malachite and azurite do. Chrysocolla is about half as dense as the copper carbonates. X-ray diffraction analyses by the powder camera method confirmed the samples as true chrysocolla. A captive bubble apparatus, which cast an enlarged image of the air bubble and the mineral surface upon a screen, was used to check on the character of the surfaces. The specimens were prepared by grinding a flat surface on a glass plate using fine abrasive; then they were washed and kept in distilled water until they were to be treated with reagents. Before each reagent treatment, the specimen was carefully checked for cleanliness in the captive bubble apparatus. It was assumed that the surface was clean if, after fine grinding and washing of the specimen, the bubble would not stick. Specimens were handled with glass forceps, and precautions were taken to avoid contamination of the mineral surfaces. Contact angle measurements were carefully made several times on each treated specimen to obtain reliable average values. EFFECT OF pH VALUE AND SODIUM SULFIDE CONCENTRATION In each experiment, a specimen with a freshly ground surface was immersed for 10 min in a solution of sodium sulfide, washed and immersed for 15 min in a solution containing 30 mg per 1 of potassium amyl xanthate. The specimen was then washed again in distilled water and tested for contact angle in the captive bubble apparatus while submerged in distilled water. In this series of experiments, the pH of the sulfidizing solution was varied from 3 to 7, and the concentration of sodium sulfide, containing 60% Na2S, was varied from 50 to 650 mg per 1. Many combinations of pH value and sulfide concentration resulted in no contact between the bubble and the surface, but over a limited range of conditions, contact angles varying from 24ºto 52ºwere obtained. The data in Fig. 1 show sulfidization conditions that lead to bubble contact and those that do not. The region of contact is surprisingly small, which may indicate why flotation of chrysocolla involving sulfidization has proven so difficult in practice.
