Low-melting thoriurnrbase binary alloys or metal solutions were prepared by two different techniques involving the electrolysis of ThO2 dissolved in fluoride melts. Experiments were performed at 950° to 1,250° C using electrolytes containing ThF4 and various alkali and alkaline earth fluorides. In the first method, electroreduction of ThO2 and deposition of thorium on a nickel or iron cathode formed a molten alloy that dripped off and collected on the bottom of the cell, or in a tungsten cup. An electrocodeposition technique was used to prepare thorium-base alloys or solutions containing nickel, iron, chromium, or manganese. Electrolytic reduction of the component metal oxides and simultaneous deposition of the two metals on a tungsten cathode yielded a liquid alloy product. Complementary experiments were performed on the fused fluoride electrowinning of dendritic thorium from Th02 at 1,075° to 1,200° C in which thorium crystals were recovered and arc-melted into buttons. Major contaminants were aluminum, carbon, copper, iron, oxygen, and silicon, totaling 0.2 percent.

The study re-examines respirable coal mine dust samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It finds that SEM tends to overpredict the abundance of dust from rock strata and underpredict coal content, possibly due to coal-mineral microagglomerates (MAGs). The findings suggest that MAGs could be valuable in improving dust controls in mines.

To help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national, economic, and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of extracting copper from coarse native copper ore with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solution by a simulated in situ leaching procedure. A 5.9-metric-ton (6.5-ton) sample of minus 30.5-centimeter (12-inch) conglomerate-type ore analyzing 1.96 percent copper was leached in a column for 556 days with a solu-tion that contained, in grams per liter, 2.2 NBs and 1.9 CO[3=]. The copper extraction was 71.4 percent, and reagent consumptions were, in kilograms per metric ton of ore, 1.1 NBs and 0.85 CO[3=] (in pounds per ton of ore, 2.2 NH3 and 1.7 CO[3=]). The pregnant leach solutions contained about 1.4 grams per liter copper, which was readily extracted from these low-tenor liquors with a 1:19 mixture of an organic extractant and kerosine. Copper was stripped from the loaded organic with depleted electrolyte containing 150 grams per liter H2S04, and the copper was recovered by electrowinning with antimonial lead anodes. Conditions also were established for minimal lead transfer to the cathode copper.

A long-term production schedule for the LabMag iron ore deposit in northern Quebec, Canada is derived using stochastic integer programming. The optimisation formulation maximises the schedule’s net present value while simultaneously managing the risk of deviations in production tonnages and qualities by considering stochastic simulations of the orebody instead of a single deterministic model. The formulation also smooths and minimises haul truck requirements and ensures that as mining progresses, space is created within the mined out pit for the return of waste material.CITATION:Spleit, M, 2014. THE petroleum engineers have the conference habit. They drop in, thresh things over, and drop out. No time is wasted. So it was at the Fort Worth meeting of the Petroleum Division, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8 and 9; headquarters, Blackstone Hotel. Associate Chairman Albertson arrived the morning of the 7th, to tie in any loose ends of the technical program. S. M. Greenidge, chairman of the local committee, checked the arrangements with his committeemen at a luncheon that noon. By mid-afternoon the next day's attendance was anybody's guess-there were no noses to count. But when the gavel sounded Thursday morning 175 members and guests were present, also the official A.I.M.E. party consisting of President Lovejoy, Secretary Parsons, and George Otis Smith. Shortly after adjournment Friday afternoon all but a handful had vamoosed, lit out, disap¬peared. But, in the meantime, it was a grand conference, attendance maximum every session, and the discussion fast and furious. The discussion came from all over the floor, sometimes as good-natured sniping, sometimes in long volleys that were almost fatal to the reporter. Everyone knew his subject and few there were who had nothing to say.

"Considerations are presented for developing and implementing self-hardening slurry mix designs to be utilized in barrier seepage walls. Slag-cement-cement-bentonite (SCCB) slurries are the primary focus, with some comparisons referenced to the more traditional Portland-based cement-bentonite (CB) slurries. Field and laboratory mixing methods are reviewed, including 1) single sack – single mixer method; 2) bentonite slurry mixer – cementitious addition mixer method; 3) bentonite mixer – grout mixer – CB blending mixer method. Major phenomena associated with the dynamics of barrier wall excavation, such as loss of water from the in-trench slurry and consolidation of in-trench slurry are discussed. Other topics touched upon include sand content effects, fluidizers utilized, and chemical contaminants. The role of higher bentonite to water ratio is reviewed, with demonstration of improvement of filtration properties, and an increase of water retention of the final consolidated product.IntroductionSelf-hardening slurry has been utilized to construct barrier seepage walls for many decades. This is essentially a single-step slurry excavation and backfill process whereby the trench-supporting fluid gains strength over a short period during installation and maintains or develops low hydraulic conductivity. The resulting curing slurry becomes the actual barrier wall as the resultant cement-augmented clay slurry now fulfills the dual purpose of both temporary trench stabilization and final cured-in-place product. This eliminates the requirement and expense of subsequent backfill/slurry displacement operations required in traditional barrier wall installations.Self-hardening slurries have been fabricated using a number of various clays, most commonly sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite, attapulgite, and sepiolite. Perhaps due to plentiful high quality sodium bentonite deposits found domestically, the proven excavation stabilization properties imparted from sodium bentonite slurries, sodium bentonites are typically specified for formulating self-hardening slurries in the US. Cementitious materials utilized most commonly are Portland cement and slag (ground blast furnace slag or GBFS). For the purposes of this discussion, self-hardening slurry having a cementitious of Portland will be referred to as CB. Those having cementitious material of GBFS replacing Portland (partially or wholly) will be referred to as SCCB."

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

A developed Structural Block Model and Strength-Grade factor have been combined in a Rock Factor, that, exclusively obtained from drilling data, can provide an automatic assessment of rock structure, strength, and waste/ore identification.

"During the industrial electrowinning of zinc, uneven growth can cause short-circuits and make the deposits more sensitive to the presence of impurities that can significantly impact current efficiency. To produce levelled zinc deposits, additives such as glue, licorice and sodium silicate are often added to the electrolyte. Even in the presence of additives, uneven zinc growth still takes place because of the combination of hydrodynamic and electrolysis conditions in the cell house. Recent advancements in imaging spectroscopy and scaling analysis have opened an avenue to further study the effects of additives on zinc growth morphology. In this study, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and scaling analysis have been used to monitor zinc growth characteristics including roughness, periodicity, aspect ratios and growth mechanisms as a function of electrolyte composition as well as deposition time. Zinc was electrodeposited from an industrial electrolyte containing a host of additives onto an aluminum cathode with a platinum wire serving as the anode. AFM images of the samples were collected to obtain 3D topographical information on which scaling analysis was performed to extract details on root-mean-squared (rms) roughness, periodicity (grain size), aspect ratio of surface features and growth mechanism. This analysis provided information on the mechanism by which the previously mentioned variables can impact short term growth and also provided a prediction of expected growth at long deposition times.INTRODUCTIONElectrowinning is one of the final stages in the industrial production of zinc metal. It is during this process where dissolved zinc ions undergo electro-reduction from an acidic electrolyte onto an aluminum cathode and are later recovered by stripping the zinc metal from the substrate. However, due to the nature of zinc growth as well as the various operating conditions, zinc deposition may occur unevenly, sometimes causing short-circuits that can cause electrode damage and reduced zinc production."

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. THE Nichols Copper Co., associated with the Phelps Dodge Corp. and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., has constructed at El Paso, Tex., and is now operating a copper refinery with a yearly capacity of 100,000 tons of anodes. Transportation facilities were perhaps the most important of the considerations that led to the selection of this site. The rapid industrial development of the Middle and Far West has increased the consumption of copper there. The advantage of local refining as against shipping the copper to the Atlantic sea- board is apparent. Copper refined in the Southwest is equally competitive for export shipment, either from the Gulf or the Pacific Coast ports. The tonnage of copper produced in the Southwest not only justifies the construction of this plant, but may warrant considerable expansion in years to come.

The conventional Canadian oil sand processing, the Clark Rowe process, is associated with many risks for the environment and high energy costs. To recover the bitumen from the oil sand (tar sand), large quantities of water have to be heated up and mixed with caustic soda and the oil sand. During this process, tailings with stabilized clay colloids are formed and dumped in tailings ponds. To avoid these disadvantages, a new, non-aqueous extraction process is to be established. Organic solvents are used instead of water and caustic soda to mobilize the bitumen from the sand-clay mixture. Pressure filtration, washing and steam pressure filtration are part of the new concept. A mixture of organic solvents and the oil sand is first pressure filtrated in a nutsch filter until a saturation level of one is obtained. After the cake has been formed, the filter cake is washed with organic solvent to flush the bitumen loaded solvent out of the cake. The following steam pressure filtration mechanically and thermally removes the remaining volatile components of the solvents from the filter cake. The filtrates from the pressure filtration, the washing phase and partly from steam pressure filtration are subsequently thermally treated to recover the organic solvents and obtain a higher bitumen concentration in the mixture. This mixture is then lead to an upgrader to win synthetic crude oil (SCO). The recovery of bitumen in the conventional hot water extraction process based on the Clark Rowe process can, in highly optimized plants, achieve between 88 and 92 %. Variation of oil sand properties leads to an actual range of between 80 and 90 % of bitumen recovery. With the alternative process based on organic solvents, the bitumen recovery exceeds the recovery of the conventional process by up to 16 percentage points. The composition of the two organic solvents in the first step of forming a suspension with the oil sand is important. The aromatic component is crucial for liberating and solving the asphaltenes, which tend to flocculate. The order of the two components of organic solvents is also important in the washing step. The paraffinic component is essential to achieve successful steam pressure filtration with respect to fast steam breakthrough and a filter cake free from organic compounds, as a result of its lower boiling point. The Mary Kathleen tailings storage facility (TSF) contains 7.1 Mt of uranium mill tailings. This waste repository was rehabilitated in the mid-1980s using a multibarrier dry cover. At the time of mine closure, it was predicted that acid mine drainage (AMD) generation would not eventuate and that uranium, heavy metals and radionuclides would be adsorbed within the tailings and not seep from the TSF into the environment. This study reports on the environmental status of the TSF. Gamma-ray measurements indicate an intact dry cover of the waste repository. However, seepage (~0.5 L s-1) of acid (pH 5.71), saline (0.31 per cent), high conductivity (8.8 mS cm-1), slightly oxygenated (DO 2.6 mg L-1), radioactive waters occurs from the toe of the tailings dam into the former evaporation ponds and local drainage system. Seepage waters are calcium-magnesium-sulfate rich with elevated Fe, Mn, Ni, U and Zn values. Oxygenation of tailings seepages causes the precipitation of Fe and coprecipitation and adsorption of other metals (Pb, U, Y), metalloids (As), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238, Th-227). In contrast, Ba, Ni, Sr, Mn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Na and K as well as Ra nuclides (Ra-226 and Ra-228) remain in solution until pH neutralisation and evaporation lead to their precipitation in efflorescences and sulfate-rich evaporative sediments further downstream. Dry capping of Mary Kathleen uranium mill tailings has resulted in physical containment of the wastes. The dry cover shows no signs of erosion and radiation levels are within acceptable limits. However, the flow rate of surface seepage from the TSF occurs at a much higher rate than predicted. Also, the neutralising potential and adsorption capacity of the tailings and underlying aquifer were overestimated at the time of mine closure. AMD has developed mobilising metals, metalloids, rare earth elements, alkalis, radionuclides and sulfate from the waste repository into surface water seepages.

"Distinction between Tripoli and Diatomaceous EarthMuch confusion exists both in the literature and in the trade as to the proper use of the terms tripoli, tripolite diatomeceons or infusoriai earth, and kieseigunr. All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

The Yarnell gold depoSit, located in the Weaver mining district of Yavapai County, Arizona is found within a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone that occurs within a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rock that occur around and above the low-angle northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization; a wider envelope of weakly-propylitic alterred rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz ± adularia veining, stockwork formation, and localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized), and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit although the thickness of the zone and associated alteration envelope diminish away from the orebody. A sample of undeformed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 ± 1.6 Ma; this date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As, Cu, and Mo content. Both CO2-and H20-rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit.

The following paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, and deals with the sinking of the Pim shaft (No. 7) of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri lead belt. The shaft was sunk in 1922 and 1923 on a tract several miles south of the company's main plant located at St. Francois, Mo., in St. Francois County. The author is indebted to W. H. Comins, local manager of the company, with whose permission this article has been written, for his helpful criticism; and to E. T. Campbell, geologist, and M. Some attempts were made to recover and remove of uranium that may be present in refining effluents, mine waste Water, and other waste sources by using microbial biomass. To establish which microorganisms accumulate the most uranium, 135 species of microorganisms (42 bacteria, 26 yeasts, 34 fungi and 33 actinomycetes) were screened. Of these 135 species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stuzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomvces viridochromogenes. In addition to the research on uranium uptake, thorium recovery by using microorganisms was investigated. High abilities were found in Streptomyces levoris and Bacillus subtilis. The selective accumulation of heavy metal ions by various microorganisms has also been examined. Uranyl, mercury and lead ions were readily accumulated by almost all of the species of microorganisms tested. Actinomycetes and fungi differ from many bacteria and most yeasts in their selective accumulation of uranium, and mercury. The basic features of uranium uptake by Streptomyces viridochromogenes, a microorganisms with high uranium-uptake ability, were investigated systematically. Synthesizing these results, we suggested that the accumulation of uranium into these microbial cells is not directly mediated by any metabolic process:, but almost completely dependent upon physicochemical adsorption on the cell components. In addition to this fundamental research, uranium recovery was investigated in immobilized Streptomyces viridochromogenes. These immobilized cells adsorbed, uranium readily and selectively. The immobilized cells recovered uranium almost quantitatively and almost all uranium adsorbed was desorbed with 0.1 N Na2CO3, These results showed that microbial cells are more stable after Immobilization and can be used repeatedly for the process of uranium adsorption-desorption. These results suggested that these microbial cells can be used for the recovery and removal of nuclear fuel elements, such as uranium and thorium, from refining effluents and mine waste water.

This one day field trip is sponsored by the Denver Region Exploration Geologists? Society, May 14th 2009. The trip highlights major geologic features and some notable uranium occurrences along the north-south mountain-basin boundary southwest of Denver and continuing north to Fort Collins, Colorado. Uranium deposits visited include sandstone?hosted roll front type and polymetallic veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. A replacement ?episyenite? type occurrence is considered via description and hand samples but is not visited owing to logistical constraints. Recovery methods addressed include underground mining and in-situ leach recovery. Samples of Precambrian basement rocks, deposit host rocks, uranium ore samples, and ore polished sections viewed by reflected light microscopy will be available. A road map showing the locations of the stops serves as the front cover of this field guide. The Robinson episyenite-hosted occurrence (not visited) is labeled as Stop 6. A stratigraphic column is provided which shows the position of the host rocks at each stop (Figure 1-1).

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

"The adsorption of collector on bornite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on bornite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. This adsorption mechanism is very similar to the one obtained with chalcocite/xanthate system. However, the result also clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on bornite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. The obtained AFM images also showed that the adsorption increases with increasing the collector’s concentration. When Cytec Aerofloat 238, a dialkyl dithiophosphate collector, is used, it adsorb on bornite mainly in the form of an oily substance, which can be rinsed off mineral surface by flushing with ethanol alcohol. AFM images also show that the adsorption of Cytec Aerofloat 238 increases with increasing the adsorption time. INTRODUCTION The adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) Compared to other copper minerals such as chalcopyrite and chalcocite, much less work has been done to study the adsorption collector on bornite. Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of bornite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on bornite was cuprous alkyl xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Buckley et al. (1984) investigated the surface oxidation of bornite by linear potential sweep voltammetry and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and proposed the adsorption products on bornite depended on the solution potential. Zachwieja et al. (1987) studied the electrochemical flotation of the bornite-ethylxanthate system and reported that KEX reacted with bornite through an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -0.4 and -0.2v (SCE). Hangone et al. (2005) studied the flotation of a bornite-rich copper sulfide ore using thio collectors and their mixtures and reported that the highest copper recoveries were obtained with the diethyl dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP)."
