"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. An alternative parameter, the organic efficiency, does indirectly consider process economics, but it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach, the partition moment of inertia, is introduced. This parameter reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure that promises better use of performance data. IntroductionPartition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, density separators and other beneficiation technologies that are based on intensive physical properties. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of the physical property on which the separation is based, such as particle density, size or magnetic susceptibility. Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic S shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout, or bypass, values; the midpoint slope; and the separation cut point, defined as the property value with 50 percent recovery.Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, as a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point, that is, an infinitely large slope. One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable, Ep, is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25 and 75 percent recovery points:"

This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

This circular presents part I of a review of the literature on effects of breathing dusts, with special reference to silicosis, largely in the minim; and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject. Parts II and III will deal with prevention and treatment of dust diseases and some of the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry, with special reference to mining. Dust diseases arc much before the public at present, and there is good reason to believe that the information on the subject available to the layman is extremely meager; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of the diseases, their causation, remedies, and prevention, rather than actual experience with them. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable, and in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to bring the subject before the public with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive.

O aumento na qualidade do produto, a relação custo-benefício e dentre outras melhorias que a robótica trouxe a uma linha de produção industrial, justificam a procura por parte das grandes empresas em procurar investir na inserção desta tecnologia ou no melhoramento dela em sua cadeia produtiva. Este trabalho teve como principal objetivo demonstrar a aplicação da tecnologia robótica na indústria, em proporções reduzidas e fins didáticos, com a integração de um sistema de controle e automação representado pela plataforma Arduino que atua no controle de coordenadas de um braço robótico em atividades de carregamento e paletização de cargas.

Em função das condições desejadas no processamento do aço no Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA), a escória final tem teor elevado de FeO, contém fósforo e pode ter, ainda, alto teor de alumina. Para controlar o consumo de desoxidantes, formar uma escória adequada no forno panela (FP) e evitar a reversão de fósforo, é importante minimizar a passagem da escória do FEA para a panela, no vazamento. Assim, é essencial conhecer a quantidade de escória passante para o controle e previsão adequados do processamento no FP. Neste trabalho é apresentada uma metodologia para, através de um balanço de massa levando em conta medidas de composição realizadas durante o processo, determinar a quantidade de escória passante e o volume de escória no final do processamento no FP. É empregado um método numérico simples e demonstra-se que os resultados obtidos são suficientemente adequados para melhor conhecimento e controle do processo por parte do engenheiro responsável, possibilitando gerar informações precisas para cálculos de correções (exemplo: formulação de uma nova escória sintética, correção de desgaste de refratários, ajuste de basicidade, etc.).

That he was eminent we know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly wholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable: Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son- of Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Franklin after an ancestor who was of the same family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the École Impériale des Mines at Paris, lie e Beaumont and Daubrée being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because. they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States Government. "INTRODUCTION Mine operators have long realized the importance of providing a satisfactory and dependable means of giving prompt warning to underground mine workers at the occurrence of a mine fire or other threatened disaster.Most underground mines of the Lake Superior district are prepared to inject a stench liquid into the compressed-air system quickly to give such warning. The liquid evaporates quickly and gives off an intense and easily recognizable odor even when present in minute quantities in the mine air. Workers in the mines studied have been fairly generally familiarized with the odor and instructed as to evacuation procedure when the warning odor is detected.In some mines provided throughout with electric lighting, including working faces, a prearranged light-flashing signal is given as a warning supplementary to that received from the stench.In a few mines, workers have been instructed to evacuate the mine immediately in the event the compressed-air supply is cut off, regardless of whether mechanical failure may be involved.Information obtained in observing a number of stench-injection tests is compiled and presented in the hope-that it will serve as an incentive to provide means of making stench injections at mines not now so equipped and for making similar tests at other underground mines, so that in case unsatisfactory results are obtained rectifying adjustments or changes may be made in time. It is further hoped that this paper will bring out the real importance of repeating these tests from time to time, at least once a year on each operating shift, so that in the event of an actual emergency, underground employees will receive a prompt warning."

Softwares desenvolvidos para análise das propriedades mecânicas em máquinas de ensaio de tração facilitam o trabalho rotineiro de caracterização dos materiais. No entanto, estes aplicativos não apresentam informações importantes como cálculos da incerteza de medição, cabendo uma análise da confiabilidade dos resultados obtidos por esses programas. O presente trabalho se propõe a comparar os valores dos limites de escoamento, de resistência, do módulo de elasticidade e da deformação final obtidos através do software Instron Bluehill® com os valores calculados através da análise minuciosa dos dados provenientes dos instrumentos de medição (célula de carga, extensômetro, sensor de deslocamento). Busca-se, assim, fornecer informações que auxiliem o trabalho de técnicos e engenheiros, além de estimar o erro percentual e desenvolver uma metodologia periódica para a garantia da confiabilidade da máquina de ensaio.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. The United States Bureau of Mines has engaged in a study of the conditions under which coal mine accidents, resulting in the loss of life, limb, or time to the injured person, occur from falls of roof and coal. This publication is devoted to the results of a study conducted in the coal mines of the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal fields of Utah. To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

Tunnel driving is recognized as one of the most hazardous of occupations; this is a reflection of the high accident severity rates and resultant high compensation and similar costs in this industry. Most tunnels are driven by contractors who bid for the jobs, taking into consideration the prevailing industrial insurance rates at the time the bids are placed. After the bid is secured the contractor then attempts to complete the job at the minimum cost to himself. In a sense the accident-cost item is fixed for at least one year when a policy is secured. Time is generally an important factor not only for the contractor, but also for the insurance carrier and the assured. If the assured represents a private interest, the cost burden usually is ultimately placed on the general public which avails itself of the service contemplated; if the project is a governmental enterprise the cost burden unquestionably falls upon the general public involved and on the general tax payer. For these reasons it is of vital interest to the public that accidents not only be kept at a minimum as a humanitarian objective, but also because the accident-cost burden, too frequently not even realized and considered to the degree that it should be, can assume proportions that materially affect the cost of the enterprise. The basic industrial insurance rate for tunneling in California in 1932 contemplated an earned premium of 12.12 percent of the labor pay roll. The State has been particularly engaged in large construction enterprises, some of which involve high accident cost rates, notably structural-steel bridge building, which contemplates an earned premium of 19.65 percent of the labor pay roll. When this figure is compared with the much lower rates that apply to other industries it is apparent that a heavy toll in human wreckage is taken by such engineering projects, which must be viewed as monuments to human suffering as veil as to human achievement.

In order for the Australian underground coal mining industry to achieve the high productivity rates demanded of it without compromising its good safety record, improved geotechnical monitoring systems are required. One of the main problem areas affecting underground coal mining is the deterioration of previously stable roadways.CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has been working on a NERDDC funded project to develop an instrument to monitor coal mine roof deformation. The instrument which has been developed, Roof Alert, is a self contained, battery powered, intrinsically safe device. It can monitor the magnitude and rate of deformation and give multiple, variable visual alarm signals where preset levels ate exceeded.

A recuperação de metais presentes em equipamentos eletroeletrônicos tem atraído interesse em virtude de novas e diferentes tecnologias que visam a reutilização desses elementos químicos em novos processos produtivos. A recuperação de metais das placas de circuito impresso tem atraído o interesse das empresas, pois, ao mesmo tempo que produz bons resultados do ponto de vista econômico, também se pratica o desenvolvimento sustentável, reduzindo a extração de metais da natureza. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar as placas de circuito impressos (PCI’s) de memória de computadores, através de imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura com espectroscopia por dispersão de energia (MEV/EDS), a fim de verificar a presença de metais, visando a sua recuperação.

O fluxo simétrico e distribuição de temperatura uniforme são de grande importância no processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Beam Blank, porém a utilização de duas válvulas para alimentação do molde traz dificuldades operacionais relacionadas ao posicionamento das válvulas e controle de vazão. Neste sentido é interessante trabalhar com apenas uma válvula. Neste trabalho técnicas de modelagem física e matemática foram utilizadas para avaliar o fluxo de fluido no molde, comparando-se o caso em que se empregam duas válvulas tubulares, com aquele em que se utiliza apenas uma válvula. Verificou-se que esta última configuração resultou em uma mudança no comportamento do fluxo, aumento na profundidade de impacto, porém a velocidade na região do menisco não teve variação significativa em comparação com a utilização de duas válvulas tubulares.

O trabalho teve por objetivo produzir uma liga Al AA1070 com microestrutura ultrafina via prensagem por canais equiangulares. O processo empregou a rota C com 2 passes consecutivos a frio e acumulou uma deformação ?2 = 2,38. O material de partida é proveniente de um processo de laminação a quente na qual a microestrutura resultante era composta de grãos grosseiros com tamanho de grão de 14,5 ± 19,1 ?m e dureza de 31,1 ± 1,9 Vickers. Foi realizada a caracterização microestrutural com o auxílio das técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e de difração de elétrons retroespalhados. O comportamento mecânico das amostras foi avaliado por ensaios de dureza Vickers, a fim de se determinar a energia armazenada durante os passes. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o material de partida apresentou estrutura parcialmente recristalizada, decorrente do processo termomecânico de laminação. A deformação cisalhante severa que ocorre na interseção entre os canais durante o processamento via ECAP permitiu um intenso refinamento de grãos. O tamanho de grão após o 2° passe foi da ordem de 1,6 ± 1,7 µm. A dureza após o 1° passe quase dobrou em relação ao material de partida, mas praticamente se manteve no passe seguinte, sugerindo uma possível estabilidade. Pode-se concluir que ocorreu um considerável refinamento do tamanho de grão em função da elevada fragmentação e rotação da subestrutura após os passes de deformação.

A produção de cânulas, materiais utilizados na fabricação de dispositivos médicos, é feita a partir de uma tira de aço inoxidável 304L laminado em tubos e posteriormente soldado por processo GTAW. Após esse procedimento, o tubo sofre uma série de passes de trefilação com recozimento e sem recozimento, para diminuir seu diämetro. Por fim, são realizadas as etapas de corte, apontamento e limpeza do material. Durante a trefilação, uma série de defeitos chamados “GOUGE” é encontrada, provocando altas perdas nos processos, em função das desconformidades com as especificações técnicas. Inicialmente, no intuito de caracterizar e detectar possíveis causas dos defeitos foram analisadas as características do processo, desde a soldagem até a trefilação sem recozimento. Em seguida, foram feitas análises com microscopia de varredura, para avaliar algumas características metalúrgicas do material. Como o objetivo era caracterizar o defeito, diversas causas possíveis surgiram, como a influência da corrente ou velocidade de soldagem, temperatura de tratamento juntamente com as reações do gás Amônia na geração das desconformidades, a velocidade de trefilação ou a quantidade de óleo lubrificante. Concluiu-se que o processo de soldagem não foi o causador da falha, bem como a trefilação sem recozimento. A possibilidade da causa da descontinuidade ficou com o processo de trefilação com recozimento. Assim, diversas propostas para trabalhos futuros surgiram.
