Frente ao cenário industrial competitivo, o emprego de fluxantes em lingotamento contínuo de aços permitiu o aumento da produtividade e a redução das perdas metálicas por defeitos superficiais. Neste estudo, avaliou-se a aplicabilidade de dois tipos de fluxantes para produção do aço SAE 1046 Mod. Os fluxantes foram testados quanto ao desgaste da válvula submersa, frenagem (atrito) na interface metal/molde e rejeição dos produtos de lingotamento devido à presença de defeitos superficiais. O fluxante teste apresentou taxa de desgaste de válvula submersa de 2,2 mm/corrida, frente ao fluxante padrão com 0,8 mm/corrida. Entretanto, o fluxante teste demonstrou bons resultados quanto à lubrificação do molde, reduzindo a frenagem (atrito) entre o metal e molde e, consequentemente, melhorando a qualidade superficial do produto de lingotamento. A rejeição dos produtos por defeitos superficiais reduziu 47% com o fluxante teste.

O tecido de poliamida aromática (poliaramida) da marca Twaron foi reforçado por uma solução de óxido de grafeno para a produção de um nanocompósito, e posteriormente submetido a tratamento térmico. A impregnação do óxido de grafeno no tecido de poliaramida visa melhorar as propriedades balísticas do material por meio do aumento do coeficiente de atrito entre as fibras do tecido. Este estudo avaliou a adesão das folhas de óxido de grafeno nos tecidos de poliaramida, utilizando a análise por espectroscopia de infravermelho por transformada de Fourier (FTIR), a análise termogravimétrica (TGA) e a microscopia eletrônica por varredura (MEV), após o tratamento térmico. Por meio da análise dos resultados, foi possível observar que a adesão do óxido de grafeno aumentou com o tratamento térmico empregado neste trabalho.

O estudo de ligas livres de Pb envolvendo o emprego de junções metálicas sob altas temperaturas tem recebido atenção especial, sendo desenvolvidas novas ligas com qualidade e desempenho adequados. Ligas Bi-Ag consistem em alternativas promissoras para a substituição das ligas de solda contendo Pb para tais aplicações, por isso devem ser melhor caracterizadas sob o aspecto de estruturas brutas de fusão. Assim, o presente trabalho objetiva investigar a liga hipoeutética Bi-1,5%Ag (%em peso) solidificada unidirecionalmente sob regime transitório de fluxo de calor. Será analisada a influência dos parâmetros térmicos de solidificação como velocidade de solidificação (VL), taxa de resfriamento (?) gradiente de temperatura (G) na microestrutura e na evolução de dureza da liga citada. Para determinação do perfil de dureza, foram realizados ensaios de dureza Vickers. Para obtenção e caracterização das microestruturas presentes no fundido Bi-1,5%Ag, fez-se o uso da microscopia ótica e da fluorescência de raios-x. Uma estrutura de dendritas facetadas de Bi circundadas pelo eutético Bi-Ag prevaleceu ao longo do lingote Bi-1,5%Ag. Verificou-se um aumento gradativo dos espaçamentos dendríticos primário (?1) e secundário (?2) à medida que a distância da base refrigerada foi aumentada. Em geral, os valores de dureza diminuíram para maiores valores de ?1 e ?2.

A espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X (FRX ou XRF) é uma das técnicas analíticas mais utilizadas em geoquímica. Na indústria mineral também se utiliza a espectrometria de absorção atômica (AA). A comparação de concentrações de sílica e alumina de oito amostras padronizadas de minério de ferro obtidas a partir das técnicas FRX e absorção atômica, constitui o objetivo deste trabalho. Foram realizadas análises dos mesmos padrões em outros dois laboratórios para reprodutibilidade dos resultados. Foram utilizados um espectrômetro FRX e um espectrômetro de absorção atômica para realização dos ensaios. As análises produziram resultados satisfatórios, com desvios médios de 0,502 para a sílica e 0,096 para a alumina.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. O processamento de aços ARBL (Alta Resistência Baixa Liga) para fabricação de bens de capital de dimensões avantajadas pode sobrecarregar máquinas operatrizes de indústrias do setor metal-mecânico. Uma rota alternativa para processamento deste material é a conformação do mesmo a temperaturas elevadas (processamento "a morno"), para redução de seu limite de escoamento e consequente diminuição do esforço nos equipamentos. Entretanto as propriedades mecânicas destes materiais devem ser mantidas após seu retorno à temperatura ambiente. Neste trabalho um aço ARBL temperado e revenido foi submetido a 1, 3, 5, 7 e 9 ciclos térmicos, com a soma do tempo de todos os ciclos térmicos igual a 10 horas e temperatura de 580°C. Em seguida ensaios mecânicos de tração, impacto em corpos de prova Charpy-V e dureza Vickers foram executados. A caracterização microestrutural e análises fratográficas dos corpos de prova de tração e impacto foram realizadas por meio de microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV). A análise microestrutural revelou o coalescimento de partículas de cementita em todas as amostras. A resistência mecânica dos corpos de prova submetidos a 1, 3, 7 e 9 ciclos caiu. A energia absorvida no ensaio de impacto aumentou para estas amostras. O corpo de prova submetido a 5 ciclos térmicos apresentou endurecimento secundário. A fratografia de todos os corpos de prova ensaiados a tração revelaram fratura dúctil. O mesmo ocorreu para os corpos de prova submetidos ao ensaio de impacto, exceto para os corpos de prova submetidos a 5 ciclos térmicos. Em nenhum dos casos ocorreu descaracterização do material com quedas nos limites de resistência a valores inferiores aos especificados pelo fabricante.

Located in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, the Block 9 Redevelopment project site contains highly- compressible soils in the upper 100 feet with groundwater about 10 to 15 feet below the existing ground surface. The owner prohibited using driven piles to avoid disturbing neighbors of the project and historically, drilled shafts are used in Fargo as a reduced noise and vibration alternative to driven piles. However, developments over the last 20 to 30 years in drilling equipment, load testing and integrity testing resulted in the project team identifying augered cast-in-place piles as a suitable alternative for this project. To reduce the risks associated with using a relatively unproven foundation system in the area, the project team used the design-build delivery method for foundation design and construction. The team also specified compression load testing and higher-than-normal integrity testing. A successful bi-directional load test validated the design parameters for the augered cast-in-place pile while thermal integrity profiling gave the team confidence that these piles would perform similarly to the test pile. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Block 9 Redevelopment project goal was to turn an existing, at-grade parking lot in downtown Fargo, North Dakota into a public outdoor plaza, a mixed-use building and a parking ramp. The project provides new offices, retail spaces, a hotel, a restaurant and private apartments. Situated in the southeast quadrant at the intersection of Broadway and 3rd Avenue North, the project site wraps around a bank building that was to remain. According to aerial photographs, the eastern portion of the site contained a public parking ramp that was constructed between 1952 and 1976, and subsequently demolished between 2009 and 2010. The western portion of the site had some combination of buildings and surface parking visible in aerial photographs taken between 1952 and 1979. Since 1984, aerial photographs show the western portion of the site being entirely surface parking. The redevelopment included the construction of three structures: the Tower, the Podium and the Parking Ramp, as shown in Fig. 1. With plan dimensions of roughly 100 feet by 100 feet, the Tower has 1 level of below-grade parking and 19 above-grade levels rising to a height of about 230 feet above grade. The Tower contains eight levels of commercial office space, four levels of hotel, six levels of residences and a mechanical level. This configuration resulted in column service loads ranging between 435 and 2,685 kips. The Tower core area has a total service load of about 30,000 kips.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.

MAGNESIUM oxide is by far the most refractory of the common oxides, since it has a melting point of 5072 deg. F. as compared with 3110 deg. F., the melting point of silica (crystobalite) ; 3722 deg. F., the melting point of alumina (corundum) ; and 4127 deg. F., the melting point of chromite (Cr2O33FeO). Its large-scale use in the lining of metallurgical furnaces dates back to the latter part of the nineteenth century, when extensive deposits of magnesium carbonate were discovered in southern Austria in the province of Styria. Before the development of Austrian magnesite, calcined dolomite, a mixture of lime and magnesia, was used in basic steel-making furnaces. The lime in the dolomite was quite objectionable, since it slaked on exposure to the atmosphere, and dolomite therefore could not be made' .into permanent furnace bottoms or into brick. The Austrian magnesite, with its very low lime content, was free from these objections and soon displaced much of the dolomite. With the extensive development of basic steel-melting, the rise of the copper industry, and other metallurgical and chemical processes which dealt with chemically basic substances, the use of magnesite grain and magnesite brick increased rapidly.

Multivariate cluster analysis, MANOVA, canonical analysis, and discriminant analysis of hydrochemistry data were used to investigate the directions of ground water movement in basalts in the vicinity of the Hanford Reservation, Washington. The statistical analyses indicate that the hydrochemistry of the ground waters in these basalt formations is distinctly different on each side of the Columbia River. This suggests that the river is a ground water divide or that the river is roughly coincident with a hydrogeologic barrier boundary. The statistical procedures used in this study constitute a quantitative means for differentiating ground waters according to hydrochemistry.

Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state regulatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

The bulk of Australia's uranium resour- ces was delineated in the last 18 years when a total of $563 million (1984 dollar values) was spent on uranium exploration. Australia's share of the low-cost Reasonably Assured Re- sources in the World Outside the Centrally Planned Economies Area (WOCA) increased from 1.5% in 1967 to 29% by the end of 1984 and its share of the low-cost Estimated Additional Resources (Category I) then stood at 25%. As of December 1984, Australia's uranium resour- ces were estimated by the BMR to be: Cost range US$80/kg U (US$30/lb U301) Reasonably Assured Resources 463 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 251 000 t U Cost range US$80-130/kg U (US$30-50/lb U308) Reasonably Assured Resources 63 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 126 000 t U The increases in Australia's resources was sustained by a group of large and rela- tively high-grade deposits which were disco- vered during the period 1969 to 1975. Austra- lia's share of the low-cost resources was also enhanced by a contraction of WOCA's low-cost resource base due to escalation of production costs for smaller low-grade deposits. Most of Australia's uranium resources are contained in the Proterozoic unconformity- type deposits of the Alligator Rivers uranium field and the stratabound deposit at Olympic Dam on the Stuart Shelf. Most of the remain- der of Australia's uranium resources is con- tained in calcrete-type deposits. Less than 10% of Australia's uranium resources are in sandstone-type deposits. Total Australian production to the end of 1984 amounted to 26 241 t U, representing 3.4% of WOCA's cumulative production. Aus- tralia's share of WOCA's annual production has steadily increased from 1.3% in 1977 to 11.2% in 1984 (4390 t U). The increases in Austra- lian production took place in the face of reductions of production in WOCA countries, principally the US, from a record level of 43 988 t U in 1980 to about 39 000 t U in 1984. New low-cost production centres, mainly in Australia and Canada, have partly compen- sated the decline in US production. The Department of Resources and Energy (1985) reported that Australian exports of yellowcake are expected to reach 10 000 t U308 (8480 t U) by 1993/94, representing an in- crease of about 13% oer annum.

Cerâmicas porosas foram produzidas com nanopartículas de ferrita de manganês através da técnica de freeze casting, sendo possível obter poros direcionados. Foram produzidas duas amostras dessas cerâmicas tendo como ligante-dispersante o PEG-4000 e PEG-8000, ambos em 8%p. Por MEV foi possível observar as estruturas porosas das cerâmicas. O método de Arquimedes foi utilizado para obter as medidas de porosidade e densidade aparentes e de densificação. A ferrita pura e as amostras sinterizadas foram caracterizadas por DRX e foi identificada apenas a presença da fase ferrita, para as amostras antes da sinterização e transformação de fase da ferrita para óxidos de Mn e Fe após tratamento térmico. Tais resultados possibilitam indicar a aplicação dessas cerâmicas como elementos filtrantes.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. The purpose of this study is to formulate practical guidelines for active underground mining in close proximity to water bodies. This was accomplished through systematic completion of three phases of study: I) Collection and Documentation of Data; II) Application of Existing Guidelines to Case Histories of Previous Inundations; and III) Development of Recommended Guidelines for Underground Coal Mining Near Bodies of Water. Phase I of the study involved a worldwide data collection effort designed to obtain foreign and domestic guidelines for mining near water bodies, and accident records and case histories of accidental mine inundations. Within Phase II, existing guidelines were categorized and classified and then evaluated as to their effectiveness in precluding past inundations had they been in effect at the time of inrush. Advantages and disadvantages of existing guidelines were defined. Drawing on the broad data base established in previous study efforts, Phase III was directed at development of viable guidelines to promote the greatest possible coal extraction while precluding accidental mine inundation. Two levels of guidelines are presented; Level I Guidelines require little or no subsurface exploration on the part of the mine operator, while Level II Guidelines recommend various testing and investigative procedures to permit greatest possible mineral extraction. This report presents findings and conclusions of the study.
