"Based on laboratory testwork, a two-stage cleaner / re-cleaner circuit with feed regrind was proposed to replace an existing single-stage middling circuit treating a scavenger concentrate at Inco’s Clarabelle mill. In order to effectively transfer the technology and implement the new flowsheet in the plant, an extensive on-site pilot plant campaign was conducted. After demonstrating the improved metallurgy, the two-stage middlings circuit was successfully implemented at the operation.The present paper describes the on-site pilot plant testwork and the plant metallurgical improvement after implementation of the new middlings circuit. The addition of TETA / Na2S03 greatly enhanced the pentlandite selectivity against pyrrhotite and the two-stage cleaning considerably improved the pentlandite selectivity against rock minerals. The improvement was immediate after the installation of the new middlings circuit. Size by size recovery analysis indicated that a finer regrind would further improve the metallurgy of the new two-stage cleanerhe-cleaner circuit and those modifications are in progress at the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe milling operation at Inco’s Clarabelle mill has been described elsewhere (Kerr and Kipkie, 1985; Agar, 1991). While maximizing the recoveries of chalcopyrite (Cp) and pentlandite (Pn), continuous effort has been directed toward improving pyrrhotite (Po) and rock minerals (Rk) rejection. Inco discovered diethylene triamine (DETA) and triethylene triamine (TETA) (Marticorena, et al., 1994) for pyrrhotite rejection. Falconbridge further improved pyrrhotite rejection using DETA and SO2 (Kelebek, et al., 1995). No special technologies are used in the rejection of rock minerals."

AMC has completed a number of backfill options studies, including several in recent years for large, three-dimensional orebodies involving total extraction by longhole open stoping with backfill. This has led to the development of a thorough review methodology that assists in the selection of the most appropriate backfill system and the most economic mixes to achieve the required performance. A recently developed design tool has simplified the calculation of backfill strengths for various exposure dimensions and automatically determines strengths incrementally over the height of a stope. Using a generic orebody with a plan dimension of 120 m wide by 360 m long, several different stoping layouts have been analysed to determine the effect of stope dimensions and sequencing on backfill strength requirements. This has been done for stope heights from 50 m to 300 m, in 50 m increments. The required strengths have been calculated in slices and summarised for each stope in four equal layers. The average strength requirement for each layout at each stope height has been compared graphically. For all stope heights, a panel stope layout that minimises the proportion of primary stopes results in a lower average strength requirement than grid layouts on a checkerboard pattern. However, for very high stopes, smaller plan dimensions become more economic. The increase in required strength with stope height is non-linear, making taller stopes potentially more attractive. The main cost factor in most backfills is the rate of binder addition, which is closely related to the strength required. By choosing a layout that minimises the backfill strength requirement, significant savings in binder addition rates and overall costs can be achieved. These must, of course, be weighed against other factors to determine the optimum stoping layout and backfill system.

Nippon Mining and Metals Company has an annual indium production capacity of 30 tons at its Saganoseki smelter and refinery. Lately, indium content in the. zinc smelting dust, one of the main sources, has been on the decrease while the amount of impurity in it on the increase. The present process at Saganoseki does not permit efficient elimination of a large. amount of impurity. Therefore, studies were conducted to improve its recovery process. As a result, a new indium recovery process consisting of leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning has been developed. The new process was tested at a pilot plant and satisfactory results were obtained. This new process is discussed in this paper.

"Alkali precipitation of dissolved metals is an inexpensive but non-selective means of treating mine wastewater. Alternatively, sulphide precipitation can treat to below parts-per-million concentrations while selectively recovering valuable metals. While technically feasible, sulphide treatment of dilute waste streams increases the size and cost of the plant relative to the metals loading. Ion exchange has been applied at two separate sites to pre-concentrate nickel containing wastewater prior to recovery in smaller and more cost effective sulphide precipitation circuits. The result is a dual-circuit system that can maintain high selectivity and reduce overall facility cost while meeting strict effluent regulations.INTRODUCTIONAlkali precipitation using lime is the most common method of treating mining effluents for dissolved metals removal. This method is generally sufficient for waste streams containing mixed metals of little value, and for meeting modest metal concentration limits in the final effluent. Due to the non-selective nature of the lime process, the produced metal hydroxide sludge is of little value. All metals are removed together in a sludge product which cannot be re-processed for further value recovery.By contrast, sulphide precipitation can be used to selectively remove and recover valuable base metals (such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt), since the sulphide will preferentially target these metals without reacting with less valuable metals (such as iron and aluminum). The low solubility of the metal sulphide solids also supports the removal of base metals to lower concentrations than can be achieved with alkali precipitation in addition to other benefits discussed more fully in a prior paper (Bratty, Lawrence, Kratochvil & Marchant, 2006). The corollary to this solubility feature is that sulphide precipitation can function on influent streams containing low (< 10 mg/L) metals concentrations to meet very low parts-perbillion final effluent concentrations. Reagent overdosing is also minimized when compared to alkali precipitation."

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

With the increasing applications of the Chinese metal magnetic liners, the requirement for their technical specifications has become stricter and stricter. It is necessary to deeply analyse the metal magnetic liners in order to improve their reliability and economics. The key issue of metal magnetic liners is magnetic forces: their attractions to mill shell and protection layer. Mathematical models were developed using finite-element analysis software and systematic simulation analyses of the two most critical indexes of magnetic liners were performed to find out the most important parameters and their effect on the liner?s characteristics. The relationships between magnetic forces and installation gaps, thickness of permanent magnets and thickness of protection layer may be used to guide the design of metal magnetic liners for ball mills in order to achieve good economic indexes.

"Underground continuous mining machines pose a difficult safety challenge since their operators generally work in close proximity to these machines in very restricted spaces. Intelligent software for use with magnetic proximity detection systems has been shown to accurately locate workers around mining machinery in real time. Calibrating these systems requires the manipulation of a lot of data to determine the calibration constants. Researchers have developed software to analyze, convert, and visualize data acquired during this calibration process to more accurately model magnetic fields and their interaction with the environment. This paper details the background, development, and operation of the resulting application software focusing on the utility of the graphical user interface to visualize the magnetic field calibration data. The refined data developed by this process can then be utilized by the proximity detection system to more accurately identify the location of miners working in an underground mining environment. INTRODUCTION Roughly half of the electricity consumed in the United States is produced with coal, and roughly one-third of all US coal production comes from underground mines [1]. Over the last century underground mining health and safety has seen a continuous and dramatic improvement. However, machine-related injuries and fatalities continue to be a major safety concern [2]. Every year, hundreds of miners are severely injured while operating underground mining equipment, and 39 miners have been killed in striking/pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines (CMMs) since 1984. CMMs, such as the one shown in Figure 1, are large mobile machines that are used to mechanically cut coal in an underground mine. These machines weigh approximately 40 to 50 tons, have hydraulically articulated appendages, and are capable of moving at speeds up to six feet per second [3]. Modern CMMs are remote-controlled, yet the operator and other miners are often in close proximity to the machine. Recent research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reveals that the locations workers take relative to the CMM are usually influenced by visibility requirements and safety concerns [4]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) estimates that at least 28 fatalities involving CMMs since October of 1984 may have been prevented with proximity detection technology [5]. MSHA further estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [6]."

Grinding and classification circuits at Climax Molybdenum Co. are described. Since the installation of a direct digital control computer in 1974, a number of control strategies were developed and evaluated. This paper deals in particular with the practical experience and results obtained in direct digital control of a wet grinding circuit consisting of a ball mill, constant speed sump pump, and hydrocyclones. For this circuit throughput is maximized, while maintaining a desired product size. Product size is inferred from measurement of operating variables.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified low factor-of-safety due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the low factor-of-safety area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model. Electronic detonators and blast initiation systems were combined with advanced blast vibration modelling software to produce optimal timing sequences with predictable vibration outcomes. Although minimising vibration was the primary focus, blasting induced frequency was also a concern for the project team and therefore initiation sequencing was optimised to also avoid undesirable frequencies. Minor variations in ground factors (vibration transmission and attenuation) were noted, and therefore justified the inclusion of regular signature holes which allowed continual vibration model updates. Blasting results produced vibration and frequency measurements within allowable limits and closely resembled the predictive model. These positive results were achievable through the combination of electronic detonators, advanced modelling software and good onsite practices by engineering and on-bench teams alike. This project will remain ongoing as the pit progresses to deeper benches, and therefore the same methodology will be applied; quality and continual data collection, the use of electronic detonators, and optimisation via advanced vibration and frequency modelling software. I was delighted to be invited to be patron of this Joint Conference, but the challenging task you have set yourselves, and your speakers&apos; depth of expertise, deny anyone, even the patron, the opportunity to be patronizing. Australia&apos;s history has been inextricably link- ed with the fortunes of our great mining industry. That link will remain. Just as the gold rushes of the last century, and the discoveries at Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill changed the lives of generations, so the more recent development activity in iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, and uranium are having a significant impact on the lives of Australians today. The minerals industry has contributed to Aust- ralia&apos;s jobs and prosperity. Mining is not free of problems, but so long as safeguards are strong and appropriate the net benefits the mining in- dustry brings Australia will continue to be enor- mous. We rely on our mining industry to find, prove, develop and sell our minerals profitably, and my Government is committed to maintaining a healthy mining industry.

IT is a pleasure to realize even at that day the dignity of the engineer&apos;s calling was upheld. May I also add my firm belief that today there be many engineers who will qualify to the specifications of our interesting author. Since that time, the development of the world has been chiefly due to the engineer, and so far as human brain can foresee, the material tasks of the future will continue to follow the directions of his judgment. Popular opinion says this is the age of the engineer; literature, which in the long run, voices public sentiment, shows it in the number of engineers who figure as characters of fiction. The engineer has been doing the big things necessary to increase the comfort and efficiency of mankind, but while a certain amount of fame and repute falls to him, too often he figures as the hired man of the entrepreneur, using that term not in the offensive sense of a mere promoter, but to mean the great visioned master of enterprise who has seen ahead of other men, recognized the coming needs of the world, and through ability to inspire others and to hire capital for his use has also been able to hire engineers as needed. Justly enough, therefore, to such men comes the fame as well as the prize of the game.

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."

"Jurisdictions across the world have struggled to create and finance systems that can effectively collect and process electronics waste (e-waste). Many different system architectures have been proposed and implemented, but it is difficult for policy-makers and system architects to compare the costs and benefits of different systems, particularly when the systems operate in different contexts. This paper presents a systematic methodology that seeks to address this challenge and uses data from several existing electronics recycling systems across the world to illustrate its implementation. The methodology characterizes three main system characteristics: architecture (e.g., financing and collection methods), context (e.g., jurisdiction population, density, and wages), and performance, both economic and materials collection. A comparison of systems in Europe and North America with different system architectures and contexts illuminates the importance of using the methodology to discern the extent to which architecture and context drive system performance.IntroductionElectronic waste (e-waste) recycling offers several environmental benefits when processing is done responsibly. The controversy around e-waste recycling systems rarely debates such benefits; rather, it focuses on the characteristics of an effective system and whether benefits outweigh costs. Historically, the costs of recycling most electronics have outweighed the value of the scrap recovered. Thus, in the absence of legislation, e-waste recycling systems have been limited to private recycling of high-value waste with minimal consumer participation. E-waste recycling systems now exist in many locations worldwide including Asia, the European Union, Canada and the United States and the amount of related legislation continues to increase. Numerous approaches have been proposed including landfill bans, extended producer responsibility (EPR) and consumer advance recovery fee (ARF) funded recycling systems."

"A new embassy for the Peoples Republic of China is under construction in Washington, DC. The 475,000 square feet (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and up to 98 feet (29.9 m) in height. The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors. Overall, wall movements were lower than expected, with maximum horizontal movement less than 0.25% of the total height of the excavation.INTRODUCTIONThe proposed Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in Washington, DC, will consist of about 475,000 ft2 (44,125 m2) of building space and contain up to four fl oor levels above ground and fi ve levels of basement (Figure 1). When completed, the building will be the largest embassy in Washington, DC. The architect for the project, Pei Partnership Architects, along with the world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, made effi cient use of the site by inserting the building into the existing slope. Consequently, excavations reach heights up to 98 feet (29.9 m) on the southern side of the property and 42 feet (12.8 m) on the northern side.The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. The location of the building relative to the property line called for tight excavation requirements, including precise wall positions and shotcrete tolerances. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, arched walls, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors.SITE INVESTIGATIONInformation obtained from the geotechnical investigation revealed about 10 to 20 feet (3.1 to 6.1 m) of a loose to medium dense fi ll material placed during previous site activities. The fi ll material was underlain by a silty sand and sandy silt residual soil derived from the natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. This soil sequenced naturally from a medium dense to very dense material through natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. This soil sequenced naturally from a medium dense to very dense material through natural weathering processes in the rock. The underlying bedrock was locally characterized as a gneiss. A water table elevation about 17 feet (5.2 m) above the fi nal excavation level was revealed, except in the “radius” area, where a leaking water main/hydrant generated a high local water table."

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L. IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75&#176; west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response&#160;on a tight grid spacing.
