This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

The periphery of longwall panels in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed is characterized by a zone of reduced permeability that inhibits the natural drainage of methane. A residual gas pressure of 105 psig was measured after 1 year in an isolated block of coal measuring 340 by 1,100 feet. The buildup of gas pressure within such large blocks causes methane problems during plowing operations. However, natural drainage holes drilled during development have been found to reduce the gas content of the coal in this coalbed by over 90 percent. The effect of water infusion on dust during plowing operations was investigated using existing methane drainage holes. These holes were cleaned of debris and a pipe was grouted into the hole for water infusion of the panel. Both total and respirable dust levels were reduced by 40 to 79 percent. Water infusion of the panel proved more effective than did the use of a plow-mounted spray system.

A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

Recently the attention of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has in a number of instances been called to the firing of shots of permissible explosives in coal mines with delay-action detonators. In one bituminous coal mine they were used to bring down the coal for conveyor loading; in another in blasting pillars, which were not undercut; in another in one of the two charges separated by stemming in deep drill holes where the coal was undercut and sheared and mechanically loaded; in another in shooting top coal; and in another in the shooting of coal faces electrically from the surface. Some of these mines were rated as gassy by the State Mining Department in the State concerned. In most instances the charging of holes was done while the working shift was in the mine, and in some the shots were blasted while the working shift was in the mine. In all of these cases the shots were dependent - that is, the efficacy of the succeeding shots was dependent - upon the firing of the preceding shot or shots. The first shot, or possibly two or three shots, was usually fired with a no-delay electric detonator or an instantaneous electric detonator.

In-situ measurements of ground stress were made from surface boreholes, using overcoring and hydrofracturing techniques, to obtain data for the detailed design of the underground works at Pergau. Unexpectedly low stresses were measured and appeared to correlate with apparent hydrofracturing observed during permeability testing. The low values of the minor principal stress had a major impact on design, particularly of the lining for the pressure tunnel and shaft. Additional hydrofracture tests were made underground during construction of the low- and high-pressure headrace tunnels and the pressure shaft, to define the vertical reduction in the minor principal stress with overburden. These data were then used to locate and design the steel and reinforced concrete linings

The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming. A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .

"As there are only limited numbers of bored pile constructed in sandstone and siltstone in Thailand, load transfer and settlement behavior of a pile in these rocks are still not fully understood. Major factors which influence the performance of the pile in the sedimentary rock should be systematically investigated. The objective of this paper is to analyze load distribution and load-settlement behavior of bored pile in sedimentary rock. Interpreted data was obtained from instrumented load testing results of large-diameter bored piles. These piles were drilled in aeolian soil and socketed in sandstone or siltstone, having socketed length varying from 1 to 3 times the pile diameter. Factors that influenced pile settlement behavior, consisting of rock type at the pile base, socket length, at-rest earth pressure and rock conditions, were analyzed. For interpretation of results, analytical solutions were used to estimate load bearing capacity and calculate settlement of each pile. According to test results of mobilized unit skin friction in siltstone, relationship of 0.1 – 0.3 square root of the unconfined compressive strength of rock appears to reasonably capture the measured shaft friction. Note that shaft movement in siltstone layer was not fully mobilized as maximum pile head settlement was still less that 1% of the pile diameter.INTRODUCTIONExtensive research of bored pile construction in soft soil in Thailand and Myanmar (Boonyarak et al., 2016; Aye et al., 2015) has been carried out. However, behavior of bored pile in weak rocks such as sandstone and siltstone is still not fully understood. Unit skin friction and unit end bearing of piles in these weak rock were reported by Horvath et al. (1983) and Pells and Turner (1980), respectively. Further research is still required to minimize variation in data presented in their study.This paper presents interpretation of load testing results of instrumented piles. These piles were excavated in aeolian deposit in the Northeast Thailand. Some piles were socketed in sandstone or siltstone. Analysis results of load-settlement, shaft shortening, pile settlement estimation, factor for calculating shaft friction and end bearing are reported. Discussion and explanation of pile behavior in sandstone and siltstone is provided.BRIEF INFORMATION OF THE PROJECTProject locationsThe construction sites are located in Khon Kaen and Nakhorn Ratchasima Provinces in the Northeast Thailand. Bored piles in this project were designed for supporting elevated structures for railways, overpasses and U-turn bridges for vehicles. These overpasses and U-turn bridges are distributed along the existing railways with the distance of about 180 km."

At present, in Japan, the application of in-place leaching technique to the mined-out stopes has been carried out at two copper mines in a comparatively large scale. These mines are the Kosaka mine and the Tsuchihata mine, both are situated in the north-east district of Japan. At first, the author would like to tell about the in-place leaching operations and their results at these two mines. Then, the problems involved in the application of in-place leaching technique to the Japanese metal mines and the possibility of the future development of this technique in Japan are referred, too. Next, as to the research works, the author would like to explain briefly about some of the important results obtained in the recent studies on in-place leaching as well as on bacterial leaching in Japan.

The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. In order to test the extent and possibilities of the oil-bearing sand in this region, the Commonwealth and State Governments jointly put down six scout boreholes to depths of between 1200 and I500 it. The technology and the knowledge about the behavior of explosives and detonation accessories allowed to create new products for different situations by the restrictions imposed by the market. In a Brazilian underground copper mine the restriction occurred in the use of high grammage Det Cord in the development heading blasts perimeter holes. Enaex Brazil has developed Densiex UG™ (Low-Density Bulk Emulsion), a water-resistant bulk gassing emulsion with a density ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 g/cm³ to replace the high grammage Det Cord in blasts. That product is pumped in the same Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU) as Enaex Brazil's standard underground (UG) bulk emulsion. This product has a Lower Velocity of Detonation (VOD), vibration, and detonation pressure, which contributes to a better finishing of the drift, lower impact in the support structures, and lower generation on unstable rocks in the perimeter of the drift. This case aims to summarize the results of the work on the application of the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion in perimeter holes in an underground development gallery at an underground copper mine in Brazil. During this work, 10 horizontal drift blasts were performed using the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion, which presented an average density of 0.64 g/cm³, increasing safety, a 25% reduction in overbreak, a 23% reduction in scaling time, elimination of rework, and a saving of $135,000 per year for this business partner that immediately implemented this new product in all blasts at this mine.

The year 1939 witnessed the rapid development of several of the more important Rocky Mountain oil and gas areas and the discovery of new oil and gas fields. As a further result of an active year, many oil fields had their productive limits greatly extended or responded to deeper drilling with oil production in lower horizons. In Colorado there was a substantial increase in refinery capacity, with three new units constructed. Its contribution to the crude-oil supply was an important extension of the producing area of a Western Slope field and a deeper oil-producing horizon in an old field east of the Front Range. Occurrences of gas were reported in two wells in northwestern Colorado, but severe winter weather prevented tests and the value of these discoveries cannot be determined at this time. Montana's northern fields were extended and a number of record wells were completed. The North Cut Bank area gives promise of wide expansion in 1940. The gas-producing area of Wyoming's Elk Basin field was extended into Montana on the north plunge of the anticline. The most important developments in Wyoming oil fields in 1939 were extensions to the producing area of Lance Creek and the discovery of a deeper pay in the Tensleep formation at Wertz dome. A new gas field at Horn Valley in the south central part of the state was the only new field discovered, but wildcatting was at low ebb in Wyoming in 1939. Colorado In Colorado, the year 1939 saw the completion of several interesting tests, but largely with negative results. Oil was discovered, however, in a deeper sand in the old Fort Collins field and the productive area of the Wilson Creek field was extended. Gas had been noted in two Western Slope wells, at Yellowjacket-Buford and at Trull, but their volumes had not been determined at the end of the year. Of principal interest, however, were the failures, descriptions of which will be given presently. One of these established a new depth record for Colorado.

The year 1939 witnessed the rapid development of several of the more important Rocky Mountain oil and gas areas and the discovery of new oil and gas fields. As a further result of an active year, many oil fields had their productive limits greatly extended or responded to deeper drilling with oil production in lower horizons. In Colorado there was a substantial increase in refinery capacity, with three new units constructed. Its contribution to the crude-oil supply was an important extension of the producing area of a Western Slope field and a deeper oil-producing horizon in an old field east of the Front Range. Occurrences of gas were reported in two wells in northwestern Colorado, but severe winter weather prevented tests and the value of these discoveries cannot be determined at this time. Montana's northern fields were extended and a number of record wells were completed. The North Cut Bank area gives promise of wide expansion in 1940. The gas-producing area of Wyoming's Elk Basin field was extended into Montana on the north plunge of the anticline. The most important developments in Wyoming oil fields in 1939 were extensions to the producing area of Lance Creek and the discovery of a deeper pay in the Tensleep formation at Wertz dome. A new gas field at Horn Valley in the south central part of the state was the only new field discovered, but wildcatting was at low ebb in Wyoming in 1939. Colorado In Colorado, the year 1939 saw the completion of several interesting tests, but largely with negative results. Oil was discovered, however, in a deeper sand in the old Fort Collins field and the productive area of the Wilson Creek field was extended. Gas had been noted in two Western Slope wells, at Yellowjacket-Buford and at Trull, but their volumes had not been determined at the end of the year. Of principal interest, however, were the failures, descriptions of which will be given presently. One of these established a new depth record for Colorado.

A relaxation peak thought to be due to the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt has been observed. It exists both above 420"C, where cobalt has the fcc structure, and below 420"C, where cobalt has the hcp structure at equilibrium. The effect is thought, however, to be caused by motion of C-C pairs in the fcc phase in both instances; enough retained fcc phase was deduced to be present at temperatures below 420°C to make the phenomenon possible. Measurements of the aniso-tropy of the effect in single crystals of various orientations of fcc phase showed the effect to have a maximum value in longitudinal strain for a [loo] crystal and a minimum value for a [Ill] crystal. This observation seems to rule out the possibility of (110) nn pairs being responsible for the effect. From measurements of the strength of the relaxation in the alloys, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of the pairs and the specific relaxation per pair are smaller than corresponding quantities for interstitial pairs in bcc metals. DETERMINATION of the details of atom placement of small atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in metals has been a difficult problem. In certain alloys such as martensite extensive departure from random placement of the interstitials can be deduced from X-ray diffraction off the atoms of the host metal, but such diffraction techniques are of small help for small departures from randomness. A technique which does offer promise in the latter instance is the anelasticity of these interstitial alloys. Most previous investigations using this property have utilized alloys in which the solvent is one of the bcc metals, alloys such as These studies have been interpreted to show that an interaction exists between interstitials which causes them to form clusters in more than random numbers; the binding energy of interstitials in such clusters has been deduced to be about 0.1 ev per atom (for small clusters of size two to four atoms). Similar investigations have been carried out on close-packed solvent metals, Ni-C by and Diamond and Ag-O by Papazian.8- In both of these svstems. no relaxation of the singly dissolved interstitial is expected, so an-elastic behavior of the interstitials must be caused by their association in some cluster or complex of non-cubic symmetry. Since relaxations in these alloys were observed to have a strength which varied about as the square of the interstitial concentration, the effect was deduced to be caused predominately by motion of i-i pairs in the crystal. A striking difference is observed in relaxation strength of interstitial alloys between the bcc and fcc systems. The specific effect per interstitial atom is much larger for the alloys in the bcc crystals than for those in fcc crystals. Comparing clusters of size two in the Nb-O system4 and the Ni-C system,7 one finds the magnitude of the anelastic effect per interstitial atom in the former to be some 100 times greater than that in the latter. Such a difference in relaxation strength might be caused by a difference in concentration of the pairs (this means a higher binding energy in the bcc crystals). It might also be caused by a large difference in shape factor of the elastic strain field about the pairs between the two cases (a much more noncubic shape factor would be required for the bcc crystals). This investigation was undertaken to examine the possibility of C-C pair formation in alloys of cobalt and carbon using anelastic effects. Since cobalt has both fcc and hep phases, it seemed to offer the chance that measurements over a range of frequency might permit comparison of properties of pairs in the two crystal types. Although this goal was not reached, several significant facts were deduced from the observations. 1) An anelastic phenomenon believed to be associated with the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt exists. It has many features in common with that observed in nickel. 2) The effect is thought to be caused by pair motion in the fcc phase. 3) Calculations of the relaxation strength A, which includes as a parameter the product of the pair concentration, C, and the square of the shape factor ', show that this parameter is much smaller in the CO-C alloy system than in the interstitial alloys in the bcc systems. 4) From this finding, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of C-C pairs in cobalt and the specific relaxation strength per pair are small compared to corresponding values for such pairs in the bcc systems. 5) The crystalline anisotropy of the effect permits the identification of reasonable geometrical models of close C-C pairs. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Method of Measurement. The anelastic measurements-—all of which were constant frequency measurements of internal friction—were designed to study the expected phenomenon in both the hcp and fcc structures in cobalt. Knowledge of similar measurements in Ni-C alloys led us to believe that the damping peak should occur below the transformation temperature for frequencies near 1 cps and above for frequencies near 100 kcps. This surmise was correct. The low-frequency measurements were made on wire specimens using a vacuum torsion pendulum; the damping peak was found at about 2'70°C at a frequency of 1 cps. Because of large superimposed damping of magnetic origin at this temperature, a longitudinal magnetic field of about 1500 oe was applied to the
