"Geological investigation in the Appalachian region of Canada began more than 150 years ago. The distribution of rock formations, and their ages and regional structure are today reasonably well known in most parts of the region to 1-or 2-mile scale. Most Newfoundland geology is known only to 4-mile scale. About 200 earth scientists carry out research in the region, of whom about 25 per cent are government employees, 50 per cent university staff and graduate students, and 25 per cent industry employees.Increased activity is needed toward both regional analyses and problem studies through the efforts of multi-disciplinary teams. The ultimate objectives of earth science must be the discovery and development of mineral re•-sources and the use and conservation of natural material in the environment, all for the benefit of the local in-habitants. To accomplish this, the scientific community must carry out an array of research projects ranging from the technical products of geological, geophysical and geochemical surveys through to the research products de-signed to renew theories and hypotheses bearing on natural processes. Some scientific sub-objectives are listed.Recommended is the increase and broadening of communication among Appalachian scientists, specifically those resident in the Atlantic Provinces. It is proposed that an Appalachian Division of the Geological Association of Canada be formed to provide a forum for discussion of Appalachian topics. In addition, a committee or council of university, industry and government earth scientists should be formed to examine the state of the science in the region, to identify programs of investigation and individual projects of research, and to recommend methods of approach. If the committee succeeds and the scientific community acts upon the recommendations, the quantity, quality and pertinence of research will increase, and earth science will better serve Appalachian society."

Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

The Boston & Montana Reduction Works at Great Falls, Mont., was formerly the reduction works of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining Co., and continued as the reduction plant for the independent company until June 1, 1910, when the consolidation of a large number of the operating companies of Butte was effected. It then became merged in the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as the Boston & Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The history of copper converting at this plant, while not covering the entire period of the commercial use of the process in this country, does cover by far the larger part of it, and as the operation of and appliances for the process have undergone many changes during the time, it may, perhaps, be of some interest to put the record of these changes into permanent form. The plan followed in the preparation of this paper has been to give first a brief chronological record of the principal events and changes and then, even at the risk of some repetitions, to give more detaild accounts of some of these changes under separate headings. As transformações sequenciais estão presentes em vários materiais, como por exemplo, nos aços, onde na transformação da Austenita em Ferrita e Perlita, tem-se inicialmente a nucleação dos grãos ferríticos e em um instante posterior a nucleação dos grãos perlíticos. Recentemente, Rios e Villa apresentaram um método analítico exato que se aplica às transformações de fase simultâneas e/ou sequenciais. Neste trabalho o método do Cone Causal (CC) foi utilizado para o modelamento microestrutural das transformações sequenciais. Vale ressaltar que o CC é um método computacional muito versátil, sua eficiência em simulações de nucleação e crescimento já foi apresentada em trabalhos prévios. Os dados obtidos nas simulações foram comparados com as equações analíticas de Rios e Villa. A simulação permite obter, além da microestrutura propriamente dita, grandezas microestruturais quantitativas, tais como: fração volumétrica transformada, área superficial por unidade de volume, velocidade de avanço das interfaces e o caminho microestrutural.

The organisers of this function have suggested that this presentation should accomplish the following broad goals:set the technical tone for the conference to follow, implying some discussion of the æstate-of-the-artÆ of reserve estimation; and raise some current and common problems or deficiencies in our art in order to be thought provoking. As an engineer it is always easier to raise problems than to solve them with state-of-the-art. Consequently, I have had to limit the extensive list of problems that could have been discussed within this presentation. In regard to the state-of-the-art, this presentation will not be an esoteric discussion of the latest statistical estimation processes, although I intend to challenge those with skills in that area to address some of the thought provoking issues later on. The subtitle of the paper was established after reading an excerpt from æLife on the MississippiÆ by the American humorist Mark Twain in which Twain observed that the Mississippi River had become shorter during his working period on the River due to natural cut-offs and man made channels. Projecting into the future, he calculated that by now, Cairo, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana would become a single city with one mayor (the two cities are still separated by some 500 air miles). As a moral to this story Mark Twain observed that one can obtain: æwholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of factÆ.

The mining/mineral processing industry constantly faces the challenges of handling tons of material in a variety of processes such as crushing, milling, drying, belt transfer and loadout. These processes result in the production of high volumes of dust. A variety of dust detection and collection equipment is needed to properly manage these emissions to remain compliant with stringent air quality and safety requirements. Dust monitoring and bag leak detection can provide ways to reduce air pollutants, make work environments safer and remain compliant with requirements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). There are several approaches to monitoring particulate emissions from dust collection equipment. These can include visual inspections, differential pressure gauges or bag leak detection systems. Bag leak detection and monitoring systems can be optical, light based or electrostatic/triboelectric. Recent developments have advanced the efficiency and reliability of electrostatic/triboelectric style monitors. New technological improvements have been developed that are based upon the principal of unifying dc (impaction) and ac (induction) signals and incorporating other proprietary circuit innovations. This higher signal resolution technology results in a more robust and stable measurement for detecting the presence of particulate in a dust collector emission duct or a flow process pipe.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

A presença do fósforo, em determinados teores, provoca a fragilização dos aços, sendo, portanto, um elemento restritivo ao aproveitamento de importantes recursos minerais. O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a origem do fósforo em um concentrado de minério de ferro que apresenta teor de fósforo de 0,059%, superior ao recomendado para certas finalidades. Foi realizada uma investigação do modo de ocorrência do fósforo no minério utilizando-se as técnicas de microscopia ótica e microssonda eletrônica (análises semi-quantitativas e obtenção de espectros por EDS). Observou-se que apenas uma pequena quantidade de fósforo encontrase associada à hematita. A maior parcela de apatita representa uma mineralogia acessória.

The oil shales in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado occur in the Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation. The oil shales were deposited in a unique environment of deposition which caused the mineral nahcolite (NaHC03) to be precipitated within the oil shales. Post-depositional tectonics resulted in extensive fracturing of the Middle Zone of the Parachute Creek member, and to a lesser degree portions of the Lower Zone, which allowed percolating ground waters to dissolve the nahcolite in the fractured portion of the oil shale beds which is characterized by broken porous oil shale, certain beds of which have collapsed into rubble and debris. The extent and porosity of the Leach Zone aquifer is dependent upon the percentage of kerogen and nahcolite originally deposited in the oil shale. Any oil shale development program in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado will need to be preceeded by an extensive study of the Leach Zone in order to determine the effects on a mining program.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the domestic primary and secondary lead smelting and refining industries to determine the economic impacts of existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety regulations. The impacts are assessed in terms of capital and operating costs for existing and alternative smelting/ refining technologies. Industry response to regulatory implementation is estimated and quantified in terms of import value from lost lead production. For the primary lead industry, regulatory compliance may add up to 1.15 ¢/lb refined lead to operating cost for rehabilitated plants. Alternative smelting/refining methods could reduce net operating costs by as much as 4.36 ¢/lb refined lead. Capital expenditures would vary from $750 to $1,000 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Secondary lead smelter operating costs would increase about 3.8 ¢/lb refined lead to comply with existing regulations. Capital expenditures would average about $124 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Implementation and enforcement of proposed regulations would result in closure of the primary lead industry and additional expenditures for compliance by the secondary lead industry. Enforcement of the most extreme proposed regulations would force the secondary lead industry to close.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) The following notes are contributed, not with the idea of offering a complete history of the development of this very important process as applied to the Leadville district, but with the hope that the practice, as it was carried out in the Bi-Metallic Smelter, may still be of interest to others. The Bi-Metallic Smelter, at Leadville, Colo., was the first to make a commercial success of the process described in the following pages, which consisted essentially of smelting raw silver- and copper-bearing sulphide ores in blast-furnaces to form a matte, which was generally re-smelted with siliceous ores for a second high-grade matte. Robert Sticht, in his excellent monograph on the subject,1 has outlined briefly the plant belonging to this company. He says, in effect: The Boulder, Mont., enterprise set the example for others with whom the patentee (w. L. Austin) had been negotiating, and the old La Plata lead-smelter at Leadville, Colo., was fashioned into a crude, temporary experimental plant for the Bi-Metallic Company, and the feasibility of the process demonstrated by a trial run. Subsequently, the plant was considerably improved, and, being supplied with very favorable ores, continued to run without interruption from August, 1892, to June, 1893. In September, 1893, smelting was resumed in a completely remodeled establishment, some $200,000 having been expended upon the new work. Thus, aside from the Montana experiments, which, under the direction of W. L. Stress-relief techniques and instrumentation have been developed through many years of research in the Bureau of Mines and successfully used to determine the in situ state of stress in rock. This report describes the Bureau's three-component borehole deformation gauge and the drilling equipment and accessories used with it. Operation and calibration procedures for the deformation gauge are discussed in detail, along with site selection and overcoring procedures. Information and references included in this publication provide a guide to the Bureau's cover-coring method for determining rock stress.

The no. 7 vein system cuts the Ventures gabbro which has undergone folding and fracturing; the latter, in response to movement on the nearby Campbell Lake fault. It fills a shear fracture which pinches and swells in the upper mine levels but has a more uniform width in the lower levels. The best copper and gold grades in the upper levels occur in the widest parts of this structure. The vein is richer in quartz on upper mine levels and in carbonate on lower levels. The north wall of the vein is more affected by major and minor element wallrock alteration than the south wall. The isocumulative ci;rves for gold and copper show a direct correlation between the two metals in the upper levels and their increased concentration in the wider parts of the vein. Gold grade decreases in lower levels. A proposed structural model identifies the no. 3 and no. 7 veins as second order conjugate fractures, related to the Campbell Lake fault. The fractures pattern suggests that a conjugate system developed between these two parallel veins as a consequence of rock competence and a relatively low confining pressure.

"THE YEAR 1959 appeared to be a good one in which to attempt a summary of progress in the location and study of sulphide deposits in Canada because a temporary surplus of metals caused prices to fall and many geologists who had been working like beavers were suddenly not so hard pressed. So it was •decided to arrange a Symposium. The response to the call for contributions was excellent and the result is the interesting collection of papers that follow.Activity in the search for massive sulphide deposits has never been as intense as in Canada since 1954. That was the year when the airborne electro-magnetometer first became generally available on a contract basis. These instruments work best on massive sulphide bodies, as do most of the ground electrical survey devices, so much of the new information relates to these. It was decided, therefore, to focus attention in the preparation of symposium papers on such masses. This served also to keep the survey within reasonable limits."

As fibras naturais foram estudadas como um material de reforço alternativo para substituir o uso de fibras sintéticas. Com o objetivo de melhorar as propriedades dos compostos de fibras naturais, é investigado o uso de tecidos de fibras naturais, uma vez que proporcionam reforço multidirecional e permite a introdução de uma fração de volume de fibra maior. Neste trabalho, investigou-se o comportamento de tração de compósitos de matriz epóxi reforçados com diferentes frações de volume de tecido feito de rami, uma fibra lignocelulósica altamente resistente. Os espécimes foram feitos pressionando o tecido com resina epóxi para garantir a impregnação total, e depois cortando o tecido no formato do molde. Finalmente, as camadas de tecido foram colocadas no molde com a resina líquida e o catalisador. O material foi curado durante 24 horas e testado. Os resultados revelaram um aumento na resistência à tração e quase nenhum efeito no módulo de elasticidade com o aumento da fração do volume do tecido.

Os aços API com classificação X52 são considerados aços alta resistência baixa liga (ARBL). Estes materiais possuem como principais características a elevada resistência mecânica, tenacidade e boa soldabilidade. Os aços API são muito utilizados para a produção de tubulações que realizam o transporte de água, petróleo, gás e derivados. A produção dos tubos envolve processos de soldagem, que podem provocar mudanças na microesturura do material. Dessa forma, pesquisas são realizadas com o objetivo de investigar a relação entre o processo de soldagem com a microestrutura e a resistência mecânica do material. Este trabalho tem como objetivo comparar dois processos de soldagem: GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) e o SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), a fim de verificar a relação entre os diferentes processos e a microestrutura da junta soldada. Foram realizadas observações da macro e da micro estrutura. Verificou-se que a amostra soldada pelo processo GTAW apresentou uma microestutura com maior número de fases.

"En los últimos años, la minería ha utilizado los relaves de concentradora, previamente deslamados como material de relleno en las labores subterraneas. Sin embargo, el tonelaje disponible por este sistema no satisface lasnecesidades de relleno de la mina. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la aplicabilidad del sistema complementario en la mina Francois. Por ello, se han considerado dos sistemas principales para la recuperación y tratamiento de los relaves antiguos: Dragado e Hidráulica. Estos sistemas contienen un equipo de extracción y dilución del relave antiguo, equipo de bombeo, estación de tratamiento para los relaves antiguos, el equipo de almacenamiento y dosaje y equipo de bombeo. Las variantes de los dos sistemas son: equipos, densidades del relave y volumen de agua. De forma que la cantidad de agua recuperada de los relaves de flotación es suficiente para operar el circuito con cualesquiera de los sistemas propuestos. "
