Eventualmente torna-se necessário fazer adaptações em estruturas de concreto durante ou após sua execução, de modo a adequar componentes em concreto armado. Essas mudanças não previstas no dimensionamento das estruturas pode comprometer a resistência aos esforços de tais estruturas, invariavelmente necessitando da introdução de um reforço estrutural. As técnicas mais conhecidas e utilizadas para reforços em estruturas de concreto armado são: adição de barras de aço, chapas de aço, fibra de carbono e protensão externa. Adicionalmente, ensaios práticos tornam possível quantificar a eficiência do reforço de um estrutural adotado, inclusive para verificar a eficiência entre a aderência, sob o ponto de vista estrutural, dos materiais empregados. O método de reforço de estruturas de concreto armado por meio de vergalhões adicionais é a técnica mais utilizada atualmente por ser de fácil execução, não precisar de mão de obra especializada e possuir o melhor custo x benefício. Assim sendo, este trabalho avaliou, a eficiência do reforço estrutural em uma viga submetida a furo não previsto em projeto utilizando os métodos de adição de vergalhões e barras de aço na região tracionada da viga. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados com os observáveis em uma barra de concreto, com área de aço normal.

In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.

A brief résumé follows of recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

The Bureau of Mines has recently collected two samples of crude oil from wells in the Greasewood Flat, area of northeastern Colorado. Sample 31310 was taken from the Continental Oi1 Co.'s well Briggs No. 1 which came in on September 27,7.931, with a maximum production of 940 barrels per day. Sample 31311 was taken from the Reiter-Foster Oil Co.'s well Ida Johnson No. 1 which came in on August 24, 1931 with a maximum production of approximately 1000 barrels per day. These two samples of crude oil are typical "intermediate base" crude oils according to the classification defined by Smith and Lane. The characteristics of these two samples, as shown by the Hempel analyses, indicate that they are almost identical. They have a very low sulphur content, and the residuum has a low carbon-residue content which would indicate that they are excellent crude oils for refining. Crude oils yielding a residuum which has a carbon-residue content of 4 per cent or less usually make good material for the manufacture of cylinder stocks. The pour points of the samples and the cloud test of the fractions obtained from the vacuum distillation indicate that the Greasewood Flat oil contains considerable wax. The high wax content would cause some difficulty in transmitting this oil through a pipe fine during extreme cold weather.

"The integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) aims to provide life cycle management decisions for military platforms and their propulsion systems with reduced life cycle cost and increased operational readiness and safety. Among all the issues of IVHM, understanding the physics of failure and predicting lifetimes of the critical components are at the core: the decision makers have to know when and how components may fail in order to plan ahead. The difficulties to tackle failure problems lie in determining the material response to cyclic and dwell loading in a hot and/or corrosive environment, which all combined to induce multiple deformation and damage mechanisms, resulting in mix-mode failures. Decisions on component replacement (material substitution) and mission planning must be based on quantitative knowledge of the failure physics to mitigating the risk. This paper addresses the critical failure issues including creep, low cycle fatigue (LCF), thermomechanical fatigue (TMF); and presents a mechanism-based approach to life prediction. The mechanism-based approach, by its physics, is widely applicable over the entire operational spectrum of both structures and engines, and therefore is suitable for IVHM purposes."

Key issues in managing information systems in the minerals industry will likely continue to be those relating to the integration and interoperability of disparate systems. This paper argues that, in order to harness the promised benefits of information technologies, the mining industry should adopt a set of open systems standards to define data formats and protocols for seamless data exchange. This is in direct contrast to the present situation where mining equipment, software and instrument suppliers rigidly adhere to proprietary standards for fear of losing competitive advantage. Benefits to the mining sector resulting from the adoption of such standards would be: the provision of near-time data for executive decision support, and the freedom to choose best technologies. The principal benefits to the leading mining software suppliers will be increased market share as a result of “captive sites” converting to open systems standards. Examples are given of open systems standards developed for related industries such as the Petroleum Open Systems Corporation (POSC) and the Machinery Information Management Open Systems Alliance (MIMOSA).

LIABILITY OF RAILROADS, ETC., FOR BURIAL EXPENSES.-When any railroad company, stage or any steamboat, propeller, or other vessel engaged in whole or in part in carrying passengers for hire, brings the dead body of any person into this State, or any person dies upon any railroad car or in such stage, steamboat, propeller or other vessel in this State, or any person is killed by cars, or machinery of any railroad company or by accident thereto or by accident to or upon any such stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, or by accident to or in or about any mine, mill or manufactory,* the company or person owning or operating such cars, inachinery, stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, mine, mill or manufactory shall be liable to pay the expenses of the coroner's inquest upon and burial of the deceased and the same may be recovered in the name of the County in any court of competent Jurisdiction. NOTE--The original Act of February 15, 1855 (Laws 1855, p. 170), makes no reference to the dead bodies of persons killed" by accident to, in or about any mine."

Mining Engineering sat down with Hecla chief executive officer Phil Baker to gain insight on this tremendous longevity and to get his view on how the company demonstrated persistence, gained perspective and created position for its future.How did Hecla Mining Co. get its start?In 1891, a group of investors formed Hecla Mining Co. to acquire and trade mining claims. No one envisioned at the time that the Coeur d’Alene Mining District would become known as the “Silver Valley” and produce more than 37.2 kt (1.2 billion oz) of silver. Or that Hecla would become the United States’ largest primary silver producer and the last of the pioneer mining companies from this illustrious mining district.What is the origin of the name “Hecla?”That will forever be a bit of a mystery. Some say it was named for an Icelandic volcano. Or that it was the foresight of James Toner, who staked the original claim, that it would go so deep, fulfilling the medieval folklore definition of the word ‘Hekla’ which is the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ I kind of like that one as the Lucky Friday Mine is almost 3.2 km (2 miles) below the surface. It has operated for more than 70 years and has all the markings of being one of only a handful of mines that will exceed 100 years of operations.Is there a common theme, or thread throughout the 125 years?Yes, Hecla has always had a solid core of high-quality and long-lived assets, positioning the company to survive times of low prices and reap the rewards when cycles turn and higher prices are realized. But it is not just assets. Hecla has extraordinary expertise that gives us the perspective of how to acquire, explore, develop and operate mining assets, particularly underground. Hecla is one of the few companies to acquire assets in the last five to six years and we did not have to write down the value of them, which means we paid a fair price for the asset despite the metals price reductions that followed the purchase. This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

Ore deposit models are defined largely by physical geologic features that relate conveniently to remote sensing. New Landsat, SPOT, RADARSAT and other multispectral and hyperspectral sensors with improved spatial resolution are currently in development. Near-infrared and thermal airborne hyperspectral scanners hold outstanding promise for both mineral exploration and feasibility stage mapping at potential new mining projects. These scanners are capable of identifying silicification, differentiating silicate alteration types, and mapping compositional variations within igneous and metamorphic complexes. Research in 'mineral and rock spectrometry is helping to advance applications of remote sensing. Hyperspectral scanners are capable of differentiating compositional variations within individual mineral species. Innovative data processing techniques continue to enhance computer software applications and facilitate imagery analysis by the geologist. Today, . remote sensing imagery is commonly integrated with multiple data sets in GIS format to form the core data base for regional exploration programs.

VANADIUM was discovered in 1801 by Andres Manuel del Rio, a professor of mineralogy at the School of Mines in Mexico City. Del Rio called the new element erythronium. Later, he decided that this was not a new element but a form of chromium. Not until 1831 did Nils G. Sefström, a Swedish chemist, positively determine that the metal was a new element which he named vanadium, after Vanadis, the Scandanavian goddess of beauty. From 1831 to the 1860's and 1870's, the comparative scarcity and high cost of vanadium restricted its commercial use. Shortly after 1870, more information was obtained on the physical and chemical properties of the element. Thereafter, research on vanadium has dealt largely with its use as an alloying element in steel and nonferrous metals. Vanadium is a widely distributed element in the earth's crust. It is more abundant than many metals but is disseminated in small quantities throughout a great variety of rocks. Relatively few deposits have contained ore of a grade suitable to warrant development for vanadium alone. It is produced in conjunction with uranium, iron, titanium, aluminum, and lead-zinc ores.

Mineralogy is the link between ore formation and ore extraction. It is the most fundamental component of geomet programs, and the most important aspect of a life-of-project approach to mineral resource projects. Understanding orebodies is achieved by understanding the mineralogy and texture of the materials, throughout the process, because minerals hold the information required to unlock the value they contain. Geomet mineralogy programs absolutely require the appropriate expertise and at least three steps of mineral characterisation prior to using semi-automated or other methods: field examination, thorough core logging, and optical microscopy. Economic geological inputs for orebody characterisation are necessary for orebody understanding, and are exemplified by current research in the Zambian Copperbelt, where revised sequence stratigraphy and understanding of alteration, metasomatism and metamorphism can be used to predict topical issues at mine sites. Environmental inputs for sustainability characterisation are demonstrated by recent work on tailings from the Leadville, Colorado, USA area, including linking mineralogy to water quality issues. Risk assessments need to take into account the technical uncertainties around geological variability and mineral extractability, and mineralogy is the only metric that can be used to make this risk contribution.CITATION:Olson Hoal, K, Woodhead, J and Smith, K S, 2013. Climate and hydrology data are required during all phases of mining projects, including impact assessment, mine planning and design, operational water management and mine closure and reclamation design. In the Canadian north, data sources are spatially sparse and often short-term in nature, and design parameters are often estimated based on data collected at sites far distant. Confidence in such data can be increased by verification or modification using data collected during properly implemented baseline and operational monitoring programs. A data set that accurately reflects conditions at the project is more readily accepted by regulatory agencies during the permitting process, and allows development of more effective and economic water management, mitigation measures and compensation. Data requirements and collection methods for developing an adequate data set for mine development are reviewed. These are illustrated using examples from oil sands, diamond and metal mines in the Canadian north.

This is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the European Environment Agency that aim to raise awareness of the use of economic instruments and assess their effectiveness. The emphasis is on sharing good practice and increasing knowledge and understanding across European countries in this emerging policy area. A methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic instruments has been developed and this will examine whether the inclusion of economic instruments in complex policy packages can improve the overall performance, particularly as a prevention tool in terms of resource use and waste generation The focus for this initial study is the use of aggregate taxes in four EU countries which include the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden and the UK so that a range of experiences (e.g. geographical, political etc.) can be included. The findings will be used to inform and influence future policy development in other EEA countries. The methodological approach is divided into two main sections: - Technical analysis, which covers quantitative and qualitative analysis. - Process design, i.e. who should be involved when, where and how. Process design is essential if the full learning benefits are to be gained from the technical analysis, which is the ultimate objective of these evaluations.

Australia’s ageing population means that by 2050 there will be 2.7 people of working age to support each Australian aged 65 years and over compared with five working people per retiree today and compared with 7.5 in 1970 (Swan, 2010). This means that there is going to be a greater demand on social services – for medical and aged care – from a smaller private income base. How will this gap be met? Australia is fortunate in that it has vast resources of mineral wealth; from iron ore, nickel and gas in Western Australia to the giant copper and uranium deposits at Olympic Dam in South Australia.The prospect of a meaningful profit based tax on this vast mineral wealth has been lost through Australian government’s handling of the issue in 2010 and with an industry fiercely opposed to the prospect of a mining tax. Hence, new ways of thinking are required. This paper looks at the issues facing the implementation of a novel scheme whereby Australia leases the mineral resources it extracts and thus derives income over the decades the metals are in-use in pipes, wires and structures with a premium paid for unreturned material or that used in dissipative applications. Applicable minerals could include copper, aluminium, nickel and rare earths. If Australia simply digs up and sells the metals once, the buyer becomes custodian of that resource and they benefit from controlling the future ‘above-ground’ resource stock.A complementary driver for a leasing scheme is the increasing importance of chain-of-custody following initiatives of the Responsible Jewellery Council with gold and diamonds, now with the potential to extend across commodities. The Australian minerals sector could thus position itself as a premium supplier with high social and environmental credentials.Recognising the implementation challenges, this paper includes a review of how such a system could be enforced to ensure that the metal is tracked throughout its life. It concludes with a discussion of the rates and terms should such agreements hold and suggestions for institutional arrangements for enforcing compliance.

During World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated a large number of ore deposits in the United States and Alaska in a search for domestic sources of strategic minerals. Deposits chosen for exploration included those expected to contain metals of importance in the successful prosecution of the war. This report describes exploration of a district of known antimony occurrence on Coyote or Antimony Creek near Antimony, Garfield County, Utah. A preliminary report by Paul T. Allsman, Chief of the Bureau's Salt Lake City branch made in August 1941, recommended further investigation, and proposed methods for performing the work. The project, begun in November 1941 and completed in January 1942, included trenching and sampling in four of the most promising parts of the area The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the work by detailed mapping and assisted in the interpretation of geologic data.

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.
