The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

In fiscal 1996, the US Congress directed that the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) be closed. Certain functions were reassigned to other agencies. The remaining employees were separated and the unoccupied sites were decommissioned. As a result, 12 locations were closed and about 1,200 employees were terminated in March 1996. About 600 employees at five locations were reassigned to other federal agencies. This article provides a summary of the continuing functions, the agencies involved and the points of contact for each continuing function. The functions that were discontinued are also identified. The functions that have been maintained and transferred to other agencies are: ? Portions of USBM's Mineral Information and Analysis program formerly conducted in Washington, DC and Denver, CO were assigned to the US Geological Survey (USGS). ? The Mineral Land Assessment program in Alaska (Anchorage and Juneau) was transferred to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ? The Health and Safety Research program in Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA was reassigned on an interim basis to the US Department of Energy (DOE). In fiscal year 1997, it was permanently assigned to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within the US Department of Health and Human Services. ? Environmental Research at Pittsburgh, PA was assigned to DOE. ? Materials Research at Albany, OR was assigned to DOE. ? The helium program was assigned to BLM, where it will be managed pending privatization. ? Coal and noncoal mine maps were transferred to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). The following locations were closed: ? Research centers in Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Reno, NV; Rolla, MO; Salt Lake City, UT and Tuscaloosa, AL. ? Field operations centers in Denver, CO and Spokane, WA. ? Washington, DC headquarters office. To provide a concise picture of all of the affected functions, the following is a synopsis of the USBM program functions and facilities immediately before the closure. Rossland is in the West Kootenay district; 5 miles north of the International boundary and 4 miles west of Columbia River at Trail. The first claim in the district was located in 1887; but there was little activity until 1890; when the showings that later became important were staked and development began. Production increased rapidly from 1; 800 tons in 1894 to a peak of 360; 000 tons in 1903; and averaged 286; 000 tons for the next 13 years. It declined sharply in 1917; and continued to decline until the closing of the main mines in 1928. Between 1933 and 1941 leasers mined a further 137; 000 tons. Total output has been about 6; 200; 000 tons; with average recovery of 0.47 oz. gold; 0.6 oz. silver; and 1 per cent copper. The total value was $82; 500; 000; of which aboµt three-quarters was in gold; the camp still leads the province in total gold produced. Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnage came from a small compact area worked by four inter-connected mines : the Le Roi (39 per cent); Centre Star (25 per cent); War Eagle (24 per cent); and Josie (10 per cent); all now owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smdting Company of Canada; Limited.

"This paper reviews the history of iron powder production, and outlines the varions production methods. The uses of iron powder and the reasons for its use are also covered. The paper concludes with a look at future trends in powder metallurgy.INTRODUCTION TO POWDERSTHE IRON POWDER INDUSTRY is enjoying a very rapid growth. The annual consumption of iron powder is now at the 100,000-ton level, twenty times higher than it was at the end of World War II, and the yearly in-crease bas been almost consistent at 20 per cent. This is expected to increase, bringing the tonnage to 200,-000, or even (according to some experts) to 270,000, in 1970. In any event, powder metallurgy is expanding at high speed and making an important impact on the production of iron and steel products. Some indication of the faith in the future market may be indicated by the commencement of three new powder production plants in Canada with a total capacity of 136,000 tons annually."

This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

ASIDE from the Tuesday symposium on gases in metals, the Iron and Steel Division swung into action for the first time on the third day of the meeting with a discussion of iron and steel alloys. Dr. E. S. Davenport opened the discussion on Wednesday morning by presenting the paper written by himself in association with E. C. Bain and W. S. N. wiring on the equilibrium diagram of iron-manganese-carbon alloys. A written discussion by Mr. Scott showed qualitative agree- ment, but some quantitative disagreement. Messrs. Marsh and Sisco discussed the paper at length, pointing out non- agreement of certain conclusions with the phase rule. Dr. Krivobok, although differing with the authors on some points, stated that in his opinion the information collected would be valuable in the practical use of these alloys.

"Due to the gradual exhaustion of easily extractive gold ores, it is vital to make efficient use of refractory gold ores which hold 30% gold storage of the world. However, the disadvantage of current processing technologies for refractory gold ores consists of severe pollution, low gold extraction ratio, high investment, etc, thus great research interests were attracted during recent years. This article provides an overview of the distribution and categories of the refractory gold ores in the world. The state of art in processing refractory gold ores by pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy techniques and their industrial applications are highlighted. Potential environmental conservative techniques for efficient gold extraction are also reviewed.IntroductionResources of Refractory Gold OresAs easily extractive gold ores are going to be exhausted with the large scale mining nowadays, refractory gold ores are becoming more and more important. Gold in the refractory gold ore cannot be fully extracted using conventional method (cyanidation) even with fine grinding. The amount of gold in the refractory gold ores is about 1500~2000t in China, which occupies 30~40% of the total gold storage [1]. Therefore, it is vital to make efficient use of refractory gold ores."

This paper addresses a gap in longwall multi-seam interactions and their predictions, providing a case study for future multi-seam operations for both anticipated conditions and a method for understanding the changes in stress regime. Multiple panels were modelled with the results analysed and compared to panel experiences to validate the parameters and properties. The software chosen (LaModel) is a numerical modelling package designed to model stresses and displacements on thin deposits. It utilises a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method and has been used extensively throughout both the United States and Australia in multi-seam operations. Analysis of the results demonstrates a clear correlation with the above workings and regions of significant strata instability. This provides the opportunity going forward to analyse new models and incorporate into mine planning and geotechnical designs. Continuous site-based assessment should be undertaken at multi-seam operations to better understand and quantify likely vertical stress levels within the workings. With a detailed analysis of models prior to extraction and a review of models post extraction. Further research is required as LaModel is limited to vertical stress and it is likely that interactions impact both the horizontal and shear stress regime. 3-dimensional modelling could further assist in this understanding, combined with a thorough stress monitoring regime. There is considerable interest in the iron and steel industry in the development of technologies that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as the iron and steel industry is the third largest producer of carbon emissions in the world, after automobiles and the power generation industry. The E-Iron Iron Nugget Making Process, invented by Dr. Komar Kawatra and Dr. Tim Eisele, provided a major breakthrough in the iron making process as the process uses biomass in the form of hard wood or soft wood as the reductant in the place of coal. Dr. Kawatra recognized that biomass is rich in both carbon monoxide and hydrogen, two important reducing agents. This resulted in initial experiments conducted by Dr. Kawatra and Dr. Eisele in the laboratories of the Chemical Engineering Department of Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) that prepared self-reducing pellets with wheat flour as the reductant and limestone/dolomite as the flux. Initial results were encouraging so they extended their work to include hardwood, which is in huge supply in the forests of Michigan and Minnesota, as the reductant. Dr. Kawatra has also applied the E-Iron Technology to other iron bearing minerals to produce pig iron grade iron nuggets. He used the E-Iron Process to convert red mud, a high iron waste product of the aluminum industry, into pig iron nuggets with the rare earth elements reporting to the slag. This work resulted in a patent with Dr. Kawatra and Dr. Michael Archambeau named as the inventors. Dr. Kawatra then extracted the rare earth elements as a separate high value bi-product using oxalic acid, which he produced from carbon dioxide. Dr. Kawatra also conducted a test program that produced pig iron nuggets from New Zealand beach sands. The vanadium in the beach sands was retained in the iron nuggets, recoverable as a valuable bi- product in a separate process. The titanium dioxide in the beach sands reported to the slag. This demonstrates the potential use of the E-Iron Process to convert the large ilmenite reserves in Northern Minnesota into pig iron and titanium dioxide. Another use of the E-Iron Process discovered by Dr. Kawatra was its ability to produce iron nuggets from manganiferous ores. Dr. Kawatra was able to direct the manganese into either the metal or slag by adjusting process temperature. The above discoveries are included in several patents that were assigned to Carbontec Energy. This presentation will only address the use of the E-Iron Process to produce pig iron nuggets from steel mill waste and un-pelletized, mid-grade iron ore. Carbontec Energy Corporation agreed to sponsor additional research directed at improving this new technology that would later be trade named, The E-Iron Process. Carbontec Energy conducted further work that proved that the E-Iron technology could also convert steel mill waste into metallurgically acceptable iron nuggets. Carbontec also collaborated with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Purdue University Northwest to conduct a Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored program that would use their high performance computer capability to both verify and model the E-Iron Process. Purdue University Northwest reported that the E-Iron Process can produce pig iron nuggets with 85% less carbon emissions than a blast furnace. The E-Iron Process is similar to the ITmK3 process, developed by Kobe Steel, that also produces iron nuggets but uses coal as the reductant.

Today, mining operations close to communities face increasing challenges, especially in their drilling and blasting operations. Proper management of environmental impacts is important to guarantee their license to operate and to provide sustainability to the mining business in the long term. Blasting is an event that generates impacts such as vibrations, noise (airblast), projections (flyrocks), ejection of dust and fumes (when there is a deficient detonation of the explosive). If any of these variables exceed the established regulations, sanctions can be generated and even lead to stop mining operations. The goal of this work is to present a review of different techniques, concepts, technologies, simulation software and monitoring / control tools to minimize the environmental impact generated by blasting. For which, a case study of a big scale open pit mine in Brazil with operations close to a community will be presented. An adequate management model, combined with good operational practices, the use of new technologies, enable a safe operation without incidents with the communities. In this way, building trust with neighbours, maintaining the license to operate, and helping mining industry to mobilize resources essential for progress in a sustainable way

Reactivity of ammonium nitrate based explosives is associated with the presence of iron sulfides in the ground reacting with explosive products and in some instances causing spontaneous reactions which can lead to detonation. The stability of explosive products can also be linked to in-hole density, which influences detonation efficiency, breakage performance and the potential generation of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) fumes. Reactive ground testing involves detecting a temperature rise of a mixture of a bulk explosive product sample, a ground rock sample and some specific chemical agents. This paper describes improvements in reactive ground testing involving the use of time lapse video analysis and detection of NOX gas emissions from the sample. Reactivity is stored and linked to a using cloud based software to map of the mine showing the exact location of the sample. The location marker can be selected to allow quick access to the sample test results and video. In addition to reactivity, the stability and detonation performance of bulk product can also be influenced by depth. In this paper, a system that simulates product at depth and measures density changes and monitors the structure of bulk samples is described. Results from an explosive product are analyzed and detonation performance is assessed by the measurement of velocity of detonation and detonation pressure.

This research focuses on enhancing the synergy between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarries. A blast operation at dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal was simulated to fine-tune blasting techniques aimed at optimizing fragmentation indicators. The methodology involves conducting precise blast drill hole surveys, generating detailed terrain 3D models, and integrating these models into blast simulation software to enhance accuracy and optimize production efficiency. The study applies these simulations to test blasts, evaluating improvements in cost-effectiveness, crusher power consumption, and fragmentation efficiency using both aerial and terrestrial image analysis technology. The quarry key performance indicators (KPIs) guide the blast design simulations, ensuring practicality and relevance. The case study blast revealed that implementing optimum blasting techniques can enhance crusher throughput, reduce operational costs, and improve safety. This paper is part one of a three-part technical series where we aim to create a sampling procedure and establish a reliable baseline for the current state of operation. This baseline will be used in subsequent follow-up technical papers to make recommendations and improvements. The outcome of this study provides a framework for quarry operations seeking to enhance their efficiency.

The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers extends an invitation to members of the Institute to participate in an exceedingly interesting excursion on Saturday, November 11. Permission has been secured for a visit to the plant of the Electric Boat Co. at New London, Conn. There will be run a special-test on a high-power 8-cylinder, 4-cycle Diesel engine. A large number of submarine and other engines in various stages of construction will be seen, also the boring of torpedo tubes, cylinders and other equipment for submarines. The drafting rooms and foundry mill also be open for inspection. The party will have an opportunity to see at close range the submerging of several submarines, and an attack on a vessel on the surface, an exhibit which is being arranged by courtesy of Rear Admiral A. W. Grant, who is in command of the submarine forces of the United States. The Boston members will leave South Station on train No. 7 at 8.30 A. M. Those from Providence will board this train at 9.36 A. M. The Worcester members will leave on train No. 745 at 8.36 A. M. The New York contingent will leave the Grand Central Terminal at 8.31 A. M. on train No. 8. This train will leave New Haven at 10.30 A. M. Upon arrival at New London, each group will go directly to the Mohican Hotel, where a "get-acquainted" luncheon will be served

A FALL meeting that should have repercussions both in the "Transactions" and MINING AND METALLURGY was that of the Industrial Minerals Division (Nonmetallics) at Wilmington, Oct. 21-23; headquarters, Du Pont Hotel. The sixteen technical papers and two addresses were substantial and interesting. Moreover, in every instance but one, the author made the presentation, and the one exception must have been next of kin because the ensuing discussion indicated his command of the subject. The meeting schedule clicked at every turn, thanks to Dr. Gillson, chairman of the local committee, and even the four field trips adhered to the time table. The program pre-empted morning, noon, afternoon and night two general luncheons, two dinners, and an evening technical session reminding one of the Annual Meeting. Only the registration was disappointing - about 80.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

The use of tailings for the synthesis of new materials is a worldwide concern today. This paper approaches the utilization of tailings of soapstone (steatite) in order to produce ceramics. The results show that the addition of soapstone in a ratio over 20% in the ceramic mass has enhanced the bending resistance of the ceramic samples when they were fired at temperatures of 900°C or 1000°C.
