"Tumbler Ridge, Canada's newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town's ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

General Statement In Montana, as in most states, the requirements for water quality control are becoming more restrictive. What was once accepted practice is now obsolete. The planning and construction of water quality control facilities has taken on new importance. Past practices and new ideas must be examined to meet the challenge. By this paper we hope to encourage the exchange of ideas for the improvement of water quality control techniques. Both the mining industry and governmental agencies should benefit from such an exchange. The following is a summary of the work done and in progress by The Anaconda Company in Butte to provide an improved water quality related to production processes. We invite your comments. The purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of the Resource Management Act processes at their best. Many of you will be aware of the Martha Mine situated in the middle of Waihi Township in Hauraki District. Underground mining ceased on Martha Hill in the 1950s. A new mining licence was issued in the late 1980s and since that date open cast mining has continued at the site. The Hauraki District Council notified its proposed plan in October 1994. Prior to that date numerous discussion papers and draft sections of the plan had been disseminated in the community. Considerable consultation was undertaken with all interest groups. As an indication of the success of that consultation process only 17 references to the Environment Court were lodged following the making of decisions on submissions and further submissions. Those references, which included a number from the Minerals Industry, were all resolved by consent. Out of the reference and consent order process EMMA (Extended Martha Mineral Area) was born.

"Magnetite concentrate is naturally good for pelletising. However, due to the depletion of reserves of traditional high grade hematite iron ore worldwide, the usage of magnetite concentrate in sintering is expected to increase substantially. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. This will not only improve the quality of agglomerates produced, but also have a potential beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the agglomeration process. There are an increasing number of magnetite projects currently being considered and developed. However the concentrates from some of these projects are too coarse as pellet feeds and much finer and denser than normal sinter feeds. Accordingly, special strategies are required in order to utilise the coarse magnetite concentrates at high proportions in pelletising and sintering. This paper discusses various raw material preparation technologies and blending optimization methods demonstrated to be effective for improving the sintering and pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. Pre-granulation and addition of binders, such as hydrated lime, were found to be particularly efficient in recovering the sintering productivity of sinter blends containing magnetite concentrates. In pelletising, HPGR (High Pressure Grinding Rolls) grinding enabled production of good quality pellets from 100% magnetite concentrates and optimized blends containing up to 70% magnetite concentrates also formed good pellets.INTRODUCTION Magnetite concentrates are often used as feed materials for pellet plants or sinter plants depending on their grades and grain sizes. To achieve the required quality of green and fired pellets, the concentrates often need to be ground very fine (80% passing 38- 45 m), which inevitably consumes a great amount of energy. Therefore, efficient grinding processes are required to reduce the amount of energy consumption needed to achieve the sizing and chemical specification of pellet feeds. The use of magnetite concentrates in sintering has the potential to improve sinter chemistry, which is deteriorating over time due to the slowly decreasing grade of direct shipping iron ores around the world (Yang and Mathews, 1997; Yang and Witchard, 1998, Yang and Davis, 1999; Yang 2005). However, methods are required to allow the utilisation of high levels of concentrates in sintering while maintaining productivity and sinter quality (Han and Lu, 2017)."

This paper presents design and construction challenges associated with a high-capacity rock-socketed drilled pile foundation system for a 60-story building recently constructed in an urban environment. The site is in very close proximity to surrounding 1-to-6-story buildings and a commuter rail subway tunnel structure. High compression, uplift, and lateral loads imposed by the tall, slender tower constructed over a relatively small site footprint posed a significant design challenge due to the close proximity of the subway tunnel and other structures. Construction challenges included those associated with advancing the drilled pile casings through overburden materials using internal flush method mandated by the Transit Agency, advancing the casings through very dense glacial till materials encountered above top of rock, and drilling rock sockets in variable rock conditions. This paper provides a brief overview of the site and subsurface conditions, and discusses the resulting design and construction challenges for the drilled pile foundation system and how they were addressed. SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The 8,350-square-foot site is located in a busy neighborhood in downtown New York City (NYC). Buildings neighboring the site are supported on shallow foundations, and their basements extend about 15 feet below the sidewalk level. A NYC-Landmarked building is located within a NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)-designated 90-foot influence limit from the Project site. NYC Transit Authority (NYCTA) subway tunnel and station structures are located in close proximity to the Project site. The subway tunnel structure extends about 50 to 55 feet below the sidewalk level. Although the upper portion of the tunnel structure is about 13.5 feet away from the site property line, the lower portion is only about 1 foot away from the property line. A site location plan is presented as Fig. 1. Geotechnical borings revealed subsurface conditions generally consisting of successive strata of surficial fill, sandy and silty soils, and glacial till (predominantly consisting of cobbles and boulders) overlying mica schist bedrock. A generalized subsurface profile is presented in Fig. 2. The surficial fill stratum was about 10 to 23 feet thick, and generally consisted of loose to medium dense sandy soils with varying proportions of silt, gravel, and miscellaneous debris such as brick. The underlying sandy and silty soil stratum was about 60 to 79 feet thick and generally consisted of loose to medium dense inter-bedded layers of fine to coarse sand, silty fine sand, and silt. The underlying glacial till stratum was about 26 to 70 feet thick and generally consisted of cobbles and boulders embedded in a very dense soil matrix. Top of bedrock was encountered in the borings about 110 to 150 feet below sidewalk level. Groundwater level was measured at about 30 feet below sidewalk level.

The survey of the cobalt-rich crust of the Republic of the Marshall Islands was carried out in 1996 and 1998, as the cooperative study project between Japan and SOPAC member countries, and at the thirteen seamounts, seafloor topographic maps and acoustic reflection intensity distribution images by MBES were obtained, and the collection of samples by dredging was conducted. On the basis of the previous results, three seamounts, MS01, MS11 and MS12 were selected for the 2002 year survey, and drilling by BMS (deep sea boring system) was conducted there, to understand the occurrence of cobalt-rich crust. At the same time, environmental survey was carried out to make clear the environmental characteristics of the area. The summary of the survey will be reported.

"The Canadian mining industry faces the prospects of a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers over the next decade. This arises from three factors: first, a growth in industrial activity; second, the average age of company engineering and management staff; and third, the reduced number of students in engineering faculties around the world. This paper aims to identify the critical factors underlying the trend of inadequate recruitment into higher education for mining and to examine means of alleviating the problem.This paper is based upon surveys of potential and current students and graduate mining engineers from four mining schools. An attempt is made to understand institutional and industrial images, career prospects and what is required to attract enough high-calibre young people into mining education over the next decade.IntroductionThe mining industry has started to experience a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers which is likely to persist and even worsen in the short- to medium-term.This arise s from three principal factors:1. a recent and strong growth in mining activity, which surpasses that experienced through the 70s, before the recent international industrial recession; .2. an increasingly older average age of mine engineering employees, at least in the industry's larger companies; and3. problems associated with maintaining adequate mining undergraduate recruitment levels ."

It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

The scrap based steel producers in the United States generate an estimated 650,000 tons of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust annually which is classified as hazardous waste, K061. These scrap based producers commonly referred to as mini-mills represented 39% of the steel produced in 1994. Based upon the EAF plants being installed or planned today, it is a reasonable projection to anticipate 50% of the steel produced in the United States will be by EAF's. Using a straight line projection of percent of steel produced to tonnage of EAF dust generated, this will result in 833,000 tons of dust being generated upon the completion of these new EAF producing plants, presumably by the year 2000. Because the United States is a capitalistic economy, a steel producer is in business to make a profit therefore dust management becomes a very important variable in the cost of making steel. An EAF mini-mill dust management program must consider at least three components. First the handling of the dust must be in accordance with the law; i.e., the Environmental Protection Agency rules and state and local municipalities guidelines governing K061. Second, it must be an economical solution that allows a company to manage its dust processing costs, a component of its total steel production costs while producing steel at a profit. Third, the dust management program should be one that is environmentally responsible; viz., the program should reclaim or recycle the dust constituents, as feedstock materials or saleable products. The first component, obedience of the law seems to be a relatively straight forward, common sense objective; however, as nearly every mini-mill operation will testify it has been a area of changing laws with confusing variations when it comes to K061. "Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

Extraction of underground coal or mineral by the caving methods leads to surface deformations and the accurate measurement of this deformation is becoming a demanding task. Thus, the study demonstrates a Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) technique for surface subsidence measurement. The method was applied to measure the subsidence level over three mechanized depillaring panels with caving at GDK-11 Incline mine, India. The study was conducted using C-band data of Sentinel 1A/B sensors, which captured the data in the descending path from October 25, 2017 to March 07, 2020. The deformation level was measured based on the identified PS points in the specified region. In this case, 12 zones were identified (4 for each panel), based on the observation of permanent scatterer (PS) points. The maximum subsidence level and deformation rate range in 12 zones are −43.12 to −65 mm and −73.8 to 100 mm/year, respectively. The deformation level obtained through the PS-InSAR technique showed a good agreement with those of the field measurement. Thus, the PS-InSAR technique can detect and monitor the subsidence level over the goaved-out panel(s) of an underground mine using C-band SAR data of the Sentinal-1A/B sensor.

"For many, hydrogen in a pure hydrogen economy would be like natural gas in today’s energy economy. Unfortunately, hydrogen’s physical properties are unsuited to the energy market’s requirements in terms of packaging, storage, transfer, and delivery. In this paper, a hybrid energy economy that packages hydrogen chemically on carbon atoms from various sources including recycled carbon dioxide is introduced and discussed. For this new hybrid energy economy to become a sustainable reality, the ability to recycle carbon dioxide and use hydrogen to create an appropriate energy product, such as dimethyl ether (DME), is needed. DME is recognized as a potential next generation, “beyond-petroleum”, environmentally benign commodity for energy storage and distribution. It is expected that to maximize the sustainability of the proposed hybrid energy economy, “green” hydrogen will be utilized. The “green” hydrogen would be created by the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind or geothermal heat.IntroductionWith the growing concerns surrounding trends in global warming and increasing concentrations of “greenhouse” gases, such as CO2 and CH4, efforts to mitigate the emission of these gases from industrial sources are growing. With respect to CO2, the demonstrations of various capture and sequestration methods are underway around the world.The sequestration of CO2 is mainly focused on storing the gas underground or deep in the ocean. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that 2000 Gtonnes of CO2 can be stored underground in depleted oilfields, un-minable coal beds and other geologic features [1]. Additionally CO2 may be stored at the bottom of the ocean. The lure of storing carbon dioxide in depleted oilfields or un-mineable coal seams is that an economic benefit (enhanced oil or methane recovery) can offset the costs of gas capture, transportation and storage. Unfortunately, all of these storage methods have potential for the release of CO2 or CH4 back into atmosphere or creating environmental damage (mobilizing heavy metals, disrupting deep sea ecology)."

"HudBay’s Constancia project is a copper molybdenum concentrator located in southern Peru. In 2010 Ausenco was contracted to perform a feasibility study optimization review which resulted in an improved design with significantly increased throughput capacity at a minimal increase in capital cost. Construction began in 2012 with commercial operation commencing in May 2015. This paper outlines the process plant design as well as describing the plant’s major equipment selections, start-up and early operations experiences.IntroductionHudBay Mineral’s Constancia project is located at 4200 meters above sea level (masl) in southern Peru, approximately 630 km south-east of Lima, Peru. The property can be accessed by road from Cusco, Peru, (approximately 110 km to the north), or from Arequipa, Peru (approximately 215 km to the south). Matarani, accessed via Arequipa, is the closest port.Constancia is located within the Yauri-Andahuaylas metallogenic belt. The region contains several large copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry deposits such as Antapaccay (by Glencore) and Los Chancas (by Grupo Mexico), and copper skarn deposits such as Tintaya (by Glencore) and Las Bambas (by MMG). Constancia’s ore reserves contain copper and molybdenum with trace amounts of gold and silver.Ore is mined by an open-pit operation. The process plant recovers copper and molybdenum concentrates, storing tailings in a conventional tailings management facility. Infrastructure at the site includes a grid power supply (via a 70 km overhead transmission line from Tintaya), water supply, workshops and an accommodation camp. Mine life is 22 years.Site construction works began in 2012 with first copper concentrate produced in late 2014. The project was executed for approximately 1.75B$USD.Ausenco’s design approach focussed on developing a capital efficient copper molybdenum concentrator. This paper outlines key features incorporated in the concentrator design, plant layout and equipment selection, as well as start-up experiences and early operational results."

"A three-dimensional CFD model of a straight grate furnace for indurating iron-oxide pellets was developed for exploring conditions of furnace operation for fluid flow, heat transfer and reactions. The model includes reactions for natural gas combustion in the gas phase and calcination and magnetite oxidation as well as drying in the pellet bed. The performance of the model was investigated with a series of pellet production rates that included adjustments to the fuel rates to achieve proper induration temperatures in the pellet bed. The model may be used to discover opportunities for process improvement.IntroductionIron oxide pellets are a feedstock to blast furnaces for iron making. Pellets require physical strength characteristics needed to maintain their integrity during storage, handling, transportation and smelting. Pellets are produced from iron ore in a series of mineral processing operations that form wet green balls from slurries of iron-ore concentrate with binders, such as bentonite, and possibly fluxing-agents such as limestone and dolomite. The green balls are dried, fired at high temperature, and then cooled in an induration furnace to achieve the strength and chemical composition required for efficient reduction and slag separation in blast furnaces. Induration furnaces are generally straight grates or grate-kilncooler configurations. These furnaces operate with pellet beds passing through a series of temperature zones to control drying and chemical reactions in the bed.Process air passes through the zones in an overall counter flow direction to the pellets for efficient heat transfer and energy recovery from the cooling stage. Consequently, the zone conditions and the overall furnace performance are highly coupled. Thus, it becomes challenging to predict how changes to any single zone may affect the rest of the furnace. To gain a better understanding of machine performance and coupling, a three-dimensional, steady-state model of a complete straight grate induration furnace was created using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)."

Pellet production requires iron ore concentrates have fine particle size, high specific surface area and good balling performance, so iron ore concentrates appropriate for pelletizing is limited compared to sintering. In order to extend the iron ore resources for pelletizing, the iron ore fines for sinter are studied in this paper.The effect of grinded iron ores o npelletizing, roasting and pellet quality were studied in this paper. The bond grinding index of iron ore fine is between 12.5 and 16.98 kwh/t. The grinded iron ore fine has good balling performance, the drop number and compressive strength of green pellet were improved with increase of grinded iron ore fine ratio. The compressive strength of roasted pellets were decreased with increase of grinded iron ore fine ratio, however it can be reached 2500 N.P −1 while proportioned with more than 80% of magnetite iron ore concentrate.

"Spirals are gravity concentrators used for the concentration of iron oxide minerals from ores. This paper presents the mineral size recovery curves observed for spirals operating in two Canadian iron ore processing plants. The size recovery curves are presented for rougher, cleaner and re-cleaner spirals. The partition curves observed for the spirals are significantly different than those observed for typical gravity concentration devices such as hydrocyclones or hydraulic classifiers. The size recovery curves show the complex behaviour of the minerals as they flow down a spiral and are analysed with a view toward process modelling and simulation. Initial simulation results show that gains in the iron recovery can be achieved by increasing the recovery of coarse iron oxide particles in the rougher spirals.INTRODUCTION Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and different heavy minerals ores (Wills, 1992). The classification of the particles in spirals is based on the combination of gravity, centrifuge, drag, lift and Bagnold forces (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Several papers are dedicated to the analysis of the forces acting on the particles flowing down a spiral (Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Holtham , 1992). Most of these papers aim at the development of a general model for the simulation of the classification of the particles for coal ore processing. Few papers deal with the operation of spirals for processing iron ores (Hyma and Meech, 1989; Srivastava, 2001; Dallaire et al., 1978) and fewer papers present results for spirals used as cleaners following a rougher stage. Since the classification in spiral classifiers is dependent on the particle size and specific gravity a partition or performance curve commonly applied to classifiers (Mai Manga et al., 2012) is used here to analyse spiral operation. Few papers were found to describe the operation of spirals in terms of partition curves (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Richards et al., 2000). Most of the investigations presented the application of a model to simulate the position of coal particles of various sizes and specific gravities along the trough of a spiral (Kapur et al., 1996; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991). In addition most of the available literature on spirals deals with one stage of concentration by spirals (Dallaire et al., 1978; Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985) while industrial circuits usually consist of rougher and cleaner spirals."

Thermodynamic data on the elements, oxides, sulfides, halides, and selected hydrides, carbides, nitrides, carbonates, sulfates, silicates, and miscellaneous compounds were reviewed, evaluated, and compiled at the Bureau of Mines. Synthetic fuels will be the first major development effort to feel the effects of a new set of opposition forces. These confrontations will not be of the same variety as those which occured in the 1970s. Instead the synfuels industry, particularly in the West, will find itself confronting a new coalition of local political, community, and state spokesmen. They will oppose synfuels because the projects will represent a threat to existing lifestyles, political structures, taxes, social life, water rights, economics, and other politically sensitive considerations. In short, they mean change -- usually dynamic, full of unknowns and always threatening. The battles themselves may be fought technically over environmental issues, law and regulations; often these will be the instruments of the opposition. The real underlying problems will likely lie much deeper. In many cases environmental groups will be enlisted as the standard bearers; however, this approach may simply reflect the fact that environmental objections are convenient or at times the only tools at hand.

An evaluation of electrowon tungsten powder was made by comparing its characteristics with conventional hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . Electrowon tungsten powder was investigated with respect to particle size and shape , apparent density , flow rate , compressibility , green strength , and sintering characteristics . In addition , its chemical purity , absolute density , and purification by melting were determined . Significant findings were higher flow rates and better compressibility than hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . However , the large particle size peculiar to the electrowinning process effectively prevented conventional sintering to a high- density material . The possibility of producing high - density material , using a new technique of hot swaging sheathed sintered - tungsten compacts , was demonstrated by the achievement of densities of 92 percent of theoretical .
